19 ¶ Y habiendo entrado Jesús, iba pasando por Jericó;
2 y he aquí un varón llamado Zaqueo, el cual era el principal de los publicanos, y era rico;
3 Y procuraba ver quién era Jesús; mas no podía a causa de la multitud, porque era pequeño de estatura.
4 Y corriendo delante, se subió a un árbol sicómoro para verle; porque había de pasar por allí.
5 Y como vino a aquel lugar Jesús, mirando, le vio, y le dijo: Zaqueo, date prisa, desciende, porque hoy es necesario que pose en tu casa.
6 Entonces él descendió aprisa, y le recibió gozoso.
7 Y viendo esto, todos murmuraban, diciendo que había entrado a posar con un hombre pecador.
8 Entonces Zaqueo, puesto en pie, dijo al Señor: He aquí, Señor, la mitad de mis bienes doy a los pobres; y si en algo he defraudado a alguno, se lo devuelvo cuadruplicado.
9 Y el Señor le dijo: Porque hoy ha sido hecha salud a esta casa; por cuanto él también es hijo de Abraham.
10 Porque el Hijo del hombre vino a buscar y a salvar lo que se había perdido.
11 ¶ Y oyendo ellos estas cosas, prosiguió Jesús y dijo una parábola, por cuanto estaba cerca de Jerusalén, y porque pensaban que luego había de ser manifestado el Reino de Dios.
12 Dijo pues: Un hombre noble se fue a una provincia lejos, para tomar para sí un reino, y volver.
13 Mas llamados diez esclavos suyos, les dio diez minas, y les dijo: Negociad entre tanto que vengo.
14 Pero sus ciudadanos le aborrecían, y enviaron tras de él una embajada, diciendo: No queremos que éste reine sobre nosotros.
15 Y aconteció, que vuelto él, habiendo tomado el reino, mandó llamar a sí a aquellos esclavos a los cuales había dado el dinero, para saber lo que había negociado cada uno.
16 Y vino el primero, diciendo: Señor, tu mina ha ganado diez minas.
17 Y él le dice: Está bien, buen esclavo; pues que en lo poco has sido fiel, tendrás potestad sobre diez ciudades.
18 Y vino el segundo, diciendo: Señor, tu mina ha hecho cinco minas.
19 Y también a éste dijo: Tú también sé sobre cinco ciudades.
20 Y vino otro, diciendo: Señor, he aquí tu mina, la cual he tenido guardada en un pañuelo;
21 porque tuve miedo de ti, que eres hombre recio; tomas lo que no pusiste, y siegas lo que no sembraste.
22 Entonces él le dijo: Mal esclavo, de tu boca te juzgo. Sabías que yo era hombre recio, que quito lo que no puse, y que siego lo que no sembré;
23 ¿por qué, no diste mi dinero al banco, y yo viniendo lo recibiera con el logro?
24 Y dijo a los que estaban presentes: Quitadle la mina, y dadla al que tiene las diez minas.
25 Y ellos le dijeron: Señor, tiene diez minas.
26 Pues yo os digo que a cualquiera que tuviere, le será dado; mas al que no tuviere, aun lo que tiene le será quitado.
27 Y también a aquellos mis enemigos que no querían que yo reinara sobre ellos, traedlos acá, y degolladlos delante de mí.
28 ¶ Y dicho esto, iba delante subiendo a Jerusalén.
29 Y aconteció, que llegando cerca de Betfagé, y de Betania, al monte que se llama de las Olivas, envió dos de sus discípulos,
30 diciendo: Id a la aldea de enfrente; en la cual cuando entrareis, hallaréis un pollino atado, en el que ningún hombre se ha sentado jamás; desatadlo, y traedlo.
