The Prayer in the Garden(A)
39 (B)Coming out, (C)He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him. 40 (D)When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
41 (E)And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless (F)not My will, but Yours, be done.” 43 [a]Then (G)an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44 (H)And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
45 When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow. 46 Then He said to them, “Why (I)do you sleep? Rise and (J)pray, lest you enter into temptation.”
Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(K)
47 And while He was still speaking, (L)behold, a multitude; and he who was called (M)Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a (N)kiss?”
49 When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” 50 And (O)one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.
51 But Jesus answered and said, “Permit even this.” And He touched his ear and healed him.
52 (P)Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, “Have you come out, as against a (Q)robber, with swords and clubs? 53 When I was with you daily in the (R)temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is your (S)hour, and the power of darkness.”
Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps Bitterly(T)
54 (U)Having arrested Him, they led Him and brought Him into the high priest’s house. (V)But Peter followed at a distance. 55 (W)Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. 56 And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, “This man was also with Him.”
57 But he denied [b]Him, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.”
58 (X)And after a little while another saw him and said, “You also are of them.”
But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”
59 (Y)Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, “Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a (Z)Galilean.”
60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying!”
Immediately, while he was still speaking, [c]the rooster crowed. 61 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then (AA)Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, (AB)“Before the rooster [d]crows, you will deny Me three times.” 62 So Peter went out and wept bitterly.
Jesus Mocked and Beaten(AC)
63 (AD)Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and (AE)beat Him. 64 [e]And having blindfolded Him, they (AF)struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?” 65 And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.
Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin(AG)
66 (AH)As soon as it was day, (AI)the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying, 67 (AJ)“If You are the Christ, tell us.”
But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will (AK)by no means believe. 68 And if I [f]also ask you, you will by no means answer [g]Me or let Me go. 69 (AL)Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God.”
70 Then they all said, “Are You then the Son of God?”
So He said to them, (AM)“You rightly say that I am.”
71 (AN)And they said, “What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”
Jesus Handed Over to Pontius Pilate(AO)
23 Then (AP)the whole multitude of them arose and led Him to (AQ)Pilate. 2 And they began to (AR)accuse Him, saying, “We found this fellow (AS)perverting [h]the nation, and (AT)forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, saying (AU)that He Himself is Christ, a King.”
3 (AV)Then Pilate asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?”
He answered him and said, “It is as you say.”
4 So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, (AW)“I find no fault in this Man.”
5 But they were the more fierce, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from (AX)Galilee to this place.”
Jesus Faces Herod
6 When Pilate heard [i]of Galilee, he asked if the Man were a Galilean. 7 And as soon as he knew that He belonged to (AY)Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. 8 Now when Herod saw Jesus, (AZ)he was exceedingly glad; for he had desired for a long time to see Him, because (BA)he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him. 9 Then he questioned Him with many words, but He answered him (BB)nothing. 10 And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him. 11 (BC)Then Herod, with his [j]men of war, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him back to Pilate. 12 That very day (BD)Pilate and Herod became friends with each other, for previously they had been at enmity with each other.
Taking the Place of Barabbas(BE)
13 (BF)Then Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people, 14 said to them, (BG)“You have brought this Man to me, as one who misleads the people. And indeed, (BH)having examined Him in your presence, I have found no fault in this Man concerning those things of which you accuse Him; 15 no, neither did Herod, for [k]I sent you back to him; and indeed nothing deserving of death has been done by Him. 16 (BI)I will therefore chastise Him and release Him” 17 (BJ)(for[l] it was necessary for him to release one to them at the feast).
18 And (BK)they all cried out at once, saying, “Away with this Man, and release to us Barabbas”— 19 who had been thrown into prison for a certain rebellion made in the city, and for murder.
20 Pilate, therefore, wishing to release Jesus, again called out to them. 21 But they shouted, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!”
22 Then he said to them the third time, “Why, what evil has He done? I have found no reason for death in Him. I will therefore chastise Him and let Him go.”
23 But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. And the voices of these men [m]and of the chief priests prevailed. 24 So (BL)Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they requested. 25 (BM)And he released [n]to them the one they requested, who for rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison; but he delivered Jesus to their will.
The King on a Cross(BN)
26 (BO)Now as they led Him away, they laid hold of a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus.
