Exhortation to Watch

34 “Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life and that day does not catch you unexpectedly,(A) 35 like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place and to stand before the Son of Man.”(B)

37 Every day he was teaching in the temple, and at night he would go out and spend the night on the Mount of Olives, as it was called.(C) 38 And all the people would get up early in the morning to listen to him in the temple.

The Plot to Kill Jesus

22 Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was near.(D) The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put Jesus[a] to death, for they were afraid of the people.(E)

Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was one of the twelve;(F) he went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers of the temple police about how he might betray him to them. They were greatly pleased and agreed to give him money.(G) So he consented and began to look for an opportunity to betray him to them when no crowd was present.

34 “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life,(A) and that day will close on you suddenly(B) like a trap. 35 For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 Be always on the watch, and pray(C) that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”

37 Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple,(D) and each evening he went out(E) to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives,(F) 38 and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.(G)

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus(H)

22 Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching,(I) and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus,(J) for they were afraid of the people. Then Satan(K) entered Judas, called Iscariot,(L) one of the Twelve. And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard(M) and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. They were delighted and agreed to give him money.(N) He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.