31 Y si alguien os preguntare, ¿por qué lo desatáis? Le responderéis así: Porque el Señor lo necesita.
32 Y fueron los que habían sido enviados, y hallaron como les dijo.
33 Y desatando ellos el pollino, sus dueños les dijeron: ¿Por qué desatáis el pollino?
34 Y ellos dijeron: Porque el Señor lo necesita.
35 Y lo trajeron a Jesús; y habiendo echado sus vestidos sobre el pollino, subieron a Jesús encima.
36 Y yendo él, tendían sus vestidos por el camino.
37 Y cuando llegaron ya cerca de la bajada del monte de las Olivas, toda la multitud de los discípulos, gozándose, comenzaron a alabar a Dios a gran voz por todas las maravillas que habían visto,
38 diciendo: ¡Bendito el Rey que viene en el nombre del Señor; paz en el cielo, y gloria en lo altísimo!
39 Entonces algunos de los fariseos de la multitud, le dijeron: Maestro, reprende a tus discípulos.
40 Y él respondiendo, les dijo: Os digo que si éstos callaran, las piedras clamarían.
41 ¶ Y como llegó cerca viendo la ciudad, lloró sobre ella,
42 diciendo: ¡Oh si también tú conocieras, a lo menos en este tu día, lo que toca a tu paz! Mas ahora está encubierto a tus ojos.
43 Porque vendrán días sobre ti, que tus enemigos te cercarán con baluarte, y te pondrán cerco, y de todas partes te pondrán en estrecho,
44 y te derribarán a tierra, y a tus hijos dentro de ti; y no dejarán sobre ti piedra sobre piedra; por cuanto no conociste el tiempo de tu visitación.
45 Y entrando en el Templo, comenzó a echar fuera a todos los que vendían y compraban en él.
46 Diciéndoles: Escrito está: Mi Casa, Casa de oración es; mas vosotros la habéis hecho cueva de ladrones.
47 Y enseñaba cada día en el Templo; mas los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y los escribas, y los principales del pueblo procuraban matarle.
48 Y no hallaban qué hacerle, porque todo el pueblo estaba suspenso oyéndole.

Zaqueo, el recaudador de impuestos
19 Jesús llegó a Jericó y comenzó a cruzar la ciudad. 2 Resulta que había allí un hombre llamado Zaqueo, jefe de los recaudadores de impuestos, que era rico. 3 Estaba tratando de ver quién era Jesús, pero la multitud se lo impedía, pues era de baja estatura. 4 Por eso se adelantó corriendo y se subió a un árbol sicómoro para poder verlo, ya que Jesús iba a pasar por allí.
5 Llegando al lugar, Jesús miró hacia arriba y le dijo:
—Zaqueo, baja enseguida. Tengo que quedarme hoy en tu casa.
6 Así que se apresuró a bajar y, muy contento, recibió a Jesús en su casa.
7 Al ver esto, todos empezaron a murmurar: «Ha ido a hospedarse con un pecador».
8 Pero Zaqueo dijo resueltamente:
—Mira, Señor, ahora mismo voy a dar a los pobres la mitad de mis bienes y si en algo he defraudado a alguien, le devolveré cuatro veces la cantidad que sea.
9 —Hoy ha llegado la salvación a esta casa —le dijo Jesús—, ya que este también es hijo de Abraham. 10 Porque el Hijo del hombre vino a buscar y a salvar lo que se había perdido.
Parábola del dinero
11 Como la gente lo escuchaba, pasó a contarles una parábola, porque estaba cerca de Jerusalén y la gente pensaba que el reino de Dios iba a manifestarse en cualquier momento. 12 Así que les dijo: «Un hombre de la nobleza se fue a un país lejano para ser coronado rey y luego regresar. 13 Llamó a diez de sus siervos y entregó a cada cual una buena cantidad de dinero.[a] Les instruyó: “Hagan negocio con este dinero hasta que yo vuelva”. 14 Pero sus súbditos lo odiaban y mandaron tras él una delegación a decir: “No queremos a este por rey”.
