12 Ajuntando-se, entretanto, muitos milhares de pessoas, de sorte que se atropelavam uns aos outros, começou a dizer aos seus discípulos: Acautelai-vos, primeiramente, do fermento dos fariseus, que é a hipocrisia. 2 Mas nada há encoberto que não haja de ser descoberto; nem oculto, que não haja de ser sabido. 3 Porquanto tudo o que em trevas dissestes à luz será ouvido; e o que falastes ao ouvido no gabinete sobre os telhados será apregoado.
Não devemos temer os homens(A)
4 E digo-vos, amigos meus: não temais os que matam o corpo e depois não têm mais o que fazer. 5 Mas eu vos mostrarei a quem deveis temer: temei aquele que, depois de matar, tem poder para lançar no inferno; sim, vos digo, a esse temei. 6 Não se vendem cinco passarinhos por dois ceitis? E nenhum deles está esquecido diante de Deus. 7 E até os cabelos da vossa cabeça estão todos contados. Não temais, pois; mais valeis vós do que muitos passarinhos. 8 E digo-vos que todo aquele que me confessar diante dos homens, também o Filho do Homem o confessará diante dos anjos de Deus. 9 Mas quem me negar diante dos homens será negado diante dos anjos de Deus. 10 E a todo aquele que disser uma palavra contra o Filho do Homem ser-lhe-á perdoada, mas ao que blasfemar contra o Espírito Santo não lhe será perdoado. 11 E, quando vos conduzirem às sinagogas, aos magistrados e potestades, não estejais solícitos de como ou do que haveis de responder, nem do que haveis de dizer. 12 Porque na mesma hora vos ensinará o Espírito Santo o que vos convenha falar.
A parábola do rico insensato
13 E disse-lhe um da multidão: Mestre, dize a meu irmão que reparta comigo a herança. 14 Mas ele lhe disse: Homem, quem me pôs a mim por juiz ou repartidor entre vós? 15 E disse-lhes: Acautelai-vos e guardai-vos da avareza, porque a vida de qualquer não consiste na abundância do que possui. 16 E propôs-lhes uma parábola, dizendo: a herdade de um homem rico tinha produzido com abundância. 17 E arrazoava ele entre si, dizendo: Que farei? Não tenho onde recolher os meus frutos. 18 E disse: Farei isto: derribarei os meus celeiros, e edificarei outros maiores, e ali recolherei todas as minhas novidades e os meus bens; 19 e direi à minha alma: alma, tens em depósito muitos bens, para muitos anos; descansa, come, bebe e folga. 20 Mas Deus lhe disse: Louco, esta noite te pedirão a tua alma, e o que tens preparado para quem será? 21 Assim é aquele que para si ajunta tesouros e não é rico para com Deus.
A solicitude pela nossa vida(B)
22 E disse aos seus discípulos: Portanto, vos digo: não estejais apreensivos pela vossa vida, sobre o que comereis, nem pelo corpo, sobre o que vestireis. 23 Mais é a vida do que o sustento, e o corpo, mais do que as vestes. 24 Considerai os corvos, que nem semeiam, nem segam, nem têm despensa nem celeiro, e Deus os alimenta; quanto mais valeis vós do que as aves? 25 E qual de vós, sendo solícito, pode acrescentar um côvado à sua estatura? 26 Pois, se nem ainda podeis as coisas mínimas, por que estais ansiosos pelas outras? 27 Considerai os lírios, como eles crescem; não trabalham, nem fiam; e digo-vos que nem ainda Salomão, em toda a sua glória, se vestiu como um deles. 28 E, se Deus assim veste a erva, que hoje está no campo e amanhã é lançada no forno, quanto mais a vós, homens de pequena fé? 29 Não pergunteis, pois, que haveis de comer ou que haveis de beber, e não andeis inquietos. 30 Porque os gentios do mundo buscam todas essas coisas; mas vosso Pai sabe que necessitais delas. 31 Buscai, antes, o Reino de Deus, e todas essas coisas vos serão acrescentadas. 32 Não temas, ó pequeno rebanho, porque a vosso Pai agradou dar-vos o Reino. 33 Vendei o que tendes, e dai esmolas, e fazei para vós bolsas que não se envelheçam, tesouro nos céus que nunca acabe, aonde não chega ladrão, e a traça não rói. 34 Porque onde estiver o vosso tesouro, ali estará também o vosso coração.
