A Parábola do Semeador(A)
8 Depois disso Jesus ia passando pelas cidades e povoados proclamando as boas novas do Reino de Deus. Os Doze estavam com ele, 2 e também algumas mulheres que haviam sido curadas de espíritos malignos e doenças: Maria, chamada Madalena, de quem haviam saído sete demônios; 3 Joana, mulher de Cuza, administrador da casa de Herodes; Susana e muitas outras. Essas mulheres ajudavam a sustentá-los com os seus bens.
4 Reunindo-se uma grande multidão e vindo a Jesus gente de várias cidades, ele contou esta parábola: 5 “O semeador saiu a semear. Enquanto lançava a semente, parte dela caiu à beira do caminho; foi pisada, e as aves do céu a comeram. 6 Parte dela caiu sobre pedras e, quando germinou, as plantas secaram, porque não havia umidade. 7 Outra parte caiu entre espinhos, que cresceram com ela e sufocaram as plantas. 8 Outra ainda caiu em boa terra. Cresceu e deu boa colheita, a cem por um”.
Tendo dito isso, exclamou: “Aquele que tem ouvidos para ouvir, ouça!”
9 Seus discípulos perguntaram-lhe o que significava aquela parábola. 10 Ele disse: “A vocês foi dado o conhecimento dos mistérios do Reino de Deus, mas aos outros falo por parábolas, para que
“‘vendo, não vejam;
e ouvindo, não entendam’[a].
11 “Este é o significado da parábola: A semente é a palavra de Deus. 12 As que caíram à beira do caminho são os que ouvem, e então vem o Diabo e tira a palavra do seu coração, para que não creiam e não sejam salvos. 13 As que caíram sobre as pedras são os que recebem a palavra com alegria quando a ouvem, mas não têm raiz. Crêem durante algum tempo, mas desistem na hora da provação. 14 As que caíram entre espinhos são os que ouvem, mas, ao seguirem seu caminho, são sufocados pelas preocupações, pelas riquezas e pelos prazeres desta vida, e não amadurecem. 15 Mas as que caíram em boa terra são os que, com coração bom e generoso, ouvem a palavra, a retêm e dão fruto, com perseverança.
A Candeia(B)
16 “Ninguém acende uma candeia e a esconde num jarro ou a coloca debaixo de uma cama. Ao contrário, coloca-a num lugar apropriado, de modo que os que entram possam ver a luz. 17 Porque não há nada oculto que não venha a ser revelado, e nada escondido que não venha a ser conhecido e trazido à luz. 18 Portanto, considerem atentamente como vocês estão ouvindo. A quem tiver, mais lhe será dado; de quem não tiver, até o que pensa que tem lhe será tirado”.
A Mãe e os Irmãos de Jesus(C)
19 A mãe e os irmãos de Jesus foram vê-lo, mas não conseguiam aproximar-se dele, por causa da multidão. 20 Alguém lhe disse: “Tua mãe e teus irmãos estão lá fora e querem ver-te”.
21 Ele lhe respondeu: “Minha mãe e meus irmãos são aqueles que ouvem a palavra de Deus e a praticam”.
Jesus Acalma a Tempestade(D)
22 Certo dia Jesus disse aos seus discípulos: “Vamos para o outro lado do lago”. Eles entraram num barco e partiram. 23 Enquanto navegavam, ele adormeceu. Abateu-se sobre o lago um forte vendaval, de modo que o barco estava sendo inundado, e eles corriam grande perigo. 24 Os discípulos foram acordá-lo, clamando: “Mestre, Mestre, vamos morrer!”
Ele se levantou e repreendeu o vento e a violência das águas; tudo se acalmou e ficou tranqüilo. 25 “Onde está a sua fé?”, perguntou ele aos seus discípulos.
Amedrontados e admirados, eles perguntaram uns aos outros: “Quem é este que até aos ventos e às águas dá ordens, e eles lhe obedecem?”
