Jesús y Zaqueo
19 Jesús entró en Jericó, y comenzó a cruzar la ciudad. 2 Mientras caminaba, un hombre rico llamado Zaqueo, que era jefe de los cobradores de impuestos, 3 trataba de ver quién era Jesús, pero por causa de la multitud no podía hacerlo, pues era de baja estatura. 4 Pero rápidamente se adelantó y, para verlo, se trepó a un árbol, pues Jesús iba a pasar por allí. 5 Cuando Jesús llegó a ese lugar, levantó la vista y le dijo: «Zaqueo, apúrate y baja de allí, porque hoy tengo que pasar la noche en tu casa.» 6 Zaqueo bajó de prisa, y con mucho gusto recibió a Jesús. 7 Todos, al ver esto, murmuraban, pues decían que Jesús había entrado en la casa de un pecador. 8 Pero Zaqueo se puso de pie y le dijo al Señor: «Señor, voy a dar ahora mismo la mitad de mis bienes a los pobres. Y si en algo he defraudado a alguien, le devolveré cuatro veces más lo defraudado.» 9 Jesús le dijo: «Hoy ha llegado la salvación a esta casa, pues este hombre también es hijo de Abrahán. 10 Porque el Hijo del Hombre vino a buscar y a salvar lo que se había perdido.»(A)
Parábola de los siervos
11 Al escuchar la gente estas cosas, Jesús les contó una parábola, pues ya estaba cerca de Jerusalén y la gente pensaba que el reino de Dios estaba por manifestarse. 12 Jesús les dijo: «Un hombre de alto rango se fue a un país lejano, para recibir un reino y luego volver. 13 Antes de partir, llamó a diez de sus siervos, les dio una buena cantidad de dinero,[a] y les dijo: “Hagan negocio con este dinero, hasta que yo vuelva.” 14 Pero sus conciudadanos lo odiaban, y enviaron tras él unos representantes para que dijeran: “No queremos que éste reine sobre nosotros.” 15 Cuando ese hombre volvió, después de recibir el reino, hizo comparecer ante él a los siervos a quienes había dado el dinero, para saber qué negocios había hecho cada uno. 16 Cuando llegó el primero, dijo: “Señor, tu dinero ha producido diez veces más”. 17 Aquel hombre dijo: “¡Bien hecho! Eres un buen siervo. Puesto que en lo poco has sido fiel, vas a gobernar diez ciudades.” 18 Otro más llegó y le dijo: “Señor, tu dinero ha producido cinco veces más.” 19 Y también a éste le dijo: “Tú vas a gobernar cinco ciudades.” 20 Llegó otro más, y le dijo: “Señor, aquí tienes tu dinero. Lo he tenido envuelto en un pañuelo, 21 pues tuve miedo de ti, porque sé que eres un hombre duro, que tomas lo que no pusiste, y recoges lo que no sembraste.” 22 Entonces aquel hombre le dijo: “¡Mal siervo! Por tus propias palabras voy a juzgarte. Si sabías que soy un hombre duro, que tomo lo que no puse, y que recojo lo que no sembré, 23 ¿por qué no pusiste mi dinero en el banco? Así, ¡a mi regreso lo habría recibido con los intereses!” 24 Y dijo entonces a los que estaban presentes: “¡Quítenle el dinero, y dénselo al que ganó diez veces más!” 25 Pero ellos objetaron: “Señor, ése ya tiene mucho dinero.” 26 Y aquel hombre dijo: “Pues al que tiene, se le da más; pero al que no tiene, aun lo poco que tiene se le quita.(B) 27 Y en cuanto a mis enemigos, los que no querían que yo fuera su rey, ¡tráiganlos y decapítenlos delante de mí!”»(C)
La entrada triunfal en Jerusalén(D)