A parábola do servo vigilante(C)
35 Estejam cingidos os vossos lombos, e acesas, as vossas candeias. 36 E sede vós semelhantes aos homens que esperam o seu senhor, quando houver de voltar das bodas, para que, quando vier e bater, logo possam abrir-lhe. 37 Bem-aventurados aqueles servos, os quais, quando o Senhor vier, achar vigiando! Em verdade vos digo que se cingirá, e os fará assentar à mesa, e, chegando-se, os servirá. 38 E, se vier na segunda vigília, e se vier na terceira vigília, e os achar assim, bem-aventurados são os tais servos. 39 Sabei, porém, isto: se o pai de família soubesse a que hora havia de vir o ladrão, vigiaria e não deixaria minar a sua casa. 40 Portanto, estai vós também apercebidos; porque virá o Filho do Homem à hora que não imaginais. 41 E disse-lhe Pedro: Senhor, dizes essa parábola a nós ou também a todos? 42 E disse o Senhor: Qual é, pois, o mordomo fiel e prudente, a quem o senhor pôs sobre os seus servos, para lhes dar a tempo a ração? 43 Bem-aventurado aquele servo a quem o senhor, quando vier, achar fazendo assim. 44 Em verdade vos digo que sobre todos os seus bens o porá. 45 Mas, se aquele servo disser em seu coração: O meu senhor tarda em vir, e começar a espancar os criados e criadas, e a comer, e a beber, e a embriagar-se, 46 virá o Senhor daquele servo no dia em que o não espera e numa hora que ele não sabe, e separá-lo-á, e lhe dará a sua parte com os infiéis. 47 E o servo que soube a vontade do seu senhor e não se aprontou, nem fez conforme a sua vontade, será castigado com muitos açoites. 48 Mas o que a não soube e fez coisas dignas de açoites com poucos açoites será castigado. E a qualquer que muito for dado, muito se lhe pedirá, e ao que muito se lhe confiou, muito mais se lhe pedirá.
Jesus traz fogo e dissensão à terra
49 Vim lançar fogo na terra e que mais quero, se já está aceso? 50 Importa, porém, que eu seja batizado com um certo batismo, e como me angustio até que venha a cumprir-se! 51 Cuidais vós que vim trazer paz à terra? Não, vos digo, mas, antes, dissensão. 52 Porque, daqui em diante, estarão cinco divididos numa casa: três contra dois, e dois contra três. 53 O pai estará dividido contra o filho, e o filho, contra o pai, a mãe, contra a filha, e a filha, contra a mãe, a sogra, contra sua nora, e a nora, contra sua sogra.
Os sinais dos tempos
54 E dizia também à multidão: Quando vedes a nuvem que vem do ocidente, logo dizeis: Lá vem chuva; e assim sucede. 55 E, quando assopra o vento sul, dizeis: Haverá calma; e assim sucede. 56 Hipócritas, sabeis discernir a face da terra e do céu; como não sabeis, então, discernir este tempo? 57 E por que não julgais também por vós mesmos o que é justo? 58 Quando, pois, vais com o teu adversário ao magistrado, procura livrar-te dele no caminho; para que não suceda que te conduza ao juiz, e o juiz te entregue ao meirinho, e o meirinho te encerre na prisão. 59 Digo-te que não sairás dali enquanto não pagares o derradeiro ceitil.

Não sejam como os fariseus
12 Milhares de pessoas se juntaram; e eram tantas que pisavam umas nas outras. Jesus, então, começou a falar, dirigindo-se primeiro aos seus discípulos:
—Previnam-se contra o fermento dos fariseus, isto é, contra a falsidade deles. 2 Não há nada que esteja oculto e que não venha a ser revelado; nem nada que esteja escondido e que não venha a ser descoberto. 3 Portanto, tudo o que vocês disseram às escuras será falado em plena luz; e tudo o que, num quarto fechado, vocês sussurraram aos ouvidos de alguém, será anunciado diante das pessoas.
