19 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;(A) others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.”(B)

20 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”(C)

Jesus Predicts His Death

21 Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone.(D) 22 And he said, “The Son of Man(E) must suffer many things(F) and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(G) and he must be killed(H) and on the third day(I) be raised to life.”(J)

23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.(K) 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.(L) 25 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? 26 Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them(M) when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.(N)

27 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”

The Transfiguration(O)

28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James(P) with him and went up onto a mountain to pray.(Q) 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. 31 They spoke about his departure,[a](R) which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem.

  1. Luke 9:31 Greek exodos

19 They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.

20 He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.

21 And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;

22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.

23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.

27 But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.

28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.

29 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.

30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:

31 Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.
