11 ¶ Y aconteció que estando él orando en un lugar, cuando terminó, uno de sus discípulos le dijo: Señor, enséñanos a orar, como también Juan enseñó a sus discípulos.
2 Y les dijo: Cuando oréis, decid: Padre nuestro que estás en los cielos; sea tu Nombre santificado. Venga tu Reino. Sea hecha tu voluntad, como en el cielo, así también en la tierra.
3 El pan nuestro de cada día, dánoslo hoy.
4 Y perdónanos nuestros pecados, porque también nosotros perdonamos a todos los que nos deben. Y no nos metas en tentación, mas líbranos de mal.
5 Les dijo también: ¿Quién de vosotros tendrá un amigo, e irá a él a medianoche, y le dirá: Amigo, préstame tres panes,
6 porque un amigo ha venido a mí de camino, y no tengo qué ponerle delante;
7 y el de dentro respondiendo, dijere: No me seas molesto; la puerta está ya cerrada, y mis niños están conmigo en la cama; no puedo levantarme, y darte.
8 Os digo, que aunque no se levante a darle por ser su amigo, sin embargo, por su importunidad se levantará, y le dará todo lo que necesite.
9 Y yo os digo: Pedid, y se os dará; buscad, y hallaréis; tocad, y os será abierto.
10 Porque todo aquel que pide, recibe; y el que busca, halla; y al que toca, es abierto.
11 ¿Y cuál padre de vosotros, si su hijo le pidiere pan, le dará una piedra?, o, si pescado, ¿en lugar de pescado, le dará una serpiente?
12 O, si le pidiere un huevo, ¿le dará un escorpión?
13 Pues si vosotros, siendo malos, sabéis dar buenas dádivas a vuestros hijos, ¿cuánto más vuestro Padre celestial dará el Espíritu Santo a los que lo pidieren de él?
14 ¶ Y estaba él lanzando un demonio, el cual era mudo; y aconteció que salido fuera el demonio, el mudo habló y la multitud se maravilló.
15 Y algunos de ellos decían: En Beelzebú, príncipe de los demonios, echa fuera los demonios.
16 Y otros, tentándolo, pedían de él señal del cielo.
17 Mas él, conociendo los pensamientos de ellos, les dijo: Todo reino dividido contra sí mismo, es desolado; y toda ciudad o casa dividida contra sí mismo, no permanecerá.
18 Y si también Satanás está dividido contra sí mismo, ¿cómo estará en pie su reino? Ya que decís que en Beelzebú echo yo fuera los demonios.
19 Pues si yo echo fuera los demonios en Beelzebú, ¿vuestros hijos en quién los echan fuera? Por tanto, ellos serán vuestros jueces.
20 Mas si por el dedo de Dios echo yo fuera los demonios, cierto el Reino de Dios ha llegado a vosotros.
21 Cuando el fuerte armado guarda su palacio, en paz está lo que posee.
22 Mas si sobreviniendo otro más fuerte que él, le venciere, le toma todas sus armas en que confiaba, y reparte sus despojos.
23 El que no es conmigo, contra mí es; y el que conmigo no recoge, desparrama.
24 Cuando el espíritu inmundo saliere del hombre, anda por lugares secos, buscando reposo; y no hallándolo, dice: Me volveré a mi casa de donde salí.
25 Y viniendo, la halla barrida y adornada.
26 Entonces va, y toma otros siete espíritus más malos que él; y entrados, habitan allí; y el postrer estado del tal hombre viene a ser peor que el primero.
27 ¶ Y aconteció que diciendo él estas cosas, una mujer de la multitud, levantando la voz, le dijo: Bienaventurado el vientre que te trajo, y los pechos que mamaste.
28 Y él dijo: Antes bienaventurados los que oyen la palabra de Dios, y la guardan.
29 ¶ Y juntándose la multitud a él, comenzó a decir: Esta generación es mala; señal busca, mas señal no le será dada, sino la señal de Jonás profeta.
