Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(C)

43 (D)And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now His betrayer had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I (E)kiss, He is the One; seize Him and lead Him away safely.”

45 As soon as he had come, immediately he went up to Him and said to Him, “Rabbi, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.

46 Then they laid their hands on Him and took Him. 47 And one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

48 (F)Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? 49 I was daily with you in the temple (G)teaching, and you did not seize Me. But (H)the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”

50 (I)Then they all forsook Him and fled.

41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour(A) has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus Arrested(B)

43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(C) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(D) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(E) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”(F) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(G)

And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; (A)for Jesus often met there with His disciples. (B)Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. Jesus therefore, (C)knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?”

They answered Him, (D)“Jesus [a]of Nazareth.”

Jesus said to them, “I am He. And Judas, who (E)betrayed Him, also stood with them. Now when He said to them, “I am He, they drew back and fell to the ground.

Then He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?”

And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”

Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,” that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, (F)“Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none.”

10 (G)Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.

11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink (H)the cup which My Father has given Me?”

Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.(A) So Judas came to the garden, guiding(B) a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees.(C) They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.

Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him,(D) went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”(E)

“Jesus of Nazareth,”(F) they replied.

“I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?”(G)

“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.

Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”[a](H)

10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)

11 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup(I) the Father has given me?”

47 And (C)while He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and elders of the people.

48 Now His betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him.” 49 Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” (D)and kissed Him.

52 But Jesus said to him, “Put your sword in its place, (G)for all who take the sword will [b]perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with (H)more than twelve legions of angels? 54 How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, (I)that it must happen thus?”
