Luka piše o Isusovom životu
1 Cijenjeni Teofile! Mnogi su pokušali prikazati događaje što su se zbili među nama. 2 Prenijeli su nam ih oni koji su ih vidjeli od početka i koji su govorili Božju poruku. 3 I ja sam pomno proučio sve od početka pa sam pomislio da bi bilo dobro da sve te događaje zabilježim redom kako su se dogodili. 4 Tako ćeš biti siguran da je ono što su te učili istina.
Zaharija i Elizabeta
5 U vrijeme Heroda, judejskoga kralja, živio je svećenik po imenu Zaharija iz Abijinoga svećeničkog reda. Zaharijina je žena potjecala iz Aronovog roda i zvala se Elizabeta. 6 Oboje su bili pravedni u Božjim očima jer su besprijekorno vršili Gospodinove zapovijedi i odredbe. 7 No nisu imali djece jer je Elizabeta bila nerotkinja, a bili su i veoma stari.
8 Jednom je prilikom došao red na Zahariju da služi u Hramu prema rasporedu svoje skupine. 9 Prema svećeničkom običaju, izabrali su ga kockom da u Gospodinovom Hramu prinese kâd. 10 Kad je došlo vrijeme prinošenja kâda, mnoštvo se okupilo vani i molilo. 11 Tada se Zahariji ukazao Gospodinov anđeo kako stoji s desne strane kadionog žrtvenika. 12 Kad je spazio anđela, Zaharija se uznemirio i prestrašio. 13 No anđeo mu je rekao: »Ne boj se, Zaharija, jer Bog je čuo tvoju molitvu! Tvoja će žena Elizabeta roditi sina i nazvat ćeš ga Ivan. 14 On će ti donijeti radost i veselje. Mnogi će se radovati zbog njegovog rođenja 15 jer će biti velik u Gospodinovim očima. On neće piti nikakva vina ni žestokog pića, a od rođenja će biti ispunjen Svetim Duhom. 16 Zahvaljujući njemu, mnogi će se Izraelci vratiti Gospodinu, svome Bogu. 17 A Ivan će ići pred njim pun Duha i moći koje je imao Ilija. Pomirit će djecu s očevima i neposlušne navesti da prihvate put pravednosti kako bi pripremio narod za Gospodina.«
18 Na to je Zaharija rekao anđelu: »Kako ću znati da je to istina? Ja sam star, a i žena mi je stara.«
19 Anđeo mu je odgovorio: »Ja sam Gabriel, onaj koji stoji pred Bogom. Poslan sam da razgovaram s tobom i prenesem ti ovu radosnu vijest. 20 A sad znaj: budući da nisi vjerovao mojim riječima, koje će se ispuniti kada za to dođe vrijeme, zanijemit ćeš i nećeš moći govoriti sve do onoga dana dok se to ne dogodi.«
21 Okupljeni je narod čekao Zahariju i čudio se što tako dugo ne izlazi iz Hrama. 22 Kad je Zaharija izašao, nije mogao govoriti i svi su shvatili da je u Hramu imao viđenje. Sporazumijevao se s njima znakovima, ali nije progovorio ni riječi. 23 Kad je završilo vrijeme njegove službe, vratio se kući.
24 Nakon nekog vremena, njegova je žena Elizabeta zatrudnjela; pet mjeseci nije izlazila iz kuće. Rekla je: 25 »Pogledaj što mi je učinio Gospodin! Iskazao mi je svoju naklonost i skinuo s mene ovu sramotu pred ljudima.«
Navještaj Isusovog rođenja
26 Elizabeta je bila u šestome mjesecu trudnoće kad je Bog poslao anđela Gabriela u galilejski grad Nazaret, 27 k djevici zaručenoj za čovjeka po imenu Josip, iz Davidovog roda. Djevojka se zvala Marija. 28 Gabriel joj je rekao: »Pozdravljam te, milošću obdarena! Gospodin je s tobom.«
