The Parable of the Dishonest Manager
16 Then Jesus[a] said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was squandering his property. 2 So he summoned him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you? Give me an accounting of your management, because you cannot be my manager any longer.’ 3 Then the manager said to himself, ‘What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. 4 I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their homes.’ 5 So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ 6 He answered, ‘A hundred jugs of olive oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty.’ 7 Then he asked another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ He replied, ‘A hundred containers of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill and make it eighty.’ 8 And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. 9 And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth[b] so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes.[c]
10 “Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much. 11 If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth,[d] who will entrust to you the true riches? 12 And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own? 13 No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”[e]
The Law and the Kingdom of God
14 The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all this, and they ridiculed him. 15 So he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of others; but God knows your hearts; for what is prized by human beings is an abomination in the sight of God.
16 “The law and the prophets were in effect until John came; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is proclaimed, and everyone tries to enter it by force.[f] 17 But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than for one stroke of a letter in the law to be dropped.
18 “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and whoever marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.
The Rich Man and Lazarus
19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man’s table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham.[g] The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side.[h] 24 He called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony. 26 Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us.’ 27 He said, ‘Then, father, I beg you to send him to my father’s house— 28 for I have five brothers—that he may warn them, so that they will not also come into this place of torment.’ 29 Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them.’ 30 He said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

16 (A)Gesù diceva ancora ai [suoi] discepoli: «C’era un uomo ricco che aveva un amministratore, il quale fu accusato davanti a lui di sperperare i suoi beni. 2 Egli lo chiamò e gli disse: “Che cos’è questo che sento dire di te? Rendi conto della tua amministrazione, perché tu non puoi più essere amministratore”. 3 L’amministratore disse fra sé: “Che farò, ora che il padrone mi toglie l’amministrazione? Di zappare non sono capace; di mendicare mi vergogno. 4 So quello che farò, perché qualcuno mi riceva in casa sua quando sarò rimosso dall’amministrazione”. 5 Fece venire uno per uno i debitori del suo padrone e disse al primo: “Quanto devi al mio padrone?” 6 Quello rispose: “Cento bati d’olio”. Egli disse: “Prendi la tua scritta, siedi e scrivi presto: cinquanta”. 7 Poi disse a un altro: “E tu, quanto devi?” Quello rispose: “Cento cori di grano”. Egli disse: “Prendi la tua scritta e scrivi: ottanta”. 8 E il padrone lodò l’amministratore disonesto perché aveva agito con avvedutezza; poiché i figli di questo mondo, nelle relazioni con quelli della loro generazione, sono più avveduti dei figli della luce.
9 E io vi dico: fatevi degli amici con le ricchezze ingiuste, perché quando esse verranno a mancare[a], quelli vi ricevano nelle dimore eterne. 10 Chi è fedele nelle cose minime è fedele anche nelle grandi, e chi è ingiusto nelle cose minime è ingiusto anche nelle grandi. 11 Se dunque non siete stati fedeli nelle ricchezze ingiuste, chi vi affiderà quelle vere? 12 E, se non siete stati fedeli nei beni altrui, chi vi darà i vostri? 13 Nessun domestico può servire due padroni; perché o odierà l’uno e amerà l’altro, o avrà riguardo per l’uno e disprezzo per l’altro. Voi non potete servire Dio e Mammona».
Gesù condanna l’avarizia
14 (B)I farisei[b], che amavano il denaro, udivano tutte queste cose e si beffavano di lui. 15 Ed egli disse loro: «Voi vi proclamate giusti davanti agli uomini, ma Dio conosce i vostri cuori; perché quello che è eccelso tra gli uomini è abominevole davanti a Dio.
16 La legge e i profeti hanno durato fino a Giovanni; da quel tempo è annunciata la buona notizia del regno di Dio, e ciascuno vi entra a forza. 17 È più facile che passino cielo e terra, anziché cada un solo apice[c] della legge.
Il ripudio
18 (C)«Chiunque manda via la moglie e ne sposa un’altra commette adulterio, e chi sposa[d] una donna mandata via dal marito commette adulterio.
