Zaccheus Converted

19 Jesus (A)entered Jericho and was passing through. And [a]there was a man called by the name of Zaccheus; he was a chief tax collector and he was rich. Zaccheus was trying to see who Jesus was, and he was unable due to the crowd, because he was short in stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up a [b](B)sycamore tree in order to see Him, because He was about to pass through that way. And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, “Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” And he hurried and came down, and received Him [c]joyfully. When the people saw this, they all began to complain, saying, “He has gone in [d]to be the guest of a man who is a sinner!” But Zaccheus stopped and said to (C)the Lord, “Behold, Lord, half of my possessions I am giving to the poor, and if I have (D)extorted anything from anyone, I am giving back (E)four times as much.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is (F)a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

Parable of the Ten Minas

11 Now while they were listening to these things, Jesus went on to tell a parable, because (G)He was near Jerusalem and they thought that (H)the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately. 12 So He said, (I)A nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself, and then to return. 13 And he called ten of his own slaves and gave them ten [e]minas, and said to them, ‘Do business with this money [f]until I come back.’ 14 But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ 15 When he returned after receiving the kingdom, he ordered that these slaves, to whom he had given the money, be summoned to him so that he would learn how much they had made by the business they had done. 16 The first slave appeared, saying, ‘[g]Master, your [h]mina has made ten minas more.’ 17 And he said to him, ‘Well done, good slave; since you have been (J)faithful in a very little thing, you are to have authority over ten cities.’ 18 The second one came, saying, ‘Your [i]mina, [j]master, has made five minas.’ 19 And he said to him also, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’ 20 And then another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I kept tucked away in a handkerchief; 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are a demanding man; you take up what you did not lay down, and reap what you did not sow.’ 22 He *said to him, ‘[k]From your own lips I will judge you, you worthless slave. Did you know that I am a demanding man, taking up what I did not lay down, and reaping what I did not sow? 23 And so why did you not put my money in the bank, and when I came back, I would have collected it with interest?’ 24 And then he said to the other slaves who were present, ‘Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ 25 And they said to him, ‘Master, he already has ten minas.’ 26 (K)I tell you that to everyone who has, more shall be given, but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away. 27 But as for (L)these enemies of mine who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and (M)slaughter them in my presence.’”

Triumphal Entry

28 After Jesus said these things, He (N)was going on ahead, (O)going up to Jerusalem.

29 (P)When He approached Bethphage and (Q)Bethany, near the [l]mountain that is called (R)Olivet, He sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village [m]ahead of you; there, as you enter, you will find a colt tied, on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here. 31 And if anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘[n]The Lord has need of it.’” 32 So those who were sent left and found it just as He had told them. 33 And as they were untying the colt, its [o]owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 They said, “[p]The Lord has need of it.” 35 And they brought it to Jesus, (S)and they threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 Now as He was going, they were spreading their cloaks on the road. 37 And as soon as He was approaching, near the descent of (T)the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to (U)praise God [q]joyfully with a loud voice for all the [r]miracles which they had seen, 38 [s]shouting:

(V)Blessed is the (W)King, the One who comes in the name of the Lord;
Peace in heaven and (X)glory in the highest!”

39 (Y)And yet some of the Pharisees [t]in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples!” 40 Jesus replied, “I tell you, if these stop speaking, (Z)the stones will cry out!”

41 When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and (AA)wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known on this day, even you, the conditions for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes. 43 For the days will come upon you [u]when your enemies will (AB)put up a [v]barricade against you, and (AC)surround you and hem you in on every side, 44 and they will level you to the ground, and throw down your children within you, and (AD)they will not leave in you one stone upon [w]another, because you did not recognize (AE)the time of your visitation.”

Traders Driven from the Temple

45 (AF)And Jesus entered the temple grounds and began to drive out those who were selling, 46 saying to them, “It is written: ‘(AG)And My house will be a house of prayer,’ (AH)but you have made it a den of robbers.”

