Lament over Jerusalem

31 At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, “Get away from (A)here, for (B)Herod wants to kill you.” 32 And he said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day (C)I finish my course. 33 Nevertheless, (D)I (E)must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that (F)a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.’ 34 (G)O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that (H)kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! (I)How often would I have (J)gathered (K)your children together (L)as a hen gathers her brood (M)under her wings, and (N)you were not willing! 35 Behold, (O)your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, (P)‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’”

Healing of a Man on the Sabbath

14 One Sabbath, (Q)when he went to dine at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees, they were (R)watching him carefully. And behold, there was a man before him who had dropsy. And Jesus responded to (S)the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, (T)“Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?” But they remained silent. Then he took him and healed him and sent him away. And he said to them, (U)“Which of you, having a son[a] or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?” (V)And they could not reply to these things.

The Parable of the Wedding Feast

Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed (W)how they chose the places of honor, saying to them, “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him, and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10 But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, (X)so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. 11 For (Y)everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

The Parable of the Great Banquet

12 He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you give (Z)a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers[b] or your relatives or rich neighbors, (AA)lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. 13 But when you give a feast, (AB)invite (AC)the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid (AD)at (AE)the resurrection of the just.”

Jesus’ Sorrow for Jerusalem(A)(B)

31 At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, “Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod(C) wants to kill you.”

32 He replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.’(D) 33 In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day—for surely no prophet(E) can die outside Jerusalem!

34 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,(F) and you were not willing. 35 Look, your house is left to you desolate.(G) I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’[a](H)

Jesus at a Pharisee’s House(I)

14 One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee,(J) he was being carefully watched.(K) There in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body. Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law,(L) “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?”(M) But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way.

Then he asked them, “If one of you has a child[b] or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?”(N) And they had nothing to say.

When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table,(O) he told them this parable: “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. 10 But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests. 11 For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”(P)

12 Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,(Q) 14 and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”(R)