Il ricco e Lazzaro
19 (D)«C’era un uomo ricco, che si vestiva di porpora e di bisso, e ogni giorno si divertiva splendidamente. 20 Un mendicante, chiamato Lazzaro, stava[e] alla sua porta, pieno di ulceri 21 e bramoso di sfamarsi con quello che cadeva[f] dalla tavola del ricco; e perfino i cani venivano a leccargli le ulceri. 22 Avvenne che il povero morì e fu portato dagli angeli nel seno di Abraamo[g]; morì anche il ricco, e fu sepolto. 23 E nell’Ades[h], essendo nei tormenti, alzò gli occhi e vide da lontano Abraamo, e Lazzaro nel suo seno; 24 ed esclamò: “Padre Abraamo, abbi pietà di me, e manda Lazzaro a intingere la punta del dito nell’acqua per rinfrescarmi la lingua, perché sono tormentato in questa fiamma”. 25 Ma Abraamo disse: “Figlio, ricòrdati che tu nella tua vita hai ricevuto i tuoi beni e che Lazzaro similmente ricevette i mali; ma ora qui egli è consolato, e tu sei tormentato. 26 Oltre a tutto questo, fra noi e voi è posta una grande voragine, perché quelli che vorrebbero passare di qui a voi non possano, né di là si passi da noi”. 27 Ed egli disse: “Ti prego, dunque, o padre, che tu lo mandi a casa di mio padre, 28 perché ho cinque fratelli, affinché li avverta, e non vengano anche loro in questo luogo di tormento”. 29 Abraamo [gli] disse: “Hanno Mosè e i profeti; ascoltino quelli”. 30 Ed egli: “No, padre Abraamo; ma se qualcuno dai morti va a loro, si ravvederanno”. 31 Abraamo rispose: “Se non ascoltano Mosè e i profeti, non si lasceranno persuadere neppure se uno dei morti risuscita”».

16 Azután Jézus a tanítványainak mondott egy példázatot: „Volt egy gazdag ember, és annak egy intézője, akire rábízta egész gazdasága irányítását. Az intézőt egyszer bevádolták a gazdánál, hogy elpazarolja a rábízott vagyont. 2 Ezért a gazda magához hívatta, és felelősségre vonta: »Mit hallok rólad?! Számolj el, hogyan gazdálkodtál a vagyonommal, mert elbocsátalak!« 3 Erre az így gondolkozott: »Mit tegyek? Látom, hogy elvesztem az állásomat! Kapálni nem tudok, koldulni meg szégyellek. 4 Tudom már, mit tegyek, hogy az emberek befogadjanak a házukba, amikor majd elvesztem az állásomat!«
5 Azután egyenként magához hívatta a tulajdonos adósait. Megkérdezte az elsőtől: »Mennyivel tartozol?« 6 Az így felelt: »Száz korsó[a] olívaolajjal.« Mire ő azt mondta: »Itt a papírod, ülj le, és gyorsan javítsd ki ötvenre!« 7 Azután a másodiktól is megkérdezte: »Hát te mennyivel tartozol?« Az pedig így válaszolt: »Száz kórus[b] búzával.« Ekkor ő ezt mondta: »Itt a papírod, javítsd ki nyolcvanra!«
8 Később a gazda mégis dicsérte ezt a csaló intézőt, mert az okosan viselkedett. Mert akik ehhez a világhoz tartoznak, okosabban bánnak egymással, mint azok, akik a világossághoz tartoznak.
9 Én pedig azt mondom nektek, hogy használjátok fel a vagyonotokat és pénzeteket arra, hogy barátokat szerezzetek magatoknak! Így azután, amikor majd meghaltok, azok a barátok örömmel fogadnak titeket, amikor megérkeztek az örök hazába. 10 Aki hűségesen gazdálkodik a kevéssel, arra sokat is rá lehet bízni. De aki hűtlenül kezeli a keveset, az akkor is csalni fog, mikor sokat bíznak rá. 11 Ezért, ha a világi vagyonnal és a pénzzel nem gazdálkodtok hűségesen, akkor nem fogják rátok bízni az igazi gazdagságot! 12 Ha nem gazdálkodtok hűségesen a mások vagyonával és pénzével, akkor nem fogják rátok bízni azt sem, ami pedig a tiétek!
Nem szolgálhatsz egyszerre két úrnak!
13 Egyetlen szolga sem szolgálhat egyszerre két úrnak, mert vagy az egyiket gyűlöli, és a másikat szereti, vagy az egyikhez ragaszkodik, és a másikat megveti. Nem szolgálhatjátok egyszerre Istent és a Pénzt.”[c]
14 Amikor hallották ezt a farizeusok, akik pénzsóvárak voltak, kigúnyolták Jézust. 15 Ő pedig ezt mondta nekik: „Ti elhitetitek az emberekkel, hogy igazságosak vagytok, de Istent nem tudjátok becsapni, mert ő ismeri a szíveteket. Amit az emberek fontosnak és értékesnek tartanak, az Isten számára utálatos!
