10 “Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much, and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much.(A) 11 If, then, you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth,[a] who will entrust to you the true riches?(B) 12 And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own? 13 No slave can serve two masters, for a slave will either hate the one and love the other or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”[b](C)

The Law and the Kingdom of God

14 The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all this, and they ridiculed him.(D) 15 So he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts, for what is prized by humans is an abomination in the sight of God.(E)

16 “The Law and the Prophets were until John came; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is being proclaimed, and everyone tries to enter it by force.[c](F) 17 But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one stroke of a letter in the law to be dropped.(G)

10 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much,(A) and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. 11 So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth,(B) who will trust you with true riches? 12 And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?

13 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”(C)

14 The Pharisees, who loved money,(D) heard all this and were sneering at Jesus.(E) 15 He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves(F) in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts.(G) What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.

16 “The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John.(H) Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached,(I) and everyone is forcing their way into it. 17 It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.(J)