30 Porque como Jonás fue señal a los ninivitas, así también será el Hijo del hombre a esta generación.
31 La reina del austro se levantará en el juicio contra los hombres de esta generación, y los condenará; porque vino de los fines de la tierra a oír la sabiduría de Salomón; y he aquí más que Salomón en este lugar.
32 Los hombres de Nínive se levantarán en el juicio contra esta generación, y la condenarán; porque a la predicación de Jonás se arrepintieron; y he aquí más que Jonás en este lugar.
33 Nadie pone en oculto la lámpara encendida, ni debajo del almud, sino en el candelero, para que los que entran vean la lumbre.
34 La lámpara del cuerpo es el ojo; pues si tu ojo fuere sincero, también todo tu cuerpo será resplandeciente; mas si fuere malo, también tu cuerpo será tenebroso.
35 Mira pues, si la lumbre que en ti hay, es tinieblas.
36 Así que, siendo todo tu cuerpo resplandeciente, no teniendo alguna parte de tinieblas, será todo luminoso, como cuando una lámpara de resplandor te alumbra.
37 ¶ Y luego que hubo hablado, le rogó un fariseo que comiera con él; y él entró y se sentó a la mesa.
38 Y el fariseo, cuando lo vio, se maravilló de que no se lavó antes de comer.
39 Y el Señor le dijo: Ahora vosotros los fariseos limpiáis lo de fuera del vaso y del plato; mas lo que está dentro de vosotros está lleno de rapiña y de maldad.
40 Locos, ¿el que hizo lo de fuera, no hizo también lo de dentro?
41 Pero de lo que os resta, dad limosna {lit. actos de misericordia}; y he aquí todo os será limpio.
42 Mas ¡ay de vosotros, fariseos! Que diezmáis la menta, y la ruda, y toda hortaliza; pero el juicio y la caridad de Dios pasáis de largo. Pues estas cosas era necesario hacer, y no dejar las otras.
43 ¡Ay de vosotros, fariseos! Que amáis las primeras sillas en las sinagogas, y las salutaciones en las plazas.
44 ¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas! Que sois como sepulcros que no se ven, y los hombres que andan encima no lo saben.
45 Y respondiendo uno de los doctores de la ley, le dice: Maestro, cuando dices esto, también nos afrentas a nosotros.
46 Y él dijo: ¡Ay de vosotros también, doctores de la ley! Que cargáis a los hombres con cargas que no pueden llevar; mas vosotros ni aun con un dedo tocáis las cargas.
47 ¡Ay de vosotros! Que edificáis los sepulcros de los profetas, y los mataron vuestros padres.
48 De cierto dais testimonio que consentís en los hechos de vuestros padres; porque a la verdad ellos los mataron, mas vosotros edificáis sus sepulcros.
49 Por tanto, la sabiduría de Dios también dijo: Enviaré a ellos profetas y apóstoles; y de ellos a unos matarán y a otros perseguirán;
50 para que de esta generación sea demandada la sangre de todos los profetas, que ha sido derramada desde la fundación del mundo;
51 desde la sangre de Abel, hasta la sangre de Zacarías, que murió entre el altar y la Casa; así os digo, será demandada de esta generación.
52 ¡Ay de vosotros, doctores de la ley! Que os tomasteis la llave de la ciencia; vosotros mismos no entrasteis, y a los que entraban impedisteis.
53 Y diciéndoles estas cosas, los escribas y los fariseos comenzaron a apretarle en gran manera, y a provocarle a que hablara de muchas cosas;
54 acechándole, y procurando cazar algo de su boca para acusarle.

11 And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.
2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
3 Give us day by day our daily bread.
4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
5 And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves;
6 For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him?
7 And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee.
8 I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.
9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?
12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
14 And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered.
15 But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils.
16 And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven.
17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth.
18 If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub.
19 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges.
20 But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.
21 When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace:
22 But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.
23 He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.
24 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out.