27 And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him. 28 But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 (BP)For indeed the days are coming in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, wombs that never bore, and breasts which never nursed!’ 30 Then they will begin (BQ)‘to say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!” ’ 31 (BR)For if they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry?”
32 (BS)There were also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to death. 33 And (BT)when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left. 34 [o]Then Jesus said, “Father, (BU)forgive them, for (BV)they do not know what they do.”
And (BW)they divided His garments and cast lots. 35 And (BX)the people stood looking on. But even the (BY)rulers with them sneered, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God.”
36 The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him (BZ)sour wine, 37 and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself.”
38 (CA)And an inscription also was [p]written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew:
THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
39 (CB)Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, [q]“If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.”
40 But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done (CC)nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said [r]to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”
43 And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in (CD)Paradise.”
Jesus Dies on the Cross(CE)
44 (CF)Now it [s]was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45 Then the sun was [t]darkened, and (CG)the veil of the temple was torn in [u]two. 46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, (CH)‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ ” (CI)Having said this, He breathed His last.
47 (CJ)So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, “Certainly this was a righteous Man!”
48 And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned. 49 (CK)But all His acquaintances, and the women who followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.
Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb(CL)
50 (CM)Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and just man. 51 He had not consented to their decision and deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, (CN)who[v] himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God. 52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53 (CO)Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before. 54 That day was (CP)the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near.
55 And the women (CQ)who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and (CR)they observed the tomb and how His body was laid. 56 Then they returned and (CS)prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath (CT)according to the commandment.
He Is Risen(CU)
24 Now (CV)on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, [w]and certain other women with them, came to the tomb (CW)bringing the spices which they had prepared. 2 (CX)But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. 3 (CY)Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 And it happened, as they were [x]greatly perplexed about this, that (CZ)behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. 5 Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but is risen! (DA)Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, 7 saying, ‘The Son of Man must be (DB)delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’ ”
8 And (DC)they remembered His words. 9 (DD)Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, (DE)Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles. 11 (DF)And their words seemed to them like [y]idle tales, and they did not believe them. 12 (DG)But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths [z]lying by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened.
The Road to Emmaus(DH)
13 (DI)Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was [aa]seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened. 15 So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that (DJ)Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. 16 But (DK)their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.
17 And He said to them, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you [ab]walk and are sad?”
18 Then the one (DL)whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?”
19 And He said to them, “What things?”
So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, (DM)who was a Prophet (DN)mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 (DO)and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. 21 But we were hoping (DP)that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. 22 Yes, and (DQ)certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us. 23 When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. 24 And (DR)certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.”
25 Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26 (DS)Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His (DT)glory?” 27 And beginning at (DU)Moses and (DV)all the Prophets, He [ac]expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
The Disciples’ Eyes Opened
28 Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and (DW)He [ad]indicated that He would have gone farther. 29 But (DX)they constrained Him, saying, (DY)“Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And He went in to stay with them.
30 Now it came to pass, as (DZ)He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.
32 And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” 33 So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and (EA)has appeared to Simon!” 35 And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was [ae]known to them in the breaking of bread.
Jesus Appears to His Disciples(EB)
36 (EC)Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, “Peace to you.” 37 But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen (ED)a spirit. 38 And He said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. (EE)Handle Me and see, for a (EF)spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.”
40 [af]When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. 41 But while they still did not believe (EG)for joy, and marveled, He said to them, (EH)“Have you any food here?” 42 So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish [ag]and some honeycomb. 43 (EI)And He took it and ate in their presence.
The Scriptures Opened
44 Then He said to them, (EJ)“These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.” 45 And (EK)He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.
46 Then He said to them, (EL)“Thus it is written, [ah]and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance and (EM)remission of sins should be preached in His name (EN)to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And (EO)you are witnesses of these things. 49 (EP)Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city [ai]of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”
The Ascension(EQ)
50 And He led them out (ER)as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. 51 (ES)Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven. 52 (ET)And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually (EU)in the temple [aj]praising and blessing God. Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives(A)
39 Jesus went out as usual(B) to the Mount of Olives,(C) and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”(D) 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down(E) and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup(F) from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”(G) 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.(H) 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.[a]
45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”(I)
Jesus Arrested(J)
47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49 When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?”(K) 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.
51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.
52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard,(L) and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts,(M) and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour(N)—when darkness reigns.”(O)
Peter Disowns Jesus(P)
54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest.(Q) Peter followed at a distance.(R) 55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.”