47 And (AI)He was teaching daily in the temple; but the chief priests and the scribes and the leading men among the people (AJ)were trying to put Him to death, 48 and yet they could not find [x]anything that they might do, for all the people were hanging on to [y]every word He said.

Jesus’ Authority Questioned

20 (AK)On one of the days while (AL)He was teaching the people in the temple and (AM)preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders (AN)confronted Him, and they declared, saying to Him, “Tell us by what authority You are doing these things, or who is the one who gave You this authority?” But He replied to them, “I will also ask you a [z]question, and you tell Me: Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?” They discussed among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us to death, since they are convinced that John was a (AO)prophet.” And so they answered that they did not know where it came from. And Jesus said to them, “Neither am I telling you by what authority I do these things.”

Parable of the Vine-growers

(AP)But He began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and leased it to [aa]vine-growers, and went on a journey for a long time. 10 At the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine-growers, so that they would give him his share of the produce of the vineyard; but the vine-growers beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 And he proceeded to send another slave; but they beat him also and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12 And he proceeded to send a third; but this one too they wounded and threw out. 13 Now the [ab]owner of the vineyard said, ‘What am I to do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will (AQ)respect him.’ 14 But when the vine-growers saw him, they discussed with one another, saying, ‘This is the heir; let’s kill him so that the inheritance will be ours.’ 15 And so they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What, then, will the [ac]owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and (AR)put these vine-growers to death, and will give the vineyard to others.” However, when they heard this, they said, “(AS)May it never happen!” 17 But [ad]Jesus looked at them and said, “Then what is this statement that has been written:

(AT)A stone which the builders rejected,
This has become (AU)the [ae]chief cornerstone’?

18 (AV)Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will crush him.”

Paying Taxes to Caesar

19 The scribes and the chief priests (AW)tried to lay hands on Him that very hour, and yet they feared the people; for they were aware that He had spoken this parable against them. 20 (AX)And so they watched Him [af]closely, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, in order (AY)that they might catch Him in some statement, so that they could hand Him over to the jurisdiction and authority of (AZ)the governor. 21 And the spies questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You speak and teach correctly, and You [ag]are not partial to anyone, but You teach the way of God on the basis of truth. 22 Is it [ah]permissible for us (BA)to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 23 But He saw through their trickery and said to them, 24 “Show Me a [ai]denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?” They said, “Caesar’s.” 25 And He said to them, “Then (BB)pay to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 26 And they were unable to (BC)catch Him in a statement in the presence of the people; and they were amazed at His answer, and said nothing.

Is There a Resurrection?

27 (BD)Now some of the (BE)Sadducees (who maintain that there is no resurrection) came to Him, 28 and they questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that (BF)if [aj]a man’s brother dies, [ak]leaving a wife, and he is childless, that his brother is to [al]marry the wife and raise up children [am]for his brother. 29 So then, there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife and died childless; 30 and the second 31 and the third [an]married her; and in the same way [ao]all seven [ap]died, leaving no children. 32 Finally the woman also died. 33 Therefore, in the resurrection, [aq]which one’s wife does the woman become? For [ar]all seven [as]married her.”

34 Jesus said to them, “The sons of (BG)this age marry and the women are given in marriage, 35 but those who are considered worthy to attain to (BH)that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; 36 for they cannot even die anymore, for they are like angels, and are (BI)sons of God, being [at]sons of the resurrection. 37 But as for the fact that the dead are raised, even Moses revealed this in (BJ)the passage about the burning bush, where he calls the Lord (BK)the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 38 (BL)Now He is not the God of the dead, but of the living; for (BM)all live to Him.” 39 Some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.” 40 For (BN)they did not have the courage to question Him any longer about anything.

41 (BO)But He said to them, “How is it that they say the [au]Christ is (BP)David’s son? 42 For David himself says in the book of Psalms,

(BQ)The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at My right hand,
43 (BR)Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’

44 Therefore David calls Him ‘Lord,’ and so how is He his son?”

45 (BS)And while all the people were listening, He said to the disciples, 46 “Beware of the scribes, (BT)who like to walk around in long robes, and love personal greetings in the marketplaces, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets, 47 who [av]devour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers. These will receive all the more condemnation.”

