51 When the days were approaching for (A)His [a]ascension, He [b]was determined (B)to go to Jerusalem; 52 and He sent messengers on ahead of Him, and they went and entered a village of the (C)Samaritans to [c]make arrangements for Him. 53 And they did not receive Him, (D)because [d]He was traveling toward Jerusalem. 54 When His disciples (E)James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to (F)command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” 55 But He turned and rebuked them.[e] 56 And they went on to another village.

Exacting Discipleship

57 (G)As they were going on the road, (H)someone said to Him, “I will follow You wherever You go.” 58 And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the sky have nests, but (I)the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” 59 And He said to another, (J)Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.” 60 But He said to him, “Allow the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and (K)proclaim everywhere the kingdom of God.” 61 Another also said, “I will follow You, Lord; but (L)first permit me to say goodbye to those at my home.” 62 But Jesus said to him, (M)No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

The Seventy-two Sent Out

10 Now after this (N)the Lord appointed [f]seventy-two (O)others, and sent them (P)in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come. And He was saying to them, (Q)The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore plead with the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. Go; (R)behold, I am sending you out like lambs in the midst of wolves. (S)Carry no money belt, no [g]bag, no sandals, and greet no one along the way. And whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house.’ And if a [h]man of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him; but if not, it will return to you. Stay in [i]that house, eating and drinking [j]what they provide; for (T)the laborer is deserving of his wages. Do not move from house to house. Whatever city you enter and they receive you, (U)eat what is served to you; and heal those in it who are sick, and say to them, ‘(V)The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, 11 (W)Even the dust of your city which clings to our feet we wipe off in protest against you; yet [k]be sure of this, that (X)the kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 I say to you, (Y)it will be more tolerable on that day for (Z)Sodom than for that city.

Opposition from Samaritans

51 As the time drew near for him to ascend to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. 52 He sent messengers ahead to a Samaritan village to prepare for his arrival. 53 But the people of the village did not welcome Jesus because he was on his way to Jerusalem. 54 When James and John saw this, they said to Jesus, “Lord, should we call down fire from heaven to burn them up[a]?” 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them.[b] 56 So they went on to another village.

The Cost of Following Jesus

57 As they were walking along, someone said to Jesus, “I will follow you wherever you go.”

58 But Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place even to lay his head.”

59 He said to another person, “Come, follow me.”

The man agreed, but he said, “Lord, first let me return home and bury my father.”

60 But Jesus told him, “Let the spiritually dead bury their own dead![c] Your duty is to go and preach about the Kingdom of God.”

61 Another said, “Yes, Lord, I will follow you, but first let me say good-bye to my family.”

62 But Jesus told him, “Anyone who puts a hand to the plow and then looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God.”

Jesus Sends Out His Disciples

10 The Lord now chose seventy-two[d] other disciples and sent them ahead in pairs to all the towns and places he planned to visit. These were his instructions to them: “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields. Now go, and remember that I am sending you out as lambs among wolves. Don’t take any money with you, nor a traveler’s bag, nor an extra pair of sandals. And don’t stop to greet anyone on the road.

“Whenever you enter someone’s home, first say, ‘May God’s peace be on this house.’ If those who live there are peaceful, the blessing will stand; if they are not, the blessing will return to you. Don’t move around from home to home. Stay in one place, eating and drinking what they provide. Don’t hesitate to accept hospitality, because those who work deserve their pay.

“If you enter a town and it welcomes you, eat whatever is set before you. Heal the sick, and tell them, ‘The Kingdom of God is near you now.’ 10 But if a town refuses to welcome you, go out into its streets and say, 11 ‘We wipe even the dust of your town from our feet to show that we have abandoned you to your fate. And know this—the Kingdom of God is near!’ 12 I assure you, even wicked Sodom will be better off than such a town on judgment day.
