De judiska ledarna ifrågasätter Jesus fullmakt
(Matt 21:23-27; Mark 11:27-33)
20 En dag när Jesus undervisade folket i templet om evangeliet, kom översteprästerna och de skriftlärda och folkets ledare fram 2 och frågade honom: ”Säg oss vad du har för fullmakt att göra detta, och vem det är som har gett dig den fullmakten?”
3 Jesus sa: ”Jag vill också ställa en fråga till er. Svara mig: 4 Var Johannes dop från himlen eller från människorna?”
5 De började genast diskutera med varandra och sa: ”Om vi säger att det var från himlen, så kommer han att fråga varför vi inte trodde på honom. 6 Men om vi säger att det var från människor, då kommer folket att stena oss. De är ju övertygade om att Johannes var en profet.” 7 Därför svarade de till slut: ”Vi vet inte.”
8 Då sa Jesus till dem: ”I så fall säger inte jag heller vad jag har för fullmakt att göra detta.”
Liknelsen om mannen som arrenderade ut sin vingård
(Matt 21:33-46; Mark 12:1-12)
9 Sedan berättade han för folket denna liknelse: ”En man planterade en vingård och arrenderade ut den till några lantbrukare medan han själv reste bort för en längre tid. 10 När det så blev dags att skörda, sände han en av sina tjänare till lantbrukarna för att hämta den del av skörden som var hans. Men de överföll tjänaren och skickade tillbaka honom tomhänt. 11 Ägaren sände då en annan tjänare, men han blev misshandlad och förolämpad och skickades iväg tomhänt. 12 Också en tredje tjänare sändes dit, men även honom slog de blodig och kastade ut.
13 ’Vad ska jag göra?’ sa ägaren. ’Jo, jag sänder min egen älskade son. Honom visar de väl respekt för.’
14 Men när lantbrukarna fick se sonen, sa de till varandra: ’Här kommer arvtagaren. Kom så dödar vi honom, och då blir arvet vårt!’ 15 Så släpade de ut sonen ur vingården och dödade honom.”
”Vad ska nu vingårdsägaren göra med dem?” frågade Jesus. 16 ”Jo, han kommer själv dit och dödar dem och ger sedan vingården till andra.”
När de hörde detta, sa de: ”Nej! Det får aldrig hända!”
17 Men Jesus såg på dem och sa: ”Vad betyder då det som står skrivet:
’Den sten som inte dög åt byggnadsarbetarna
har blivit en hörnsten.’[a]
18 Var och en som snubblar på den stenen blir krossad, och den som stenen faller på blir söndersmulad.[b] ”
19 De skriftlärda och översteprästerna ville arrestera Jesus genast, men de var rädda för folket. De förstod att det var dem han syftade på i liknelsen.
Ska man betala skatt till kejsaren?
(Matt 22:15-22; Mark 12:13-17)
20 Medan de väntade på sitt tillfälle, skickade de iväg några som skulle låtsas vara rättfärdiga och som var ute efter att få Jesus att säga något som de kunde arrestera honom för, för att sedan kunna överlämna honom åt landshövdingens makt och myndighet.
21 ”Mästare”, frågade de honom, ”vi vet att du har rätt när du talar och undervisar. Du låter dig inte påverkas av människor, utan lär oss i sanning Guds väg. 22 Är det rätt eller inte att betala skatt till kejsaren?”
23 Men Jesus genomskådade deras list och sa: 24 ”Visa mig en denar. Vems bild finns på den, och vems underskrift?”
”Kejsarens”, svarade de.
25 ”Då så”, sa han, ”ge kejsaren det som är hans och Gud det som är Guds.”
26 De lyckades alltså inte sätta fast honom för något han sa när folket hörde på. De förvånades över hans svar och blev alldeles tysta.
Ska de döda uppstå igen?
(Matt 22:23-33; Mark 12:18-27)
27 Sedan kom några saddukeer[c] till honom. De påstår att det inte finns någon uppståndelse, så de frågade:
28 ”Mästare, Mose skrev att om en man dör barnlös, ska hans bror gifta sig med änkan och skaffa en arvtagare åt sin bror.[d] 29 Nu fanns det sju bröder. Den äldste gifte sig och dog barnlös. 30 Bror nummer två 31 och tre gifte sig med änkan, och så fortsatte det tills alla sju hade varit gifta med henne och dött utan att lämna några barn efter sig. 32 Till slut dog också kvinnan. 33 När de nu uppstår från de döda, vems hustru blir hon då? Alla sju har ju varit gifta med henne.”