29 Nju su ove riječi uznemirile i pitala se što bi trebao značiti taj pozdrav.
30 Anđeo joj je rekao: »Ne boj se, Marijo, jer si stekla Božju naklonost. 31 Znaj, zatrudnjet ćeš i roditi sina kojeg ćeš nazvati Isus. 32 On će biti velik i zvat će se Sinom Svevišnjega Boga. Gospodin Bog dat će mu prijestolje njegovog oca Davida. 33 On će zauvijek vladati Jakovljevom kućom i njegovo će Kraljevstvo trajati vječno.«
34 Na to je Marija rekla anđelu: »Kako je to moguće? Pa ja sam još djevica!«
35 Anđeo joj je odgovorio: »Sveti Duh sići će na tebe i sila Svevišnjega prekrit će te. I zato će se sveto dijete, koje ćeš roditi, zvati Božjim Sinom. 36 Ali čuj i ovo: tvoja rođakinja Elizabeta u svojoj odmakloj dobi također nosi sina. Ona ista žena, za koju su govorili da ne može imati djece, već je u šestome mjesecu trudnoće! 37 Bogu ništa nije nemoguće.«
38 Marija je rekla: »Gospodinova sam sluškinja, neka sa mnom bude tako kao što si rekao.« I anđeo je otišao od nje.
Marijin posjet Zahariji i Elizabeti
39 Odmah nakon toga Marija se spremila i žurno krenula u mjesto u brdovitom kraju Judeje. 40 Ušla je u Zaharijinu kuću i pozdravila Elizabetu. 41 Kad je Elizabeta začula Marijin pozdrav, dijete je u njoj poskočilo, a Elizabeta se ispunila Svetim Duhom. 42 Na sav je glas uskliknula: »Ti si najblagoslovljenija od svih žena! I dijete koje ćeš roditi je blagoslovljeno! 43 Čime sam zaslužila tu čast da majka mojega Gospodina dolazi k meni? 44 Jer, čim sam začula tvoj pozdrav, dijete u mojoj utrobi poskočilo je od radosti. 45 Blagoslovljena si jer si vjerovala da će se obistiniti ono što je rekao Bog.«
Marija slavi Boga
46 Na to je Marija rekla:
»Moja duša slavi Gospodina
47 i moj duh se raduje u Bogu, mome Spasitelju,
48 jer je pokazao brigu za svoju poniznu sluškinju.
Da, od sada će me svi naraštaji zvati blagoslovljenom
49 jer je Svemoćni učinio za mene velike stvari.
Sveto je ime njegovo.
50 Iz pokoljenja u pokoljenje
iskazuje milost onima koji ga se boje.
51 Svojom je rukom učinio silna djela:
raspršio je one koji su u svom srcu oholi i umišljeni.
52 Vladare je svrgnuo s njihovih prijestolja,
a ponizne je uzvisio.
53 Gladne je obasuo svakovrsnim dobrima,
a bogataše poslao od sebe praznih ruku.
54 Pomogao je svom slugi, Izraelu,
sjetio se svoga milosrđa,
55 kao što je zauvijek obećao našim precima,
Abrahamu i njegovim potomcima.«
56 Marija je ostala kod Elizabete oko tri mjeseca, a zatim se vratila kući.
Ivanovo rođenje
57 Kad je Elizabeti došlo vrijeme, rodila je sina. 58 Svi su njezini susjedi i rodbina čuli da joj je Gospodin iskazao veliku milost i radovali su se zajedno s njom.
59 Kad su osmoga dana nakon djetetovog rođenja došli da ga obrežu, htjeli su mu dati ime Zaharija, po ocu. 60 No djetetova je majka rekla: »Ne! Zvat će se Ivan.«
61 A oni su joj odgovorili: »Nitko se od tvoje rodbine ne zove tako.« 62 Zatim su, služeći se znakovima, upitali oca koje ime želi dati djetetu.
