⁸ Therefore bear fruits in keeping with repentance, and ^(A)do not begin to say ^[a]to yourselves, ‘^(B)We have Abraham for our father,’ for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham.

²⁴ And he cried out and said, ‘^(A)Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in ^(B)this flame.’

³³ They answered Him, “^(A)We are Abraham’s descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?”

³⁹ They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is ^(A)our father.” Jesus *said to them, “^(B)If you are Abraham’s children, do the deeds of Abraham.

⁵³ Surely You ^(A)are not greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died too; whom do You make Yourself out to be?”

²⁶ “Brethren, sons of Abraham’s family, and those among you who fear God, to us the message of ^(A)this salvation has been sent.

Justification by Faith Evidenced in Old Testament

4 What then shall we say that Abraham, ^[a]our forefather ^(A)according to the flesh, has found?

⁷ nor are they all children ^(A)because they are Abraham’s ^[a]descendants, but: “^[b](B)through Isaac your ^[c]descendants will be named.” ⁸ That is, it is not the children of the flesh who are ^(C)children of God, but the ^(D)children of the promise are regarded as ^[d]descendants.

²⁹ And if ^(A)you ^[a]belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s ^[b]descendants, heirs according to ^(B)promise.
