2 Men det skete i de dage, at en Befaling udgik fra Kejser Augustus, at al Verden skulde skrives i Mandtal. 2 (Denne første Indskrivning skete, da Kvirinius var Landshøvding i Syrien,) 3 Og alle gik for at lade sig indskrive, hver til sin By. 4 Og også Josef gik op fra Galilæa, fra Byen Nazareth til Judæa til Davids By, som kaldes Bethlehem, fordi han var af Davids Hus og Slægt, 5 for at lade sig indskrive tillige med Maria, sin trolovede, som var frugtsommelig. 6 Men det skete, medens de vare der, blev Tiden fuldkommet til, at hun skulde føde. 7 Og hun fødte sin Søn, den førstefødte, og svøbte ham og lagde ham i en Krybbe; thi der var ikke Rum for dem i Herberget.
8 Og der var Hyrder i den samme Egn, som lå ude på Marken og holdt Nattevagt over deres Hjord. 9 Og se, en Herrens Engel stod for dem, og Herrens Herlighed skinnede om dem, og de frygtede såre 10 Og Engelen sagde til dem: "Frygter ikke; thi se, jeg forkynder eder en stor Glæde, som skal være for hele Folket. 11 Thi eder er i dag en Frelser født, som er den Herre Kristus i Davids By. 12 Og dette skulle I have til Tegn: I skulle finde et Barn svøbt, liggende i en Krybbe." 13 Og straks var der med Engelen en himmelsk Hærskares Mangfoldighed, som lovede Gud og sagde: 14 "Ære være Gud i det højeste! og Fred på Jorden! i Mennesker Velbehag! 15 Og det skete, da Englene vare farne fra dem til Himmelen, sagde Hyrderne til hverandre: "Lader os dog gå til Bethlehem og se dette, som er sket, hvilket Herren har kundgjort os." 16 Og de skyndte sig og kom og fandt både Maria og Josef, og Barnet liggende i Krybben. 17 Men da de så det, kundgjorde de, hvad der var talt til dem om dette Barn. 18 Og alle de, som hørte det, undrede sig over det, der blev talt til dem af Hyrderne. 19 Men Maria gemte alle disse Ord og overvejede dem i sit Hjerte. 20 Og Hyrderne vendte tilbage, idet de priste og lovede Gud for alt, hvad de havde hørt og set, således som der var talt til dem.
21 Og da otte Dage vare fuldkommede, så han skulde omskæres, da blev hans Navn kaldt Jesus, som det var kaldt af Engelen, før han blev undfangen i Moders Liv.

Se, din Fader og jeg have ledt efter dig med Smerte." 49 Og han sagde til dem: "Hvorfor ledte I efter mig? Vidste I ikke, at jeg bør være i min Faders Gerning?" 50 Og de forstode ikke det Ord, som han talte til dem. 51 Og han drog ned med dem og kom til Nazareth og var dem lydig og hans Moder gemte alle de Ord i sit Hjerte. 52 Og Jesus forfremmedes i Visdom og Alder og yndest hos Gud og Mennesker.

Naissance de Jésus à Bethléhem
2 En ce temps-là parut un édit de César Auguste, ordonnant un recensement de toute la terre. 2 Ce premier recensement eut lieu pendant que Quirinius était gouverneur de Syrie. 3 Tous allaient se faire inscrire, chacun dans sa ville.
4 Joseph aussi monta de la Galilée, de la ville de Nazareth, pour se rendre en Judée, dans la ville de David, appelée Bethléhem, parce qu’il était de la maison et de la famille de David, 5 afin de se faire inscrire avec Marie, sa fiancée, qui était enceinte.
6 Pendant qu’ils étaient là, le temps où Marie devait accoucher arriva, 7 et elle enfanta son fils premier-né. Elle l’emmaillota, et le coucha dans une crèche, parce qu’il n’y avait pas de place pour eux dans l’hôtellerie.
8 Il y avait, dans cette même contrée, des bergers qui passaient dans les champs les veilles de la nuit pour garder leurs troupeaux. 9 Et voici, un ange du Seigneur leur apparut, et la gloire du Seigneur resplendit autour d’eux. Ils furent saisis d’une grande frayeur. 10 Mais l’ange leur dit: Ne craignez point; car je vous annonce une bonne nouvelle, qui sera pour tout le peuple le sujet d’une grande joie: 11 c’est qu’aujourd’hui, dans la ville de David, il vous est né un Sauveur, qui est le Christ, le Seigneur. 12 Et voici à quel signe vous le reconnaîtrez: vous trouverez un enfant emmailloté et couché dans une crèche.
13 Et soudain il se joignit à l’ange une multitude de l’armée céleste, louant Dieu et disant:
14 Gloire à Dieu dans les lieux très hauts,
Et paix sur la terre parmi les hommes qu’il agrée[a]!
15 Lorsque les anges les eurent quittés pour retourner au ciel, les bergers se dirent les uns aux autres: Allons jusqu’à Bethléhem, et voyons ce qui est arrivé, ce que le Seigneur nous a fait connaître. 16 Ils y allèrent en hâte, et ils trouvèrent Marie et Joseph, et le petit enfant couché dans la crèche. 17 Après l’avoir vu, ils racontèrent ce qui leur avait été dit au sujet de ce petit enfant. 18 Tous ceux qui les entendirent furent dans l’étonnement de ce que leur disaient les bergers. 19 Marie gardait toutes ces choses, et les repassait dans son cœur. 20 Et les bergers s’en retournèrent, glorifiant et louant Dieu pour tout ce qu’ils avaient entendu et vu, et qui était conforme à ce qui leur avait été annoncé.
Jésus présenté dans le Temple de Jérusalem
21 Le huitième jour, auquel l’enfant devait être circoncis, étant arrivé, on lui donna le nom de Jésus, nom qu’avait indiqué l’ange avant qu’il soit conçu dans le sein de sa mère. 22 Et, quand les jours de leur purification furent accomplis, selon la loi de Moïse, Joseph et Marie le portèrent à Jérusalem, pour le présenter au Seigneur 23 – suivant ce qui est écrit dans la loi du Seigneur: Tout mâle premier-né sera consacré au Seigneur[b] – 24 et pour offrir en sacrifice deux tourterelles ou deux jeunes pigeons, comme cela est prescrit dans la loi du Seigneur[c].
Adoration de Siméon et d’Anne
25 Et voici, il y avait à Jérusalem un homme appelé Siméon. Cet homme était juste et pieux, il attendait la consolation d’Israël, et l’Esprit-Saint était sur lui. 26 Il avait été divinement averti par le Saint-Esprit qu’il ne mourrait point avant d’avoir vu le Christ du Seigneur. 27 Il vint au temple, poussé par l’Esprit. Et, comme les parents apportaient le petit enfant Jésus pour accomplir à son égard ce qu’ordonnait la loi, 28 il le reçut dans ses bras, bénit Dieu, et dit:
29 Maintenant, Seigneur, tu laisses ton serviteur
S’en aller en paix, selon ta parole.
30 Car mes yeux ont vu ton salut,
31 Salut que tu as préparé devant tous les peuples,
32 Lumière pour éclairer les nations,
Et gloire d’Israël, ton peuple.
33 Son père et sa mère étaient dans l’admiration des choses qu’on disait de lui. 34 Siméon les bénit, et dit à Marie, sa mère: Voici, cet enfant est destiné à amener la chute et le relèvement de beaucoup en Israël, et à devenir un signe qui provoquera la contradiction, 35 et à toi-même une épée te transpercera l’âme, afin que les pensées de beaucoup de cœurs soient dévoilées.
36 Il y avait aussi une prophétesse, Anne, fille de Phanuel, de la tribu d’Aser. Elle était fort avancée en âge, et elle avait vécu sept ans avec son mari depuis sa virginité. 37 Restée veuve, et âgée de quatre-vingt-quatre ans, elle ne quittait pas le temple, et elle servait Dieu nuit et jour dans le jeûne et dans la prière. 38 Etant arrivée, elle aussi, à cette même heure, elle louait Dieu, et elle parlait de Jésus à tous ceux qui attendaient la délivrance de Jérusalem.
Retour à Nazareth
39 Lorsqu’ils eurent accompli tout ce qu’ordonnait la loi du Seigneur, Joseph et Marie retournèrent en Galilée, à Nazareth, leur ville.
40 Or, l’enfant croissait et se fortifiait. Il était rempli de sagesse, et la grâce de Dieu était sur lui.
Jésus à douze ans dans le temple
41 Les parents de Jésus allaient chaque année à Jérusalem, à la fête de Pâque.
42 Lorsqu’il fut âgé de douze ans, ils y montèrent, selon la coutume de la fête. 43 Puis, quand les jours furent écoulés, et qu’ils s’en retournèrent, l’enfant Jésus resta à Jérusalem. Son père et sa mère ne s’en aperçurent pas. 44 Croyant qu’il était avec leurs compagnons de voyage, ils firent une journée de chemin, et le cherchèrent parmi leurs parents et leurs connaissances. 45 Mais, ne l’ayant pas trouvé, ils retournèrent à Jérusalem pour le chercher. 46 Au bout de trois jours, ils le trouvèrent dans le temple, assis au milieu des docteurs, les écoutant et les interrogeant. 47 Tous ceux qui l’entendaient étaient frappés de son intelligence et de ses réponses. 48 Quand ses parents le virent, ils furent saisis d’étonnement, et sa mère lui dit: Mon enfant, pourquoi as-tu agi de la sorte avec nous? Voici, ton père et moi, nous te cherchions avec angoisse. 49 Il leur dit: Pourquoi me cherchiez-vous? Ne saviez-vous pas qu’il faut que je m’occupe des affaires de mon Père? 50 Mais ils ne comprirent pas ce qu’il leur disait. 51 Puis il descendit avec eux pour aller à Nazareth, et il leur était soumis. Sa mère gardait toutes ces choses dans son cœur.
52 Et Jésus croissait en sagesse, en stature, et en grâce, devant Dieu et devant les hommes.

The Birth of Jesus(A)
2 At that time Emperor Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Roman Empire. 2 When this first census took place, Quirinius was the governor of Syria. 3 Everyone, then, went to register himself, each to his own hometown.
4 Joseph went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to the town of Bethlehem in Judea, the birthplace of King David. Joseph went there because he was a descendant of David. 5 He went to register with Mary, who was promised in marriage to him. She was pregnant, 6 and while they were in Bethlehem, the time came for her to have her baby. 7 She gave birth to her first son, wrapped him in cloths and laid him in a manger—there was no room for them to stay in the inn.
The Shepherds and the Angels
8 There were some shepherds in that part of the country who were spending the night in the fields, taking care of their flocks. 9 (B)An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone over them. They were terribly afraid, 10 but the angel said to them, “Don't be afraid! I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all the people. 11 This very day in David's town your Savior was born—Christ the Lord! 12 And this is what will prove it to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
13 Suddenly a great army of heaven's angels appeared with the angel, singing praises to God:
14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and peace on earth to those with whom he is pleased!”
15 When the angels went away from them back into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us.”
16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and saw the baby lying in the manger. 17 When the shepherds saw him, they told them what the angel had said about the child. 18 All who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said. 19 Mary remembered all these things and thought deeply about them. 20 The shepherds went back, singing praises to God for all they had heard and seen; it had been just as the angel had told them.
Jesus Is Named
21 (C)A week later, when the time came for the baby to be circumcised, he was named Jesus, the name which the angel had given him before he had been conceived.
