Call to Repent

13 Just at that time some people came who told Jesus about the [a]Galileans whose blood Pilate [the governor] had mixed with their sacrifices. Jesus replied to them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans because they have suffered in this way? I tell you, no; but unless you repent [change your old way of thinking, turn from your sinful ways and live changed lives], you will all likewise perish. Or do you assume that [b]those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed were worse sinners than all the others who live in Jerusalem? I tell you, no; but unless you repent [change your old way of thinking, turn from your sinful ways and live changed lives], you will all likewise perish.”

Parable of the Fig Tree

Then He began telling them this parable: “A certain man had a fig tree that had been planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it, but did not find any; so he said to the vineyard-keeper, ‘For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree and have found none. Cut it down! Why does it even use up the ground [depleting the soil and blocking the sunlight]?’ But he replied to him, ‘Let it alone, sir, [just] one more year until I dig around it and put in fertilizer; and if it bears fruit after this, fine; but if not, cut it down.’”

Healing on the Sabbath

10 Now Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And there was a woman who for eighteen years had had an illness caused by a spirit (demon). She was bent double, and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, He called her over and said to her, “Woman, you are released from your illness.” 13 Then He laid His hands on her; and immediately she stood erect again and she began glorifying and praising God. 14 But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, began saying to the crowd in response, “There are six days in which work ought to be done; so come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day.”(A) 15 But the Lord replied to him, “You hypocrites (play-actors, pretenders)! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead it away to water it? 16 And this woman, a daughter (descendant) of Abraham whom Satan has bound for eighteen long years, should she not have been released from this bond on the Sabbath day?” 17 As He was saying this, all His opponents were being humiliated; and the entire crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things that were being done by Him.

Parables of Mustard Seed and Leaven

18 So this led Him to say, “What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it?(B) 19 It is like a [c]mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his own garden; and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the sky found shelter and nested in its branches.”(C)

20 And again He said, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? 21 It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three peck measures of flour until it was all leavened.”(D)

Teaching in the Villages

22 Jesus journeyed on through cities and villages, teaching and making His way toward Jerusalem. 23 And someone asked Him, “Lord, will only a few be saved [from the penalties of the last judgment]?” And He said to them, 24 “Strive to enter through the narrow door [force aside unbelief and the attractions of sin]; for many, I tell you, will try to enter [by their own works] and will not be able. 25 Once the head of the house gets up and closes the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock on the door [again and again], saying, ‘Lord, open to us!’ then He will answer you, ‘I do not know where you are from [for you are not of My household].’ 26 Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets’; 27 but He will say to you, ‘I do not know where you are from; depart from Me, all you evildoers!’(E) 28 In that place there will be weeping [in sorrow and pain] and grinding of teeth [in distress and anger] when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves being thrown out and driven away. 29 And people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and they will sit down [and feast at the table] in the kingdom of God. 30 And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

31 At that very hour some Pharisees came up and said to Him, “Leave and go away from here, because Herod [Antipas] wants to kill You.” 32 And He said to them, “Go and tell that fox [that sly, cowardly man], ‘Listen carefully: I cast out demons and perform healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I reach My goal.’ 33 Nevertheless I must travel on today and tomorrow and the day after that—for it cannot be that a prophet would die outside of Jerusalem. 34 [d]O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones [to death] those [messengers] who are sent to her [by God]! How often I have wanted to gather your children together [around Me], just as a hen gathers her young under her wings, but you were not willing!(F) 35 Listen carefully: your house is left to you desolate [abandoned by God and destitute of His protection]; and I say to you, you will not see Me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed [to be celebrated with praise] is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’”(G)

Footnotes

  1. Luke 13:1 These evidently were Jews who had come to Jerusalem to offer sacrifices at the temple. They probably were identified, rightly or wrongly, as rebels whose goal it was to overthrow Roman domination. The graphic description suggests that they were executed outside the temple complex after they had offered their sacrifices.
  2. Luke 13:4 No further details regarding this tragedy are recorded.
  3. Luke 13:19 In ancient Israel the mustard seed was the smallest known seed, and in rabbinic teaching the mustard seed was used as an example of something very small (in the Talmud).
  4. Luke 13:34 The nation of Israel personified.

