68 Blessed is the Lord, the God of Israel,(A)
because he has visited
and provided redemption for his people.(B)
69 He has raised up a horn of salvation for us(C)
in the house of his servant David,(D)
70 just as he spoke by the mouth
of his holy prophets in ancient times;(E)
71 salvation from our enemies
and from the hand of those who hate us.
72 He has dealt mercifully with our ancestors(F)
and remembered his holy covenant(G)—
73 the oath that he swore to our father Abraham,(H)
to grant that we,
74 having been rescued
from the hand of our enemies,
would serve him without fear
75 in holiness and righteousness
in his presence all our days.
76 And you, child, will be called
a prophet of the Most High,(I)
for you will go before the Lord
to prepare his ways,(J)
77 to give his people knowledge of salvation
through the forgiveness of their sins.(K)
78 Because of our God’s merciful compassion,
the dawn from on high(L) will visit us
79 to shine on those who live in darkness
and the shadow of death,(M)
to guide our feet into the way of peace.

70 (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago),(E)
71 salvation from our enemies
and from the hand of all who hate us—
72 to show mercy to our ancestors(F)
and to remember his holy covenant,(G)
73 the oath he swore to our father Abraham:(H)
74 to rescue us from the hand of our enemies,
and to enable us to serve him(I) without fear(J)
75 in holiness and righteousness(K) before him all our days.
76 And you, my child, will be called a prophet(L) of the Most High;(M)
for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,(N)
77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation
through the forgiveness of their sins,(O)
78 because of the tender mercy of our God,
by which the rising sun(P) will come to us from heaven
79 to shine on those living in darkness
and in the shadow of death,(Q)
to guide our feet into the path of peace.”(R)

The Righteous and the Wicked
13 “Your words against me are harsh,”(A) says the Lord.
Yet you ask, “What have we spoken against you?”
14 You have said, “It is useless to serve God. What have we gained by keeping his requirements(B) and walking mournfully(C) before the Lord of Armies? 15 So now we consider the arrogant(D) to be fortunate.(E) Not only do those who commit wickedness prosper, they even test God(F) and escape.”(G)
16 At that time those who feared the Lord spoke to one another. The Lord took notice and listened. So a book of remembrance(H) was written before him for those who feared the Lord and had high regard for his name. 17 “They will be mine,” says the Lord of Armies,(I) “my own possession on the day I am preparing. I will have compassion on them as a man has compassion on his son who serves him.(J) 18 So you will again see the difference between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve him.

Israel Speaks Arrogantly Against God
13 “You have spoken arrogantly(A) against me,” says the Lord.
“Yet you ask,(B) ‘What have we said against you?’
14 “You have said, ‘It is futile(C) to serve(D) God. What do we gain by carrying out his requirements(E) and going about like mourners(F) before the Lord Almighty? 15 But now we call the arrogant(G) blessed. Certainly evildoers(H) prosper,(I) and even when they put God to the test, they get away with it.’”

16 Then those who feared the Lord talked with each other, and the Lord listened and heard.(J) A scroll(K) of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared(L) the Lord and honored his name.
17 “On the day when I act,” says the Lord Almighty, “they will be my(M) treasured possession.(N) I will spare(O) them, just as a father has compassion and spares his son(P) who serves him. 18 And you will again see the distinction between the righteous(Q) and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.(R)

18 What does it matter? Only that in every way, whether from false motives(A) or true, Christ is proclaimed, and in this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice 19 because I know this will lead to my salvation[a](B) through your prayers and help from the Spirit(C) of Jesus Christ.(D) 20 My eager expectation and hope(E) is that I will not be ashamed about anything, but that now as always, with all courage, Christ will be highly honored in my body, whether by life(F) or by death.(G)
Living Is Christ
21 For me, to live is Christ(H) and to die is gain.(I) 22 Now if I live on in the flesh, this means fruitful(J) work(K) for me; and I don’t know which one I should choose. 23 I am torn between the two. I long to depart and be with Christ(L)—which is far better(M)— 24 but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for your sake. 25 Since I am persuaded of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,(N) 26 so that, because of my coming to you again, your boasting(O) in Christ Jesus(P) may abound.

18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.
Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, 19 for I know that through your prayers(A) and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ(B) what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.[a](C) 20 I eagerly expect(D) and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage(E) so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body,(F) whether by life or by death.(G) 21 For to me, to live is Christ(H) and to die is gain. 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart(I) and be with Christ,(J) which is better by far; 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, 26 so that through my being with you again your boasting in Christ Jesus will abound on account of me.