Temam a Deus e não aos homens
(Mt 10.28-31)
4 Eu digo a vocês, meus amigos: Não tenham medo daqueles que matam o corpo mas que não podem fazer mais nada depois disso. 5 Eu direi a vocês de quem é que vocês devem ter medo: Tenham medo daquele que, depois de matar, tem o poder de lançar vocês no inferno. Deste sim, eu lhes digo que vocês devem ter medo.
6 —Não se vendem cinco pardais por tão pouco dinheiro? Deus, porém, não se esquece de nenhum deles. 7 Até mesmo os fios de cabelo da cabeça de vocês estão contados. Não tenham medo de nada; vocês valem mais do que muitos pardais!
Afirmar e negar a Cristo
(Mt 10.32-33; 12.32; 10.19-20)
8 Eu digo a vocês: Se alguém afirmar publicamente ser meu seguidor, então o Filho do Homem também afirmará, diante dos anjos de Deus, que essa pessoa é meu seguidor. 9 Porém, aquele que publicamente me negar, também será negado diante dos anjos de Deus. 10 Todo aquele que falar contra o Filho do Homem será perdoado. Mas aquele que insultar o Espírito Santo não será perdoado.
11 —Quando levarem vocês para as sinagogas, diante das autoridades e governadores, não fiquem preocupados pensando em como vão se defender ou o que vão dizer. 12 Pois, o Espírito Santo ensinará a vocês quando estiverem diante deles o que deverão dizer.
Jesus reprova a avareza
13 Então, do meio da multidão alguém lhe disse:
—Mestre, diga para o meu irmão dividir a herança comigo!
14 Mas Jesus respondeu:
—Homem, quem me nomeou juiz ou árbitro sobre vocês?
15 E disse a todos:
—Tenham cuidado! Evitem todo tipo de avareza, pois a vida de um homem não depende das coisas que ele tem, mesmo que seja muito rico.
16 E então lhes contou esta parábola:
—As terras de certo homem rico tinham produzido uma colheita muito boa.
17 Então ele pensou: “Eu não tenho lugar para guardar a minha colheita. O que vou fazer?” 18 Então disse: “Já sei o que vou fazer! Vou demolir os meus celeiros e construir outros maiores. Assim poderei guardar toda a minha colheita e todos os meus bens! 19 Daí poderei dizer a mim mesmo: ‘Homem, você já tem muitas coisas boas guardadas para muitos anos. Portanto descanse, coma, beba e se divirta!’” 20 Deus, porém, lhe disse: “Tolo! Esta noite você morrerá. Com quem ficarão todas as coisas que você guardou?”
21 —A mesma coisa acontecerá para aqueles que acumulam tesouros para si mesmos, mas que não são ricos para com Deus.
Ponham em primeiro lugar o reino de Deus
(Mt 6.25-34,19-21)
22 Depois disso Jesus disse aos seus discípulos:
—Por isso eu lhes digo: Não se preocupem com as coisas que vocês precisam para viver, como a comida ou as roupas. 23 Pois a vida é mais importante do que a comida e o corpo é mais importante do que as roupas. 24 Olhem para os corvos: Eles não plantam nem colhem, nem têm celeiros nem armazéns; e mesmo assim Deus lhes dá o que comer. Será que vocês não valem muito mais do que os pássaros? 25 Qual de vocês, por mais que se preocupe, pode adicionar uma hora à sua vida? 26 Portanto, se não podem conseguir uma coisa assim tão pequena, por que se preocupam com o resto? 27 Olhem para os lírios e vejam como eles crescem! Eles não trabalham nem fazem roupas. Contudo eu lhes digo que nem mesmo o rei Salomão, com toda a sua riqueza, se vestiu como um deles! 28 Se Deus veste dessa maneira as plantas do campo, que hoje estão aqui e amanhã são jogadas no fogo, quanto mais ele vestirá a vocês, gente de pouca fé! 29 Portanto, não se preocupem com o que vão comer ou beber, nem se aflijam por causa disso. 30 As pessoas deste mundo que não conhecem a Deus é que estão sempre procurando essas coisas. Mas o Pai de vocês sabe que precisam delas. 31 Portanto, se vocês procurarem o reino de Deus, ele lhes dará essas coisas.
