João Batista Prepara o Caminho(A)

3 No décimo quinto ano do reinado de Tibério César, quando Pôncio Pilatos era governador da Judéia; Herodes, tetrarca[a] da Galiléia; seu irmão Filipe, tetrarca da Ituréia e Traconites; e Lisânias, tetrarca de Abilene; 2 Anás e Caifás exerciam o sumo sacerdócio. Foi nesse ano que veio a palavra do Senhor a João, filho de Zacarias, no deserto. 3 Ele percorreu toda a região próxima ao Jordão, pregando um batismo de arrependimento para o perdão dos pecados. 4 Como está escrito no livro das palavras de Isaías, o profeta:

“Voz do que clama no deserto:
    ‘Preparem[b] o caminho
    para o Senhor,
façam veredas retas
    para ele.
5 Todo vale será aterrado
e todas as montanhas
    e colinas, niveladas.
As estradas tortuosas
    serão endireitadas
e os caminhos acidentados, aplanados.
6 E toda a humanidade[c]
    verá a salvação de Deus’”[d].

7 João dizia às multidões que saíam para serem batizadas por ele: “Raça de víboras! Quem lhes deu a idéia de fugir da ira que se aproxima? 8 Dêem frutos que mostrem o arrependimento. E não comecem a dizer a si mesmos: ‘Abraão é nosso pai’. Pois eu lhes digo que destas pedras Deus pode fazer surgir filhos a Abraão. 9 O machado já está posto à raiz das árvores, e toda árvore que não der bom fruto será cortada e lançada ao fogo”.

10 “O que devemos fazer então?”, perguntavam as multidões.

11 João respondia: “Quem tem duas túnicas dê uma a quem não tem nenhuma; e quem tem comida faça o mesmo”.

12 Alguns publicanos[e] também vieram para serem batizados. Eles perguntaram: “Mestre, o que devemos fazer?”

13 Ele respondeu: “Não cobrem nada além do que lhes foi estipulado”.

14 Então alguns soldados lhe perguntaram: “E nós, o que devemos fazer?”

Ele respondeu: “Não pratiquem extorsão nem acusem ninguém falsamente; contentem-se com o seu salário”.

15 O povo estava em grande expectativa, questionando em seu coração se acaso João não seria o Cristo. 16 João respondeu a todos: “Eu os batizo com[f] água. Mas virá alguém mais poderoso do que eu, tanto que não sou digno nem de desamarrar as correias das suas sandálias. Ele os batizará com o Espírito Santo e com fogo. 17 Ele traz a pá em sua mão, a fim de limpar sua eira e juntar o trigo em seu celeiro; mas queimará a palha com fogo que nunca se apaga”. 18 E com muitas outras palavras João exortava o povo e lhe pregava as boas novas.

19 Todavia, quando João repreendeu Herodes, o tetrarca, por causa de Herodias, mulher do próprio irmão de Herodes, e por todas as outras coisas más que ele tinha feito, 20 Herodes acrescentou a todas elas a de colocar João na prisão.

O Batismo e a Genealogia de Jesus(B)

21 Quando todo o povo estava sendo batizado, também Jesus o foi. E, enquanto ele estava orando, o céu se abriu 22 e o Espírito Santo desceu sobre ele em forma corpórea, como pomba. Então veio do céu uma voz: “Tu és o meu Filho amado; em ti me agrado”.

23 Jesus tinha cerca de trinta anos de idade quando começou seu ministério. Ele era, como se pensava, filho de José,

filho de Eli, 24 filho de Matate,

filho de Levi, filho de Melqui,

filho de Janai, filho de José,

25 filho de Matatias,

filho de Amós,

filho de Naum, filho de Esli,

filho de Nagai,

26 filho de Máate,

A mensagem de João Batista

(Mt 3.1-12; Mc 1.1-8; Jo 1.19-28)

3 Era o décimo-quinto ano do reinado do Imperador Tibério. Pôncio Pilatos era governador da Judeia e Herodes governador da Galileia. Filipe, irmão de Herodes, governava as regiões de Itureia e Traconites, e Lisânias governava Abilene. 2 Anás e Caifás eram os sumos sacerdotes. Foi nessa época que Deus falou a João, filho de Zacarias, no deserto.

