Jesus Betrayed by Judas

47 (A)While He was still speaking, behold, a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading the way for them; and he approached Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 When those who were around Him saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the (B)sword?” 50 And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But Jesus responded and said, [a]Stop! No more of this.” And He touched his ear and healed him. 52 And Jesus said to the chief priests and (C)officers of the temple and elders who had come against Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs (D)as you would against a man inciting a revolt? 53 While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me; but [b]this hour and the power of darkness are yours.”

Jesus’ Arrest

54 (E)Now they arrested Him and led Him away, and brought Him to the house of the high priest; but (F)Peter was following at a distance. 55 (G)After they kindled a fire in the middle of (H)the courtyard and sat down together, Peter was sitting among them. 56 And a slave woman, seeing him as he sat in the firelight, and staring at him, said, “This man was with Him as well.” 57 But he denied it, saying, “I do not know Him, woman!” 58 And a little later, (I)another person saw him and said, “You are one of them too!” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!” 59 And after about an hour had passed, some other man began to insist, saying, “Certainly this man also was with Him, (J)for he, too, is a Galilean.” 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about!” And immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61 And then (K)the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, (L)Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.” 62 And he went out and wept bitterly.

63 (M)The men who were holding [c]Jesus in custody began mocking Him and beating Him, 64 and they blindfolded Him and repeatedly asked Him, saying, “(N)Prophesy, who is the one who hit You?” 65 And they were saying many other things against Him, (O)blaspheming.

Jesus before the Sanhedrin

66 (P)When it was day, (Q)the [d]Council of elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Him away to their (R)council chamber, saying, 67 (S)If You are the [e]Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe; 68 and if I ask a question, you will not answer. 69 (T)But from now on (U)the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” 70 And they all said, “So You are (V)the Son of God?” And He said to them, (W)You say correctly that I am.” 71 And then they said, “What further need do we have of testimony? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth!”

Jesus before Pilate

23 Then the entire assembly of them set out and (X)brought Him before Pilate. (Y)And they began to bring charges against Him, saying, “We found this man (Z)misleading our nation and (AA)forbidding us to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is [f]Christ, a King.” Now Pilate asked Him, saying, “So You are the King of the Jews?” And He answered him and said, (AB)It is as you say.” But Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “(AC)I find no grounds for charges in the case of this man.” But they kept on insisting, saying, “He is stirring up the people, teaching all over Judea, (AD)starting from Galilee, as far as this place!”

Now when Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. And when he learned that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to (AE)Herod, [g]since he also was in Jerusalem [h]at this time.

Jesus before Herod

Now Herod was overjoyed when he saw Jesus; for (AF)he had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had been hearing about Him and was hoping to see some [i]sign performed by Him. And he questioned Him [j]at some length; but (AG)He offered him no answer at all. 10 Now the chief priests and the scribes stood there, vehemently charging Him. 11 And Herod, together with his soldiers, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, (AH)dressing Him in a brightly shining robe, and sent Him back to Pilate. 12 And so (AI)Herod and Pilate became friends with one another that very day; for previously, they had been enemies toward each other.

Pilate Seeks Jesus’ Release

13 Now Pilate summoned to himself the chief priests, the [k](AJ)rulers, and the people, 14 and he said to them, “You brought this man to me on the ground that (AK)he is inciting the people to revolt; and behold, after examining Him before you, I (AL)have found no basis at all in the case of this man for the charges which you are bringing against Him. 15 No, nor has (AM)Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothing deserving death has been done by Him. 16 Therefore I will [l](AN)punish Him and release Him.” 17 [[m]Now he was obligated to release to them at the feast one prisoner.]

18 But they cried out all together, saying, “(AO)Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas!” 19 (He was one who had been thrown into prison for a revolt that took place in the city, and for murder.) 20 But Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them again, 21 but they kept on crying out, saying, “Crucify, crucify Him!” 22 And he said to them a third time, “Why, what has this man done wrong? I have found [n]in His case no grounds for a sentence of death; therefore I will [o](AP)punish Him and release Him.” 23 But they were insistent, with loud voices, demanding that He be crucified. And their voices began to prevail. 24 And so Pilate decided to have their demand carried out. 25 And he released the man for whom they were asking, who had been thrown into prison for a revolt and murder; but he handed Jesus over to their will.

Simon Carries the Cross

26 (AQ)And when they led Him away, they seized a man, Simon of (AR)Cyrene, as he was coming in from the country, and placed on him the cross to carry behind Jesus.

27 Now following Him was a large crowd of the people, and of women who were [p](AS)mourning and grieving for Him. 28 But Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, stop weeping for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For behold, days are coming when they will say, ‘(AT)Blessed are those who cannot bear, and the wombs that have not given birth, and the breasts that have not nursed.’ 30 Then they will begin to (AU)say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ 31 For if they do these things [q]when the tree is green, what will happen [r]when it is dry?”

32 (AV)Now two others, who were criminals, were also being led away to be put to death with Him.

The Crucifixion

33 (AW)And when they came to the place called [s]The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. 34 [[t]But Jesus was saying, (AX)Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”] (AY)And they cast lots, dividing His garments among themselves.

Jesus Arrested(A)

47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”

49 When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?”(B) 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.

51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.

52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard,(C) and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts,(D) and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour(E)—when darkness reigns.”(F)

Peter Disowns Jesus(G)

54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest.(H) Peter followed at a distance.(I) 55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.”

57 But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.

58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”

“Man, I am not!” Peter replied.

59 About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”(J)

60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord(K) turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.”(L) 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.

The Guards Mock Jesus(M)

63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?” 65 And they said many other insulting things to him.(N)

Jesus Before Pilate and Herod(O)(P)(Q)

66 At daybreak the council(R) of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together,(S) and Jesus was led before them. 67 “If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.”

Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer.(T) 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”(U)

70 They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?”(V)

He replied, “You say that I am.”(W)

71 Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.”

23 Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate.(X) And they began to accuse him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation.(Y) He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar(Z) and claims to be Messiah, a king.”(AA)

So Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.

Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”(AB)

But they insisted, “He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee(AC) and has come all the way here.”

On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean.(AD) When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod,(AE) who was also in Jerusalem at that time.

When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him.(AF) From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort. He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.(AG) 10 The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him. 11 Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe,(AH) they sent him back to Pilate. 12 That day Herod and Pilate became friends(AI)—before this they had been enemies.

13 Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him.(AJ) 15 Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. 16 Therefore, I will punish him(AK) and then release him.” [17] [a]

18 But the whole crowd shouted, “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!”(AL) 19 (Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)

20 Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. 21 But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”

22 For the third time he spoke to them: “Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him.”(AM)

23 But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed. 24 So Pilate decided to grant their demand. 25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.

The Crucifixion of Jesus(AN)

26 As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene,(AO) who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.(AP) 27 A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed(AQ) for him. 28 Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.(AR) 29 For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’(AS) 30 Then

“‘they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!”
and to the hills, “Cover us!”’[b](AT)

31 For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”(AU)

32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.(AV) 33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said, “Father,(AW) forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”[c](AX) And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(AY)