34 Jesus svarade saddukeerna: ”Den här tidsålderns människor gifter sig och blir bortgifta. 35 De som anses värdiga att få vara med i den kommande tidsåldern och uppstå från de döda, de ska inte gifta sig eller bli bortgifta. 36 De kan inte heller dö, utan ska vara som änglarna. De är Guds barn, för de har uppstått. 37 Att de döda uppstår bevisar också Mose när han talar om törnbusken. Han kallar Herren för Abrahams, Isaks och Jakobs Gud.[e] 38 Gud är alltså inte en gud för döda, utan för levande. Alla är levande för honom.”
39 ”Det var bra svarat, Mästare”, sa några av de skriftlärda. 40 Och sedan vågade ingen ställa några fler frågor till honom.
Är Messias ättling till David?
(Matt 22:41-46; Mark 12:35-37)
41 Sedan frågade Jesus dem: ”Hur kan man säga att Messias är Davids Son? 42 David själv skrev ju i Psaltaren:
’Herren sa till min Herre:
Sätt dig på min högra sida,
43 tills jag har lagt dina fiender
som en pall under dina fötter.’[f]
44 David kallar honom för Herre, hur skulle han då kunna vara Davids Son?”
Jesus varnar för de religiösa ledarnas dubbelmoral
(Matt 23:1-7; Mark 12:38-39)
45 Medan folket lyssnade sa Jesus till sina lärjungar: 46 ”Akta er för de skriftlärda, som älskar att gå omkring i långa dräkter och gärna vill bli hälsade på torgen, ta plats på främsta raden i synagogan och sitta vid honnörsborden under festerna. 47 De äter änkorna ur husen och ber långa böner för syns skull. De kommer att straffas desto hårdare.”

Jesu fullmakt
20 En dag när Jesus undervisade folket i templet och predikade evangeliet, kom översteprästerna och de skriftlärda tillsammans med de äldste fram 2 och frågade honom: "Säg oss vad du har för fullmakt att göra detta och vem som har gett dig den fullmakten?" 3 Han svarade dem: "Jag har också en fråga. Säg mig: 4 Johannes dop, kom det från himlen[a] eller från människor?" 5 De överlade med varandra och sade: "Svarar vi: Från himlen, kommer han att fråga: Varför trodde ni då inte på honom? 6 Säger vi: Från människor, kommer allt folket att stena oss, eftersom de är övertygade om att Johannes var en profet." 7 Och de svarade att de inte visste varifrån det var. 8 Jesus sade till dem: "Då säger inte heller jag er vad jag har för fullmakt att göra detta."
Liknelsen om de onda vingårdsarbetarna
9 Sedan berättade han denna liknelse för folket: "En man planterade en vingård och arrenderade ut den till vingårdsarbetare och reste bort en längre tid. 10 När tiden var inne skickade han en tjänare till vingårdsarbetarna för att de skulle ge honom hans del av vingårdens avkastning. Men vingårdsarbetarna slog honom och skickade i väg honom tomhänt. 11 Då sände han en annan tjänare. Också honom slog de och hånade och skickade i väg tomhänt. 12 Därefter sände han en tredje tjänare. Men även honom slog de blodig och jagade bort. 13 Då sade vingårdens herre: Vad skall jag göra? Jo, jag vill sända min älskade son. Honom skall de väl ha respekt för. 14 Men när vingårdsarbetarna fick se honom, överlade de med varandra och sade: Här har vi arvtagaren! Låt oss döda honom, så får vi arvet. 15 Och de kastade ut honom ur vingården och dödade honom.
Vad skall nu vingårdens herre göra med dem? 16 Jo, han skall komma och döda dessa vingårdsarbetare och lämna vingården åt andra." När de hörde detta, sade de: "Det får aldrig hända!" 17 Men han såg på dem och frågade: "Vad menas då med detta ord i Skriften: Den sten som byggnadsarbetarna kastade bort har blivit en hörnsten. [b] 18 Var och en som faller på den stenen skall krossas, och den som stenen faller på skall smulas sönder." 19 De skriftlärda och översteprästerna ville nu gripa honom på en gång, men de vågade inte för folket. De förstod att det var om dem han hade talat i denna liknelse.
Skatt till kejsaren
20 De höll Jesus under uppsikt och skickade ut några för att vakta på honom. Dessa skulle låtsas vara ärliga och söka få fast honom för något som han sade, så att man kunde utlämna honom åt överheten, åt landshövdingen. 21 De frågade honom: "Mästare, vi vet att du talar och undervisar rätt och inte anpassar dig efter människor utan verkligen förkunnar Guds väg.[c] 22 Är det rätt att vi betalar skatt till kejsaren eller inte?" 23 Men han genomskådade deras list och sade till dem: 24 "Visa mig ett mynt.[d] Vems bild och inskrift har det?" De svarade: "Kejsarens". 25 Han sade till dem: "Ge då kejsaren det som tillhör kejsaren, och Gud det som tillhör Gud." 26 Och de kunde inte få fast honom för något som han sade inför folket. De förundrade sig över hans svar och hade inget att säga.