3 João, então, andou por toda a região do rio Jordão, anunciando a mensagem de Deus. Ele falava para as pessoas se batizarem. De esta forma, elas iriam mostrar que queriam mudar o seu comportamento, e então os seus pecados iriam ser perdoados. 4 Isto aconteceu como está escrito no livro do profeta Isaías:

“Uma voz clama no deserto:
Preparem o caminho para o Senhor,
    e abram estradas retas para ele passar.
5 Todos os vales serão aterrados
    e todos os montes e colinas serão aplanados.
Os caminhos tortos serão endireitados
    e as ruas esburacadas serão alisadas.
6 E todas as pessoas verão a salvação que vem de Deus”.(A)

7 João dizia às multidões que vinham para serem batizadas por ele:

—Raça de cobras venenosas! Quem ensinou a vocês como escapar do castigo que Deus vai mandar? 8 Façam coisas que mostrem que vocês mudaram o seu comportamento e não comecem a dizer entre vocês mesmos: “Somos da família de Abraão”. Pois eu lhes digo que até destas pedras Deus é capaz de fazer parentes que vêm da família de Abraão! 9 O machado já está pronto para cortar as árvores[a] pela raiz. Toda árvore que não produz bom fruto será cortada e jogada no fogo. 10 E a multidão perguntou a ele:

—Então, o que devemos fazer?

11 Ele lhes respondeu:

—Aquele que tem duas túnicas deve dar uma a quem não tem nenhuma. E aquele que tem comida deve repartir com quem não tem.

12 Alguns cobradores de impostos também vieram para serem batizados e perguntaram a João:

—Mestre, o que devemos fazer?

13 E ele lhes respondeu:

—Não cobrem mais do que a lei manda.

14 Alguns soldados lhe perguntaram:

—E o que nós devemos fazer?

Ele lhes disse:

—Não tirem dinheiro de ninguém nem acusem ninguém injustamente. Contentem-se com o seu próprio salário.

15 O povo estava cheio de expectativa e perguntava a si mesmo se João não seria o Cristo. 16 João respondeu assim a todos:

—Eu batizo vocês em água, mas virá alguém que é mais poderoso do que eu e eu não sou digno nem de desamarrar as sandálias dele. Ele batizará com o Espírito Santo e com fogo. 17 Ele tem uma pá nas mãos para separar o trigo da palha.[b] O trigo será juntado em seu depósito, mas a palha será queimada com um fogo que nunca se apaga.

18 E João anunciava as Boas Novas ao povo com muitas outras admoestações.

19 (Mas depois João falou contra Herodes, o governador, censurando-o por causa de seu relacionamento com Herodias, mulher do seu irmão, e por todas as outras maldades que ele tinha feito. 20 Herodes então, além de tudo isso, fez uma maldade ainda pior: mandou prender a João.)

O batismo de Jesus

(Mt 3.13-17; Mc 1.9-11)

21 Aconteceu que, quando todas as pessoas estavam sendo batizadas, Jesus também foi batizado. Enquanto ele estava orando, o céu se abriu 22 e o Espírito Santo desceu sobre ele como pomba. E uma voz vinda do céu disse:

—Você é o meu Filho querido. Você me dá muita alegria.

23 Jesus tinha cerca de trinta anos quando começou o seu trabalho. Ele era, conforme pensavam, filho de José.

2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

4 As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;

6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

7 Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

9 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

10 And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?

11 He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.

12 Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?

13 And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.

14 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.

15 And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;

16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

18 And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.

19 But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,

20 Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.

21 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate(C) was governor of Judea, Herod(D) tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— 2 during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,(E) the word of God came to John(F) son of Zechariah(G) in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.(H) 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:

“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
    make straight paths for him.
5 Every valley shall be filled in,
    every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
    the rough ways smooth.
6 And all people will see God’s salvation.’”[a](I)

7 John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers!(J) Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?(K) 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’(L) For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”(M)

10 “What should we do then?”(N) the crowd asked.

11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”(O)

12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized.(P) “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”

13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,”(Q) he told them.

14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”

He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely(R)—be content with your pay.”

15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John(S) might possibly be the Messiah.(T) 16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with[b] water.(U) But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with[c] the Holy Spirit and fire.(V) 17 His winnowing fork(W) is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”(X) 18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.

19 But when John rebuked Herod(Y) the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, 20 Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.(Z)