Não confiem nas riquezas
32 Não tenha medo, meu pequeno rebanho, pois o seu Pai tem prazer em lhe dar o reino. 33 Vendam os seus bens e deem o dinheiro aos pobres. Façam para vocês mesmos bolsas que não se estraguem; acumulem um tesouro inesgotável no céu, onde nenhum ladrão o toca e nenhuma traça o destrói. 34 Lembrem-se disto: onde estiver o seu tesouro, lá também estará o seu coração.
Estejam alerta
(Mt 24.42-44)
35 —Estejam preparados e com os seus lampiões acesos. 36 Sejam como as pessoas que esperam seu senhor voltar da festa de casamento, para que, quando ele chegar e bater à porta, elas possam abrir imediatamente. 37 Felizes são aqueles servos cujo senhor os encontrar acordados e prontos quando ele chegar! Digo a verdade a vocês: Ele mesmo se preparará e os servirá, enquanto eles estarão à mesa. 38 E mesmo que ele chegue à meia-noite ou até mais tarde, felizes serão eles se os encontrar preparados. 39 Porém, tenham certeza disto: Se o dono da casa soubesse a que horas viria o ladrão, certamente não permitiria que roubasse o que tem na sua casa. 40 Portanto, estejam vocês também preparados, pois o Filho do Homem virá quando não estiverem esperando.
A parábola do servo bom e do servo mau
(Mt 24.45-51)
41 E Pedro disse:
—Senhor, está contando esta parábola para nós, ou para todos?
42 Então o Senhor disse:
—Quem será, então, o mordomo leal e prudente que o Senhor nomeará sobre os seus servos para lhes dar de comer na ocasião certa? 43 Feliz é o servo que estiver fazendo isso quando o seu senhor chegar! 44 Digo a verdade a vocês: Ele o colocará para tomar conta de todos os seus bens. 45 Mas se aquele servo diz consigo mesmo: “O meu senhor está demorando muito” e começar a bater nos outros servos e servas, e a comer e beber e a ficar bêbado. 46 Então o senhor daquele servo chegará num dia em que ele não espera e numa hora que ele nem imagina, e o castigará severamente[a] e o condenará para sofrer o mesmo destino dos infiéis. 47 O servo que conhece a vontade de seu senhor e não se prepara, ou não faz aquilo que ele quer, será punido com muitas chicotadas. 48 Mas o servo que não conhece a vontade de seu senhor e que faz alguma coisa que merece castigo, será punido com poucas chicotadas. Sendo assim, para todo aquele a quem se dá muito, muito será pedido; e daquelas pessoas nas quais foi depositada maior confiança, muito mais será exigido.
Divisões por causa de Jesus
(Mt 10.34-36)
49 —Eu vim para pôr fogo na terra; e como eu gostaria que já estivesse queimando! 50 Tenho que receber um batismo[b], e como estou angustiado até que ele seja realizado! 51 Vocês pensam que eu vim para trazer paz ao mundo? Não! Afirmo a vocês que eu vim para trazer divisões! 52 Pois, de agora em diante, uma família de cinco pessoas estará dividida: três contra duas e duas contra três.
53 O pai estará contra o filho
e o filho contra o pai;
a mãe estará contra a filha
e a filha contra a mãe;
a sogra estará contra a nora
e a nora contra a sogra.[c]
A época em que vivemos
(Mt 16.2-3)
54 E Jesus também disse ao povo:
—Quando vocês veem uma nuvem subindo no ocidente, logo dizem: “Vai chover!” E assim acontece. 55 E quando sentem o vento soprando do sul, vocês dizem: “Vai fazer calor!” E assim acontece. 56 Hipócritas! Se vocês sabem interpretar os sinais do céu e da terra, como é que não sabem interpretar esta época em que vivemos?
Faça as pazes com seu inimigo
(Mt 5.25-26)
57 E Jesus terminou, dizendo:
—Por que vocês não julgam por si mesmos o que é justo? 58 Se alguém, por algum motivo, quiser levá-lo a um tribunal, faça o possível para chegar a um acordo com ele durante o caminho. Faça isso para que ele não o arraste até o juiz, o juiz o entregue à polícia e a polícia o ponha na cadeia. 59 Pois eu lhe digo que você só sairá de lá após pagar tudo o que deve.

