Christ Divides People

49 “I [a]have come to cast fire upon the earth; and [b]how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a (A)baptism [c]to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished! 51 (B)Do you think that I came to provide peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division; 52 for from now on five members in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, (C)father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

54 And He was also saying to the crowds, (D)Whenever you see a cloud rising [d]in the west, you immediately say, ‘A shower is coming,’ and so it turns out. 55 And whenever you feel a [e]south wind blowing, you say, ‘It will be a (E)hot day,’ and it turns out that way. 56 You hypocrites! (F)You know how to analyze the appearance of the earth and the sky, but how is it that you do not know how to analyze this present time?

57 “And (G)why do you not even judge by yourselves what is right? 58 For (H)when you are going with your accuser to appear before the magistrate, on the way, make an effort to [f]settle with him, so that he does not drag you before the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. 59 I tell you, you will not get out of there until you have paid up [g]the very last [h](I)lepton.”

Call to Repent

13 Now on that very occasion there were some present who reported to Him about the Galileans whose blood (J)Pilate had [i]mixed with their sacrifices. And Jesus responded and said to them, (K)Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans just because they have suffered this fate? No, I tell you, but unless you [j]repent, you will all likewise perish. Or do you think that those eighteen on whom the tower in (L)Siloam fell and killed them were worse [k](M)offenders than all the other people who live in Jerusalem? No, I tell you, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

And He began telling this parable: “A man had (N)a fig tree which had been planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and did not find any. And he said to the vineyard-keeper, ‘Look! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree [l]without finding any. (O)Cut it down! Why does it even use up the ground?’ But he answered and said to him, ‘Sir, leave it alone for this year too, until I dig around it and put in fertilizer; and if it bears fruit next year, fine; but if not, cut it down.’”