15 »A pesar de todo, fue nombrado rey. Cuando regresó a su país, mandó llamar a los siervos a quienes había entregado el dinero, para enterarse de lo que habían ganado. 16 Se presentó el primero y dijo: “Señor, su dinero[b] ha producido diez veces más”. 17 “¡Hiciste bien, siervo bueno! —respondió el rey—. Puesto que has sido fiel en tan poca cosa, te doy el gobierno de diez ciudades”. 18 Se presentó el segundo y dijo: “Señor, su dinero ha producido cinco veces más”. 19 El rey respondió: “A ti te pongo sobre cinco ciudades”.
20 »Llegó otro siervo y dijo: “Señor, aquí tiene su dinero; lo he tenido guardado, envuelto en un pañuelo. 21 Es que le tenía miedo a usted, que es un hombre muy exigente: toma lo que no depositó y cosecha lo que no sembró”. 22 El rey contestó: “Siervo malo, con tus propias palabras te voy a juzgar. ¿Así que sabías que soy muy exigente, que tomo lo que no deposité y cosecho lo que no sembré? 23 Entonces, ¿por qué no pusiste mi dinero en el banco, para que al regresar pudiera reclamar los intereses?”. 24 Luego dijo a los presentes: “Quítenle el dinero y dénselo al que recibió diez veces más”. 25 “Señor —protestaron—, ¡él ya tiene diez veces más!”. 26 El rey contestó: “Les aseguro que a todo el que tiene se le dará más, pero al que no tiene se le quitará hasta lo que tiene. 27 Pero en cuanto a esos enemigos míos que no me querían por rey, tráiganlos acá y mátenlos delante de mí”».

28 Dicho esto, Jesús siguió adelante, subiendo hacia Jerusalén. 29 Cuando se acercó a Betfagué y a Betania, junto al monte llamado de los Olivos, envió a dos de sus discípulos con este encargo: 30 «Vayan a la aldea que tienen enfrente y, al entrar en ella, encontrarán atado un burrito en el que nadie se ha montado. Desátenlo y tráiganlo acá. 31 Y si alguien pregunta: “¿Por qué lo desatan?”, díganle: “El Señor lo necesita”».
32 Fueron y lo encontraron tal como él les había dicho. 33 Cuando estaban desatando el burrito, los dueños preguntaron:
—¿Por qué desatan el burrito?
34 —El Señor lo necesita —contestaron.
35 Se lo llevaron, pues, a Jesús. Luego pusieron sus mantos encima del burrito y ayudaron a Jesús a montarse. 36 A medida que avanzaba, la gente tendía sus mantos sobre el camino.
37 Al acercarse él a la bajada del monte de los Olivos, todos los discípulos se entusiasmaron y comenzaron a alabar a Dios por tantos milagros que habían visto. 38 Gritaban:
—¡Bendito el Rey que viene en el nombre del Señor![c]
—¡Paz en el cielo y gloria en las alturas!
39 Algunos de los fariseos que estaban entre la gente reclamaron a Jesús:
—¡Maestro, reprende a tus discípulos!
40 Pero él respondió:
—Les aseguro que, si ellos se callan, gritarán las piedras.
Jesús en el Templo(C)
41 Cuando se acercaba a Jerusalén, Jesús vio la ciudad y lloró por ella. 42 Dijo:
—¡Cómo quisiera que hoy supieras lo que te puede traer paz! Pero eso ahora está oculto a tus ojos. 43 Te sobrevendrán días en que tus enemigos levantarán un muro, te rodearán y te encerrarán por todos lados. 44 Te derribarán a ti y a tus hijos dentro de tus murallas. No dejarán piedra sobre piedra, porque no reconociste el tiempo en que Dios vino a salvarte.[d]
45 Luego entró en el Templo[e] y comenzó a echar de allí a los que estaban vendiendo. 46 «Escrito está —dijo—: “Mi casa será casa de oración”,[f] pero ustedes la han convertido en “cueva de ladrones”».[g]
47 Todos los días enseñaba en el Templo, y los jefes de los sacerdotes, los maestros de la Ley y los dirigentes del pueblo procuraban matarlo. 48 Sin embargo, no encontraban la manera de hacerlo, porque todo el pueblo lo escuchaba con gran interés.

Zacchaeus Meets Jesus
19 Jesus [L entered and] was going through the city of Jericho. 2 A man was there named Zacchaeus, who was a ·very important [chief; leading] tax collector [C with oversight over other tax collectors, and so even more hated; see 18:10], and he was wealthy. 3 He ·wanted [was trying] to see who Jesus was, but he was not able because he was too short to see above the crowd. 4 He ran ahead to a place where Jesus ·would come [was about to pass], and he climbed a sycamore tree so he could see him. 5 When Jesus came to that place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down! [L For; Because] I must stay at your house today.”
6 Zacchaeus came down quickly and welcomed him ·gladly [joyfully]. 7 All the people saw this and began to ·complain [murmur; grumble], “Jesus ·is staying with [has gone in to lodge with/be the guest of] a sinner!”
8 But Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord [C the scene presumably changes here to a meal at Zacchaeus’ home], “[L Look; T Behold] I ·will give [or I am now giving] half of my possessions to the poor. 9 Jesus said to him, “Salvation has come to this house today, because this man also ·belongs to the family [L is a son] of Abraham. 10 [L For; Because] The Son of Man came to ·find [seek out] lost people and save them.”
A Story About Three Servants(A)
11 As ·the people [L they; C either the disciples, the guests of Zacchaeus, or the larger crowd] were listening to this, Jesus told them a ·story [parable] because he was near Jerusalem and ·they thought [it seemed to them] God’s kingdom would appear immediately. 12 He said: “A ·very important man [nobleman] went to a country far away to ·be made a king [L receive a kingdom] and then to return home [C Judean kings, like Herod the Great and his son Archelaus, received their authority to rule from the emperor in Rome]. 13 So he called ten of his ·servants [slaves] and gave a coin [C Greek: mina; worth 100 denarii, or about 3 months’ wages] to each servant. He said, ‘·Do business with [Invest; Trade with] this money until I get back.’ 14 But ·the people in the kingdom [L his citizens/subjects] hated the man. So they sent a ·group [delegation; embassy] to follow him and say, ‘We don’t want this man to ·be our king [L rule/reign over us].’
15 “But the man ·became king [L received the kingdom]. When he returned home, he said, ‘Call those ·servants [slaves] who have my money so I can know how much they earned with it.’
16 “The first servant came and said, ‘Sir, ·I earned ten coins with the one you gave me [L your mina has earned ten minas].’ 17 The king said to the servant, ‘Excellent! ·You are a good servant [Good servant/slave!]. 20 “Then another servant came in and said to the king, ‘Sir, here is your ·coin [mina] which I ·wrapped [stored away] in a ·piece of cloth [handkerchief] and hid. 21 [L For; Because] I was afraid of you, because you are a ·hard [harsh; demanding; severe] man. 24 “·The king [He] said to the men who were standing by, ‘Take the ·coin [L mina] away from this servant and give it to the servant who earned ten ·coins [L minas].’ 25 They said, ‘But sir, that servant already has ten ·coins [L minas].’ 26 ·The king said [L I say to you], ‘Those who have will be given more, but those who do not have anything ·will have everything [L even what they have will be] taken away from them. 27 Now ·where are my enemies [or concerning those enemies] who didn’t want me to ·be king [rule/reign over them]? Bring them here and ·kill [slay; slaughter] them before me.’”
Jesus Enters Jerusalem as a King(B)
28 After Jesus said this, he went on [L ahead, going up] toward Jerusalem. 29 As Jesus came near Bethphage and Bethany, towns near the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent out two of his ·followers [disciples]. 30 He said, “Go to the town ·you can see there [ahead of you; or opposite you; C unclear whether Bethphage or Bethany]. When you enter it, you will find a ·colt [young donkey] tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here to me. 31 If anyone asks you why you are untying it, say that ·the Master [the Lord; or its Owner] needs it.”
32 The two ·followers [L who were sent] went into town and found ·the colt [or the situation] just as Jesus had told them. 33 As they were untying it, its ·owners [masters] came out and asked the followers, “Why are you untying our ·colt [young donkey]?”
34 The followers answered, “·The Master [The Lord; Its Owner] needs it.” 35 So they brought it to Jesus, threw their ·coats [garments] on the ·colt’s [young donkey’s] back, and put Jesus on it. 36 As Jesus rode toward Jerusalem, others spread their coats on the ·road [path; way] before him.
37 As he was coming close to Jerusalem, on the way down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of ·followers [disciples] began joyfully shouting praise to God for all the ·miracles [mighty works] they had seen. 38 They said,
“·God bless [Blessed is] the king who comes in the name of the Lord [Ps. 118:26]!
·There is peace [or May there be peace; L Peace] in heaven and glory ·to God [L in the highest; C either “in highest heaven” or “to the Most High God”]!”
39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, ·tell your followers not to say these things [L rebuke your disciples].”
40 But Jesus answered, “I tell you, if ·my followers didn’t say these things [L they remained silent], then the stones would ·cry out [start shouting].”
Jesus Cries for Jerusalem
41 As Jesus came near Jerusalem, he saw the city and ·cried for [wept over] it, 42 saying, “·I wish you [L If you, even you,] ·knew [recognized] today what would bring you peace. But now it is hidden from ·you [L your eyes]. 43 ·The time is coming [L For the days will come upon you] when your enemies will build ·a wall around you [ramparts against your walls] and will ·hold you in [L surround and close you in] on all sides. 44 They will ·destroy you [level you; smash you to the ground] and all your ·people [L children within your walls], and not one stone will be left on another. All this will happen because you did not recognize the time ·when God came to save you [L of your visitation; C the failure to recognize God’s “visit” in Jesus (see 1:68, 78) will result in a divine “visit” in judgment].”
Jesus Goes to the Temple(C)
45 Jesus went into the Temple and began to ·throw [drive] out the people who were selling things there. 46 He said, “It is written in the Scriptures, ‘My ·Temple [L House] will be a house for prayer [Is. 56:7].’ But you have ·changed [made] it into a ‘·hideout for robbers’ [T den of thieves; Jer. 7:11]!”
47 Jesus ·taught [was teaching] in the Temple every day. The ·leading [T chief] priests, the ·experts on the law [scribes], and some of the leaders of the people ·wanted [were looking for a way] to ·kill [destroy] Jesus. 48 But they ·did not know how they could [could not find a way to] do it, because all the people were ·listening closely to him [hanging on his every word].

Zacchaeus the Tax Collector
19 Jesus entered Jericho(A) and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig(B) tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.(C)
5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.
7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”(D)
8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord,(E) “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything,(F) I will pay back four times the amount.”(G)
9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.(H) 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”(I)
The Parable of the Ten Minas(J)
11 While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God(K) was going to appear at once.(L) 12 He said: “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. 13 So he called ten of his servants(M) and gave them ten minas.[a] ‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’
14 “But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’
15 “He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it.
16 “The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’
17 “‘Well done, my good servant!’(N) his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’(O)
18 “The second came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned five more.’
19 “His master answered, ‘You take charge of five cities.’
20 “Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. 21 I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’(P)
22 “His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words,(Q) you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow?(R) 23 Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’
24 “Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’
25 “‘Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’
26 “He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away.(S) 27 But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.’”
Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(T)(U)
28 After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.(V) 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany(W) at the hill called the Mount of Olives,(X) he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30 “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
32 Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them.(Y) 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.”
35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks(Z) on the road.
37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives,(AA) the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”(AC)
39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”(AD)
40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”(AE)
41 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it(AF) 42 and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. 43 The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.(AG) 44 They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls.(AH) They will not leave one stone on another,(AI) because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming(AJ) to you.”
Jesus at the Temple(AK)
45 When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling. 46 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be a house of prayer’[c];(AL) but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’[d]”(AM)
47 Every day he was teaching at the temple.(AN) But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.(AO) 48 Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.
