Jesus wird geboren
2 In dieser Zeit befahl Kaiser Augustus, alle Bewohner des Römischen Reiches in Steuerlisten einzutragen.
2 Eine solche Volkszählung hatte es noch nie gegeben. Sie wurde durchgeführt, als Quirinius Statthalter in Syrien war. 3 Jeder musste in seine Heimatstadt gehen, um sich dort eintragen zu lassen.
4 So reiste Josef von Nazareth in Galiläa nach Bethlehem in Judäa, der Geburtsstadt von König David. Denn er war ein Nachkomme von David und stammte aus Bethlehem. 5 Josef musste sich dort einschreiben lassen, zusammen mit seiner Verlobten Maria, die ein Kind erwartete.
6 In Bethlehem kam für Maria die Stunde der Geburt. 7 Sie brachte ihr erstes Kind, einen Sohn, zur Welt. Sie wickelte ihn in Windeln und legte ihn in eine Futterkrippe im Stall, denn im Gasthaus hatten sie keinen Platz bekommen.
Die Hirten auf dem Feld
8 In dieser Nacht bewachten draußen auf den Feldern vor Bethlehem einige Hirten ihre Herden. 9 Plötzlich trat ein Engel des Herrn zu ihnen, und die Herrlichkeit des Herrn umstrahlte sie. Die Hirten erschraken sehr, 10 aber der Engel sagte: »Fürchtet euch nicht! Ich verkünde euch eine Botschaft, die das ganze Volk mit großer Freude erfüllen wird: 11 Heute ist für euch in der Stadt, in der schon David geboren wurde, der versprochene Retter zur Welt gekommen. Es ist Christus, der Herr. 12 Und daran werdet ihr ihn erkennen: Das Kind liegt, in Windeln gewickelt, in einer Futterkrippe!«
13 Auf einmal waren sie von unzähligen Engeln umgeben, die Gott lobten:
14 »Ehre sei Gott im Himmel!
Denn er bringt der Welt Frieden und wendet sich den Menschen in Liebe zu[a].«
15 Nachdem die Engel in den Himmel zurückgekehrt waren, beschlossen die Hirten: »Kommt, wir gehen nach Bethlehem. Wir wollen sehen, was dort geschehen ist und was der Herr uns verkünden ließ.«
16 Sie machten sich sofort auf den Weg und fanden Maria und Josef und das Kind, das in der Futterkrippe lag. 17 Als sie es sahen, erzählten die Hirten, was ihnen der Engel über das Kind gesagt hatte. 18 Und alle, die ihren Bericht hörten, waren darüber sehr erstaunt.
19 Maria aber merkte sich jedes Wort und dachte immer wieder darüber nach.
20 Schließlich kehrten die Hirten zu ihren Herden zurück. Sie lobten Gott und dankten ihm für das, was sie gehört und gesehen hatten. Es war alles so gewesen, wie der Engel es ihnen gesagt hatte.
Jesus wird als Retter erkannt
21 Am achten Tag nach der Geburt wurde das Kind beschnitten, wie es üblich war. Es erhielt den Namen Jesus; den hatte der Engel genannt, noch ehe Maria das Kind empfangen hatte.
22 Als die Zeit vorüber war, in der laut dem Gesetz von Mose eine Frau nach der Geburt als unrein gilt,[b] brachten Josef und Maria das Kind nach Jerusalem, um es dem Herrn zu weihen. 23 Denn im Gesetz des Herrn heißt es: »Jeder älteste Sohn und jedes erstgeborene männliche Tier sollen dem Herrn gehören.«[c] 24 Gleichzeitig brachten sie auch das vorgeschriebene Reinigungsopfer für Maria dar: Man musste zwei Turteltauben oder zwei junge Tauben opfern.[d]
25 Damals wohnte in Jerusalem ein Mann namens Simeon. Er lebte nach Gottes Willen, hatte Ehrfurcht vor ihm und wartete voller Sehnsucht auf den Retter Israels[e]. Der Heilige Geist ruhte auf Simeon, 26 und durch ihn wusste er, dass er nicht sterben würde, bevor er den Christus, den vom Herrn gesandten Retter, gesehen hätte. 27 Vom Heiligen Geist geführt, war er an diesem Tag in den Tempel gegangen. Als Maria und Josef ihr Kind hereinbrachten, um es – wie im Gesetz vorgeschrieben – Gott zu weihen, 28 nahm Simeon Jesus in seine Arme und lobte Gott:
29 »Herr, du hast dein Wort gehalten,
jetzt kann ich, dein Diener, in Frieden sterben.
