2 just as they were handed down to us by those who (A)from the beginning [a]were (B)eyewitnesses and [b](C)servants of (D)the [c]word, 3 it seemed fitting to me as well, (E)having [d]investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you (F)in an orderly sequence, (G)most excellent (H)Theophilus; 4 so that you may know the exact truth about the [e]things you have been [f](I)taught.
John the Baptist’s Birth Foretold
5 (J)In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the (K)division of [g]Abijah; and he had a wife [h]from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 They were both (L)righteous in the sight of God, walking (M)blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord. 7 And yet they had no child, because Elizabeth was infertile, and they were both advanced in [i]years.
8 Now it happened that while (N)he was performing his priestly service before God in the appointed order of his division, 9 according to the custom of the priestly office, he was chosen by lot (O)to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And the whole multitude of the people were in prayer (P)outside at the hour of the incense offering. 11 Now (Q)an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the altar of incense. 12 Zechariah was troubled when he saw the angel, and (R)fear [j]gripped him. 13 But the angel said to him, “(S)Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and (T)you shall [k]name him John. 14 You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice over his birth. 15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; and he will (U)drink no wine or liquor, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit [l]while still in his mother’s womb. 16 And he will (V)turn many of the sons of Israel back to the Lord their God. 17 And it is he who will (W)go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of (X)Elijah, (Y)to turn the hearts of fathers back to their children, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, to (Z)make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
18 Zechariah said to the angel, “How will I know this? For (AA)I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in her [m]years.” 19 The angel answered and said to him, “I am (AB)Gabriel, who [n](AC)stands in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. 20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day when these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled at their proper time.”
21 And meanwhile the people were waiting for Zechariah, and were wondering at his delay in the temple. 22 But when he came out, he was unable to speak to them; and they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple, and he repeatedly (AD)[o]made signs to them, and remained speechless. 23 When the days of his priestly service were concluded, he went back home.
24 Now after these days his wife Elizabeth became pregnant, and she kept herself [p]in seclusion for five months, saying, 25 “This is the way the Lord has dealt with me in the days when He looked with favor upon me, to (AE)take away my disgrace among people.”

2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first(A) were eyewitnesses(B) and servants of the word.(C) 3 With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account(D) for you, most excellent(E) Theophilus,(F) 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.(G)
The Birth of John the Baptist Foretold
5 In the time of Herod king of Judea(H) there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah;(I) his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly.(J) 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.
8 Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,(K) 9 he was chosen by lot,(L) according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.(M) 10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.(N)
11 Then an angel(O) of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.(P) 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.(Q) 13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid,(R) Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.(S) 14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth,(T) 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink,(U) and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit(V) even before he is born.(W) 16 He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 And he will go on before the Lord,(X) in the spirit and power of Elijah,(Y) to turn the hearts of the parents to their children(Z) and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”(AA)
18 Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this?(AB) I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”(AC)
19 The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel.(AD) I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. 20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak(AE) until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.”
21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. 22 When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs(AF) to them but remained unable to speak.
23 When his time of service was completed, he returned home. 24 After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. 25 “The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace(AG) among the people.”

57 Now the time [a]had come for Elizabeth to give birth, and she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord had [b](A)displayed His great mercy toward her; and they were rejoicing with her.
59 And it happened that on (B)the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to call him Zechariah, [c]after his father. 60 And yet his mother responded and said, “No indeed; but (C)he shall be called John.” 61 And they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.” 62 And they [d](D)made signs to his father, as to what he wanted him called. 63 And he asked for a tablet and wrote [e]as follows, “(E)His name is John.” And they were all amazed. 64 (F)And at once his mouth was opened and his tongue freed, and he began speaking in praise of God. 65 And fear came on all those who lived around them; and all these matters were being talked about in (G)the entire hill country of Judea. 66 All who heard them kept them in mind, saying, “What then will this child turn out to be?” For indeed (H)the hand of the Lord was with him.
Zechariah’s Prophecy
67 And his father Zechariah (I)was filled with the Holy Spirit and (J)prophesied, saying:
68 “(K)Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
For He has visited us and accomplished (L)redemption for His people,
69 And has raised up a (M)horn of salvation for us
In the house of (N)His servant David—
70 (O)Just as He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets (P)from ancient times—
71 [f](Q)Salvation (R)from our enemies,
And from the hand of all who hate us;
72 (S)To show mercy to our fathers,
(T)And to remember His holy covenant,
73 (U)The oath which He swore to our father Abraham,
74 To grant us that we, being rescued from the hand of our enemies,
Would serve Him without fear,
75 (V)In holiness and righteousness before Him all our days.
76 And you, child, also will be called the (W)prophet of (X)the Most High;
For you will go on (Y)before the Lord to (Z)prepare His ways;
77 To give His people the knowledge of salvation
[g]By (AA)the forgiveness of their sins,
78 Because of the tender mercy of our God,
With which (AB)the Sunrise from on high will visit us,
79 (AC)To shine on those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death,
To guide our feet into the (AD)way of peace.”
80 (AE)Now the child grew and was becoming strong in spirit, and he lived in the deserts until the day of his public appearance to Israel.

57 When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.
59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise(A) the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, 60 but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.”(B)
61 They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has that name.”
62 Then they made signs(C) to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.”(D) 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak,(E) praising God. 65 All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea(F) people were talking about all these things. 66 Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, “What then is this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.(G)
Zechariah’s Song
67 His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit(H) and prophesied:(I)
68 “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,(J)
because he has come to his people and redeemed them.(K)
69 He has raised up a horn[a](L) of salvation for us
in the house of his servant David(M)
70 (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago),(N)
71 salvation from our enemies
and from the hand of all who hate us—
72 to show mercy to our ancestors(O)
and to remember his holy covenant,(P)
73 the oath he swore to our father Abraham:(Q)
74 to rescue us from the hand of our enemies,
and to enable us to serve him(R) without fear(S)
75 in holiness and righteousness(T) before him all our days.
76 And you, my child, will be called a prophet(U) of the Most High;(V)
for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,(W)
77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation
through the forgiveness of their sins,(X)
78 because of the tender mercy of our God,
by which the rising sun(Y) will come to us from heaven
79 to shine on those living in darkness
and in the shadow of death,(Z)
to guide our feet into the path of peace.”(AA)
80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit[b];(AB) and he lived in the wilderness until he appeared publicly to Israel.