25 And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished.
26 Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.
27 And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked.
28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.
29 And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet.
30 For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.
31 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.
32 The men of Nineve shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.
33 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.
34 The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.
35 Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.
36 If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.
37 And as he spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat.
38 And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner.
39 And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.
40 Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also?
41 But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you.
42 But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
43 Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets.
44 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them.
45 Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying thou reproachest us also.
46 And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.
47 Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.
48 Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres.
49 Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute:
50 That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation;
51 From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation.
52 Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.
53 And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things:
54 Laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him.

The Lord's Prayer
11 Now Jesus[a] was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, (A)as John taught his disciples.” 2 And he said to them, (B)“When you pray, say:
(C)“Father, (D)hallowed be (E)your name.
(F)Your kingdom come.
3 (G)Give us (H)each day our daily bread,[b]
4 and (I)forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And (J)lead us not into temptation.”
5 And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, 6 for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; 7 and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. Jesus and Beelzebul
14 (R)Now he was casting out a demon that was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people marveled. 15 But some of them said, “He casts out demons (S)by Beelzebul, the prince of demons,” 16 while others, (T)to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven. 17 (U)But he, (V)knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls. 18 And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul. 19 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, (W)by whom do (X)your sons cast them out? Return of an Unclean Spirit
24 (AF)“When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through (AG)waterless places seeking rest, and finding none it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ 25 And when it comes, it finds the house swept and put in order. 26 Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there. And (AH)the last state of that person is worse than the first.”
True Blessedness
27 As he said these things, (AI)a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, (AJ)“Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” 28 But he said, (AK)“Blessed rather are those (AL)who hear the word of God and (AM)keep it!”
The Sign of Jonah
29 (AN)When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, (AO)“This generation is an evil generation. (AP)It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. 30 For as (AQ)Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 (AR)The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and (AS)condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, (AT)something greater than Solomon is here. 32 (AU)The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and (AV)condemn it, for (AW)they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, (AX)something greater than Jonah is here.
The Light in You
33 (AY)“No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. 34 Your eye is (AZ)the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is (BA)bad, your body is full of darkness. 35 (BB)Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. 36 If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, (BC)as when a lamp with its rays gives you light.”
Woes to the Pharisees and Lawyers
37 While Jesus[e] was speaking, (BD)a Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at table. 38 The Pharisee was astonished to see (BE)that he did not first wash before dinner. 39 And the Lord said to him, (BF)“Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of (BG)greed and wickedness. 40 (BH)You fools! (BI)Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But (BJ)give as alms those things that are within, and behold, (BK)everything is clean for you.
42 (BL)“But woe to you Pharisees! For (BM)you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect (BN)justice and (BO)the love of God. (BP)These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 43 Woe to you Pharisees! For (BQ)you love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 44 Woe to you! 45 One of (BS)the lawyers answered him, “Teacher, in saying these things you insult us also.” 46 And he said, “Woe to you (BT)lawyers also! For (BU)you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 (BV)Woe to you! 53 As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things, 54 (CP)lying in wait for him, (CQ)to catch him in something he might say.

– Cine dintre voi, care are un prieten, se duce la acesta la miezul nopţii să-i spună: „Prietene, împrumută-mi trei pâini, 6 pentru că a venit la mine, din călătorie, un prieten de-al meu şi n-am nimic ce să-i pun înainte!“?
7 Acela i-ar răspunde dinăuntru: „Nu mă deranja; uşa este deja încuiată, iar copiii mei sunt cu mine în pat; nu mă pot ridica să-ţi dau!“ 8 Vă spun că, deşi nu s-ar ridica să-i dea pentru că-i este prieten, totuşi, ca să nu se facă de ruşine[d], până la urmă tot se va ridica şi-i va da orice are nevoie.
9 Prin urmare, vă spun: cereţi şi vi se va da; căutaţi şi veţi găsi; bateţi şi vi se va deschide! 10 Căci oricine cere primeşte; cel ce caută găseşte, iar celui ce bate i se va deschide.