A Cura de um Endemoninhado(E)
26 Navegaram para a região dos gerasenos[b], que fica do outro lado do lago, frente à Galiléia. 27 Quando Jesus pisou em terra, foi ao encontro dele um endemoninhado daquela cidade. Fazia muito tempo que aquele homem não usava roupas, nem vivia em casa alguma, mas nos sepulcros. 28 Quando viu Jesus, gritou, prostrou-se aos seus pés e disse em alta voz: “Que queres comigo, Jesus, Filho do Deus Altíssimo? Rogo-te que não me atormentes!” 29 Pois Jesus havia ordenado que o espírito imundo saísse daquele homem. Muitas vezes ele tinha se apoderado dele. Mesmo com os pés e as mãos acorrentados e entregue aos cuidados de guardas, quebrava as correntes, e era levado pelo demônio a lugares solitários.
30 Jesus lhe perguntou: “Qual é o seu nome?”
“Legião”, respondeu ele; porque muitos demônios haviam entrado nele. 31 E imploravam-lhe que não os mandasse para o Abismo.
32 Uma grande manada de porcos estava pastando naquela colina. Os demônios imploraram a Jesus que lhes permitisse entrar neles, e Jesus lhes deu permissão. 33 Saindo do homem, os demônios entraram nos porcos, e toda a manada atirou-se precipício abaixo em direção ao lago e se afogou.
34 Vendo o que acontecera, os que cuidavam dos porcos fugiram e contaram esses fatos, na cidade e nos campos, 35 e o povo foi ver o que havia acontecido. Quando se aproximaram de Jesus, viram que o homem de quem haviam saído os demônios estava assentado aos pés de Jesus, vestido e em perfeito juízo, e ficaram com medo. 36 Os que o tinham visto contaram ao povo como o endemoninhado fora curado. 37 Então, todo o povo da região dos gerasenos suplicou a Jesus que se retirasse, porque estavam dominados pelo medo. Ele entrou no barco e regressou.
38 O homem de quem haviam saído os demônios suplicava-lhe que o deixasse ir com ele; mas Jesus o mandou embora, dizendo: 39 “Volte para casa e conte o quanto Deus lhe fez”. Assim, o homem se foi e anunciou na cidade inteira o quanto Jesus tinha feito por ele.
O Poder de Jesus sobre a Doença e a Morte(F)
40 Quando Jesus voltou, uma multidão o recebeu com alegria, pois todos o esperavam. 41 Então um homem chamado Jairo, dirigente da sinagoga, veio e prostrou-se aos pés de Jesus, implorando-lhe que fosse à sua casa 42 porque sua única filha, de cerca de doze anos, estava à morte.
Estando Jesus a caminho, a multidão o comprimia. 43 E estava ali certa mulher que havia doze anos vinha sofrendo de hemorragia e gastara tudo o que tinha com os médicos[c]; mas ninguém pudera curá-la. 44 Ela chegou por trás dele, tocou na borda de seu manto, e imediatamente cessou sua hemorragia.
45 “Quem tocou em mim?”, perguntou Jesus.
Como todos negassem, Pedro disse: “Mestre, a multidão se aglomera e te comprime”.
46 Mas Jesus disse: “Alguém tocou em mim; eu sei que de mim saiu poder”.
47 Então a mulher, vendo que não conseguiria passar despercebida, veio tremendo e prostrou-se aos seus pés. Na presença de todo o povo contou por que tinha tocado nele e como fora instantaneamente curada. 48 Então ele lhe disse: “Filha, a sua fé a curou[d]! Vá em paz”.
49 Enquanto Jesus ainda estava falando, chegou alguém da casa de Jairo, o dirigente da sinagoga, e disse: “Sua filha morreu. Não incomode mais o Mestre”.
50 Ouvindo isso, Jesus disse a Jairo: “Não tenha medo; tão-somente creia, e ela será curada”.
51 Quando chegou à casa de Jairo, não deixou ninguém entrar com ele, exceto Pedro, João, Tiago e o pai e a mãe da criança. 52 Enquanto isso, todo o povo estava se lamentando e chorando por ela. “Não chorem”, disse Jesus. “Ela não está morta, mas dorme.”
53 Todos começaram a rir dele, pois sabiam que ela estava morta. 54 Mas ele a tomou pela mão e disse: “Menina, levante-se!” 55 O espírito dela voltou, e ela se levantou imediatamente. Então Jesus lhes ordenou que lhe dessem de comer. 56 Os pais dela ficaram maravilhados, mas ele lhes ordenou que não contassem a ninguém o que tinha acontecido.