63 Zaharija je zatražio pločicu za pisanje i napisao: »Ime mu je Ivan.« Svi su se začudili. 64 Istoga su se trena Zahariji otvorila usta i razvezao jezik te je počeo govoriti i slaviti Boga. 65 Strah je obuzeo sve susjede i po cijelome judejskom gorju ljudi su prepričavali ove događaje. 66 Svi koji su za njih čuli, razmišljali su o tome i govorili: »Što li će biti od ovog djeteta?« Jer, bilo je očito da je Gospodin s njim.
Zaharija slavi Boga
67 Ivanov otac Zaharija ispunio se Svetim Duhom i počeo proročki govoriti:
68 »Neka je blagoslovljen Gospodin,
Bog Izraelov, jer je došao otkupiti svoj narod.
69 Poslao nam je moćnoga Spasitelja
iz roda svoga sluge Davida,
70 kao što je davno obećao
po svojim svetim prorocima.
71 Obećao je da će nas spasiti od neprijatelja
i iz ruku svih onih koji nas mrze;
72 da će iskazati milost našim precima
i sjetiti se svoga svetog zavjeta.
73 To je bilo obećanje što ga je dao
našem pretku Abrahamu:
74 da će nas izbaviti iz ruku neprijatelja
i dopustiti da mu služimo bez straha
75 te da pred njim budemo sveti i pravedni
dokle god živimo.
76 Ti ćeš se, dijete moje, zvati prorokom Svevišnjega Boga
jer ćeš ići pred Gospodinom, da mu pripremiš put.
77 Donijet ćeš ljudima saznanje o spasenju
kroz oproštenje njihovih grijeha.
78 Zbog duboke samilosti našega Boga,
osvanut će nam s visina nova zora,
79 da obasja one koji žive u tami i strahu od smrti
i da vodi naše korake na put mira.«
80 Dječak je rastao i jačao u duhu. Živio je u pustinji sve do dana dok nije stupio pred izraelski narod.

Introduction(A)
1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled[a] among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first(B) were eyewitnesses(C) and servants of the word.(D) 3 With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account(E) for you, most excellent(F) Theophilus,(G) 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.(H)
The Birth of John the Baptist Foretold
5 In the time of Herod king of Judea(I) there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah;(J) his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly.(K) 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.
8 Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,(L) 9 he was chosen by lot,(M) according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.(N) 10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.(O)
11 Then an angel(P) of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.(Q) 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.(R) 13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid,(S) Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.(T) 14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth,(U) 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink,(V) and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit(W) even before he is born.(X) 16 He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 And he will go on before the Lord,(Y) in the spirit and power of Elijah,(Z) to turn the hearts of the parents to their children(AA) and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”(AB)
18 Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this?(AC) I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”(AD)
19 The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel.(AE) I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. 20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak(AF) until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.”
21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. 22 When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs(AG) to them but remained unable to speak.
23 When his time of service was completed, he returned home. 24 After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. 25 “The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace(AH) among the people.”
The Birth of Jesus Foretold
26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel(AI) to Nazareth,(AJ) a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph,(AK) a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid,(AL) Mary; you have found favor with God.(AM) 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.(AN) 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.(AO) The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,(AP) 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom(AQ) will never end.”(AR)
34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you,(AS) and the power of the Most High(AT) will overshadow you. So the holy one(AU) to be born will be called[b] the Son of God.(AV) 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child(AW) in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.”(AX)
38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.
Mary Visits Elizabeth
39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea,(AY) 40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.(AZ) 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women,(BA) and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord(BB) should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”
Mary’s Song(BC)
46 And Mary said:
“My soul glorifies the Lord(BD)
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,(BE)
48 for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.(BF)
From now on all generations will call me blessed,(BG)
49 for the Mighty One has done great things(BH) for me—
holy is his name.(BI)
50 His mercy extends to those who fear him,
from generation to generation.(BJ)
51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;(BK)
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.(BL)
52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones

53 He has filled the hungry with good things(BN)

54 He has helped his servant Israel,

55 to Abraham and his descendants(BP) forever,
just as he promised our ancestors.”
56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.
The Birth of John the Baptist
57 When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.
59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise(BQ) the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, 60 but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.”(BR)
61 They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has that name.”
62 Then they made signs(BS) to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.”(BT) 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak,(BU) praising God. 65 All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea(BV) people were talking about all these things. 66 Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, “What then is this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.(BW)
Zechariah’s Song
67 His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit(BX) and prophesied:(BY)
68 “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,(BZ)
because he has come to his people and redeemed them.(CA)
69 He has raised up a horn[c](CB) of salvation for us
in the house of his servant David(CC)
70 (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago),(CD)
71 salvation from our enemies
and from the hand of all who hate us—
72 to show mercy to our ancestors(CE)
and to remember his holy covenant,(CF)
73 the oath he swore to our father Abraham:(CG)
74 to rescue us from the hand of our enemies,

1 1-2 Dear friend who loves God:[a]
Several biographies of Christ have already been written using as their source material the reports circulating among us from the early disciples and other eyewitnesses. 3 However, it occurred to me that it would be well to recheck all these accounts from first to last and after thorough investigation to pass this summary on to you,[b] 4 to reassure you of the truth of all you were taught.
5 My story begins with a Jewish priest, Zacharias, who lived when Herod was king of Judea. Zacharias was a member of the Abijah division of the Temple service corps. (His wife, Elizabeth, was, like himself, a member of the priest tribe of the Jews, a descendant of Aaron.) 6 Zacharias and Elizabeth were godly folk, careful to obey all of God’s laws in spirit as well as in letter. 7 But they had no children, for Elizabeth was barren; and now they were both very old.
8-9 One day as Zacharias was going about his work in the Temple—for his division was on duty that week—the honor fell to him by lot[c] to enter the inner sanctuary and burn incense before the Lord. 10 Meanwhile, a great crowd stood outside in the Temple court, praying as they always did during that part of the service when the incense was being burned.
11-12 Zacharias was in the sanctuary when suddenly an angel appeared, standing to the right of the altar of incense! Zacharias was startled and terrified.
13 But the angel said, “Don’t be afraid, Zacharias! For I have come to tell you that God has heard your prayer, and your wife, Elizabeth, will bear you a son! And you are to name him John. 14 You will both have great joy and gladness at his birth, and many will rejoice with you. 15 For he will be one of the Lord’s great men. He must never touch wine or hard liquor—and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from before his birth! 16 And he will persuade many a Jew to turn to the Lord his God. 17 He will be a man of rugged[d] spirit and power like Elijah, the prophet of old; and he will precede the coming of the Messiah, preparing the people for his arrival. He will soften adult hearts to become like little children’s, and will change disobedient minds to the wisdom of faith.”
18 Zacharias said to the angel, “But this is impossible! I’m an old man now, and my wife is also well along in years.”
19 Then the angel said, “I am Gabriel! I stand in the very presence of God. It was he who sent me to you with this good news! 20 And now, because you haven’t believed me, you are to be stricken silent, unable to speak until the child is born. For my words will certainly come true at the proper time.”
21 Meanwhile the crowds outside were waiting for Zacharias to appear and wondered why he was taking so long. 22 When he finally came out, he couldn’t speak to them, and they realized from his gestures that he must have seen a vision in the Temple. 23 He stayed on at the Temple for the remaining days of his Temple duties and then returned home. 24 Soon afterwards Elizabeth his wife became pregnant and went into seclusion for five months.
25 “How kind the Lord is,” she exclaimed, “to take away my disgrace of having no children!”
26 The following month God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, 27 to a virgin, Mary, engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David.
28 Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Congratulations, favored lady! The Lord is with you!”[e]
29 Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean.
30 “Don’t be frightened, Mary,” the angel told her, “for God has decided to wonderfully bless you! 31 Very soon now, you will become pregnant and have a baby boy, and you are to name him ‘Jesus.’ 32 He shall be very great and shall be called the Son of God. And the Lord God shall give him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 And he shall reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom shall never end!”
34 Mary asked the angel, “But how can I have a baby? I am a virgin.”
35 The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit shall come upon you, and the power of God shall overshadow you; so the baby born to you will be utterly holy—the Son of God. 36 Furthermore, six months ago your Aunt[f] Elizabeth—‘the barren one,’ they called her—became pregnant in her old age! 37 For every promise from God shall surely come true.”
