Die Geburt Jesu Christi in Bethlehem
2 Es begab sich aber in jenen Tagen, daß ein Befehl ausging vom Kaiser Augustus, daß alle Welt sich sollte schätzen lassen. 2 Diese Schatzung war die erste und geschah, als Kyrenius Landpfleger in Syrien war. 3 Und es zogen alle aus, um sich schätzen zu lassen, ein jeder in seine Stadt.
4 Es ging aber auch Joseph von Galiläa, aus der Stadt Nazareth, hinauf nach Judäa in die Stadt Davids, welche Bethlehem heißt, weil er aus dem Hause und Geschlechte Davids war, 5 um sich schätzen[a] zu lassen mit Maria, seiner Verlobten, die schwanger war.
6 Es begab sich aber, während sie daselbst waren, da erfüllten sich die Tage, daß sie gebären sollte. 7 Und sie gebar ihren Sohn, den Erstgeborenen, und wickelte ihn in Windeln und legte ihn in eine Krippe, weil für sie kein Raum war in der Herberge.
Die Hirten und die Engel
8 Und es waren Hirten in derselben Gegend auf dem Felde, die bewachten des Nachts ihre Herde. 9 Und siehe, ein Engel des Herrn trat zu ihnen, und die Klarheit des Herrn umleuchtete sie; und sie fürchteten sich sehr. 10 Und der Engel sprach zu ihnen: Fürchtet euch nicht! Denn siehe, ich verkündige euch große Freude, die dem ganzen Volk widerfahren soll. 11 Denn euch ist heute ein Retter[b] geboren, welcher ist Christus, der Herr, in der Stadt Davids. 12 Und das sei für euch das Zeichen: Ihr werdet ein Kindlein finden, in Windeln gewickelt und in einer Krippe liegend.
13 Und plötzlich war bei dem Engel die Menge der himmlischen Heerscharen, die lobten Gott und sprachen:
14 Ehre sei Gott in der Höhe
und Friede auf Erden,
an den Menschen ein Wohlgefallen[c]!
15 Und es begab sich, als die Engel von ihnen gen Himmel fuhren, sprachen die Hirten zueinander: Laßt uns doch bis nach Bethlehem gehen und die Sache sehen, die da geschehen ist, die der Herr uns kundgetan hat! 16 Und sie gingen eilends und fanden Maria und Joseph, dazu das Kindlein in der Krippe liegend. 17 Nachdem sie es aber gesehen hatten, machten sie das Wort kund, das ihnen von diesem Kinde gesagt worden war. 18 Und alle, die es hörten, verwunderten sich über das, was ihnen von den Hirten gesagt wurde. 19 Maria aber behielt alle diese Worte und überlegte sie in ihrem Herzen. 20 Und die Hirten kehrten wieder um, priesen und lobten Gott für alles, was sie gehört und gesehen hatten, so wie es ihnen gesagt worden war.
Jesus wird im Tempel zu Jerusalem dem Herrn dargestellt
21 Und als acht Tage vollendet waren, da man das Kind beschneiden mußte, wurde ihm der Name Jesus gegeben, den der Engel genannt hatte, ehe er im Mutterleibe empfangen worden war.
22 Und als die Tage ihrer Reinigung nach dem Gesetze Moses vollendet waren, brachten sie ihn nach Jerusalem, um ihn dem Herrn darzustellen, 23 wie im Gesetze des Herrn geschrieben steht: „Alle männliche Erstgeburt soll dem Herrn geheiligt heißen“, 24 und um ein Opfer darzubringen, wie im Gesetze des Herrn[d] geboten ist, ein Paar Turteltauben oder zwei junge Tauben.
Lobgesang Simeons. Die Prophetin Hanna
25 Und siehe, es war ein Mensch zu Jerusalem, namens Simeon; und dieser Mensch war gerecht und gottesfürchtig und wartete auf den Trost Israels; und heiliger Geist war auf ihm. 26 Und er hatte vom heiligen Geist die Zusage empfangen, daß er den Tod nicht sehen werde, bevor er den Gesalbten des Herrn gesehen. 27 Und er kam auf Antrieb des Geistes in den Tempel. Und als die Eltern das Kindlein Jesus hineinbrachten, um mit ihm zu verfahren nach der Sitte des Gesetzes, 28 da nahm er es auf seine Arme, lobte Gott und sprach:
29 Nun, Herr, entlässest du deinen Diener in Frieden nach deinem Wort!
30 Denn meine Augen haben dein Heil gesehen,
31 welches du angesichts aller Völker bereitet hast,
32 ein Licht zur Erleuchtung der Heiden und zur Verherrlichung deines Volkes Israel!
33 Und sein Vater und seine Mutter verwunderten sich über das, was von ihm gesagt wurde. 34 Und Simeon segnete sie und sprach zu Maria, seiner Mutter: Siehe, dieser ist gesetzt zum Fall und zum Auferstehen[e] vieler in Israel und zu einem Zeichen, dem widersprochen wird 35 und dir selbst wird ein Schwert durch die Seele dringen -, auf daß aus vielen Herzen die Gedanken offenbar werden.
36 Und es war eine Prophetin Hanna, eine Tochter Phanuels, aus dem Stamm Asser, die war hochbetagt, nachdem sie mit ihrem Manne sieben Jahre gelebt hatte nach ihrer Jungfrauschaft; 37 und sie war eine Witwe von vierundachtzig Jahren; die wich nicht vom Tempel, sondern diente Gott mit Fasten und Beten Tag und Nacht. 38 Auch diese trat zu derselben Stunde hinzu und pries Gott und redete von ihm zu allen, die auf Jerusalems Erlösung warteten.
Rückkehr nach Nazareth
39 Und nachdem sie alles vollbracht hatten nach dem Gesetze des Herrn, kehrten sie zurück nach Galiläa, in ihre Stadt Nazareth. 40 Das Kindlein aber wuchs und ward stark, erfüllt mit Weisheit, und Gottes Gnade war auf ihm.
Der zwölfjährige Jesus im Tempel
41 Und seine Eltern reisten jährlich am Passahfest nach Jerusalem. 42 Und als er zwölf Jahre alt war, gingen sie nach Gewohnheit des Festes hinauf. 43 Und als sie die Tage vollendet hatten und wieder heimkehrten, blieb der Knabe Jesus in Jerusalem; und seine Eltern wußten es nicht. 44 Da sie aber meinten, er wäre unter den Gefährten, zogen sie eine Tagereise weit und suchten ihn unter den Verwandten und Bekannten. 45 Und da sie ihn nicht fanden, kehrten sie wieder nach Jerusalem zurück und suchten ihn. 46 Und es begab sich, nach drei Tagen fanden sie ihn im Tempel sitzend mitten unter den Lehrern, wie er ihnen zuhörte und sie fragte.
47 Es erstaunten aber alle, die ihn hörten, über seinen Verstand und seine Antworten. 48 Und als sie ihn sahen, entsetzten sie sich; und seine Mutter sprach zu ihm: Kind, warum hast du uns das getan? Siehe, dein Vater und ich haben dich mit Schmerzen gesucht. 49 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Was habt ihr mich gesucht? Wußtet ihr nicht, daß ich sein muß in dem, was meines Vaters ist? 50 Und sie verstanden das Wort nicht, das er zu ihnen sagte. 51 Und er ging mit ihnen hinab und kam gen Nazareth und war ihnen untertan. Und seine Mutter behielt alle diese Worte in ihrem Herzen.
52 Und Jesus nahm zu an Weisheit, Alter und Gnade bei Gott und den Menschen.