Mulheres que seguiam Jesus
8 Pouco tempo depois, Jesus começou a percorrer as cidades e os povoados vizinhos, anunciando as boas-novas a respeito do reino de Deus. Iam com ele os Doze 2 e também algumas mulheres que tinham sido curadas de espíritos impuros e enfermidades. Entre elas estavam Maria Madalena, de quem ele havia expulsado sete demônios; 3 Joana, esposa de Cuza, administrador de Herodes; Susana, e muitas outras que contribuíam com seus próprios recursos para o sustento de Jesus e seus discípulos.
A parábola do semeador
4 Certo dia, uma grande multidão, vinda de várias cidades, juntou-se para ouvir Jesus, e ele lhes contou uma parábola: 5 “Um lavrador saiu para semear. Enquanto espalhava as sementes pelo campo, algumas caíram à beira do caminho, onde foram pisadas, e as aves vieram e as comeram. 6 Outras caíram entre as pedras e começaram a crescer, mas as plantas logo murcharam por falta de umidade. 7 Outras sementes caíram entre os espinhos, que cresceram com elas e sufocaram os brotos. 8 Ainda outras caíram em solo fértil e produziram uma colheita cem vezes maior que a quantidade semeada”. Quando ele terminou de dizer isso, declarou: “Quem é capaz de ouvir, ouça com atenção!”.
9 Seus discípulos lhe perguntaram o que a parábola significava. 10 Ele respondeu: “A vocês é permitido entender os segredos[a] do reino de Deus, mas uso parábolas para ensinar os outros, a fim de que,
‘Quando olharem, não vejam;
quando escutarem, não entendam’.[b]
11 “Este é o significado da parábola: As sementes são a palavra de Deus. 12 As sementes que caíram à beira do caminho representam os que ouvem a mensagem, mas o diabo vem e a arranca do coração deles e os impede de crer e ser salvos. 13 As sementes no solo rochoso representam os que ouvem a mensagem e a recebem com alegria. Uma vez, porém, que não têm raízes profundas, creem apenas por um tempo e depois desanimam quando enfrentam provações. 14 As que caíram entre os espinhos representam outros que ouvem a mensagem, mas logo ela é sufocada pelas preocupações, riquezas e prazeres desta vida, de modo que nunca amadurecem. 15 E as que caíram em solo fértil representam os que, com coração bom e receptivo, ouvem a mensagem, a aceitam e, com paciência, produzem uma grande colheita.”
A parábola da lâmpada
16 “Não faz sentido acender uma lâmpada e depois cobri-la com uma vasilha ou escondê-la debaixo da cama. Pelo contrário, ela é colocada num pedestal, de onde sua luz pode ser vista pelos que entram na casa. 17 Da mesma forma, tudo que está escondido será revelado, e tudo que está oculto virá à luz e será conhecido por todos.
18 “Portanto, ouçam com atenção! Pois ao que tem, mais lhe será dado, mas do que não tem, até o que pensa ter lhe será tomado”.
A verdadeira família de Jesus
19 Então a mãe e os irmãos de Jesus foram vê-lo, mas não conseguiram chegar até ele por causa da multidão. 20 Alguém disse a Jesus: “Sua mãe e seus irmãos estão lá fora e querem vê-lo”.
21 Jesus respondeu: “Minha mãe e meus irmãos são aqueles que ouvem a palavra de Deus e a praticam”.
Jesus acalma a tempestade
22 Certo dia, Jesus disse a seus discípulos: “Vamos para o outro lado do mar”. Assim, entraram num barco e partiram. 23 Durante a travessia, Jesus caiu no sono. Logo, porém, veio sobre o mar uma forte tempestade. O barco começou a se encher de água, colocando-os em grande perigo.
24 Os discípulos foram acordá-lo, clamando: “Mestre, Mestre, vamos morrer!”.
Quando Jesus despertou, repreendeu o vento e as ondas violentas. A tempestade parou, e tudo se acalmou. 25 Então ele lhes perguntou: “Onde está a sua fé?”.
Admirados e temerosos, os discípulos diziam entre si: “Quem é este homem? Quando ele ordena, até os ventos e o mar lhe obedecem!”.
