Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

So he said to the crowds who came out to be baptized by him, You offspring of vipers! Who [a]secretly warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

Bear fruits that are deserving and consistent with [your] repentance [that is, [b]conduct worthy of a heart changed, a heart abhorring sin]. And do not begin to say to yourselves, We have Abraham as our father; for I tell you that God is able from these stones to raise up descendants for Abraham.

Even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees, so that every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire.