A Törvényről(A)
16 Bemerítő János megérkezése előtt az embereket Mózes Törvénye és a próféták írásai szerint tanították. János fellépése óta azonban Isten Királyságának az örömüzenetét hirdetjük, és mindenki itt tolong, hogy bemehessen a Királyságba. 17 Mégis, a Törvényből egyetlen betű vagy pont sem veszíti el érvényességét! Még az ég és a föld is hamarabb elmúlik, mint hogy ez megtörténjen!”
A válásról
18 „Aki a feleségétől elválik, és mást vesz feleségül, az házasságtörést követ el. Aki elvált asszonyt vesz feleségül, az is házasságtörést követ el.”
A gazdag és Lázár
19 Jézus ezt mondta: „Volt egyszer egy gazdag ember, aki mindig a legdrágább, legfinomabb ruhákat viselte, és napjait fényűző lakomákkal töltötte. 20 A háza kapujában egy sebekkel borított szegény koldus feküdt, akit Lázárnak hívtak. 21 Arra vágyott, hogy legalább a gazdag asztaláról lehulló maradékokkal jóllakhasson, de csak a kutyák jártak hozzá, és a sebeit nyalogatták.
22 Egyszer aztán meghalt a koldus, és az angyalok oda vitték, ahol most Ábrahám él. A gazdag is meghalt, és eltemették, 23 de ő a halottak országába került. Egyszer, amikor gyötrelmei között felnézett, meglátta a távolban Ábrahámot, mellette pedig Lázárt. 24 Ekkor felkiáltott: »Atyám, Ábrahám, könyörülj rajtam, és küldd el Lázárt, hogy a vízbe mártott ujjával lehűtse a nyelvemet, mert borzasztóan éget ez a tűz!«
25 De Ábrahám így válaszolt: »Fiam, emlékezz csak! Amíg a földön éltél, részed volt minden földi jóban. Lázárnak akkor csak a nélkülözés, meg a szenvedés jutott. Most neki a vigasztalás, neked pedig a szenvedés a részed. 26 Ezen felül köztünk és köztetek nagy és átjárhatatlan szakadék van. Innen senki sem mehet át hozzátok, és tőletek sem jöhet át senki.«
27 Ekkor a gazdag így kérte: »Atyám, akkor legalább küldd el Lázárt az apám házához! 28 Figyelmeztesse az öt testvéremet, nehogy ők is ide kerüljenek, a gyötrődés helyére!«
29 De Ábrahám így válaszolt: »Nekik ott van Mózes Törvénye és a próféták írásai, hallgassanak rájuk!«
30 De a gazdag tovább vitatkozott: »Nem úgy van, Atyám! Ha valaki a halottak közül megy vissza hozzájuk, akkor biztosan megváltoztatják az életüket.«
31 Ábrahám így válaszolt: »Ha Mózesre és a prófétákra nem hallgatnak, akkor az sem győzi meg őket, ha valaki feltámad a halottak közül.«”

16 Jésus dit encore à ses disciples : Un grand propriétaire avait un gérant. On vint lui dénoncer sa conduite car il gaspillait ses biens. 2 Le maître le fit appeler et lui dit : « Qu’est-ce que j’apprends à ton sujet ? Remets-moi les comptes de ta gestion, car tu ne continueras pas à gérer mes affaires. »
3 Le gérant se dit : « Que vais-je faire, puisque mon maître m’enlève la gestion de ses biens ? Travailler comme ouvrier agricole ? Je n’en ai pas la force. Me mettre à mendier ? J’en aurais honte. 4 Ah ! je sais ce que je vais faire pour que des gens me reçoivent chez eux lorsque j’aurai perdu ma place. »
5 Là-dessus, il fait venir un à un tous les débiteurs de son maître. Il dit au premier : « Combien dois-tu à mon maître ?
6 – Quarante hectolitres d’huile d’olive, lui répond celui-ci.
– Voici ta reconnaissance de dette, lui dit le gérant, assieds-toi là, dépêche-toi et inscris vingt hectolitres. »
7 Ensuite il dit à un autre : « Et toi, combien dois-tu ?
– Cinq cents sacs de blé.