Frågan om uppståndelsen
27 Några sadduceer[e] - dessa som förnekar att det finns någon uppståndelse - kom fram och ställde en fråga till Jesus: 28 "Mästare, Mose har gett oss den föreskriften att om någon har en gift bror som dör barnlös, så skall han gifta sig med änkan och skaffa barn åt sin bror. 29 Nu fanns där sju bröder. Den förste tog sig hustru och dog barnlös. 30 Den andre 31 och den tredje gifte sig med henne, och så gjorde alla sju. De dog och lämnade inga barn efter sig. 32 Till slut dog också kvinnan. 33 Vem skall hon bli hustru till vid uppståndelsen? Alla sju var ju gifta med henne."
34 Jesus svarade dem: "De som lever i den här världen gifter sig och blir bortgifta. 35 Men de som anses värdiga att vinna den andra världen och uppståndelsen från de döda, de varken gifter sig eller blir bortgifta. 36 Inte heller kan de dö längre, ty som uppståndelsens barn är de lika änglarna och är Guds barn. 37 Men att de döda uppstår, det har också Mose visat på stället om törnbusken, när han kallar Herren Abrahams Gud och Isaks Gud och Jakobs Gud. [f] 38 Han är inte en Gud för döda utan för levande, ty för honom lever alla." 39 Då sade några skriftlärda: "Mästare, du har rätt i vad du säger." 40 Och de vågade inte mer ställa någon fråga till honom.
Vem Messias är
41 Jesus sade till dem: "Hur kan man säga att Messias är Davids son? 42 David säger ju själv i Psaltaren: Herren sade till min Herre:[g] Sätt dig på min högra sida,[h] 43 tills jag har lagt dina fiender som en fotpall under dina fötter.[i] 44 David kallar honom alltså Herre. Hur kan han då vara hans son?"
Jesus varnar för de skriftlärda
45 Medan allt folket hörde på, sade Jesus till sina lärjungar: 46 "Akta er för de skriftlärda, som njuter av att gå omkring i långa mantlar och älskar att bli hälsade på torgen och att sitta på de främsta platserna i synagogorna och ha hedersplatserna vid festmåltiderna. 47 De äter änkorna ur husen och ursäktar sig med sina långa böner. De skall få en så mycket strängare dom."

20 1-2 One day he was teaching the people in the Temple, proclaiming the Message. The high priests, religion scholars, and leaders confronted him and demanded, “Show us your credentials. Who authorized you to speak and act like this?”
3-4 Jesus answered, “First, let me ask you a question: About the baptism of John—who authorized it, heaven or humans?”
5-7 They were on the spot, and knew it. They pulled back into a huddle and whispered, “If we say ‘heaven,’ he’ll ask us why we didn’t believe him; if we say ‘humans,’ the people will tear us limb from limb, convinced as they are that John was God’s prophet.” They agreed to concede that round to Jesus and said they didn’t know.
8 Jesus said, “Then neither will I answer your question.”
The Story of Corrupt Farmhands
9-12 Jesus told another story to the people: “A man planted a vineyard. He handed it over to farmhands and went off on a trip. He was gone a long time. In time he sent a servant back to the farmhands to collect the profits, but they beat him up and sent him off empty-handed. He decided to try again and sent another servant. That one they beat black-and-blue, and sent him off empty-handed. He tried a third time. They worked that servant over from head to foot and dumped him in the street.
13 “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘I know what I’ll do: I’ll send my beloved son. They’re bound to respect my son.’
14-15 “But when the farmhands saw him coming, they quickly put their heads together. ‘This is our chance—this is the heir! Let’s kill him and have it all to ourselves.’ They killed him and threw him over the fence.
15-16 “What do you think the owner of the vineyard will do? Right. He’ll come and get rid of everyone. Then he’ll assign the care of the vineyard to others.”
Those who were listening said, “Oh, no! He’d never do that!”
17-18 But Jesus didn’t back down. “Why, then, do you think this was written:
That stone the masons threw out—
It’s now the cornerstone!?
“Anyone falling over that stone will break every bone in his body; if the stone falls on anyone, he’ll be smashed to smithereens.”
19 The religion scholars and high priests wanted to lynch him on the spot, but they were intimidated by public opinion. They knew the story was about them.
Paying Taxes
20-22 Watching for a chance to get him, they sent spies who posed as honest inquirers, hoping to trick him into saying something that would get him in trouble with the law. So they asked him, “Teacher, we know that you’re honest and straightforward when you teach, that you don’t pander to anyone but teach the way of God accurately. Tell us: Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
23-24 He knew they were laying for him and said, “Show me a coin. Now, this engraving, who does it look like and what does it say?”
