Jesus among His Disciples

19 Now when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were [b]shut where the disciples were together due to (AC)fear of the [c]Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst, and *said to them, “(AD)Peace be to you.” 20 And when He had said this, (AE)He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then (AF)rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 So Jesus said to them again, “(AG)Peace be to you; (AH)just as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them and *said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 (AI)If you forgive the sins of any, their sins [d]have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.”

24 But (AJ)Thomas, one of (AK)the twelve, who was called [e](AL)Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in (AM)His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, (AN)I will not believe.”

26 [f]Eight days later His disciples were again inside, and Thomas was with them. Jesus *came, the doors having been [g]shut, and stood in their midst and said, “(AO)Peace be to you.” 27 Then He *said to Thomas, “(AP)Place your finger here, and see My hands; and take your hand and put it into My side; and do not continue in disbelief, but be a believer.” 28 Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus *said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you now believed? (AQ)Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.”

Why This Gospel Was Written

30 (AR)So then, many other [h](AS)signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these have been written (AT)so that you may believe that Jesus is the [i]Christ, (AU)the Son of God; and that by (AV)believing you may have life in His name.

Jesus Appears at the Sea of Galilee

21 After these things Jesus [j](AW)revealed Himself (AX)again to the disciples at the (AY)Sea of Tiberias, and He revealed Himself in this way: 2 Simon Peter, (AZ)Thomas who was called [k]Didymus, (BA)Nathanael of (BB)Cana in Galilee, (BC)the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter *said to them, “I am going fishing.” They *said to him, “We are also coming with you.” They went out and got into the boat; and (BD)that night they caught nothing.

4 But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not (BE)know that it was Jesus. 5 So Jesus *said to them, “Children, (BF)you do not have any fish to eat, do you?” They answered Him, “No.” 6 And He said to them, “(BG)Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you will find the fish.” So they cast it, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great quantity of fish. 7 (BH)Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved *said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea. 8 But the other disciples came in the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but about [l]two hundred cubits away, dragging the net full of fish.

9 So when they got out on the land, they *saw a charcoal (BI)fire already [m]made and (BJ)fish placed on it, and bread. 10 Jesus *said to them, “Bring some of the (BK)fish which you have now caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went up and hauled the net to land, full of large fish, 153; and although there were so many, the net was not torn.

Jesus Provides

12 Jesus *said to them, “Come and have (BL)breakfast.” None of the disciples ventured to inquire of Him, “Who are You?” knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus *came and *took (BM)the bread and *gave it to them, and the (BN)fish likewise. 14 This was now the (BO)third time that Jesus revealed Himself to the disciples, after He was raised from the dead.

The Love Question

15 Now when they had (BP)finished breakfast, Jesus *said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you [n](BQ)love Me more than these?” He *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [o]love You.” He *said to him, “Tend (BR)My lambs.” 16 He *said to him again, a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you [p]love Me?” He *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [q]love You.” He *said to him, “(BS)Shepherd My sheep.” 17 He *said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you [r]love Me?” Peter was [s]hurt because He said to him (BT)the third time, “Do you [t]love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, (BU)You know all things; You know that I [u]love You.” Jesus *said to him, “(BV)Tend My sheep.

Our Times Are in His Hand

18 Truly, truly I tell you, when you were younger, you used to put on your belt and walk wherever you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will put your belt on you, and bring you where you do not want to go.” 19 Now He said this, (BW)indicating by (BX)what kind of death he would glorify God. And when He had said this, He *said to him, “(BY)Follow Me!”

20 Peter turned around and *saw the (BZ)disciple whom Jesus loved following them—the one who also had (CA)leaned back on His chest at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who is betraying You?” 21 So Peter, upon seeing him, *said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?” 22 Jesus *said to him, “If I want him to remain (CB)until I come, what is that to you? You (CC)follow Me!” 23 Therefore this [v]account went out among (CD)the brothers, that that disciple would not die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but only, “If I want him to remain (CE)until I come, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple who (CF)is testifying about these things and wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true.

25 But there are also (CG)many other things which Jesus did, which, if they were written in detail, I expect that even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written.

The Empty Tomb(A)

20 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene(B) went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.(C) 2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved,(D) and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”(E)

3 So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb.(F) 4 Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 He bent over and looked in(G) at the strips of linen(H) lying there but did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7 as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head.(I) The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. 8 Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first,(J) also went inside. He saw and believed. 9 (They still did not understand from Scripture(K) that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)(L) 10 Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

11 Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb(M) 12 and saw two angels in white,(N) seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.

13 They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”(O)

“They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.”(P) 14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there,(Q) but she did not realize that it was Jesus.(R)

15 He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?(S) Who is it you are looking for?”

Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”

16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic,(T) “Rabboni!”(U) (which means “Teacher”).

17 Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers(V) and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father(W) and your Father, to my God and your God.’”

18 Mary Magdalene(X) went to the disciples(Y) with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders,(Z) Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace(AA) be with you!”(AB) 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side.(AC) The disciples were overjoyed(AD) when they saw the Lord.

21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you!(AE) As the Father has sent me,(AF) I am sending you.”(AG) 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.(AH) 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”(AI)

Jesus Appears to Thomas

24 Now Thomas(AJ) (also known as Didymus[a]), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side,(AK) I will not believe.”(AL)

26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace(AM) be with you!”(AN) 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”(AO)

28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed;(AP) blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”(AQ)

The Purpose of John’s Gospel

30 Jesus performed many other signs(AR) in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.(AS) 31 But these are written that you may believe[b](AT) that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God,(AU) and that by believing you may have life in his name.(AV)

Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish

21 Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples,(AW) by the Sea of Galilee.[c](AX) It happened this way: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas(AY) (also known as Didymus[d]), Nathanael(AZ) from Cana in Galilee,(BA) the sons of Zebedee,(BB) and two other disciples were together. 3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.(BC)

4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.(BD)

5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”

“No,” they answered.

6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.(BE)

7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved(BF) said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.[e] 9 When they landed, they saw a fire(BG) of burning coals there with fish on it,(BH) and some bread.

10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.(BI) 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples(BJ) after he was raised from the dead.

Jesus Reinstates Peter

15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”(BK)

Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”(BL)

16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”(BM)

17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?”(BN) He said, “Lord, you know all things;(BO) you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.(BP) 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death(BQ) by which Peter would glorify God.(BR) Then he said to him, “Follow me!”(BS)

20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved(BT) was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”)(BU) 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”

22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return,(BV) what is that to you? You must follow me.”(BW) 23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers(BX) that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things(BY) and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.(BZ)

25 Jesus did many other things as well.(CA) If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.

22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth(A) was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs,(B) which God did among you through him,(C) as you yourselves know. 23 This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge;(D) and you, with the help of wicked men,[a] put him to death by nailing him to the cross.(E) 24 But God raised him from the dead,(F) freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.(G) 25 David said about him:
