Nacimiento de Jesús
2 Por aquellos días, Augusto César decretó que se levantara un censo en todo el Imperio romano.[a] 2 Este primer censo se efectuó cuando Cirenio gobernaba en Siria. 3 Así que iban todos a inscribirse, cada cual a su propio pueblo.
4 También José, que era descendiente del rey David, subió de Nazaret, ciudad de Galilea, a Judea. Fue a Belén, la Ciudad de David, 5 para inscribirse junto con María, que estaba comprometida para casarse con él. Ella se encontraba embarazada 6 y mientras estaban allí se le cumplió el tiempo. 7 Así que dio a luz a su hijo primogénito. Lo envolvió en pañales y lo acostó en un pesebre, porque no había lugar para ellos en la posada.
Los pastores y los ángeles
8 En esa misma región había unos pastores que pasaban la noche en el campo, turnándose para cuidar su rebaño. 9 Sucedió que un ángel del Señor se les apareció. La gloria del Señor los envolvió en su luz y se llenaron de temor. 10 Pero el ángel dijo: «No tengan miedo. Miren que traigo buenas noticias que serán motivo de mucha alegría para todo el pueblo. 11 Hoy ha nacido en la Ciudad de David un Salvador, que es Cristo el Señor. 12 Esto les servirá de señal: Encontrarán a un niño envuelto en pañales y acostado en un pesebre».
13 De repente apareció una multitud de ángeles del cielo, que alababan a Dios y decían:
14 «Gloria a Dios en las alturas,
y en la tierra paz a los que gozan de su buena voluntad».[b]
15 Cuando los ángeles se fueron al cielo, los pastores se dijeron unos a otros: «Vamos a Belén, a ver esto que ha pasado y que el Señor nos ha dado a conocer».
16 Así que fueron de prisa y encontraron a María, a José y al niño que estaba acostado en el pesebre. 17 Cuando vieron al niño, contaron lo que les habían dicho acerca de él 18 y cuantos lo oyeron se asombraron de lo que los pastores decían. 19 María, por su parte, guardaba todas estas cosas en su corazón y meditaba acerca de ellas. 20 Los pastores regresaron glorificando y alabando a Dios por lo que habían visto y oído, pues todo sucedió tal como se les había dicho.
Presentación de Jesús en el Templo
21 Cuando se cumplieron los ocho días y fueron a circuncidarlo, lo llamaron Jesús, nombre que el ángel le había puesto antes de que fuera concebido.
22 Así mismo, cuando se cumplió el tiempo en que, según la Ley de Moisés, ellos debían purificarse, José y María llevaron al niño a Jerusalén para presentarlo al Señor. 23 Así cumplieron con lo que en la Ley del Señor está escrito: «Todo varón primogénito será consagrado[c] al Señor».[d] 24 También ofrecieron un sacrificio conforme a lo que la Ley del Señor dice: «un par de tórtolas o dos pichones de paloma».[e]
25 Ahora bien, en Jerusalén había un hombre llamado Simeón, que era justo y devoto, y aguardaba con esperanza la consolación[f] de Israel. El Espíritu Santo estaba con él 26 y le había revelado que no moriría sin antes ver al Cristo del Señor. 27 Movido por el Espíritu, fue al Templo. Cuando al niño Jesús lo llevaron sus padres para cumplir con la costumbre establecida por la Ley, 28 Simeón lo tomó en sus brazos y bendijo a Dios:
29 «Según tu palabra, Soberano Señor,
ya puedes despedir a tu siervo en paz.
30 Porque han visto mis ojos tu salvación,
31 que has preparado a la vista de todos los pueblos:
32 luz que ilumina a las naciones
y gloria de tu pueblo Israel».
33 El padre y la madre del niño se quedaron maravillados por lo que se decía de él. 34 Simeón les dio su bendición y dijo a María, la madre de Jesús: «Este niño está destinado a causar la caída y el levantamiento de muchos en Israel, y a crear mucha oposición,[g] 35 a fin de que se manifiesten las intenciones de muchos corazones. En cuanto a ti, una espada te atravesará el alma».
36 Había también una profetisa, Ana, hija de Penuel, de la tribu de Aser. Era muy anciana; casada de joven había vivido con su esposo siete años 37 y luego permaneció viuda hasta la edad de ochenta y cuatro.[h] Nunca salía del Templo, sino que día y noche adoraba a Dios con ayunos y oraciones. 38 Llegando en ese mismo momento, Ana dio gracias a Dios y comenzó a hablar del niño a todos los que esperaban la redención de Jerusalén.