28 Después de decir esto, Jesús siguió su camino en dirección a Jerusalén. 29 Cuando ya estaba cerca de Betfagué y de Betania, junto al monte que se llama de los Olivos, les dijo a dos de sus discípulos: 30 «Vayan a la aldea que está ante ustedes. Al entrar en ella, van a encontrar atado un burrito, sobre el cual nadie se ha montado. Desátenlo y tráiganlo aquí. 31 Si alguien les pregunta: “¿Por qué lo desatan?”, respondan: “Porque el Señor lo necesita.”» 32 Los discípulos se fueron y encontraron todo tal y como él les había dicho. 33 Mientras desataban el burrito, sus dueños les dijeron: «¿Por qué lo desatan?» 34 Y ellos contestaron: «Porque el Señor lo necesita.» 35 Luego se lo llevaron a Jesús, echaron sus mantos sobre el burrito, e hicieron montar a Jesús. 36 Conforme Jesús avanzaba, la multitud tendía sus mantos por el camino. 37 Cuando se acercó a la bajada del monte de los Olivos, todo el conjunto de sus discípulos comenzó a gritar de alegría y a alabar a Dios por todas las maravillas que habían visto; 38 y decían: «¡Bendito el rey que viene en el nombre del Señor!(E) ¡Paz en el cielo, y gloria en las alturas!» 39 Algunos de los fariseos que iban entre la multitud le dijeron: «Maestro, ¡reprende a tus discípulos!» 40 Pero Jesús les dijo: «Si éstos callaran, las piedras clamarían.»
41 Ya cerca de la ciudad, Jesús lloró al verla, 42 y dijo: «¡Ah, si por lo menos hoy pudieras saber lo que te puede traer paz! Pero eso ahora está oculto a tus ojos. 43 Porque van a venir sobre ti días, cuando tus enemigos levantarán un cerco a tu alrededor, y te sitiarán. 44 Y te destruirán por completo, a ti y a tus hijos dentro de ti, y no dejarán en ti piedra sobre piedra, por cuanto no te diste cuenta del momento en que Dios vino a visitarte.»
Purificación del templo(F)
45 Después Jesús entró en el templo, y comenzó a echar de allí a todos los que vendían y compraban. 46 Les decía: «Escrito está: “Mi casa es casa de oración.”(G) ¡Pero ustedes han hecho de ella una cueva de ladrones!»(H) 47 Todos los días Jesús enseñaba en el templo,(I) pero los principales sacerdotes, los escribas y los principales del pueblo procuraban matarlo. 48 Sin embargo, no hallaban la manera de hacerlo, pues todo el pueblo estaba pendiente de lo que él decía.

Zaqueo, el recaudador de impuestos
19 Jesús llegó a Jericó y comenzó a cruzar la ciudad. 2 Resulta que había allí un hombre llamado Zaqueo, jefe de los recaudadores de impuestos, que era rico. 3 Estaba tratando de ver quién era Jesús, pero la multitud se lo impedía, pues era de baja estatura. 4 Por eso se adelantó corriendo y se subió a un árbol sicómoro para poder verlo, ya que Jesús iba a pasar por allí.
5 Llegando al lugar, Jesús miró hacia arriba y le dijo:
—Zaqueo, baja enseguida. Tengo que quedarme hoy en tu casa.
6 Así que se apresuró a bajar y, muy contento, recibió a Jesús en su casa.
7 Al ver esto, todos empezaron a murmurar: «Ha ido a hospedarse con un pecador».
8 Pero Zaqueo dijo resueltamente:
—Mira, Señor, ahora mismo voy a dar a los pobres la mitad de mis bienes y si en algo he defraudado a alguien, le devolveré cuatro veces la cantidad que sea.
9 —Hoy ha llegado la salvación a esta casa —le dijo Jesús—, ya que este también es hijo de Abraham. 10 Porque el Hijo del hombre vino a buscar y a salvar lo que se había perdido.