Unless You Repent, You Will Perish

13 And some were present at the very time, reporting to Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate mixed with their sacrifices. And having responded, He said to them, “Do you think that these Galileans were sinners more than all the Galileans, because they have suffered these things? No, I say to you. But unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them— do you think that they were debtors[a] more than all the people dwelling in Jerusalem? No, I say to you. But unless you repent, you will all similarly perish”.

If The Tree Does Not Bear Fruit, It Will Be Cut Down

And He was telling this parable— “A certain one had a fig tree having been planted in his vineyard. And he came seeking fruit on it, and did not find it. And he said to the vine-keeper, ‘Behold— it is three years from which time I am coming seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I am not finding it. Therefore, cut it down! Why is it even using-up[b] the soil?’ But the one, having responded, says to him, ‘Master, leave it also this year, until I dig around it and throw manure. And if it produces fruit in the future— otherwise indeed, cut it down’”.

Jesus Heals a Woman On The Sabbath. The Synagogue Official Objects

10 Now He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath, 11 and behold— there was a woman having a spirit of [c] infirmity eighteen years. And she was bending-over, and not being able to bend-up completely. 12 And having seen her, Jesus called to her and said to her, “Woman, you have been released from your infirmity”. 13 And He laid His hands on her. And at-once she was made-straight. And she was glorifying God. 14 But having responded, the synagogue official— being indignant because Jesus cured on the Sabbath— was saying to the crowd that “There are six days on which one ought-to work. So be cured while coming on them, and not on the day of the Sabbath”. 15 But the Lord responded to him and said, “Hypocrites! Does not each of you on the Sabbath release his ox or donkey from the manger[d], and having led it away, water it? 16 But this one, being a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for behold, ten and eight years— ought she not to have been released from this bond on the day of the Sabbath?” 17 And while He was saying these things, all the ones being opposed to Him were being put-to-shame.

The Crowd Rejoices Over What Jesus Did. He Says, The Kingdom of God Starts Small

And the whole crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things being done by Him. 18 Therefore, He was saying, “To what is the kingdom of God like, and to what shall I liken it? 19 It is like a seed of a mustard-plant which, having taken, a man threw into his own garden. And it grew and became a tree. And the birds of the heaven nested in its branches”. 20 And again He said, “To what shall I liken the kingdom of God? 21 It is like leaven, which having taken, a woman concealed[e] into three measures of wheat-flour until which time the whole thing was leavened”.

Enter Through The Narrow Door Before It Is Too Late

22 And He was journeying-through according to cities and villages, teaching and making the journey to Jerusalem. 23 And someone said to Him, “Master, are the ones being saved few?” And the One said to them, 24 “Be striving to enter through the narrow door, because many, I say to you, will seek to enter, and will not be able. 25 From whatever time the house-master arises and shuts the door, and you begin to stand outside and to be knocking on the door saying ‘Master, open for us’, and having responded, he will say to you, ‘I do not know you, where you are from’— 26 then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught on our wide-roads’. 27 And he will speak, saying to you, ‘I do not know you— where you are from. Depart from me, all you workers of unrighteousness’. 28 In that place, there will be the weeping and the grinding of teeth when you shall see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you being thrown outside. 29 And they will come from east and west, and from north and south, and lie back [to eat] in the kingdom of God. 30 And behold— there are last ones who will be first, and there are first ones who will be last”.

Jesus Proceeds Away From Herod, Because a Prophet Cannot Perish Outside Jerusalem

31 At the very hour, some Pharisees came to Him, saying to Him, “Go out, and proceed from here, because Herod[f] wants to kill You”. 32 And He said to them, “Having gone, tell this fox, ‘Behold— I am casting-out demons and performing[g] healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I come-to-the-end[h]’. 33 Nevertheless, I must proceed today and tomorrow and the next day, because it cannot-be that a prophet should perish outside of Jerusalem. 34 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one killing the prophets and stoning the ones having been sent to her. How often I wanted to gather-together your children the way a hen does her own brood under her wings, and you did not want it. 35 Behold— your house is being left to you. And I say to you, you will by no means see Me until[i] the time will come when you say, ‘Blessed is the One coming in the name of the Lord’”.