38 Mary said, “I am the Lord’s servant, and I am willing to do whatever he wants. May everything you said come true.” And then the angel disappeared.
39-40 A few days later Mary hurried to the highlands of Judea to the town where Zacharias lived, to visit Elizabeth.
41 At the sound of Mary’s greeting, Elizabeth’s child leaped within her and she was filled with the Holy Spirit.
42 She gave a glad cry and exclaimed to Mary, “You are favored by God above all other women, and your child is destined for God’s mightiest praise. 43 What an honor this is, that the mother of my Lord should visit me! 44 When you came in and greeted me, the instant I heard your voice, my baby moved in me for joy! 45 You believed that God would do what he said; that is why he has given you this wonderful blessing.”
46 Mary responded, “Oh, how I praise the Lord. 47 How I rejoice in God my Savior! 48 For he took notice of his lowly servant girl, and now generation after generation forever shall call me blest of God. 49 For he, the mighty Holy One, has done great things to me. 50 His mercy goes on from generation to generation, to all who reverence him.
51 “How powerful is his mighty arm! How he scatters the proud and haughty ones! 52 He has torn princes from their thrones and exalted the lowly. 53 He has satisfied the hungry hearts and sent the rich away with empty hands. 54 And how he has helped his servant Israel! He has not forgotten his promise to be merciful. 55 For he promised our fathers—Abraham and his children—to be merciful to them forever.”
56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months and then went back to her own home.
57 By now Elizabeth’s waiting was over, for the time had come for the baby to be born—and it was a boy. 58 The word spread quickly to her neighbors and relatives of how kind the Lord had been to her, and everyone rejoiced.
59 When the baby was eight days old, all the relatives and friends came for the circumcision ceremony. They all assumed the baby’s name would be Zacharias, after his father.
60 But Elizabeth said, “No! He must be named John!”
61 “What?” they exclaimed. “There is no one in all your family by that name.” 62 So they asked the baby’s father, talking to him by gestures.[g]
63 He motioned for a piece of paper and to everyone’s surprise wrote, “His name is John!” 64 Instantly Zacharias could speak again, and he began praising God.
65 Wonder fell upon the whole neighborhood, and the news of what had happened spread through the Judean hills. 66 And everyone who heard about it thought long thoughts and asked, “I wonder what this child will turn out to be? For the hand of the Lord is surely upon him in some special way.”
67 Then his father, Zacharias, was filled with the Holy Spirit and gave this prophecy:
68 “Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has come to visit his people and has redeemed them. 69 He is sending us a Mighty Savior from the royal line of his servant David, 70 just as he promised through his holy prophets long ago— 71 someone to save us from our enemies, from all who hate us.
72-73 “He has been merciful to our ancestors, yes, to Abraham himself, by remembering his sacred promise to him, 74 and by granting us the privilege of serving God fearlessly, freed from our enemies, 75 and by making us holy and acceptable, ready to stand in his presence forever.
76 “And you, my little son, shall be called the prophet of the glorious God, for you will prepare the way for the Messiah. 77 You will tell his people how to find salvation through forgiveness of their sins. 78 All this will be because the mercy of our God is very tender, and heaven’s dawn is about to break upon us, 79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and death’s shadow, and to guide us to the path of peace.”
80 The little boy greatly loved God[h] and when he grew up he lived out in the lonely wilderness until he began his public ministry to Israel.

- Luke 1:17 rugged, implied. and will change disobedient minds to the wisdom of faith, literally, “to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just.”
- Luke 1:28 The Lord is with you. Some ancient versions add, “Blessed are you among women,” as in v. 42, which appears in all manuscripts.
- Luke 1:36 Aunt, literally, “relative.”
- Luke 1:62 talking to him by gestures. Zacharias was apparently stone deaf as well as speechless, and had not heard what his wife had said.
- Luke 1:80 greatly loved God, “became strong in spirit.”