Parábola del dinero
11 Como la gente lo escuchaba, pasó a contarles una parábola, porque estaba cerca de Jerusalén y la gente pensaba que el reino de Dios iba a manifestarse en cualquier momento. 12 Así que les dijo: «Un hombre de la nobleza se fue a un país lejano para ser coronado rey y luego regresar. 13 Llamó a diez de sus siervos y entregó a cada cual una buena cantidad de dinero.[a] Les instruyó: “Hagan negocio con este dinero hasta que yo vuelva”. 14 Pero sus súbditos lo odiaban y mandaron tras él una delegación a decir: “No queremos a este por rey”.
15 »A pesar de todo, fue nombrado rey. Cuando regresó a su país, mandó llamar a los siervos a quienes había entregado el dinero, para enterarse de lo que habían ganado. 16 Se presentó el primero y dijo: “Señor, su dinero[b] ha producido diez veces más”. 17 “¡Hiciste bien, siervo bueno! —respondió el rey—. Puesto que has sido fiel en tan poca cosa, te doy el gobierno de diez ciudades”. 18 Se presentó el segundo y dijo: “Señor, su dinero ha producido cinco veces más”. 19 El rey respondió: “A ti te pongo sobre cinco ciudades”.
20 »Llegó otro siervo y dijo: “Señor, aquí tiene su dinero; lo he tenido guardado, envuelto en un pañuelo. 21 Es que le tenía miedo a usted, que es un hombre muy exigente: toma lo que no depositó y cosecha lo que no sembró”. 22 El rey contestó: “Siervo malo, con tus propias palabras te voy a juzgar. ¿Así que sabías que soy muy exigente, que tomo lo que no deposité y cosecho lo que no sembré? 23 Entonces, ¿por qué no pusiste mi dinero en el banco, para que al regresar pudiera reclamar los intereses?”. 24 Luego dijo a los presentes: “Quítenle el dinero y dénselo al que recibió diez veces más”. 25 “Señor —protestaron—, ¡él ya tiene diez veces más!”. 26 El rey contestó: “Les aseguro que a todo el que tiene se le dará más, pero al que no tiene se le quitará hasta lo que tiene. 27 Pero en cuanto a esos enemigos míos que no me querían por rey, tráiganlos acá y mátenlos delante de mí”».

28 Dicho esto, Jesús siguió adelante, subiendo hacia Jerusalén. 29 Cuando se acercó a Betfagué y a Betania, junto al monte llamado de los Olivos, envió a dos de sus discípulos con este encargo: 30 «Vayan a la aldea que tienen enfrente y, al entrar en ella, encontrarán atado un burrito en el que nadie se ha montado. Desátenlo y tráiganlo acá. 31 Y si alguien pregunta: “¿Por qué lo desatan?”, díganle: “El Señor lo necesita”».
32 Fueron y lo encontraron tal como él les había dicho. 33 Cuando estaban desatando el burrito, los dueños preguntaron:
—¿Por qué desatan el burrito?
34 —El Señor lo necesita —contestaron.
35 Se lo llevaron, pues, a Jesús. Luego pusieron sus mantos encima del burrito y ayudaron a Jesús a montarse. 36 A medida que avanzaba, la gente tendía sus mantos sobre el camino.
37 Al acercarse él a la bajada del monte de los Olivos, todos los discípulos se entusiasmaron y comenzaron a alabar a Dios por tantos milagros que habían visto. 38 Gritaban:
—¡Bendito el Rey que viene en el nombre del Señor![c]
—¡Paz en el cielo y gloria en las alturas!
39 Algunos de los fariseos que estaban entre la gente reclamaron a Jesús:
—¡Maestro, reprende a tus discípulos!
40 Pero él respondió:
—Les aseguro que, si ellos se callan, gritarán las piedras.