30 Ich habe es mit eigenen Augen gesehen:
Du hast uns Rettung gebracht,
31 die ganze Welt wird es erfahren.
32 Dein Licht erleuchtet alle Völker,
und deinem Volk Israel bringt es Größe und Herrlichkeit.«
33 Maria und Josef wunderten sich über seine Worte. 34 Simeon segnete sie und sagte dann zu Maria: »Gott hat dieses Kind dazu bestimmt, die Israeliten vor die Entscheidung zu stellen: ob sie zu Fall kommen oder gerettet werden. Durch ihn setzt Gott ein Zeichen, gegen das sich viele auflehnen werden. 35 So zeigt er, was in ihrem Innern vor sich geht. Der Schmerz darüber wird dir wie ein Schwert durchs Herz dringen.«
36 An diesem Tag hielt sich auch die alte Prophetin Hanna im Tempel auf, eine Tochter von Phanuël aus dem Stamm Asser. Sie war nur sieben Jahre verheiratet gewesen, 37 seit langer Zeit Witwe und nun eine alte Frau von 84 Jahren. Hanna brachte ihre ganze Zeit im Tempel zu. Um Gott zu dienen, betete und fastete sie Tag und Nacht.
38 Während Simeon noch mit Maria und Josef sprach, trat sie hinzu und begann ebenfalls, Gott zu loben. Allen, die auf die Rettung Jerusalems warteten, erzählte sie von diesem Kind.
39 Nachdem Josef und Maria alle Vorschriften erfüllt hatten, die das Gesetz des Herrn fordert, kehrten sie nach Nazareth in Galiläa zurück. 40 Das Kind wuchs gesund heran, erfüllt mit göttlicher Weisheit, und Gottes Segen ruhte sichtbar auf ihm.
Der zwölfjährige Jesus im Tempel
41 Jahr für Jahr besuchten Josef und Maria das Passahfest in Jerusalem. 42 Als Jesus zwölf Jahre alt war, gingen sie wie gewohnt dorthin und nahmen ihn mit. 43 Nach den Festtagen machten sich die Eltern wieder auf den Heimweg. Jesus aber blieb in Jerusalem, ohne dass sie es bemerkten. 44 Denn sie dachten, er sei mit anderen Reisenden unterwegs. Nachdem sie einen Tagesmarsch weit gekommen waren, begannen sie, bei ihren Verwandten und Freunden nach ihm zu suchen. 45 Als sie ihn aber dort nicht fanden, kehrten sie besorgt um und suchten ihn überall in Jerusalem.
46 Endlich, nach drei Tagen, entdeckten sie Jesus im Tempel. Er saß mitten unter den Gesetzeslehrern, hörte ihnen aufmerksam zu und stellte Fragen.
47 Alle wunderten sich über sein Verständnis und seine Antworten.
48 Die Eltern waren fassungslos, als sie ihn dort fanden. »Kind«, fragte ihn Maria, »wie konntest du uns nur so etwas antun? Dein Vater und ich haben dich überall verzweifelt gesucht!«
49 »Warum habt ihr mich gesucht?«, erwiderte Jesus. »Habt ihr denn nicht gewusst, dass ich im Haus meines Vaters sein muss[f]?« 50 Doch sie begriffen nicht, was er damit meinte.
51 Dann kehrte Jesus mit seinen Eltern nach Nazareth zurück, und er war ihnen gehorsam. Seine Mutter aber dachte immer wieder über das nach, was geschehen war.
52 So wuchs Jesus heran, und seine Weisheit nahm zu. Je älter er wurde, desto mehr Ansehen fand er bei Gott und bei den Menschen.

