The Lesson of the Fig Tree

29 And he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 As soon as they come out in leaf, you see (A)for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. 31 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 (B)Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place. 33 (C)Heaven and earth will pass away, but (D)my words will not pass away.

Watch Yourselves

34 “But watch yourselves (E)lest (F)your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and (G)cares of this life, and (H)that day come upon you suddenly (I)like a trap. 35 For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 But (J)stay awake at all times, (K)praying that you may (L)have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and (M)to stand before the Son of Man.”

37 And (N)every day he was teaching in the temple, but (O)at night he went out and lodged on (P)the mount called Olivet. 38 And early in the morning (Q)all the people came to him in the temple to hear him.

The Plot to Kill Jesus

22 (R)Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called (S)the Passover. And the chief priests and the scribes (T)were seeking how to put him to death, for they feared the people.

Judas to Betray Jesus

(U)Then (V)Satan entered into (W)Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. He went away and conferred with the chief priests and (X)officers how he might betray him to them. And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. So he consented and sought an opportunity to (Y)betray him to them in the absence of a crowd.

The Passover with the Disciples

(Z)Then came (AA)the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. So Jesus[a] sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.” They said to him, “Where would you have us prepare it?” 10 He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters 11 and tell the master of the house, (AB)‘The Teacher says to you, Where is (AC)the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 And he will show you (AD)a large upper room furnished; prepare it there.” 13 And they went and found it (AE)just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

37 Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple,(G) and each evening he went out(H) to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives,(I) 38 and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.(J)

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus(K)

22 Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching,(L) and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus,(M) for they were afraid of the people. Then Satan(N) entered Judas, called Iscariot,(O) one of the Twelve. And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard(P) and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. They were delighted and agreed to give him money.(Q) He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.

Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.(W) Jesus sent Peter and John,(X) saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.”

“Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.

10 He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, 11 and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.”

13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them.(Y) So they prepared the Passover.