25 “Caesar,” they said.
Jesus said, “Then give Caesar what is his and give God what is his.”
26 Try as they might, they couldn’t trap him into saying anything incriminating. His answer caught them off guard and left them speechless.
All Intimacies Will Be with God
27-33 Some Sadducees came up. This is the Jewish party that denies any possibility of resurrection. They asked, “Teacher, Moses wrote us that if a man dies and leaves a wife but no child, his brother is obligated to marry her and give her children. Well, there once were seven brothers. The first took a wife. He died childless. The second married her and died, then the third, and eventually all seven had their turn, but no child. After all that, the wife died. That wife, now—in the resurrection whose wife is she? All seven married her.”
34-38 Jesus said, “Marriage is a major preoccupation here, but not there. Those who are included in the resurrection of the dead will no longer be concerned with marriage nor, of course, with death. They will have better things to think about, if you can believe it. All ecstasies and intimacies then will be with God. Even Moses exclaimed about resurrection at the burning bush, saying, ‘God: God of Abraham, God of Isaac, God of Jacob!’ God isn’t the God of dead men, but of the living. To him all are alive.”
39-40 Some of the religion scholars said, “Teacher, that’s a great answer!” For a while, anyway, no one dared put questions to him.

41-44 Then he put a question to them: “How is it that they say that the Messiah is David’s son? In the Book of Psalms, David clearly says,
God said to my Master,
“Sit here at my right hand
until I put your enemies under your feet.”
“David here designates the Messiah as ‘my Master’—so how can the Messiah also be his ‘son’?”
45-47 With everybody listening, Jesus spoke to his disciples. “Watch out for the religion scholars. They love to walk around in academic gowns, preen in the radiance of public flattery, bask in prominent positions, sit at the head table at every church function. And all the time they are exploiting the weak and helpless. The longer their prayers, the worse they get. But they’ll pay for it in the end.”

The Authority of Jesus Questioned(A)
20 One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts(B) and proclaiming the good news,(C) the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to him. 2 “Tell us by what authority you are doing these things,” they said. “Who gave you this authority?”(D)
3 He replied, “I will also ask you a question. Tell me: 4 John’s baptism(E)—was it from heaven, or of human origin?”
5 They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’ 6 But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ all the people(F) will stone us, because they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”(G)
7 So they answered, “We don’t know where it was from.”
8 Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”
The Parable of the Tenants(H)
9 He went on to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard,(I) rented it to some farmers and went away for a long time.(J) 10 At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated shamefully and sent away empty-handed. 12 He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out.
13 “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love;(K) perhaps they will respect him.’
14 “But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. ‘This is the heir,’ they said. ‘Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 15 So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.
“What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and kill those tenants(L) and give the vineyard to others.”
When the people heard this, they said, “God forbid!”
17 Jesus looked directly at them and asked, “Then what is the meaning of that which is written:
18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”(N)
19 The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him(O) immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.(P)
Paying Taxes to Caesar(Q)
20 Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said,(R) so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.(S) 21 So the spies questioned him: “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.(T) 22 Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
23 He saw through their duplicity and said to them, 24 “Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?”
“Caesar’s,” they replied.
25 He said to them, “Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s,(U) and to God what is God’s.”
26 They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent.
The Resurrection and Marriage(V)
27 Some of the Sadducees,(W) who say there is no resurrection,(X) came to Jesus with a question. 28 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.(Y) 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless. 30 The second 31 and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children. 32 Finally, the woman died too. 33 Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”
34 Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come(Z) and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children,(AA) since they are children of the resurrection. 37 But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’[b](AB) 38 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”
39 Some of the teachers of the law responded, “Well said, teacher!” 40 And no one dared to ask him any more questions.(AC)
Whose Son Is the Messiah?(AD)
41 Then Jesus said to them, “Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David?(AE) 42 David himself declares in the Book of Psalms:
“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
43 until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.”’[c](AF)
44 David calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”
Warning Against the Teachers of the Law
45 While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, 46 “Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.(AG) 47 They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”

13 Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him.
14 But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.
15 So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?
16 He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.
17 And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?
18 Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
19 And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.
20 And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.
21 And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly:
22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no?
23 But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me?
24 Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Caesar's.
25 And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's.
26 And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.
27 Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him,
28 Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
29 There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.
30 And the second took her to wife, and he died childless.
31 And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died.
32 Last of all the woman died also.
33 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife.
34 And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:
35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:
36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.
37 Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
38 For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.
39 Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said.
40 And after that they durst not ask him any question at all.
41 And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David's son?
42 And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
43 Till I make thine enemies thy footstool.
44 David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son?
45 Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples,
46 Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts;
47 Which devour widows' houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.