Jesus exerce autoridade sobre demônios
26 Então chegaram à região dos gadarenos,[c] do outro lado do mar da Galileia. 27 Quando Jesus desembarcou, um homem possuído por demônios veio ao seu encontro. Fazia muito tempo que ele não tinha casa nem roupas e vivia num cemitério fora da cidade.
28 Assim que viu Jesus, gritou e caiu diante dele. Então disse em alta voz: “Por que vem me importunar, Jesus, Filho do Deus Altíssimo? Suplico que não me atormente!”. 29 Pois Jesus já havia ordenado que o espírito impuro saísse dele. Esse espírito tinha dominado o homem em várias ocasiões. Mesmo quando era colocado sob guarda, com os pés e as mãos acorrentados, ele quebrava as correntes e, sob controle do demônio, corria para o deserto.
30 Jesus lhe perguntou: “Qual é o seu nome?”.
“Legião”, respondeu ele, pois havia muitos demônios dentro do homem. 31 E imploravam que Jesus não os mandasse para o abismo.[d]
32 Ali perto, uma grande manada de porcos pastava na encosta de uma colina, e os demônios suplicaram que ele os deixasse entrar nos porcos.
Jesus lhes deu permissão. 33 Os demônios saíram do homem e entraram nos porcos, e toda a manada se atirou pela encosta íngreme para dentro do mar e se afogou.
34 Quando os que cuidavam dos porcos viram isso, fugiram para uma cidade próxima e para seus arredores, espalhando a notícia. 35 O povo correu para ver o que havia ocorrido. Uma multidão se juntou ao redor de Jesus, e eles viram o homem que havia sido liberto dos demônios. Estava sentado aos pés de Jesus, vestido e em perfeito juízo, e todos tiveram medo. 36 Os que presenciaram os acontecimentos contaram aos demais como o homem possuído por demônios tinha sido curado. 37 Todo o povo da região dos gadarenos suplicou que Jesus fosse embora, pois ficaram muito assustados.
Então ele voltou ao barco e partiu. 38 O homem que tinha sido liberto dos demônios suplicou para ir com ele, mas Jesus o mandou para casa, dizendo: 39 “Volte para sua família e conte a eles tudo que Deus fez por você”. E o homem foi pela cidade inteira, anunciando tudo que Jesus tinha feito por ele.
Jesus cura em resposta à fé
40 Do outro lado do mar, as multidões receberam Jesus com alegria, pois o estavam esperando. 41 Então um homem chamado Jairo, um dos líderes da sinagoga local, veio e se prostrou aos pés de Jesus, suplicando que ele fosse à sua casa. 42 Sua única filha, de cerca de doze anos, estava à beira da morte.
Jesus o acompanhou, cercado pela multidão. 43 Uma mulher no meio do povo sofria havia doze anos de uma hemorragia,[e] sem encontrar cura. 44 Ela se aproximou por trás de Jesus e tocou na borda de seu manto. No mesmo instante, a hemorragia parou.
45 “Quem tocou em mim?”, perguntou Jesus.
Todos negaram, e Pedro disse: “Mestre, a multidão toda se aperta em volta do senhor”.
46 Jesus, no entanto, disse: “Alguém certamente tocou em mim, pois senti que de mim saiu poder”. 47 Quando a mulher percebeu que não poderia permanecer despercebida, começou a tremer e caiu de joelhos diante dele. Todos a ouviram explicar por que havia tocado nele e como havia sido curada de imediato. 48 Então ele disse: “Filha, sua fé a curou. Vá em paz”.
49 Enquanto Jesus ainda falava com a mulher, chegou um mensageiro da casa de Jairo, o líder da sinagoga, a quem disse: “Sua filha morreu. Não incomode mais o mestre”.
50 Ao ouvir isso, Jesus disse a Jairo: “Não tenha medo. Apenas creia, e ela será curada”.
51 Quando chegaram à casa de Jairo, Jesus não deixou que ninguém o acompanhasse, exceto Pedro, João, Tiago e o pai e a mãe da menina. 52 A casa estava cheia de gente chorando e se lamentando, mas ele disse: “Parem de chorar! Ela não está morta; está apenas dormindo”.
