Prólogo
1 Muchos han emprendido la tarea de escribir la historia de los hechos que Dios ha llevado a cabo entre nosotros, 2 según nos los transmitieron quienes desde el comienzo fueron testigos presenciales y después recibieron el encargo de anunciar el mensaje. 3 Yo también, excelentísimo Teófilo, lo he investigado todo con cuidado desde el principio, y me ha parecido conveniente escribirte estas cosas ordenadamente, 4 para que conozcas bien la verdad de lo que te han enseñado.
Un ángel anuncia el nacimiento de Juan el Bautista
5 En el tiempo en que Herodes era rey del país de los judíos, vivía un sacerdote llamado Zacarías, perteneciente al turno de Abías. Su esposa, llamada Isabel, descendía de Aarón. 6 Los dos eran justos delante de Dios y obedecían los mandatos y leyes del Señor de manera intachable. 7 Pero no tenían hijos, porque Isabel era estéril; además, los dos eran ya muy ancianos.
8 Un día en que al grupo sacerdotal de Zacarías le tocó el turno de oficiar delante de Dios, 9 según era costumbre entre los sacerdotes, le tocó en suerte a Zacarías entrar en el santuario del templo del Señor para quemar incienso. 10 Mientras se quemaba el incienso, todo el pueblo estaba orando afuera. 11 En esto se le apareció a Zacarías un ángel del Señor, de pie al lado derecho del altar del incienso. 12 Al ver al ángel, Zacarías se quedó sorprendido y lleno de miedo. 13 Pero el ángel le dijo:
—Zacarías, no tengas miedo, porque Dios ha oído tu oración, y tu esposa Isabel te va a dar un hijo, al que pondrás por nombre Juan. 14 Tú te llenarás de gozo, y muchos se alegrarán de su nacimiento, 15 porque tu hijo va a ser grande delante del Señor. No tomará vino ni licor, y estará lleno del Espíritu Santo desde antes de nacer. 16 Hará que muchos de la nación de Israel se vuelvan al Señor su Dios. 17 Este Juan irá delante del Señor, con el espíritu y el poder del profeta Elías, para reconciliar a los padres con los hijos y para que los rebeldes aprendan a obedecer. De este modo preparará al pueblo para recibir al Señor.
18 Zacarías preguntó al ángel:
—¿Cómo puedo estar seguro de esto? Porque yo soy muy anciano y mi esposa también.
19 El ángel le contestó:
—Yo soy Gabriel, y estoy al servicio de Dios; él me mandó a hablar contigo y darte estas buenas noticias. 20 Pero ahora, como no has creído lo que te he dicho, vas a quedarte mudo; no podrás hablar hasta que, a su debido tiempo, suceda todo esto.
21 Mientras tanto, la gente estaba afuera esperando a Zacarías y preguntándose por qué tardaba tanto en salir del santuario. 22 Cuando al fin salió, no les podía hablar; entonces se dieron cuenta de que había tenido una visión en el santuario, pues les hablaba por señas; y siguió así, sin poder hablar.
23 Cumplido su servicio, Zacarías se fue a su casa. 24 Después de esto, su esposa Isabel quedó encinta, y durante cinco meses no salió de su casa, pensando: 25 «El Señor me ha hecho esto ahora, para que la gente ya no me desprecie.»
Un ángel anuncia el nacimiento de Jesús
26 A los seis meses, Dios mandó al ángel Gabriel a un pueblo de Galilea llamado Nazaret, 27 donde vivía una joven llamada María; era virgen, pero estaba comprometida para casarse con un hombre llamado José, descendiente del rey David. 28 El ángel entró en el lugar donde ella estaba, y le dijo:
—¡Salve, llena de gracia! El Señor está contigo.
29 María se sorprendió de estas palabras, y se preguntaba qué significaría aquel saludo. 30 El ángel le dijo:
—María, no tengas miedo, pues tú gozas del favor de Dios. 31 Ahora vas a quedar encinta: tendrás un hijo, y le pondrás por nombre Jesús. 32 Será un gran hombre, al que llamarán Hijo del Dios altísimo, y Dios el Señor lo hará Rey, como a su antepasado David, 33 para que reine por siempre sobre el pueblo de Jacob. Su reinado no tendrá fin.