2 Ora, in quei giorni fu emanato un decreto da parte di Cesare Augusto che si compisse il censimento di tutto l'impero.
2 Questo censimento fu il primo ad essere fatto quando Quirinio era governatore della Siria.
3 E tutti andavano a farsi registrare ciascuno nella sua città.
4 Or anche Giuseppe uscí dalla città di Nazaret della Galilea, per recarsi in Giudea nella città di Davide, chiamata Betlemme, perché egli era della casa e della famiglia di Davide,
5 per farsi registrare con Maria, sua moglie, che aveva sposato e che era incinta.
6 Cosí mentre erano là, giunse per lei il tempo del parto.
7 Ed ella diede alla luce il suo figlio primogenito, e lo fasciò e lo pose a giacere in una mangiatoia, perché non c'era posto per loro nell'albergo.
8 Ora in quella stessa regione c'erano dei pastori che dimoravano all'aperto nei campi, e di notte facevano la guardia al loro gregge.
9 Ed ecco, un angelo del Signore si presentò loro e la gloria del Signore risplendette intorno a loro, ed essi furono presi da grande paura.
10 Ma l'angelo disse loro: «Non temete, perché vi annunzio una grande gioia che tutto il popolo avrà;
11 poiché oggi nella città di Davide è nato per voi un Salvatore, che è Cristo, il Signore
12 E questo vi servirà di segno: Voi troverete un bambino fasciato, coricato in una mangiatoia».
13 E ad un tratto si uní all'angelo una moltitudine dell'esercito celeste che lodava Dio, dicendo:
14 «Gloria a Dio nei luoghi altissimi, e pace in terra agli uomini, su cui si posa il suo favore».
15 E avvenne che, quando gli angeli si allontanarono da loro per ritornare in cielo, i pastori dissero tra loro: «Andiamo fino a Betlemme, per vedere ciò che è avvenuto e che il Signore ci ha fatto conoscere».
16 Andarono quindi in fretta e trovarono Maria, Giuseppe e il bambino, che giaceva in una mangiatoia.
17 Dopo averlo visto, divulgarono quanto era stato loro detto a proposito di quel bambino.
18 E tutti coloro che li udirono si meravigliarono delle cose raccontate loro dai pastori.
19 Maria custodiva tutte queste parole, meditandole in cuor.
20 E i pastori se ne ritornarono, glorificando e lodando Dio per tutte le cose che avevano udito e visto, come era stato loro detto.
21 E quando furono trascorsi gli otto giorni dopo i quali egli doveva essere circonciso, gli fu posto nome Gesú, il nome dato dall'angelo prima che fosse concepito nel grembo.
22 Quando poi furono compiuti i giorni della purificazione di lei secondo la legge di Mosé, portarono il bambino a Gerusalemme per presentarlo al Signore
23 come è scritto nella legge del Signore: «Ogni maschio primogenito sarà chiamato santo al Signore»,
24 e per offrire in sacrificio, come è detto nella legge del Signore, un paio di tortore o due giovani colombi.
25 Or ecco, vi era a Gerusalemme un uomo chiamato Simeone; quest'uomo era giusto e pio e aspettava la consolazione d'Israele; e lo Spirito Santo era su di lui.
26 E gli era stato divinamente rivelato dallo Spirito Santo, che non sarebbe morto prima di aver visto il Cristo del Signore.
27 Egli dunque, mosso dallo Spirito, venne nel tempio, e, come i genitori vi portavano il bambino Gesú, per fare a suo riguardo quanto prescriveva la legge,
28 egli lo prese tra le braccia e benedisse Dio, dicendo:
29 «Ora, Signore, lascia che il tuo servo muoia in pace secondo la tua parola,
30 perché i miei occhi hanno visto la tua salvezza,
31 che tu hai preparato davanti a tutti i popoli;
32 luce per illuminare le genti e gloria del tuo popolo Israele».
33 E Giuseppe e la madre del bambino si meravigliavano delle cose che si dicevano di lui.
34 Poi Simeone li benedisse e disse a Maria sua madre: «Ecco, costui è posto per la caduta e per l'innalzamento di molti in Israele e per essere segno di contraddizione,
35 e a te stessa una spada trafiggerà l'anima, affinché siano svelati i pensieri di molti cuori».