The Birth of Jesus
2 In those days Caesar Augustus(A) issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.(B) 2 (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.)(C) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.
4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem(D) the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him(E) and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.
8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel(F) of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.(G) I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior(H) has been born to you; he is the Messiah,(I) the Lord.(J) 12 This will be a sign(K) to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace(L) to those on whom his favor rests.”
15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.(M) 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.(N) 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God(O) for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.
21 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child,(P) he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.(Q)
Jesus Presented in the Temple
22 When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses,(R) Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”[b]),(S) 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”[c](T)
25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout.(U) He was waiting for the consolation of Israel,(V) and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required,(W) 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,(X)
you may now dismiss[d] your servant in peace.(Y)
30 For my eyes have seen your salvation,(Z)
31 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.”(AA)
33 The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother:(AB) “This child is destined to cause the falling(AC) and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”
36 There was also a prophet,(AD) Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37 and then was a widow until she was eighty-four.[e](AE) She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.(AF) 38 Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.(AG)
39 When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.(AH) 40 And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.(AI)
The Boy Jesus at the Temple
41 Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover.(AJ) 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. 43 After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. 44 Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45 When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed(AK) at his understanding and his answers. 48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother(AL) said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father(AM) and I have been anxiously searching for you.”
49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”[f](AN) 50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them.(AO)
51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them(AP) and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.(AQ) 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.(AR)

