28 I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”[a] 29 (When they heard this all the people and the tax collectors justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John; 30 but the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.)

- 7.28 John, by virtue of his office, belonged to the old dispensation, the time of preparation for the kingdom. In terms of spiritual status, even the humbler members of the kingdom were superior to him.

29 (All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John.(B) 30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the law(C) rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)