36 Vi era anche Anna, una profetessa, figlia di Fanuel, della tribú di Aser, la quale era molto avanzata in età, avendo vissuto dopo la sua verginità sette anni con il marito.
37 Ella era vedova e, sebbene avesse ormai ottantaquattro anni, non si allontanava mai dal tempio, servendo Dio notte e giorno con digiuni e preghiere.
38 Sopraggiunta ella pure in quel momento, lodava il Signore e parlava di quel bambino a tutti coloro che aspettavano la redenzione in Gerusalemme.
39 Ora, quando ebbero compiuto tutto quello che riguardava l'osservanza della legge del Signore, ritornarono in Galilea nella loro città di Nazaret.
40 Intanto il bambino cresceva e si fortificava nello spirito, essendo ripieno di sapienza; e la grazia di Dio era su di lui.
41 Or i suoi genitori si recavano ogni anno a Gerusalemme per la festa di Pasqua.
42 E, quando egli compí dodici anni, essi salirono a Gerusalemme, secondo l'usanza della festa.
43 Terminati quei giorni, mentre essi ritornavano, il fanciullo Gesú rimase in Gerusalemme; ma Giuseppe e sua madre non lo sapevano.
44 Supponendo che egli fosse nella comitiva, essi fecero una giornata di cammino, poi si misero a cercarlo fra i parenti e i conoscenti;
45 e, non avendolo trovato, tornarono a Gerusalemme in cerca di lui.
46 E avvenne che, tre giorni dopo, lo trovarono nel tempio, seduto in mezzo ai dottori, intento ad ascoltarli e a far loro domande.
47 E tutti quelli che l'udivano, stupivano della sua intelligenza e delle sue risposte.
48 E, quando essi lo videro, rimasero stupiti, e sua madre gli disse: «Figlio, perché ci hai fatto questo? Ecco, tuo padre ed io, angosciati, ti cercavamo!».
49 Ma egli disse loro: «Perché mi cercavate? Non sapevate che io devo occuparmi delle cose del Padre mio?».
50 Ma essi non compresero le parole che aveva detto loro.
51 Ed egli scese con loro, tornò a Nazaret e stava loro sottomesso. E sua madre serbava tutte queste parole nel suo cuore.
52 E Gesú cresceva in sapienza, in statura e in grazia davanti a Dio e agli uomini.

15 Appena gli angeli si furono allontanati per tornare al cielo, i pastori dicevano fra loro: «Andiamo fino a Betlemme, vediamo questo avvenimento che il Signore ci ha fatto conoscere». 16 Andarono dunque senz'indugio e trovarono Maria e Giuseppe e il bambino, che giaceva nella mangiatoia. 17 E dopo averlo visto, riferirono ciò che del bambino era stato detto loro. 18 Tutti quelli che udirono, si stupirono delle cose che i pastori dicevano. 19 Maria, da parte sua, serbava tutte queste cose meditandole nel suo cuore.
20 I pastori poi se ne tornarono, glorificando e lodando Dio per tutto quello che avevano udito e visto, com'era stato detto loro.
Circoncisione di Gesù
21 Quando furon passati gli otto giorni prescritti per la circoncisione, gli fu messo nome Gesù, come era stato chiamato dall'angelo prima di essere concepito nel grembo della madre.
Presentazione di Gesù al tempio
22 Quando venne il tempo della loro purificazione secondo la Legge di Mosè, portarono il bambino a Gerusalemme per offrirlo al Signore, 23 come è scritto nella Legge del Signore: ogni maschio primogenito sarà sacro al Signore; 24 e per offrire in sacrificio una coppia di tortore o di giovani colombi, come prescrive la Legge del Signore.
25 Ora a Gerusalemme c'era un uomo di nome Simeone, uomo giusto e timorato di Dio, che aspettava il conforto d'Israele; 26 lo Spirito Santo che era sopra di lui, gli aveva preannunziato che non avrebbe visto la morte senza prima aver veduto il Messia del Signore. 27 Mosso dunque dallo Spirito, si recò al tempio; e mentre i genitori vi portavano il bambino Gesù per adempiere la Legge, 28 lo prese tra le braccia e benedisse Dio:

Profezia di Simeone
33 Il padre e la madre di Gesù si stupivano delle cose che si dicevano di lui. 34 Simeone li benedisse e parlò a Maria, sua madre: «Egli è qui per la rovina e la risurrezione di molti in Israele, segno di contraddizione 35 perché siano svelati i pensieri di molti cuori. E anche a te una spada trafiggerà l'anima».