警戒門徒
12 這時，成千上萬的人聚集在一起，甚至互相踐踏。耶穌先對門徒說：「你們要提防法利賽人的酵，就是他們的偽善。 2 掩蓋的事終會暴露出來，隱藏的秘密終會被人知道。 3 你們在暗處說的，將在明處被人聽見；你們在密室裡的私語，將在屋頂上被人宣揚。
4 「朋友們，我告訴你們，不要懼怕那些殺害人的身體後再也無計可施的人。 5 我告訴你們應該懼怕誰，要懼怕上帝——祂有權終結人的生命，並把人丟在地獄裡。是的，我告訴你們，要懼怕祂！
6 「五隻麻雀不是只賣兩個銅錢嗎？但上帝連一隻麻雀也不會遺忘。 7 其實就連你們的頭髮都被數過了。不要害怕，你們比許多麻雀要貴重！
8 「我告訴你們，凡在人面前承認我的，人子在上帝的天使面前也必承認他。 9 凡在人面前否認我的，人子在上帝的天使面前也要否認他。 10 說話得罪人子的，還可以得到赦免，但褻瀆聖靈的，必得不到赦免！ 11 當人押你們到會堂，或到官員和當權者面前時，不要顧慮如何辯解，或說什麼話， 12 因為到時候聖靈必指示你們當說的話。」
無知富翁的比喻
13 這時，人群中有人對耶穌說：「老師，請你勸勸我的兄長跟我分家產吧。」
14 耶穌答道：「朋友，誰派我作你們的審判官或仲裁，為你們分家產呢？」 15 接著，祂對眾人說：「你們要小心防範一切的貪心，因為人的生命並不在於家道富足。」
16 耶穌又講了一個比喻，說：「有一個富翁，他的田裡大豐收， 17 於是心裡盤算，『我儲藏農產的地方不夠了，怎麼辦呢？』 18 於是他說，『不如把原有的倉庫拆掉，建幾座更大的，好儲藏我所有的糧食和財物！ 19 那時，我就可以對自己說，「你積存這麼多財產，一生享用不盡，現在大可高枕無憂、盡情地吃喝玩樂吧！」』 20 但上帝對他說，『無知的人啊！今晚就要取走你的命！你所預備的一切留給誰享用呢？』」
21 耶穌說：「這就是那些只顧為自己積財、在上帝面前卻不富足之人的寫照。」
不要為衣食憂慮
22 耶穌繼續對門徒說：「所以，我告訴你們，不要為生活憂慮，如吃什麼，也不要為身體憂慮，如穿什麼。 23 因為生命比飲食重要，身體比穿著重要。 24 你們看，烏鴉不種也不收，沒倉也沒庫，上帝尚且養活牠們，你們比飛鳥不知要貴重多少！
25 「你們誰能用憂慮使自己多活片刻呢？ 26 既然你們連這樣的小事都無能為力，又何必為其餘的事憂慮呢？ 27 看看百合花如何生長吧，它們既不勞苦，也不紡織，但我告訴你們，就連所羅門王最顯赫時的穿戴還不如一朵百合花！
28 「野地的草今天還在，明天就要被丟在爐中，上帝還這樣裝扮它們，何況你們呢？你們的信心太小了！ 29 你們不要為吃什麼喝什麼憂慮， 30 因為這些都是外族人的追求，你們的天父知道你們需要這些。 31 你們要尋求祂的國，祂必供給你們的需要。
32 「你們這一小群人啊，不要怕！因為你們的天父樂意把祂的國賜給你們。 33 要變賣你們的家產去賙濟窮人，要為自己預備永不破損的錢袋，在天上積攢取之不盡的財寶，那裡沒有賊偷，也沒有蟲蛀。 34 因為你們的財寶在哪裡，你們的心也在哪裡。
警醒預備
35 「你們要束上腰帶，準備服侍，要點亮燈， 36 像奴僕們等候主人從婚宴回來。主人回來一叩門，奴僕就可以立即給他開門。 37 主人回來，看見奴僕警醒等候，奴僕就有福了！我實在告訴你們，主人必束上腰帶請他們坐席，並親自服侍他們。 38 無論主人在深夜或黎明回家，若發現奴僕警醒等候，奴僕就有福了。
39 「你們都知道，一家的主人若預先知道賊什麼時候來，一定不會讓賊入屋偷竊。 40 同樣，你們也要做好準備，因為在你們意想不到的時候，人子就來了。」
忠僕和惡僕
41 彼得問：「主啊！你這比喻是講給我們聽的，還是講給眾人聽的呢？」
42 主說：「誰是那個受主人委託管理家中大小僕役、按時分糧食給他們、又忠心又精明的管家呢？ 43 主人回家時，看見他盡忠職守，他就有福了。 44 我實在告訴你們，主人一定會把所有產業都交給他管理。 45 但如果他以為主人不會那麼快回來，就毆打僕婢、吃喝醉酒， 46 主人會在他想不到的日子、不知道的時辰回來，嚴厲地懲罰[a]他，使他和不忠不信的人同受嚴刑。 47 明知主人的意思卻不準備，也不遵行主人吩咐的僕人，必受更重的責打。 48 但因不知道而做了該受懲罰之事的僕人，必少受責打。多給誰，就向誰多取；多託付誰，就向誰多要。
家庭分裂
49 「我來是要把火丟在地上，我多麼希望這火已經燃燒起來。 50 我有要受的『洗禮』，我何等迫切地想完成這『洗禮』啊！ 51 你們以為我來是要使天下太平嗎？不，我告訴你們，我來是要使地上起紛爭。 52 從今以後，一家五口會彼此相爭，三個人反對兩個人，或是兩個人反對三個人， 53 父子相爭，母女對立，婆媳反目。」
明辨是非
54 然後，祂又對眾人說：「你們看見雲從西方升起，就說，『快下雨了！』果然如此。 55 南風一起，你們就說，『天必燥熱』，你們也說對了。 56 你們這些偽善的人！既然知道觀察天色、預測天氣，為什麼不知道觀察這個世代呢？ 57 你們為什麼不自己明辨是非呢？ 58 如果你和控告你的人要去對簿公堂，要盡量在路上跟對方和解，以免被拉到審判官面前，審判官派差役把你關進監牢。 59 我告訴你，除非你付清所欠的每一分錢，否則休想出監牢。」

12 Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: “Be[a] on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.(B) 2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.(C) 3 What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.
4 “I tell you, my friends,(D) do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. 5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.(E) 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. 7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered.(F) Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.(G)
8 “I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God.(H) 9 But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned(I) before the angels of God. 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man(J) will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.(K)
11 “When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say,(L) 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”(M)
The Parable of the Rich Fool
13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” 15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”(N)
16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’
18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’
20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool!(O) This very night your life will be demanded from you.(P) Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’(Q)
21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”(R)
Do Not Worry(S)
22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. 24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them.(T) And how much more valuable you are than birds! 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life[b]? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?
27 “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor(U) was dressed like one of these. 28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!(V) 29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. 30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father(W) knows that you need them.(X) 31 But seek his kingdom,(Y) and these things will be given to you as well.(Z)