34 María preguntó al ángel:
—¿Cómo podrá suceder esto, si no vivo con ningún hombre?
35 El ángel le contestó:
—El Espíritu Santo vendrá sobre ti, y el poder del Dios altísimo se posará sobre ti. Por eso, el niño que va a nacer será llamado Santo e Hijo de Dios. 36 También tu parienta Isabel va a tener un hijo, a pesar de que es anciana; la que decían que no podía tener hijos, está encinta desde hace seis meses. 37 Para Dios no hay nada imposible.
38 Entonces María dijo:
—Yo soy esclava del Señor; que Dios haga conmigo como me has dicho.
Con esto, el ángel se fue.
María visita a Isabel
39 Por aquellos días, María se fue de prisa a un pueblo de la región montañosa de Judea, 40 y entró en la casa de Zacarías y saludó a Isabel. 41 Cuando Isabel oyó el saludo de María, la criatura se le estremeció en el vientre, y ella quedó llena del Espíritu Santo. 42 Entonces, con voz muy fuerte, dijo:
—¡Dios te ha bendecido más que a todas las mujeres, y ha bendecido a tu hijo! 43 ¿Quién soy yo, para que venga a visitarme la madre de mi Señor? 44 Pues tan pronto como oí tu saludo, mi hijo se estremeció de alegría en mi vientre. 45 ¡Dichosa tú por haber creído que han de cumplirse las cosas que el Señor te ha dicho!
46 María dijo:
«Mi alma alaba la grandeza del Señor;
47 mi espíritu se alegra en Dios mi Salvador.
48 Porque Dios ha puesto sus ojos en mí, su humilde esclava,
y desde ahora siempre me llamarán dichosa;
49 porque el Todopoderoso ha hecho en mí grandes cosas.
¡Santo es su nombre!
50 Dios tiene siempre misericordia
de quienes lo reverencian.
51 Actuó con todo su poder:
deshizo los planes de los orgullosos,
52 derribó a los reyes de sus tronos
y puso en alto a los humildes.
53 Llenó de bienes a los hambrientos
y despidió a los ricos con las manos vacías.
54 Ayudó al pueblo de Israel, su siervo,
y no se olvidó de tratarlo con misericordia.
55 Así lo había prometido a nuestros antepasados,
a Abraham y a sus futuros descendientes.»
56 María se quedó con Isabel unos tres meses, y después regresó a su casa.
Nacimiento de Juan el Bautista
57 Al cumplirse el tiempo en que Isabel debía dar a luz, tuvo un hijo. 58 Sus vecinos y parientes fueron a felicitarla cuando supieron que el Señor había sido tan bueno con ella. 59 A los ocho días, llevaron a circuncidar al niño, y querían ponerle el nombre de su padre, Zacarías. 60 Pero su madre dijo:
—No. Tiene que llamarse Juan.
61 Le contestaron:
—No hay nadie en tu familia con ese nombre.
62 Entonces preguntaron por señas al padre del niño, para saber qué nombre quería ponerle. 63 El padre pidió una tabla para escribir, y escribió: “Su nombre es Juan.” Y todos se quedaron admirados. 64 En aquel mismo momento Zacarías volvió a hablar, y comenzó a alabar a Dios. 65 Todos los vecinos estaban asombrados, y en toda la región montañosa de Judea se contaba lo sucedido. 66 Todos los que lo oían se preguntaban a sí mismos: «¿Qué llegará a ser este niño?» Porque ciertamente el Señor mostraba su poder en favor de él.
El himno de Zacarías
67 Zacarías, el padre del niño, lleno del Espíritu Santo y hablando proféticamente, dijo:
68 «¡Bendito sea el Señor, Dios de Israel,
porque ha venido a rescatar a su pueblo!
69 Nos ha enviado un poderoso salvador,
un descendiente de David, su siervo.
70 Esto es lo que había prometido en el pasado
por medio de sus santos profetas:
71 que nos salvaría de nuestros enemigos
y de todos los que nos odian,
72 que tendría compasión de nuestros antepasados
y que no se olvidaría de su santa alianza.
73 Y éste es el juramento que había hecho
a nuestro padre Abraham:
que nos permitiría
74 vivir sin temor alguno,
libres de nuestros enemigos,
para servirle
75 con santidad y justicia,
y estar en su presencia toda nuestra vida.