Profezia di Anna
36 C'era anche una profetessa, Anna, figlia di Fanuèle, della tribù di Aser. Era molto avanzata in età, aveva vissuto col marito sette anni dal tempo in cui era ragazza, 37 era poi rimasta vedova e ora aveva ottantaquattro anni. Non si allontanava mai dal tempio, servendo Dio notte e giorno con digiuni e preghiere. 38 Sopraggiunta in quel momento, si mise anche lei a lodare Dio e parlava del bambino a quanti aspettavano la redenzione di Gerusalemme.
Vita nascosta di Gesù a Nazaret
39 Quando ebbero tutto compiuto secondo la legge del Signore, fecero ritorno in Galilea, alla loro città di Nazaret. 40 Il bambino cresceva e si fortificava, pieno di sapienza, e la grazia di Dio era sopra di lui.
Gesù tra i dottori
41 I suoi genitori si recavano tutti gli anni a Gerusalemme per la festa di Pasqua. 42 Quando egli ebbe dodici anni, vi salirono di nuovo secondo l'usanza; 43 ma trascorsi i giorni della festa, mentre riprendevano la via del ritorno, il fanciullo Gesù rimase a Gerusalemme, senza che i genitori se ne accorgessero. 44 Credendolo nella carovana, fecero una giornata di viaggio, e poi si misero a cercarlo tra i parenti e i conoscenti; 45 non avendolo trovato, tornarono in cerca di lui a Gerusalemme. 46 Dopo tre giorni lo trovarono nel tempio, seduto in mezzo ai dottori, mentre li ascoltava e li interrogava. 47 E tutti quelli che l'udivano erano pieni di stupore per la sua intelligenza e le sue risposte. 48 Al vederlo restarono stupiti e sua madre gli disse: «Figlio, perché ci hai fatto così? Ancora la vita nascosta a Nazaret
51 Partì dunque con loro e tornò a Nazaret e stava loro sottomesso. Sua madre serbava tutte queste cose nel suo cuore. 52 E Gesù cresceva in sapienza, età e grazia davanti a Dio e agli uomini.

The Birth of Jesus
(Matthew 1.18-25)
2 About that time Emperor Augustus gave orders for the names of all the people to be listed in record books.[a] 2 These first records were made when Quirinius was governor of Syria.[b]
3 Everyone had to go to their own hometown to be listed. 4 So Joseph had to leave Nazareth in Galilee and go to Bethlehem in Judea. Long ago Bethlehem had been King David's hometown, and Joseph went there because he was from David's family.
5 Mary was engaged to Joseph and traveled with him to Bethlehem. She was soon going to have a baby, 6 and while they were there, 7 she gave birth to her first-born[c] son. She dressed him in baby clothes[d] and laid him on a bed of hay, because there was no room for them in the inn.
The Shepherds
8 That night in the fields near Bethlehem some shepherds were guarding their sheep. 9 (A) All at once an angel came down to them from the Lord, and the brightness of the Lord's glory flashed around them. The shepherds were frightened. 10 But the angel said, “Don't be afraid! I have good news for you, which will make everyone happy. 11 This very day in King David's hometown a Savior was born for you. He is Christ the Lord. 12 You will know who he is, because you will find him dressed in baby clothes and lying on a bed of hay.”
13 Suddenly many other angels came down from heaven and joined in praising God. They said:
14 “Praise God in heaven!
Peace on earth to everyone
who pleases God.”
15 After the angels had left and gone back to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let's go to Bethlehem and see what the Lord has told us about.” 16 They hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and they saw the baby lying on a bed of hay.
17 When the shepherds saw Jesus, they told his parents what the angel had said about him. 18 Everyone listened and was surprised. 19 But Mary kept thinking about all this and wondering what it meant.
20 As the shepherds returned to their sheep, they were praising God and saying wonderful things about him. Everything they had seen and heard was just as the angel had said.