32 “Do not be afraid,(AA) little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.(AB) 33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor.(AC) Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven(AD) that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.(AE) 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.(AF)
Watchfulness(AG)(AH)
35 “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, 36 like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. 37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes.(AI) Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.(AJ) 38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak. 39 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief(AK) was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40 You also must be ready,(AL) because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”
41 Peter asked, “Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?”
42 The Lord(AM) answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? 43 It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. 44 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 45 But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk. 46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of.(AN) He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.
47 “The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows.(AO) 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows.(AP) From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
Not Peace but Division(AQ)
49 “I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a baptism(AR) to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed!(AS) 51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. 52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”(AT)
Interpreting the Times
54 He said to the crowd: “When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘It’s going to rain,’ and it does.(AU) 55 And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘It’s going to be hot,’ and it is. 56 Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?(AV)
57 “Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right? 58 As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled on the way, or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.(AW) 59 I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.”(AX)

2 For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.
3 Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.
4 And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.
5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
6 Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?

26 If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest?
27 Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
28 If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?
29 And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.
30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.
31 But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.
32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.
34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
35 Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning;
36 And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately.

38 And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.
39 And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through.

41 Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even to all?
42 And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?
43 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
44 Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.
45 But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;
46 The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.
47 And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.
48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.
49 I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?
50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!
51 Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:
52 For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.
53 The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
54 And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is.
55 And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass.
56 Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time?
57 Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?
58 When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison.
59 I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite.