11 Cine este tatăl acela dintre voi care, atunci când fiul său îi cere[e] un peşte, să-i dea în schimb un şarpe? 12 Sau care, atunci când acesta îi cere un ou, să-i dea un scorpion? 13 Aşadar, dacă voi, care sunteţi răi, ştiţi să daţi daruri bune copiilor voştri, cu cât mai mult Tatăl Care este în ceruri va da Duhul Sfânt celor ce I-L cer!
Isus şi Beelzebub
14 Isus a scos un demon care era mut şi, după ce demonul a ieşit, omul care fusese mut a început să vorbească, iar mulţimile se mirau. 15 Unii dintre ei însă ziceau: „El scoate demonii cu ajutorul lui Beelzebul[f], conducătorul demonilor!“ 16 Alţii, ca să-L pună la încercare, Îi cereau un semn din cer[g].
17 Dar Isus le cunoştea gândurile, aşa că le-a zis: „Orice împărăţie dezbinată împotriva ei înseşi este ruinată şi o casă dezbinată împotriva ei înseşi se prăbuşeşte. 18 Dacă Satan este dezbinat împotriva lui însuşi, cum va dăinui împărăţia lui?! Căci voi ziceţi că Eu scot demonii cu ajutorul lui Beelzebul! 19 Şi dacă Eu scot demonii cu ajutorul lui Beelzebul, fiii[h] voştri cu ajutorul cui îi scot? De aceea ei vor fi judecătorii voştri! 20 Dar dacă Eu scot demonii cu degetul lui Dumnezeu[i], atunci Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu a venit peste voi!
21 Când cel puternic, pe deplin înarmat, îşi păzeşte propria curte, bunurile lui sunt în siguranţă. 22 Dar când vine unul şi mai puternic şi-l biruieşte, îi ia toate armele pe care s-a bazat şi apoi împarte prăzile. 23 Cine nu este cu Mine este împotriva Mea, iar cine nu adună cu Mine, risipeşte.
24 Când duhul necurat iese afară dintr-un om, el umblă prin locuri pustii, căutând odihnă, dar n-o găseşte. Atunci îşi spune: «Mă voi întoarce în casa mea, de unde am ieşit!» 25 Şi când vine, o găseşte măturată şi împodobită. 26 Atunci se duce şi mai ia alte şapte duhuri, mai rele decât el, şi intră şi locuiesc acolo, iar starea din urmă a acelui om ajunge mai rea decât cea dintâi.“
27 În timp ce Isus spunea aceste lucruri, o femeie din mulţime şi-a înălţat glasul şi a zis: „Ferice de pântecele care Te-a născut şi de sânii care Te-au alăptat!“ 28 Dar El a zis: „Ferice mai degrabă de cei ce aud Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu şi-l păzesc!“

29 În timp ce mulţimile creşteau la număr, El a început să spună: „Această generaţie este o generaţie rea. Ea caută un semn, dar nu i se va da alt semn decât semnul lui Iona. 30 Căci aşa cum Iona a fost un semn pentru niniveni, tot aşa va fi şi Fiul Omului pentru generaţia aceasta. 31 Împărăteasa din sud se va scula la judecată alături de oamenii din generaţia aceasta şi-i va condamna, pentru că ea a venit de la marginile pământului ca să asculte înţelepciunea lui Solomon, iar aici iată că se află Unul mai mare decât Solomon! 32 Bărbaţii din Ninive se vor scula la judecată alături de această generaţie şi o vor condamna, pentru că ei s-au pocăit la predica lui Iona, iar aici iată că se află Unul mai mare decât Iona!
