The Rich Ruler

18 (A)And a ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to (B)inherit eternal life?” 19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: (C)‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour your father and mother.’” 21 And he said, (D)“All these I have kept from my youth.” 22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. (E)Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have (F)treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 23 (G)But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich. 24 Jesus, seeing that he had become sad, said, (H)“How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter (I)the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter (J)the kingdom of God.” 26 Those who heard it said, “Then who can be saved?” 27 But he said, (K)“What is impossible with men is possible with God.” 28 And Peter said, “See, (L)we have left our homes and followed you.” 29 And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, (M)there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers[a] or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 who will not receive (N)many times more (O)in this time, and in (P)the age to come eternal life.”

Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time

31 (Q)And taking the twelve, he said to them, “See, (R)we are going up to Jerusalem, and (S)everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished. 32 For he will be (T)delivered over to the Gentiles and will be (U)mocked and shamefully treated and (V)spat upon. 33 And after flogging him, they will kill him, and on (W)the third day he will rise.” 34 (X)But they understood none of these things. (Y)This saying was hidden from them, and they did not grasp what was said.

Jesus Heals a Blind Beggar

35 (Z)As he drew near to Jericho, (AA)a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36 And hearing a crowd going by, he enquired what this meant. 37 They told him, (AB)“Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” 38 And he cried out, “Jesus, (AC)Son of David, have mercy on me!” 39 And those who were in front (AD)rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 40 And Jesus stopped and commanded him to be brought to him. And when he came near, he asked him, 41 (AE)“What do you want me to do for you?” He said, “Lord, let me recover my sight.” 42 And Jesus said to him, “Recover your sight; (AF)your faith has (AG)made you well.” 43 And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him, (AH)glorifying God. And (AI)all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

The Rich and the Kingdom of God(A)

18 A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(B)

19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’[a](C)

21 “All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.

22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor,(D) and you will have treasure in heaven.(E) Then come, follow me.”

23 When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy. 24 Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!(F) 25 Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?”

27 Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”(G)

28 Peter said to him, “We have left all we had to follow you!”(H)

29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30 will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come(I) eternal life.”(J)

Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time(K)

31 Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, “We are going up to Jerusalem,(L) and everything that is written by the prophets(M) about the Son of Man(N) will be fulfilled. 32 He will be delivered over to the Gentiles.(O) They will mock him, insult him and spit on him; 33 they will flog him(P) and kill him.(Q) On the third day(R) he will rise again.”(S)

34 The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about.(T)

A Blind Beggar Receives His Sight(U)

35 As Jesus approached Jericho,(V) a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36 When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. 37 They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.”(W)

38 He called out, “Jesus, Son of David,(X) have mercy(Y) on me!”

39 Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”(Z)

40 Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, 41 “What do you want me to do for you?”

“Lord, I want to see,” he replied.

42 Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.”(AA) 43 Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.(AB)