Everyone Should Be Sorry for Their Sins and Turn from Them

13 At this time some people came to Jesus. They told Him that Pilate had killed some people from the country of Galilee. It was while they were giving gifts of animals on the altar in worship to God. Pilate put their blood together with the blood of the animals. Jesus said to them, “What about these people from Galilee? Were they worse sinners than all the other people from Galilee because they suffered these things? No, I tell you. But unless you are sorry for your sins and turn from them, you too will all die. What about those eighteen men who were killed when the high building in Siloam fell on them? Do you think they were the worst sinners living in Jerusalem? No, I tell you. But unless you are sorry for your sins and turn from them, you too will all die.”

The Picture-Story of the Fig Tree Which Had No Fruit

Then He told them this picture-story: “A man had a fig tree in his grape-field. He looked for fruit on it but found none. He said to his servant, ‘See! For three years I have been coming here looking for fruit on this fig tree. I never find any. Cut it down. Why does it even waste the ground?’ The servant said, ‘Sir! Leave it here one more year. I will dig around it and put plant food on it. It may be that it will give fruit next year. If it does not, then cut it down.’”

Jesus Heals on the Day of Rest

10 Jesus was teaching in one of the Jewish places of worship on the Day of Rest. 11 A woman was there who had suffered for eighteen years because of a demon. She was not able to stand up straight. 12 Jesus saw her and said, “Woman, you are now free from your trouble!” 13 Then He put His hand on her. At once she stood up straight and gave thanks to God.

14 The leader of the Jewish place of worship was angry because Jesus healed on the Day of Rest. The leader said to the people, “There are six days in which work should be done. Come on those days and get healed. Do not come to be healed on the Day of Rest.” 15 The Lord said to him, “You pretend to be someone you are not! Do not each of you let his cow or his donkey out and lead them to water on the Day of Rest? 16 Should not this Jewish woman be made free from this trouble on the Day of Rest? She has been chained by Satan for eighteen years.” 17 When He said this, all those who were against Him were ashamed. All the many people were glad for the great things being done by Him.

The Picture-Stories of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast (A)

18 Then Jesus asked, “What is the holy nation of God like? What can I use to show you? 19 It is like a mustard seed which a man took and planted in his field. It grew and became a tree. The birds of the sky stayed in its branches.” 20 Again Jesus said, “What can I use to show you what the holy nation of God is like? 21 It is like yeast that a woman put into three pails of flour until it was all full of yeast.”

Jesus Teaches on the Way to Jerusalem

22 Jesus taught the people as He went through the cities and towns on His way to Jerusalem. 23 Someone asked Jesus, “Lord, will only a few people be saved from the punishment of sin?” Jesus said to them, 24 “Work hard to go in through the narrow door. I tell you, many will try to go in but will not be able to go in. 25 The owner of the house will get up and shut the door. You who are on the outside will knock on the door and say, ‘Lord, let us in.’ Then He will say, ‘I do not know you.’ 26 Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with You when You taught in our streets.’ 27 But He will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know you. Go away from Me. You are sinful.’

28 “There will be loud crying and grinding of teeth when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the early preachers in the holy nation of God, but you will be put out. 29 Those who sit at the table in the holy nation of God will come from the east and west and from the north and south. 30 Listen! Some are last who will be first. Some are first who will be last.”

31 That same day some of the proud religious law-keepers came to Jesus. They said, “Go away from here! Herod wants to kill You.” 32 Jesus said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘See. I put out demons and heal the sick. I will do these things today and tomorrow. And the third day My work will be finished.’ 33 But I must go on My way today and tomorrow and the day after. One who speaks for God cannot die except at Jerusalem.

Jesus Sorrows Over Jerusalem

34 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you kill the early preachers and throw stones on those sent to you. How many times I wanted to gather your children around me, as a bird gathers her young under her wings, but you would not let Me. 35 See! Your house is empty. And I tell you, you will not see Me again until the time comes when you will say, ‘Great and honored is the One Who comes in the name of the Lord.’”