39 Después de haber cumplido con todo lo que exigía la Ley del Señor, José y María regresaron a Galilea, a su propio pueblo de Nazaret. 40 El niño crecía y se fortalecía; se llenaba de sabiduría y la gracia de Dios lo acompañaba.
El niño Jesús en el Templo
41 Los padres de Jesús subían todos los años a Jerusalén para la fiesta de la Pascua. 42 Cuando cumplió doce años, fueron allá según era la costumbre. 43 Terminada la fiesta, emprendieron el viaje de regreso, pero el niño Jesús se había quedado en Jerusalén, sin que sus padres se dieran cuenta. 44 Ellos, pensando que él estaba entre el grupo de viajeros, hicieron un día de camino mientras lo buscaban entre los parientes y conocidos. 45 Al no encontrarlo, volvieron a Jerusalén en busca de él. 46 Al cabo de tres días lo encontraron en el Templo, sentado entre los maestros, escuchándolos y haciéndoles preguntas. 47 Todos los que le oían se asombraban de su inteligencia y de sus respuestas. 48 Cuando lo vieron sus padres, se quedaron admirados.
—Hijo, ¿por qué te has portado así con nosotros? —dijo su madre—. ¡Mira que tu padre y yo te hemos estado buscando angustiados!
49 Él respondió:
—¿Por qué me buscaban? ¿No sabían que tengo que estar ocupado en los asuntos de mi Padre?
50 Pero ellos no entendieron lo que decía.
51 Así que Jesús bajó con sus padres a Nazaret y vivió sujeto a ellos. Y su madre conservaba todas estas cosas en el corazón. 52 Jesús siguió creciendo en sabiduría y estatura, y cada vez más gozaba del favor de Dios y de la gente.

2 En það bar til um þessar mundir, að boð kom frá Ágústus keisara, að skrásetja skyldi alla heimsbyggðina.
2 Þetta var fyrsta skrásetningin og var gjörð þá er Kýreníus var landstjóri á Sýrlandi.
3 Fóru þá allir til að láta skrásetja sig, hver til sinnar borgar.
4 Þá fór og Jósef úr Galíleu frá borginni Nasaret upp til Júdeu, til borgar Davíðs, sem heitir Betlehem, en hann var af ætt og kyni Davíðs,
5 að láta skrásetja sig ásamt Maríu heitkonu sinni, sem var þunguð.
6 En meðan þau voru þar, kom sá tími, er hún skyldi verða léttari.
7 Fæddi hún þá son sinn frumgetinn, vafði hann reifum og lagði hann í jötu, af því að eigi var rúm handa þeim í gistihúsi.
8 En í sömu byggð voru hirðar úti í haga og gættu um nóttina hjarðar sinnar.
9 Og engill Drottins stóð hjá þeim, og dýrð Drottins ljómaði kringum þá. Þeir urðu mjög hræddir,
10 en engillinn sagði við þá: "Verið óhræddir, því sjá, ég boða yður mikinn fögnuð, sem veitast mun öllum lýðnum:
11 Yður er í dag frelsari fæddur, sem er Kristur Drottinn, í borg Davíðs.
12 Og hafið þetta til marks: Þér munuð finna ungbarn reifað og lagt í jötu."
13 Og í sömu svipan var með englinum fjöldi himneskra hersveita, sem lofuðu Guð og sögðu:
14 Dýrð sé Guði í upphæðum, og friður á jörðu með mönnum, sem hann hefur velþóknun á.
15 Þegar englarnir voru farnir frá þeim til himins, sögðu hirðarnir sín á milli: "Förum beint til Betlehem að sjá það, sem gjörst hefur og Drottinn hefur kunngjört oss."
16 Og þeir fóru með skyndi og fundu Maríu og Jósef og ungbarnið, sem lá í jötu.
17 Þegar þeir sáu það, skýrðu þeir frá því, er þeim hafði verið sagt um barn þetta.
18 Og allir, sem heyrðu, undruðust það, er hirðarnir sögðu þeim.
19 En María geymdi allt þetta í hjarta sér og hugleiddi það.
20 Og hirðarnir sneru aftur og vegsömuðu Guð og lofuðu hann fyrir það, sem þeir höfðu heyrt og séð, en allt var það eins og þeim hafði verið sagt.
21 Þegar átta dagar voru liðnir, skyldi umskera hann, og var hann látinn heita Jesús, eins og engillinn nefndi hann, áður en hann var getinn í móðurlífi.