53 A multidão riu dele, pois todos sabiam que ela havia morrido. 54 Então Jesus a tomou pela mão e disse em voz alta: “Menina, levante-se!”. 55 Naquele momento, ela voltou à vida[f] e levantou-se de imediato. Então Jesus ordenou que dessem alguma coisa para ela comer. 56 Os pais dela ficaram maravilhados, mas Jesus insistiu que não contassem a ninguém o que havia acontecido.

The Parable of the Sower(A)
8 After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God.(B) The Twelve were with him, 2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene)(C) from whom seven demons had come out; 3 Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s(D) household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.
4 While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable: 5 “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds ate it up. 6 Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.”
When he said this, he called out, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”(E)
9 His disciples asked him what this parable meant. 10 He said, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you,(F) but to others I speak in parables, so that,
11 “This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.(H) 12 Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. 13 Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away.(I) 14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches(J) and pleasures, and they do not mature. 15 But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.
A Lamp on a Stand
16 “No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.(K) 17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.(L) 18 Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them.”(M)
Jesus’ Mother and Brothers(N)
19 Now Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. 20 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers(O) are standing outside, wanting to see you.”
21 He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.”(P)
Jesus Calms the Storm(Q)(R)
22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.
24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master,(S) we’re going to drown!”
He got up and rebuked(T) the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.(U) 25 “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples.
In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”
Jesus Restores a Demon-Possessed Man(V)(W)
26 They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes,[b] which is across the lake from Galilee. 27 When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me,(X) Jesus, Son of the Most High God?(Y) I beg you, don’t torture me!” 29 For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.
30 Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”
“Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. 31 And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.(Z)
32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. 33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake(AA) and was drowned.
34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, 35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet,(AB) dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed(AC) man had been cured. 37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them,(AD) because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left.
38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.
Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(AE)
40 Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. 41 Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader,(AF) came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house 42 because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying.
As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. 43 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding(AG) for twelve years,[c] but no one could heal her. 44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak,(AH) and immediately her bleeding stopped.
45 “Who touched me?” Jesus asked.
When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master,(AI) the people are crowding and pressing against you.”
46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me;(AJ) I know that power has gone out from me.”(AK)
47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. 48 Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you.(AL) Go in peace.”(AM)
49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader.(AN) “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.”
50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”
51 When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James,(AO) and the child’s father and mother. 52 Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning(AP) for her. “Stop wailing,” Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.”(AQ)
53 They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But he took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!”(AR) 55 Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. 56 Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.(AS)

Women Who Followed Jesus
8 Soon afterward Jesus began a tour of the nearby towns and villages, preaching and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom of God. He took his twelve disciples with him, 2 along with some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases. Among them were Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons; 3 Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s business manager; Susanna; and many others who were contributing from their own resources to support Jesus and his disciples.
Parable of the Farmer Scattering Seed
4 One day Jesus told a story in the form of a parable to a large crowd that had gathered from many towns to hear him: 5 “A farmer went out to plant his seed. As he scattered it across his field, some seed fell on a footpath, where it was stepped on, and the birds ate it. 6 Other seed fell among rocks. It began to grow, but the plant soon wilted and died for lack of moisture. 7 Other seed fell among thorns that grew up with it and choked out the tender plants. 8 Still other seed fell on fertile soil. This seed grew and produced a crop that was a hundred times as much as had been planted!” When he had said this, he called out, “Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”
9 His disciples asked him what this parable meant. 10 He replied, “You are permitted to understand the secrets[a] of the Kingdom of God. But I use parables to teach the others so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled:
‘When they look, they won’t really see.
When they hear, they won’t understand.’[b]
11 “This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is God’s word. 12 The seeds that fell on the footpath represent those who hear the message, only to have the devil come and take it away from their hearts and prevent them from believing and being saved. 13 The seeds on the rocky soil represent those who hear the message and receive it with joy. But since they don’t have deep roots, they believe for a while, then they fall away when they face temptation. 14 The seeds that fell among the thorns represent those who hear the message, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the cares and riches and pleasures of this life. And so they never grow into maturity. 15 And the seeds that fell on the good soil represent honest, good-hearted people who hear God’s word, cling to it, and patiently produce a huge harvest.