– Prends ta reconnaissance de dette, reprend le gérant, et inscris-en quatre cents. »
8 Le maître admira l’habileté avec laquelle ce gérant malhonnête s’y était pris[a]. En effet, ceux qui vivent pour ce monde sont plus avisés dans leurs affaires avec leurs semblables que les enfants de la lumière.
9 Et moi je vous déclare : Si vous avez de ces richesses entachées d’injustice, utilisez-les pour vous faire des amis. Ainsi, le jour où elles vous échapperont, ils vous accueilleront dans les demeures éternelles. 10 Si quelqu’un est fidèle dans les petites choses, on peut aussi lui faire confiance pour ce qui est important. Mais celui qui n’est pas fidèle dans les petites choses ne l’est pas non plus pour ce qui est important. 11 Si donc vous n’avez pas été fidèles dans la gestion des richesses injustes, qui vous confiera les véritables ? 12 Si vous n’avez pas été fidèles dans la gestion du bien d’autrui, qui vous donnera celui qui vous est personnellement destiné ?

13 Aucun serviteur ne peut être en même temps au service de deux maîtres. En effet, ou bien il détestera l’un et aimera l’autre ; ou bien il sera dévoué au premier et méprisera le second. Vous ne pouvez pas servir en même temps Dieu et l’Argent.
14 En entendant toutes ces recommandations, les pharisiens, qui étaient très attachés à l’argent, se moquaient de Jésus.
15 Mais il leur dit : Vous, vous vous faites passer vous-mêmes pour justes aux yeux de tout le monde, mais Dieu connaît le fond de votre cœur. Ce qui est en haute estime parmi les hommes, Dieu l’a en horreur.
La Loi et le royaume(A)
16 L’époque de la Loi et des prophètes va jusqu’à Jean-Baptiste ; depuis qu’il est venu, le royaume de Dieu est annoncé, et chacun use de violence pour y entrer.

17 Il serait plus facile au ciel et à la terre de disparaître qu’à un trait de lettre de la Loi.

18 Celui qui divorce d’avec sa femme et se remarie commet un adultère, et celui qui épouse une femme divorcée d’avec son mari commet un adultère.
L’homme riche et le pauvre Lazare
19 Il y avait un homme riche, toujours vêtu d’habits coûteux et raffinés[b]. Sa vie n’était chaque jour que festins et plaisirs. 20 Un pauvre, nommé Lazare, se tenait couché devant le portail de sa villa, le corps couvert de plaies purulentes. 21 Il aurait bien voulu calmer sa faim avec les miettes qui tombaient de la table du riche. Les chiens mêmes venaient lécher ses plaies.
22 Le pauvre mourut, et les anges l’emportèrent auprès d’Abraham. Le riche mourut à son tour, et on l’enterra. 23 Du séjour des morts, où il souffrait cruellement, il leva les yeux et aperçut, très loin, Abraham, et Lazare à côté de lui.
24 Alors il s’écria : « Abraham, mon père, aie pitié de moi ! Envoie donc Lazare, qu’il trempe le bout de son doigt dans l’eau et me rafraîchisse la langue, car je souffre horriblement dans ces flammes. »
25 Mais Abraham lui répondit : « Mon fils, souviens-toi de combien de bonnes choses tu as joui pendant ta vie, tandis que Lazare n’a connu que des malheurs. A présent, ici, c’est lui qui est consolé, tandis que toi, tu es dans les tourments. 26 De plus, il y a maintenant un immense abîme entre nous et vous et, même si on le voulait, on ne pourrait ni le franchir pour aller d’ici vers vous, ni le traverser pour venir de chez vous ici.
27 – Dans ce cas, dit alors le riche, je t’en conjure, père, envoie au moins Lazare dans la maison de mon père, 28 car j’ai cinq frères ; qu’il les avertisse pour qu’ils n’aboutissent pas, eux aussi, dans ce lieu de tourments.
29 – Tes frères ont les écrits de Moïse et des prophètes, lui répondit Abraham ; qu’ils les écoutent !
30 – Non, père Abraham, reprit l’autre. Mais si quelqu’un revient du séjour des morts et va les trouver, ils changeront. »
31 Mais Abraham répliqua : « S’ils n’écoutent ni Moïse ni les prophètes, ils ne se laisseront pas davantage convaincre par un mort revenant à la vie ! »