6 Mientras estaban en Belén, a María le llegó la hora de tener 7 su primer hijo.[a] Como no encontraron ningún cuarto donde pasar la noche, los hospedaron en el lugar de la casa donde se cuidan los animales. Cuando el niño nació, María lo envolvió en pañales y lo acostó en un pesebre.[b]
8 Esa misma noche, unos pastores estaban cuidando sus ovejas cerca de Belén. 9 De pronto, un ángel de Dios se les apareció, y la gloria de Dios brilló alrededor de ellos. Los pastores se asustaron mucho, 10 pero el ángel les dijo: «No tengan miedo. Les traigo una buena noticia que los dejará muy contentos: 11 ¡Su Salvador acaba de nacer en Belén! ¡Es el Mesías, el Señor! 12 Lo reconocerán porque está durmiendo en un pesebre, envuelto en pañales.»
13 De pronto, muchos ángeles aparecieron en el cielo y alababan a Dios cantando:
14 «¡Gloria a Dios en el cielo,
y paz en la tierra

15 Después de que los ángeles volvieron al cielo, los pastores se dijeron unos a otros: «¡Vayamos corriendo a Belén para ver esto que Dios nos ha anunciado!»

22 Cuarenta días después de que Jesús nació, sus padres lo llevaron al templo de Jerusalén para presentarlo delante de Dios. 23 Así lo ordenaba la ley que dio Moisés: «Cuando el primer niño que nace es un varón, hay que dedicárselo a Dios.» 24 La ley también decía que debían presentar, como ofrenda a Dios, dos pichones de paloma o dos tórtolas.
25 En ese tiempo había en Jerusalén un hombre llamado Simeón, que obedecía a Dios y lo amaba mucho. Vivía esperando que Dios libertara al pueblo de Israel. El Espíritu Santo estaba sobre Simeón, 26 y le había dicho que no iba a morir sin ver antes al Mesías que Dios les había prometido.
27 Ese día, el Espíritu Santo le ordenó a Simeón que fuera al templo.

Él será una señal de advertencia, y muchos estarán en su contra. 35 Así se sabrá lo que en verdad piensa cada uno. Y a ti, María, esto te hará sufrir como si te clavaran una espada en el corazón.»
Jesús y la profetisa Ana
36 En el templo estaba también una mujer muy anciana, que era profetisa. Se llamaba Ana, era hija de Penuel y pertenecía a la tribu de Aser. Cuando Ana era joven, estuvo casada durante siete años, 37 pero ahora era viuda y tenía ochenta y cuatro años de edad. Se pasaba noche y día en el templo ayunando, orando y adorando a Dios.
38 Cuando Simeón terminó de hablar, Ana se acercó y comenzó a alabar a Dios, y a hablar acerca del niño Jesús a todos los que esperaban que Dios liberara a Jerusalén.
39 Por su parte, José y María cumplieron con todo lo que mandaba la ley de Dios y volvieron a su pueblo Nazaret, en la región de Galilea.
40 El niño Jesús crecía en estatura y con poder espiritual. Estaba lleno de sabiduría, y Dios estaba muy contento con él.
Jesús en el templo
41 José y María iban todos los años a la ciudad de Jerusalén para celebrar la fiesta de la Pascua. 42 Cuando Jesús cumplió doce años, los acompañó a Jerusalén.
43 Al terminar los días de la fiesta, sus padres regresaron a su casa; pero, sin que se dieran cuenta, Jesús se quedó en Jerusalén. 44 José y María caminaron un día entero, pensando que Jesús iba entre los compañeros de viaje. Después lo buscaron entre los familiares y conocidos, 45 pero no lo encontraron. Entonces volvieron a Jerusalén para buscarlo.
46 Al día siguiente encontraron a Jesús en el templo, en medio de los maestros de la Ley. Él los escuchaba con atención y les hacía preguntas. 47 Todos estaban admirados de su inteligencia y de las respuestas que daba a las preguntas que le hacían.
48 Sus padres se sorprendieron al verlo, y su madre le reclamó:
—¡Hijo! ¿Por qué nos has hecho esto? Tu padre y yo te hemos buscado. Estábamos muy preocupados por ti.
49 Pero Jesús les respondió:
—¿Y por qué me buscaban? ¿No sabían que yo debo estar en la casa de mi Padre?
50 Ellos no entendieron lo que quiso decirles.
51 Entonces Jesús volvió con sus padres a Nazaret, y los obedecía en todo.
Su madre pensaba mucho en todo lo que había pasado. 52 Mientras tanto, Jesús seguía creciendo en sabiduría y en estatura. Dios y toda la gente del pueblo estaban muy contentos con él, y lo querían mucho.

45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.
46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.
47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?
50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