57 But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.
58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”
“Man, I am not!” Peter replied.
59 About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”(S)
60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord(T) turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.”(U) 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.
The Guards Mock Jesus(V)
63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?” 65 And they said many other insulting things to him.(W)
Jesus Before Pilate and Herod(X)(Y)(Z)
66 At daybreak the council(AA) of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together,(AB) and Jesus was led before them. 67 “If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.”
Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer.(AC) 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”(AD)
70 They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?”(AE)
He replied, “You say that I am.”(AF)
71 Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.”
23 Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate.(AG) 2 And they began to accuse him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation.(AH) He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar(AI) and claims to be Messiah, a king.”(AJ)
3 So Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
4 Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”(AK)
5 But they insisted, “He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee(AL) and has come all the way here.”
6 On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean.(AM) 7 When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod,(AN) who was also in Jerusalem at that time.
8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him.(AO) From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort. 9 He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.(AP) 10 The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him. 11 Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe,(AQ) they sent him back to Pilate. 12 That day Herod and Pilate became friends(AR)—before this they had been enemies.
13 Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him.(AS) 15 Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. 16 Therefore, I will punish him(AT) and then release him.” [17] [b]
18 But the whole crowd shouted, “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!”(AU) 19 (Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)
20 Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. 21 But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
22 For the third time he spoke to them: “Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him.”(AV)
23 But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed. 24 So Pilate decided to grant their demand. 25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.
The Crucifixion of Jesus(AW)
26 As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene,(AX) who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.(AY) 27 A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed(AZ) for him. 28 Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.(BA) 29 For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’(BB) 30 Then
31 For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”(BD)
32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.(BE) 33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said, “Father,(BF) forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”[d](BG) And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(BH)
35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him.(BI) They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”(BJ)
36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him.(BK) They offered him wine vinegar(BL) 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews,(BM) save yourself.”
38 There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.(BN)
39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”(BO)
40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”(BP)
42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[e]”(BQ)
43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”(BR)
The Death of Jesus(BS)
44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,(BT) 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple(BU) was torn in two.(BV) 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice,(BW) “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”[f](BX) When he had said this, he breathed his last.(BY)
47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God(BZ) and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” 48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts(CA) and went away. 49 But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee,(CB) stood at a distance,(CC) watching these things.
The Burial of Jesus(CD)
50 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God.(CE) 52 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. 53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. 54 It was Preparation Day,(CF) and the Sabbath was about to begin.
55 The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee(CG) followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. 56 Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes.(CH) But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.(CI)
Jesus Has Risen(CJ)
24 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared(CK) and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.(CL) 4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning(CM) stood beside them. 5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee:(CN) 7 ‘The Son of Man(CO) must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ”(CP) 8 Then they remembered his words.(CQ)
9 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them(CR) who told this to the apostles.(CS) 11 But they did not believe(CT) the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves,(CU) and he went away,(CV) wondering to himself what had happened.
On the Road to Emmaus
13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles[g] from Jerusalem.(CW) 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them;(CX) 16 but they were kept from recognizing him.(CY)
17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”
They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas,(CZ) asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”
19 “What things?” he asked.
“About Jesus of Nazareth,”(DA) they replied. “He was a prophet,(DB) powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers(DC) handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel.(DD) And what is more, it is the third day(DE) since all this took place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us.(DF) They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”(DG)
25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?”(DH) 27 And beginning with Moses(DI) and all the Prophets,(DJ) he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.(DK)
28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.
30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it(DL) and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him,(DM) and he disappeared from their sight. 32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us(DN) while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures(DO) to us?”
33 They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together 34 and saying, “It is true! The Lord(DP) has risen and has appeared to Simon.”(DQ) 35 Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.(DR)
Jesus Appears to the Disciples
36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”(DS)
37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.(DT) 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see;(DU) a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”
40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.(DV)
44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you:(DW) Everything must be fulfilled(DX) that is written about me in the Law of Moses,(DY) the Prophets(DZ) and the Psalms.”(EA)
45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer(EB) and rise from the dead on the third day,(EC) 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name(ED) to all nations,(EE) beginning at Jerusalem.(EF) 48 You are witnesses(EG) of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised;(EH) but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
The Ascension of Jesus
50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany,(EI) he lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.(EJ) 52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 And they stayed continually at the temple,(EK) praising God.