Zacchaeus the Tax Collector

19 Jesus entered Jericho(A) and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig(B) tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.(C)

When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.

All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”(D)

But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord,(E) “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything,(F) I will pay back four times the amount.”(G)

Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.(H) 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”(I)

The Parable of the Ten Minas(J)

11 While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God(K) was going to appear at once.(L) 12 He said: “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. 13 So he called ten of his servants(M) and gave them ten minas.[a] ‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’

14 “But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’

15 “He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it.

16 “The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’

17 “‘Well done, my good servant!’(N) his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’(O)

18 “The second came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned five more.’

19 “His master answered, ‘You take charge of five cities.’

20 “Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. 21 I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’(P)

22 “His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words,(Q) you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow?(R) 23 Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’

24 “Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’

25 “‘Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’

26 “He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away.(S) 27 But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.’”

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(T)(U)

28 After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.(V) 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany(W) at the hill called the Mount of Olives,(X) he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30 “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”

32 Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them.(Y) 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”

34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.”

35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks(Z) on the road.

37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives,(AA) the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:

38 “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”[b](AB)

“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”(AC)

39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”(AD)

40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”(AE)

41 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it(AF) 42 and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. 43 The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.(AG) 44 They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls.(AH) They will not leave one stone on another,(AI) because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming(AJ) to you.”

Jesus at the Temple(AK)

45 When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling. 46 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be a house of prayer’[c];(AL) but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’[d](AM)

47 Every day he was teaching at the temple.(AN) But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.(AO) 48 Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.

The Authority of Jesus Questioned(AP)

20 One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts(AQ) and proclaiming the good news,(AR) the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to him. “Tell us by what authority you are doing these things,” they said. “Who gave you this authority?”(AS)

He replied, “I will also ask you a question. Tell me: John’s baptism(AT)—was it from heaven, or of human origin?”

They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’ But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ all the people(AU) will stone us, because they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”(AV)

So they answered, “We don’t know where it was from.”

Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”

The Parable of the Tenants(AW)

He went on to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard,(AX) rented it to some farmers and went away for a long time.(AY) 10 At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated shamefully and sent away empty-handed. 12 He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out.

13 “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love;(AZ) perhaps they will respect him.’

14 “But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. ‘This is the heir,’ they said. ‘Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 15 So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

“What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and kill those tenants(BA) and give the vineyard to others.”

When the people heard this, they said, “God forbid!”

17 Jesus looked directly at them and asked, “Then what is the meaning of that which is written:

“‘The stone the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone’[e]?(BB)

18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”(BC)

19 The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him(BD) immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.(BE)

Paying Taxes to Caesar(BF)

20 Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said,(BG) so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.(BH) 21 So the spies questioned him: “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.(BI) 22 Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”

23 He saw through their duplicity and said to them, 24 “Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?”

“Caesar’s,” they replied.

25 He said to them, “Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s,(BJ) and to God what is God’s.”

26 They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent.

The Resurrection and Marriage(BK)

27 Some of the Sadducees,(BL) who say there is no resurrection,(BM) came to Jesus with a question. 28 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.(BN) 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless. 30 The second 31 and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children. 32 Finally, the woman died too. 33 Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”

34 Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come(BO) and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children,(BP) since they are children of the resurrection. 37 But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’[f](BQ) 38 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”

39 Some of the teachers of the law responded, “Well said, teacher!” 40 And no one dared to ask him any more questions.(BR)

Whose Son Is the Messiah?(BS)

41 Then Jesus said to them, “Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David?(BT) 42 David himself declares in the Book of Psalms:

“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand
43 until I make your enemies
    a footstool for your feet.”’[g](BU)

44 David calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”

Warning Against the Teachers of the Law

45 While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, 46 “Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.(BV) 47 They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”