Jesús en el Templo(C)
41 Cuando se acercaba a Jerusalén, Jesús vio la ciudad y lloró por ella. 42 Dijo:
—¡Cómo quisiera que hoy supieras lo que te puede traer paz! Pero eso ahora está oculto a tus ojos. 43 Te sobrevendrán días en que tus enemigos levantarán un muro, te rodearán y te encerrarán por todos lados. 44 Te derribarán a ti y a tus hijos dentro de tus murallas. No dejarán piedra sobre piedra, porque no reconociste el tiempo en que Dios vino a salvarte.[d]
45 Luego entró en el Templo[e] y comenzó a echar de allí a los que estaban vendiendo. 46 «Escrito está —dijo—: “Mi casa será casa de oración”,[f] pero ustedes la han convertido en “cueva de ladrones”».[g]
47 Todos los días enseñaba en el Templo, y los jefes de los sacerdotes, los maestros de la Ley y los dirigentes del pueblo procuraban matarlo. 48 Sin embargo, no encontraban la manera de hacerlo, porque todo el pueblo lo escuchaba con gran interés.

19 And Jesus going in, walked through Jericho.
2 And lo! a man, Zacchaeus by name, and this was [and he was] a prince of publicans, and he was rich.
3 And he sought to see Jesus, who he was, and he might not, for the people [for the company of people], for he was little in stature.
4 And he ran before, and ascended [up] into a sycamore tree, to see him; for he was to pass from thence [for he was to pass thence].
5 And Jesus beheld up, when he came to the place, and saw him, and said to him, Zacchaeus, haste thee, and come down, for to day I must dwell in thine house.
6 And he hieing came down [And he hasting came down], and joying received him.
7 And when all men saw, they grumbled [they grutched], saying, For he had turned to a sinful man.
8 But Zacchaeus stood, and said to the Lord, Lo! Lord, I give the half of my goods to poor men; and if I have any thing defrauded any man, I yield four so much [I yield fourfold].
9 Jesus saith to him, For to day health is made to this house, for that he is Abraham's son; [Jesus said to him, For in this day health is made to this house, for and he is the son of Abraham;]
10 for man's Son came to seek, and make safe that thing that perished.
11 When they heard these things, he added, and said a parable, for that he was nigh to Jerusalem, and for they guessed, that at once the kingdom of God should be showed [and for they guessed, that the kingdom of God should be showed anon].
12 Therefore he said, A worthy man went into a far country [Some nobleman went into a far country], to take to him a kingdom, and to turn again.
13 And when his ten servants were called, he gave to them ten bezants; and said to them, Chaffer ye [Merchandize ye], till I come.
14 But his citizens hated him, and sent a messenger after him, and said, We will not, that he reign on us.[a]
15 And it was done, that he turned again, when he had taken the kingdom; and he commanded his servants to be called, to which he had given money, to know [to whom he gave money, that he should know], how much each had won by chaffering.
16 And the first came, and said [saying], Lord, thy bezant hath won ten bezants.
17 He said to him, Well be, thou good servant; for in little thing thou hast been true, thou shalt be having power on ten cities [thou shalt have power upon ten cities].
18 And the tother came, and said [And the tother came, saying], Lord, thy bezant hath made five bezants.
19 And to this he said, And be thou on five cities. [And he said to this, And be thou upon five cities.]
20 And the third came, and said, Lord, lo! thy bezant, that I had, put up in a sudarium.[b]
21 For I dreaded thee, for thou art an austere man; thou takest away that that thou settedest not, and thou reapest that that thou hast not sown.
22 He saith to him, Wicked servant, of thy mouth I deem thee. Knewest thou, that I am an austere man, taking away that thing that I setted not, and reaping that thing that I sowed not[c]?
23 and why hast thou not given my money to the board, and I coming should have asked it with usuries? [and why hast thou not given my money to the board, that and I coming should have received it soothly with usuries?]
24 And he said to men standing nigh, Take away from him the bezant, and give ye to him that hath ten bezants.[d]
25 And they said to him, Lord, he hath ten bezants.
26 And I say to you, to each man that hath, it shall be given, and he shall increase [and he shall abound]; but from him that hath not, also that thing that he hath, shall be taken of him [shall be taken from him].
27 Nevertheless bring ye hither those mine enemies, that would not that I reigned on them [that would not me to reign upon them], and slay ye before me.
28 And when these things were said, he went before, and went up to Jerusalem. [And these things said, he went before, ascending to Jerusalem.]