Parable of the Lamp
16 “No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a bowl or hides it under a bed. A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light can be seen by all who enter the house. 17 For all that is secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be brought to light and made known to all.
18 “So pay attention to how you hear. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what they think they understand will be taken away from them.”
The True Family of Jesus
19 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they couldn’t get to him because of the crowd. 20 Someone told Jesus, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, and they want to see you.”
21 Jesus replied, “My mother and my brothers are all those who hear God’s word and obey it.”
Jesus Calms the Storm
22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and started out. 23 As they sailed across, Jesus settled down for a nap. But soon a fierce storm came down on the lake. The boat was filling with water, and they were in real danger.
24 The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!”
When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and the raging waves. Suddenly the storm stopped and all was calm. 25 Then he asked them, “Where is your faith?”
The disciples were terrified and amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “When he gives a command, even the wind and waves obey him!”
Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Man
26 So they arrived in the region of the Gerasenes,[c] across the lake from Galilee. 27 As Jesus was climbing out of the boat, a man who was possessed by demons came out to meet him. For a long time he had been homeless and naked, living in the tombs outside the town.
28 As soon as he saw Jesus, he shrieked and fell down in front of him. Then he screamed, “Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Please, I beg you, don’t torture me!” 29 For Jesus had already commanded the evil[d] spirit to come out of him. This spirit had often taken control of the man. Even when he was placed under guard and put in chains and shackles, he simply broke them and rushed out into the wilderness, completely under the demon’s power.
30 Jesus demanded, “What is your name?”
“Legion,” he replied, for he was filled with many demons. 31 The demons kept begging Jesus not to send them into the bottomless pit.[e]
32 There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside nearby, and the demons begged him to let them enter into the pigs.
So Jesus gave them permission. 33 Then the demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the entire herd plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned.
34 When the herdsmen saw it, they fled to the nearby town and the surrounding countryside, spreading the news as they ran. 35 People rushed out to see what had happened. A crowd soon gathered around Jesus, and they saw the man who had been freed from the demons. He was sitting at Jesus’ feet, fully clothed and perfectly sane, and they were all afraid. 36 Then those who had seen what happened told the others how the demon-possessed man had been healed. 37 And all the people in the region of the Gerasenes begged Jesus to go away and leave them alone, for a great wave of fear swept over them.
So Jesus returned to the boat and left, crossing back to the other side of the lake. 38 The man who had been freed from the demons begged to go with him. But Jesus sent him home, saying, 39 “No, go back to your family, and tell them everything God has done for you.” So he went all through the town proclaiming the great things Jesus had done for him.
Jesus Heals in Response to Faith
40 On the other side of the lake the crowds welcomed Jesus, because they had been waiting for him. 41 Then a man named Jairus, a leader of the local synagogue, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come home with him. 42 His only daughter,[f] who was about twelve years old, was dying.
As Jesus went with him, he was surrounded by the crowds. 43 A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding,[g] and she could find no cure. 44 Coming up behind Jesus, she touched the fringe of his robe. Immediately, the bleeding stopped.
45 “Who touched me?” Jesus asked.
Everyone denied it, and Peter said, “Master, this whole crowd is pressing up against you.”
46 But Jesus said, “Someone deliberately touched me, for I felt healing power go out from me.” 47 When the woman realized that she could not stay hidden, she began to tremble and fell to her knees in front of him. The whole crowd heard her explain why she had touched him and that she had been immediately healed. 48 “Daughter,” he said to her, “your faith has made you well. Go in peace.”
49 While he was still speaking to her, a messenger arrived from the home of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue. He told him, “Your daughter is dead. There’s no use troubling the Teacher now.”
50 But when Jesus heard what had happened, he said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith, and she will be healed.”
51 When they arrived at the house, Jesus wouldn’t let anyone go in with him except Peter, John, James, and the little girl’s father and mother. 52 The house was filled with people weeping and wailing, but he said, “Stop the weeping! She isn’t dead; she’s only asleep.”
53 But the crowd laughed at him because they all knew she had died. 54 Then Jesus took her by the hand and said in a loud voice, “My child, get up!” 55 And at that moment her life[h] returned, and she immediately stood up! Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. 56 Her parents were overwhelmed, but Jesus insisted that they not tell anyone what had happened.
