47 Every day he was teaching at the temple.(A) But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.(B) 48 Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.

The Authority of Jesus Questioned(C)

20 One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts(D) and proclaiming the good news,(E) the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to him. “Tell us by what authority you are doing these things,” they said. “Who gave you this authority?”(F)

He replied, “I will also ask you a question. Tell me: John’s baptism(G)—was it from heaven, or of human origin?”

47 And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him,

48 And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.

20 And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders,

And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority?

And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me:

The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?
