Die Verkündigung Johannes des Täufers
3 Aber im fünfzehnten Jahr der Regierung des Kaisers Tiberius[a], als Pontius Pilatus Statthalter von Judäa war und Herodes[b] Vierfürst von Galiläa, sein Bruder Philippus aber Vierfürst von Ituräa und dem Gebiet von Trachonitis, und Lysanias Vierfürst von Abilene,
2 unter den Hohenpriestern Hannas und Kajaphas, da erging das Wort Gottes an Johannes, den Sohn des Zacharias, in der Wüste.
3 Und er kam in die ganze Umgegend des Jordan und verkündigte eine Taufe der Buße[c] zur Vergebung der Sünden,
4 wie geschrieben steht im Buch der Worte des Propheten Jesaja, der spricht: »Die Stimme eines Rufenden [ertönt] in der Wüste: Bereitet den Weg des Herrn, macht seine Pfade eben!
5 Jedes Tal soll ausgefüllt und jeder Berg und Hügel erniedrigt werden, und das Krumme soll gerade und die holprigen Wege eben werden;
6 und alles Fleisch wird das Heil Gottes sehen.«[d]
7 Er sprach nun zu der Volksmenge, die hinausging, um sich von ihm taufen zu lassen: Schlangenbrut! Wer hat euch unterwiesen, dem kommenden Zorn zu entfliehen?
8 So bringt nun Früchte, die der Buße würdig sind[e]! Und fangt nicht an, bei euch selbst zu sagen: Wir haben Abraham zum Vater! Denn ich sage euch: Gott vermag dem Abraham aus diesen Steinen Kinder zu erwecken.
9 Es ist aber auch schon die Axt an die Wurzel der Bäume gelegt. Jeder Baum nun, der keine gute Frucht bringt, wird abgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen!
10 Da fragte ihn die Menge und sprach: Was sollen wir denn tun?
11 Und er antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Wer zwei Hemden hat, gebe dem, der keines hat; und wer Speise hat, der mache es ebenso!
12 Es kamen auch Zöllner[f], um sich taufen zu lassen, und sprachen zu ihm: Meister, was sollen wir tun?
13 Er sprach zu ihnen: Fordert nicht mehr, als was euch vorgeschrieben ist!
14 Es fragten ihn aber auch Kriegsleute und sprachen: Und was sollen wir tun? Und er sprach zu ihnen: Misshandelt niemand, erhebt keine falsche Anklage und seid zufrieden mit eurem Sold!
15 Da aber das Volk in Erwartung stand und alle in ihren Herzen sich wegen Johannes fragten, ob er vielleicht der Christus sei,
16 antwortete Johannes allen und sprach: Ich taufe euch mit Wasser; es kommt aber einer, der stärker ist als ich, und ich bin nicht würdig, ihm seinen Schuhriemen zu lösen; der wird euch mit Heiligem Geist und Feuer taufen.
17 Er hat die Worfschaufel in seiner Hand, und er wird seine Tenne durch und durch reinigen und den Weizen in seine Scheune sammeln; die Spreu aber wird er mit unauslöschlichem Feuer verbrennen!
18 Auch mit vielen anderen Ermahnungen verkündigte er dem Volk die frohe Botschaft.[g]
19 Der Vierfürst Herodes aber, da er von ihm getadelt wurde wegen Herodias, der Frau seines Bruders Philippus, und wegen all des Bösen, was Herodes tat,
20 fügte zu allem noch das hinzu, dass er den Johannes ins Gefängnis warf.
Die Taufe Jesu Christi
21 Es geschah aber, als alles Volk sich taufen ließ und auch Jesus getauft wurde und betete, da tat sich der Himmel auf,
22 und der Heilige Geist stieg in leiblicher Gestalt wie eine Taube auf ihn herab, und eine Stimme ertönte aus dem Himmel, die sprach: Du bist mein geliebter Sohn; an dir habe ich Wohlgefallen!

John the Baptist Prepares the Way(A)
3 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, (B)Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, 2 [a]while (C)Annas and Caiaphas were high priests, the word of God came to (D)John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. 3 (E)And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance (F)for the remission of sins, 4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying:
(G)“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord;
Make His paths straight.
5 Every valley shall be filled
And every mountain and hill brought low;
The crooked places shall be made straight
And the rough ways smooth;
6 And (H)all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’ ”
John Preaches to the People(I)
7 Then he said to the multitudes that came out to be baptized by him, (J)“Brood[b] of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Therefore bear fruits (K)worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. 9 And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore (L)every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
10 So the people asked him, saying, (M)“What shall we do then?”
11 He answered and said to them, (N)“He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, (O)let him do likewise.”
12 Then (P)tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?”
13 And he said to them, (Q)“Collect no more than what is appointed for you.”
14 Likewise the soldiers asked him, saying, “And what shall we do?”
So he said to them, “Do not [c]intimidate anyone (R)or accuse falsely, and be content with your wages.”
15 Now as the people were in expectation, and all reasoned in their hearts about John, whether he was the Christ or not, 16 John answered, saying to all, (S)“I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will (T)baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and (U)gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.”
18 And with many other exhortations he preached to the people. 19 (V)But Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him concerning Herodias, his [d]brother Philip’s wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, 20 also added this, above all, that he shut John up in prison.

21 When all the people were baptized, (X)it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. 22 And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am (Y)well pleased.”