Jesus Is Presented in the Temple
22 The time came for Joseph and Mary to perform the ceremony of purification, as the Law of Moses commanded. So they took the child to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, 23 (D)as it is written in the law of the Lord: “Every first-born male is to be dedicated to the Lord.” 24 (E)They also went to offer a sacrifice of a pair of doves or two young pigeons, as required by the law of the Lord.
25 At that time there was a man named Simeon living in Jerusalem. He was a good, God-fearing man and was waiting for Israel to be saved. The Holy Spirit was with him 26 and had assured him that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's promised Messiah. 27 Led by the Spirit, Simeon went into the Temple. When the parents brought the child Jesus into the Temple to do for him what the Law required, 28 Simeon took the child in his arms and gave thanks to God:
29 “Now, Lord, you have kept your promise,
and you may let your servant go in peace.
30 With my own eyes I have seen your salvation,
31 which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples:
32 (F)A light to reveal your will to the Gentiles
and bring glory to your people Israel.”
33 The child's father and mother were amazed at the things Simeon said about him. 34 Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother, “This child is chosen by God for the destruction and the salvation of many in Israel. He will be a sign from God which many people will speak against 35 and so reveal their secret thoughts. And sorrow, like a sharp sword, will break your own heart.”
36-37 (G)There was a very old prophet, a widow named Anna, daughter of Phanuel of the tribe of Asher. She had been married for only seven years and was now eighty-four years old.[a] She never left the Temple; day and night she worshiped God, fasting and praying. 38 That very same hour she arrived and gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were waiting for God to set Jerusalem free.
The Return to Nazareth
39 (H)When Joseph and Mary had finished doing all that was required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to their hometown of Nazareth in Galilee. 40 The child grew and became strong; he was full of wisdom, and God's blessings were upon him.
The Boy Jesus in the Temple
41 (I)Every year the parents of Jesus went to Jerusalem for the Passover Festival. 42 When Jesus was twelve years old, they went to the festival as usual. 43 When the festival was over, they started back home, but the boy Jesus stayed in Jerusalem. His parents did not know this; 44 they thought that he was with the group, so they traveled a whole day and then started looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45 They did not find him, so they went back to Jerusalem looking for him. 46 On the third day they found him in the Temple, sitting with the Jewish teachers, listening to them and asking questions. 47 All who heard him were amazed at his intelligent answers. 48 His parents were astonished when they saw him, and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been terribly worried trying to find you.”
49 He answered them, “Why did you have to look for me? Didn't you know that I had to be in my Father's house?” 50 But they did not understand his answer.
51 So Jesus went back with them to Nazareth, where he was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52 (J)Jesus grew both in body and in wisdom, gaining favor with God and people.

The Birth of Jesus
2 In those days Caesar Augustus(A) issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.(B) 2 (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.)(C) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.
4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem(D) the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him(E) and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.
8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel(F) of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.(G) I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior(H) has been born to you; he is the Messiah,(I) the Lord.(J) 12 This will be a sign(K) to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace(L) to those on whom his favor rests.”
15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.(M) 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.(N) 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God(O) for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.
21 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child,(P) he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.(Q)
Jesus Presented in the Temple
22 When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses,(R) Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”[b]),(S) 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”[c](T)
25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout.(U) He was waiting for the consolation of Israel,(V) and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required,(W) 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,(X)
you may now dismiss[d] your servant in peace.(Y)
30 For my eyes have seen your salvation,(Z)
31 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.”(AA)
33 The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother:(AB) “This child is destined to cause the falling(AC) and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”
36 There was also a prophet,(AD) Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37 and then was a widow until she was eighty-four.[e](AE) She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.(AF) 38 Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.(AG)
39 When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.(AH) 40 And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.(AI)
The Boy Jesus at the Temple
41 Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover.(AJ) 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. 43 After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. 44 Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45 When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed(AK) at his understanding and his answers. 48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother(AL) said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father(AM) and I have been anxiously searching for you.”
49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”[f](AN) 50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them.(AO)
51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them(AP) and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.(AQ) 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.(AR)
