35 but those who are (A)considered worthy to attain to (B)that age and to the resurrection from the dead (C)neither marry (D)nor are given in marriage, 36 for (E)they cannot die anymore, because they are (F)equal to angels and (G)are (H)sons of God, being (I)sons[a] of the resurrection. 37 But that the dead are raised, (J)even Moses showed, in (K)the passage about the bush, where he calls (L)the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. 38 Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all (M)live to him.” 39 Then some of the scribes (N)answered, “Teacher, you have spoken well.” 40 For (O)they no longer dared to ask him any question.

Whose Son Is the Christ?

41 (P)But he said to them, “How can they say that (Q)the Christ is (R)David's son? 42 For David himself says in the Book of Psalms,

(S)“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
43     until I make your enemies (T)your footstool.”’

44 David thus calls him Lord, so (U)how is he his son?”

Beware of the Scribes

45 (V)And in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples, 46 “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and (W)the places of honor at feasts, 47 (X)who devour widows' houses and (Y)for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”

The Widow's Offering

21 (Z)Jesus[b] looked up and saw the rich (AA)putting their gifts into (AB)the offering box, and he saw a poor widow put in two (AC)small copper coins.[c] And he said, “Truly, I tell you, (AD)this poor widow has put in more than all of them. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her (AE)poverty put in all (AF)she had to live on.”

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

(AG)And while some were speaking of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings, he said, “As for these things that you see, (AH)the days will come when there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.” And they asked him, “Teacher, (AI)when will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?” And he said, (AJ)“See that you are not led astray. For (AK)many will come in my name, saying, (AL)‘I am he!’ and, (AM)‘The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them. And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be (AN)terrified, for these things (AO)must first take place, but the end will not be at once.”

Jesus Foretells Wars and Persecution

10 Then he said to them, (AP)“Nation will rise against nation, and (AQ)kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great (AR)earthquakes, and in various places (AS)famines and pestilences. And there will be (AT)terrors and great (AU)signs from heaven. 12 But before all this (AV)they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to (AW)the synagogues and (AX)prisons, and you (AY)will be brought before (AZ)kings and (BA)governors for my name's sake. 13 (BB)This will be your opportunity to bear witness. 14 Settle it therefore in your minds (BC)not to meditate beforehand how to answer, 15 for (BD)I will give you a mouth and (BE)wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or (BF)contradict. 16 You will be delivered up (BG)even by parents and brothers[d] and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death. 17 (BH)You will be hated by all for my name's sake. 18 But (BI)not a hair of your head will perish. 19 By your (BJ)endurance you will gain your lives.

Jesus Foretells Destruction of Jerusalem

20 “But (BK)when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that (BL)its desolation has come near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it, 22 for these are (BM)days of (BN)vengeance, to fulfill (BO)all that is written. 23 (BP)Alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! For there will be great distress upon the earth and (BQ)wrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the edge of the sword and (BR)be led captive among all nations, and (BS)Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles, (BT)until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

The Coming of the Son of Man

25 “And (BU)there will be signs in sun and moon (BV)and stars, and on the earth (BW)distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For (BX)the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 And then they will see (BY)the Son of Man coming in a cloud (BZ)with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and (CA)raise your heads, because (CB)your redemption is drawing near.”

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

29 And he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 As soon as they come out in leaf, you see (CC)for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. 31 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 (CD)Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place. 33 (CE)Heaven and earth will pass away, but (CF)my words will not pass away.

Watch Yourselves

34 “But watch yourselves (CG)lest (CH)your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and (CI)cares of this life, and (CJ)that day come upon you suddenly (CK)like a trap.

35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come(A) and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children,(B) since they are children of the resurrection. 37 But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’[a](C) 38 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”

39 Some of the teachers of the law responded, “Well said, teacher!” 40 And no one dared to ask him any more questions.(D)

Whose Son Is the Messiah?(E)

41 Then Jesus said to them, “Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David?(F) 42 David himself declares in the Book of Psalms:

“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand
43 until I make your enemies
    a footstool for your feet.”’[b](G)

44 David calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”

Warning Against the Teachers of the Law

45 While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, 46 “Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.(H) 47 They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”

The Widow’s Offering(I)

21 As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury.(J) He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”(K)

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times(L)(M)

Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, “As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another;(N) every one of them will be thrown down.”

“Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?”

He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them.(O) When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”

10 Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.(P) 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.(Q)

12 “But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. 13 And so you will bear testimony to me.(R) 14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves.(S) 15 For I will give you(T) words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. 16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends,(U) and they will put some of you to death. 17 Everyone will hate you because of me.(V) 18 But not a hair of your head will perish.(W) 19 Stand firm, and you will win life.(X)

20 “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies,(Y) you will know that its desolation is near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city.(Z) 22 For this is the time of punishment(AA) in fulfillment(AB) of all that has been written. 23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled(AC) on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

25 “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.(AD) 26 People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.(AE) 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man(AF) coming in a cloud(AG) with power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”(AH)

29 He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. 30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. 31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God(AI) is near.

32 “Truly I tell you, this generation(AJ) will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.(AK)

34 “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life,(AL) and that day will close on you suddenly(AM) like a trap.
