Jesus Rejoices

21 At that very hour Jesus[a] rejoiced in the Holy Spirit[b] and said, “I thank[c] you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.[d](A)

‘You will indeed listen but never understand,
and you will indeed look but never perceive.(D)
15 For this people’s heart has grown dull,
and their ears are hard of hearing,
and they have shut their eyes,

and understand with their heart and turn—
    and I would heal them.’(E)

The True Wisdom of God

Yet among the mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are being destroyed.(A) But we speak God’s wisdom, a hidden mystery, which God decreed before the ages for our glory and which none of the rulers of this age understood, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

God’s Wisdom Revealed by the Spirit

We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature,(A) but not the wisdom of this age(B) or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.(C) No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery(D) that has been hidden(E) and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age(F) understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.(G)

Divisions in the Church

10 Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you but that you be knit together in the same mind and the same purpose.(B) 11 For it has been made clear to me by Chloe’s people that there are quarrels among you, my brothers and sisters. 12 What I mean is that each of you says, “I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,” or “I belong to Cephas,” or “I belong to Christ.” 13 Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?(C) 14 I thank God[a] that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius,(D) 15 so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name. 16 I did baptize also the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.(E) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospel—and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power.(F)

Christ the Power and Wisdom of God

18 For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.(G) 19 For it is written,

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”

20 Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scholar? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?(H) 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of the proclamation, to save those who believe.(I) 22 For Jews ask for signs and Greeks desire wisdom, 23 but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to gentiles,(J) 24 but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.

26 Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards,[b] not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth.(K) 27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong;(L) 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to abolish things that are, 29 so that no one[c] might boast in the presence of God.(M)

A Church Divided Over Leaders

10 I appeal to you, brothers and sisters,[a](D) in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you,(E) but that you be perfectly united(F) in mind and thought. 11 My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household(G) have informed me that there are quarrels among you. 12 What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”;(H) another, “I follow Apollos”;(I) another, “I follow Cephas[b]”;(J) still another, “I follow Christ.”

13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul?(K) 14 I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus(L) and Gaius,(M) 15 so no one can say that you were baptized in my name. 16 (Yes, I also baptized the household(N) of Stephanas;(O) beyond that, I don’t remember if I baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize,(P) but to preach the gospel—not with wisdom(Q) and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Christ Crucified Is God’s Power and Wisdom

18 For the message of the cross is foolishness(R) to those who are perishing,(S) but to us who are being saved(T) it is the power of God.(U) 19 For it is written:

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”[c](V)

20 Where is the wise person?(W) Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age?(X) Has not God made foolish(Y) the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world(Z) through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save(AA) those who believe.(AB) 22 Jews demand signs(AC) and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified:(AD) a stumbling block(AE) to Jews and foolishness(AF) to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called,(AG) both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God(AH) and the wisdom of God.(AI) 25 For the foolishness(AJ) of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness(AK) of God is stronger than human strength.

26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called.(AL) Not many of you were wise(AM) by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose(AN) the foolish(AO) things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not(AP)—to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him.(AQ)
