⁴⁷ “The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows.^(A)

¹⁷ If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.^(A)

²² If I had not come and spoken to them,^(A) they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.^{(B) 23} Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. ²⁴ If I had not done among them the works no one else did,^(C) they would not be guilty of sin.^(D) As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father.

⁴¹ Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.^(A)

² If the guilty person deserves to be beaten,^(A) the judge shall make them lie down and have them flogged in his presence with the number of lashes the crime deserves, ³ but the judge must not impose more than forty lashes.^(B) If the guilty party is flogged more than that, your fellow Israelite will be degraded in your eyes.^(C)