29 And it was done, when Jesus came nigh to Bethphage and Bethany [when he came nigh to Bethphage and Bethany], at the mount, that is called of Olives, he sent his two disciples,
30 and said [saying], Go ye into the castle, that is against you; into which as ye enter [into which ye entering], ye shall find a colt of an ass tied, on which never man sat; untie ye him, and bring ye to me.
31 And if any man ask you, why ye untie, thus ye shall say to him, For the Lord desireth his work.
32 And they that were sent, went forth, and found as he said to them, a colt standing.
33 And when they untied the colt, the lords of it said to them, What untie ye the colt? [Soothly them untying the colt, the lords of him said, Why untie ye the colt?]
34 And they said, For the Lord hath need to him.
35 And they led him to Jesus; and they casted their clothes on the colt, and set Jesus on him[e].
36 And when he went, they spreaded their clothes in the way.
37 And when [now] he came nigh to the coming down of the mount of Olives, all the people [all the companies of men] that came down began to joy, and to praise God with great voice on all the works of power [on all the virtues], that they had seen,
38 and said [saying], Blessed be the king, that cometh in the name of the Lord; peace in heaven, and glory in high things.
39 And some of the Pharisees of the people said to him [And some of the Pharisees of the companies said to him], Master, blame thy disciples.
40 And he said to them, I say to you, for if these [shall] be still, stones shall cry.
41 And when he approached, he saw the city, and wept on it, [And when he nighed, he seeing the city, wept upon it,]
42 and said, For if thou haddest known, thou shouldest weep also; for in this day the things be in peace to thee, but now they be hid from thine eyes. [saying, For if thou haddest known, and thou, and soothly in this thy day, the which is to peace to thee; but now they be hid from thine eyes.]
43 But days shall come in thee, and thine enemies shall environ thee with a pale, and they shall go about thee, and make thee strait on all sides.[f]
44 and [they shall] cast thee down to the earth, and thy sons that be in thee [and thy children that be in thee]; and they shall not leave in thee a stone upon a stone, for thou hast not known the time of thy visitation.
45 And he entered into the temple, and began to cast out men selling therein and buying,
46 and said [saying] to them, It is written, That mine house is an house of prayer, but ye have made it a den of thieves.
47 And he was teaching every day in the temple. And the princes of priests, and the scribes, and the princes of the people sought to destroy him [Forsooth the prince of priests, and the scribes, and the princes of the people sought to lose him];
48 and they found not, what they should do to him, for all the people was [all] occupied, and heard him.[g]

Zacchaeus the Tax Collector
19 Jesus entered Jericho(A) and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig(B) tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.(C)
5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.
7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”(D)
8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord,(E) “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything,(F) I will pay back four times the amount.”(G)
9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.(H) 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”(I)
The Parable of the Ten Minas(J)
11 While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God(K) was going to appear at once.(L) 12 He said: “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. 13 So he called ten of his servants(M) and gave them ten minas.[a] ‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’
14 “But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’
15 “He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it.
16 “The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’
17 “‘Well done, my good servant!’(N) his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’(O)
18 “The second came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned five more.’
19 “His master answered, ‘You take charge of five cities.’
20 “Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. 21 I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’(P)
22 “His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words,(Q) you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow?(R) 23 Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’
24 “Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’
25 “‘Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’
26 “He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away.(S) 27 But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.’”
Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(T)(U)
28 After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.(V) 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany(W) at the hill called the Mount of Olives,(X) he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30 “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
32 Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them.(Y) 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.”
35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks(Z) on the road.
37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives,(AA) the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”(AC)
39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”(AD)
40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”(AE)
41 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it(AF) 42 and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. 43 The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.(AG) 44 They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls.(AH) They will not leave one stone on another,(AI) because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming(AJ) to you.”
Jesus at the Temple(AK)
45 When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling. 46 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be a house of prayer’[c];(AL) but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’[d]”(AM)
47 Every day he was teaching at the temple.(AN) But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.(AO) 48 Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.
