²⁹ They got up, drove him out of the town,^(A) and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff.

⁵⁹ At this, they picked up stones to stone him,^(A) but Jesus hid himself,^(B) slipping away from the temple grounds.

¹² And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate^(A) to make the people holy^(B) through his own blood.^(C)

²⁸ shouting, “Fellow Israelites, help us! This is the man who teaches everyone everywhere against our people and our law and this place. And besides, he has brought Greeks into the temple and defiled this holy place.”^{(A) 29} (They had previously seen Trophimus^(B) the Ephesian^(C) in the city with Paul and assumed that Paul had brought him into the temple.)

³⁰ The whole city was aroused, and the people came running from all directions. Seizing Paul,^(D) they dragged him^(E) from the temple, and immediately the gates were shut. ³¹ While they were trying to kill him, news reached the commander of the Roman troops that the whole city of Jerusalem was in an uproar. ³² He at once took some officers and soldiers and ran down to the crowd. When the rioters saw the commander and his soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.^(F)

²³ After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer^(A) was commanded to guard them carefully. ²⁴ When he received these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.^(B)

⁵⁷ At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, ⁵⁸ dragged him out of the city^(A) and began to stone him.^(B) Meanwhile, the witnesses^(C) laid their coats^(D) at the feet of a young man named Saul.^(E)

²⁴ If I had not done among them the works no one else did,^(A) they would not be guilty of sin.^(B) As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. ²⁵ But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law:^(C) ‘They hated me without reason.’^[a](D)

⁴⁰ As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me,^(A) a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God.^(B) Abraham did not do such things.

³⁷ I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me,^(A) because you have no room for my word.