22 En er hreinsunardagar þeirra voru úti eftir lögmáli Móse, fóru þau með hann upp til Jerúsalem til að færa hann Drottni, _
23 en svo er ritað í lögmáli Drottins: "Allt karlkyns, er fyrst fæðist af móðurlífi, skal helgað Drottni," _
24 og til að færa fórn eins og segir í lögmáli Drottins, "tvær turtildúfur eða tvær ungar dúfur."
25 Þá var í Jerúsalem maður, er Símeon hét. Hann var réttlátur og guðrækinn og vænti huggunar Ísraels, og yfir honum var heilagur andi.
26 Honum hafði heilagur andi vitrað, að hann skyldi ekki dauðann sjá, fyrr en hann hefði séð Krist Drottins.
27 Hann kom að tillaðan andans í helgidóminn. Og er foreldrarnir færðu þangað sveininn Jesú til að fara með hann eftir venju lögmálsins,
28 tók Símeon hann í fangið, lofaði Guð og sagði:
29 "Nú lætur þú, Drottinn, þjón þinn í friði fara, eins og þú hefur heitið mér,
30 því að augu mín hafa séð hjálpræði þitt,
31 sem þú hefur fyrirbúið í augsýn allra lýða,
32 ljós til opinberunar heiðingjum og til vegsemdar lýð þínum Ísrael."
33 Faðir hans og móðir undruðust það, er sagt var um hann.
34 En Símeon blessaði þau og sagði við Maríu móður hans: "Þessi sveinn er settur til falls og til viðreisnar mörgum í Ísrael og til tákns, sem móti verður mælt,
35 og sjálf munt þú sverði níst í sálu þinni. Þannig munu hugsanir margra hjartna verða augljósar."
36 Og þar var Anna spákona Fanúelsdóttir af ætt Assers, kona háöldruð. Hafði hún lifað sjö ár með manni sínum frá því hún var mær
37 og síðan verið ekkja fram á áttatíu og fjögra ára aldur. Hún vék eigi úr helgidóminum, en þjónaði Guði nótt og dag með föstum og bænahaldi.
38 Hún kom að á sömu stundu og lofaði Guð. Og hún talaði um barnið við alla, sem væntu lausnar Jerúsalem.
39 Og er þau höfðu lokið öllu eftir lögmáli Drottins, sneru þau aftur til Galíleu, til borgar sinnar Nasaret.
40 En sveinninn óx og styrktist, fylltur visku, og náð Guðs var yfir honum.
41 Foreldrar hans ferðuðust ár hvert til Jerúsalem á páskahátíðinni.
42 Og þegar hann var tólf ára gamall, fóru þau upp þangað eins og siður var á hátíðinni.
43 Þau voru þar út hátíðisdagana. En þegar þau sneru heimleiðis, varð sveinninn Jesús eftir í Jerúsalem, og vissu foreldrar hans það eigi.
44 Þau hugðu, að hann væri með samferðafólkinu, og fóru eina dagleið og leituðu hans meðal frænda og kunningja.
45 En þau fundu hann ekki og sneru þá aftur til Jerúsalem og leituðu hans.
46 Eftir þrjá daga fundu þau hann í helgidóminum. Þar sat hann mitt á meðal lærifeðranna, hlýddi á þá og spurði þá.
47 En alla, sem heyrðu til hans, furðaði stórum á skilningi hans og andsvörum.
48 Og er þau sáu hann þar, brá þeim mjög, og móðir hans sagði við hann: "Barn, hví gjörðir þú okkur þetta? Við faðir þinn höfum leitað þín harmþrungin."
49 Og hann sagði við þau: "Hvers vegna voruð þið að leita að mér? Vissuð þið ekki, að mér ber að vera í húsi föður míns?"
50 En þau skildu ekki það er hann talaði við þau.
51 Og hann fór heim með þeim og kom til Nasaret og var þeim hlýðinn. En móðir hans geymdi allt þetta í hjarta sér.
52 Og Jesús þroskaðist að visku og vexti, og náð hjá Guði og mönnum.

2 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.
2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.
20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.
21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called Jesus, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
22 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;
23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)
24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.
25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.
26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.
27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,
28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,
29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:
30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.
33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.
34 And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;
35 (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.
36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;
37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.
38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.
39 And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.
40 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.
41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.
42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.
43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.
44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.
45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.
46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.
47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?
50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