Felinarul trupului
33 Nimeni nu aprinde un felinar ca să-l pună într-o ascunzătoare[j] (sau sub un oboroc)[k], ci îl pune pe un suport, pentru ca cei ce intră, să vadă lumina. 34 Ochiul tău este felinarul trupului tău.[l] Când ochiul tău este sănătos[m], tot trupul tău este plin de lumină, dar când ochiul tău este rău, atunci tot trupul tău este plin de întuneric. 35 Ia seama deci ca lumina care este în tine să nu fie întuneric! 36 Prin urmare, dacă tot trupul tău este plin de lumină, fără să aibă vreo parte întunecată, va fi întru totul plin de lumină, ca atunci când te-ar lumina o lampă cu lumina ei.“
Vai de voi, farisei!
37 În timp ce Isus vorbea, un fariseu L-a rugat să mănânce la el. Isus a intrat şi S-a aşezat să mănânce. 38 Fariseul s-a mirat când a văzut că Isus nu Se spălase înainte de masă.[n] 39 Domnul i-a zis:
„Voi, fariseii, curăţaţi pe dinafară paharul şi farfuria, dar pe dinăuntru sunteţi plini de jaf şi de răutate! 40 Nesăbuiţilor, oare Cel Ce a făcut partea dinafară n-a făcut şi partea dinăuntru? 41 Daţi deci milostenie din lucrurile dinăuntru, şi atunci toate vor fi curate pentru voi!
42 Dar vai de voi, fariseilor! Căci voi daţi zeciuială din mentă, din rută şi din orice zarzavat, dar neglijaţi dreptatea şi dragostea lui Dumnezeu! Pe acestea trebuia să le faceţi, iar pe acelea să nu le neglijaţi!
43 Vai de voi, fariseilor! Căci voi iubiţi să vi se dea scaunul de onoare în sinagogi şi să fiţi salutaţi în pieţe!
44 Vai de voi! Căci voi sunteţi ca mormintele care nu se văd şi peste care oamenii umblă fără să ştie![o]“
45 Unul dintre experţii în Lege I-a zis: „Învăţătorule, spunând aceste lucruri, ne insulţi şi pe noi!“
46 Dar El a zis:
„Vai şi de voi, experţi în Lege! Căci îi faceţi pe oameni să ducă poveri grele de purtat, dar voi nu le atingeţi nici măcar cu unul din degetele voastre!
47 Vai de voi! Căci voi zidiţi mormintele profeţilor pe care i-au ucis strămoşii voştri! 48 Prin urmare, voi sunteţi martori şi încuviinţaţi faptele strămoşilor voştri, căci ei i-au ucis, iar voi le zidiţi mormintele! 49 De aceea înţelepciunea lui Dumnezeu a zis: «Le voi trimite profeţi şi apostoli, însă pe unii dintre ei îi vor ucide, iar pe alţii îi vor persecuta», 50 ca să se ceară de la această generaţie sângele tuturor profeţilor, care a fost vărsat de la întemeierea lumii 51 – de la sângele lui Abel până la sângele lui Zaharia,[p] care a pierit între altar şi Templu. Da, vă spun că va fi cerut de la generaţia aceasta!
52 Vai de voi, experţi în Lege! Căci aţi luat cu voi cheia cunoaşterii; nici voi n-aţi intrat şi i-aţi împiedicat astfel şi pe cei ce intrau!“
53 Când Isus a ieşit de acolo, cărturarii şi fariseii au început să-L critice cu înverşunare şi să-I pună întrebări ostile despre multe lucruri, 54 uneltind împotriva Lui ca să-L prindă în cursă cu ceva ce ar putea spune.

În context însă, având în vedere întrebarea din v. 11 şi răspunsul din v. 13, este clar că accentul pildei cade nu pe prietenul care bate, ci pe cel din casă, care este comparat în această pildă cu Dumnezeu. În contextul cultural al vremii a cere o pâine vecinului tău la miezul nopţii nu era văzut ca o neruşinare sau îndrăzneală, însă a nu răspunde unei asemenea cereri era o adevărată neruşinare. Aşadar, accentul nu cade pe insistenţa sau îndrăzneala celui care bate, ci pe onoarea celui care răspunde, în cele din urmă fiind vorba despre Dumnezeu