21 (B) Eight days later Jesus' parents did for him what the Law of Moses commands.[e] And they named him Jesus, just as the angel had told Mary when he promised she would have a baby.
Simeon Praises the Lord
22 (C) The time came for Mary and Joseph to do what the Law of Moses says a mother is supposed to do after her baby is born.[f]
They took Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem and presented him to the Lord, 23 (D) just as the Law of the Lord says, “Each first-born[g] baby boy belongs to the Lord.” 24 The Law of the Lord also says parents have to offer a sacrifice, giving at least a pair of doves or two young pigeons. So that is what Mary and Joseph did.
25 At this time a man named Simeon was living in Jerusalem. Simeon was a good man. He loved God and was waiting for him to save the people of Israel. God's Spirit came to him 26 and told him that he would not die until he had seen Christ the Lord.
27 When Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple to do what the Law of Moses says should be done for a new baby, the Spirit told Simeon to go into the temple. 28 Simeon took the baby Jesus in his arms and praised God,
29 “Lord, I am your servant,
and now I can die in peace,
because you have kept
your promise to me.
30 With my own eyes I have seen
what you have done
to save your people,
31 and foreign nations
will also see this.
32 (E) Your mighty power is a light
for all nations,
and it will bring honor
to your people Israel.”
33 Jesus' parents were surprised at what Simeon had said. 34 Then he blessed them and told Mary, “This child of yours will cause many people in Israel to fall and others to stand. The child will be like a warning sign. Many people will reject him, 35 and you, Mary, will suffer as though you had been stabbed by a dagger. But all this will show what people are really thinking.”
Anna Speaks about the Child Jesus
36 (F) The prophet Anna was also there in the temple. She was the daughter of Phanuel from the tribe of Asher, and she was very old. In her youth she had been married for seven years, but her husband died. 37 And now she was 84 years old.[h] Night and day she served God in the temple by praying and often going without eating.[i]
38 At this time Anna came in and praised God. She spoke about the child Jesus to everyone who hoped for Jerusalem to be set free.
The Return to Nazareth
39 (G) After Joseph and Mary had done everything that the Law of the Lord commands, they returned home to Nazareth in Galilee. 40 The child Jesus grew. He became strong and wise, and God blessed him.
The Boy Jesus in the Temple
41 (H) Every year Jesus' parents went to Jerusalem for Passover. 42 And when Jesus was twelve years old, they all went there as usual for the celebration. 43 After Passover his parents left, but they did not know that Jesus had stayed on in the city. 44 They thought he was traveling with some other people, and they went a whole day before they started looking for him. 45 When they could not find him with their relatives and friends, they went back to Jerusalem and started looking for him there.
46 Three days later they found Jesus sitting in the temple, listening to the teachers and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was surprised at how much he knew and at the answers he gave.
48 When his parents found him, they were amazed. His mother said, “Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been very worried, and we have been searching for you!”
49 Jesus answered, “Why did you have to look for me? Didn't you know that I would be in my Father's house?”[j] 50 But they did not understand what he meant.
51 Jesus went back to Nazareth with his parents and obeyed them. His mother kept on thinking about all that had happened.
52 (I) Jesus became wise, and he grew strong. God was pleased with him and so were the people.

- 2.2 Quirinius was governor of Syria: It is known that Quirinius made a record of the people in a.d. 6 or 7. But the exact date of the record taking that Luke mentions is not known.
- 2.7 first-born: The Jewish people said that the first-born son in each of their families belonged to the Lord.
- 2.7 dressed him in baby clothes: The Greek text has “wrapped him in wide strips of cloth,” which was how young babies were dressed.
- 2.21 what the Law of Moses commands: See the note at 1.59.
- 2.22 after her baby is born: After a Jewish mother gave birth to a son, she was considered “unclean” and had to stay home until he was circumcised (see the note at 1.59). Then she had to stay home for another 33 days, before offering a sacrifice to the Lord.

- 2.37 And now she was 84 years old: Or “And now she had been a widow for 84 years.”
- 2.37 without eating: The Jewish people sometimes went without eating (also called “fasting”) to show their love for God or to show sorrow for their sins.