76 En cuanto a ti, hijito mío,
serás llamado profeta del Dios altísimo,
porque irás delante del Señor
preparando sus caminos,
77 para hacer saber a su pueblo
que Dios les perdona sus pecados
y les da la salvación.
78 Porque nuestro Dios, en su gran misericordia,
nos trae de lo alto el sol de un nuevo día,
79 para dar luz a los que viven
en la más profunda oscuridad,
y dirigir nuestros pasos
por el camino de la paz.»
80 El niño crecía y se hacía fuerte espiritualmente, y vivió en los desiertos hasta el día en que se dio a conocer a los israelitas.

1 1-4 Muy distinguido amigo Teófilo:
Usted bien sabe que muchos se han puesto a escribir informes acerca de las cosas que han pasado entre nosotros. Las escribieron tal como nos las contaron quienes estuvieron con Jesús desde el principio. A ellos, Jesús los mandó a anunciar su mensaje.
Yo también he estudiado con mucho cuidado todo lo sucedido, y creo conveniente ponerlo por escrito, tal y como sucedió. Así, usted podrá saber si le han contado la verdad.
El ángel Gabriel y Zacarías
5 Zacarías fue un sacerdote que vivió cuando Herodes el Grande era rey de los judíos. Prestaba servicio en el templo con el grupo del sacerdote Abías. Su esposa se llamaba Isabel y era descendiente del sacerdote Aarón. 6 Isabel y Zacarías eran muy buenos y obedecían todos los mandamientos de Dios. 7 No tenían hijos, pues Isabel no había podido quedar embarazada y, además, los dos eran muy viejos.
8 Cierto día, le tocó al grupo de sacerdotes de Zacarías el turno de servir a Dios en el templo. 9 Los sacerdotes acostumbraban nombrar a uno del grupo, para que entrara en el templo de Dios y quemara incienso en el altar. Esta vez le tocó a Zacarías entrar a quemar el incienso, 10 mientras el pueblo se quedaba afuera orando.
11 De pronto, un ángel de Dios se le apareció a Zacarías al lado derecho del altar. 12 Cuando Zacarías vio al ángel, tuvo mucho miedo y no supo qué hacer. 13 Pero el ángel le dijo:
—¡No tengas miedo, Zacarías! Dios ha escuchado tus oraciones. Tu esposa Isabel tendrá un hijo, y lo llamarás Juan. 14 Su nacimiento te va a hacer muy feliz, y muchos también se alegrarán. 15 Tu hijo va a ser muy importante ante Dios. No tomará vino ni cerveza, y el Espíritu Santo estará con él desde antes de que nazca.
16 »Este niño hará que muchos en Israel dejen de hacer lo malo y obedezcan a Dios. 17 Llegará antes que el Mesías, y tendrá el mismo poder y el mismo espíritu que antes tuvo el profeta Elías. Su mensaje hará que los padres se reconcilien con sus hijos, y que los desobedientes comprendan su error y sigan el ejemplo de los que sí obedecen. Además, preparará al pueblo de Israel para recibir al Mesías.
18 Zacarías le dijo al ángel:
—Mi esposa y yo somos ya muy viejos. ¿Cómo sabré que todo pasará tal como dices?
19 El ángel le respondió:
—Yo soy Gabriel, ayudante especial de Dios. Él me envió a darte esta buena noticia. 20 Pero como no me creíste, no vas a poder hablar hasta que suceda lo que te dije.
21 Toda la gente estaba afuera, esperando a Zacarías, y se preguntaba por qué no salía del templo.
22 Cuando Zacarías salió, no podía hablar y sólo hacía señas con las manos. Entonces la gente comprendió que Zacarías había tenido una visión.
23 Al terminar su turno en el templo, Zacarías regresó a su casa. 24 Poco tiempo después, su esposa quedó embarazada; y durante cinco meses no salió de la casa, pues pensaba: 25 «¡Dios ha hecho esto conmigo para que la gente ya no me desprecie!»
El ángel Gabriel y María
26 Cuando Isabel ya tenía seis meses de embarazo, Dios mandó al ángel Gabriel a Nazaret, un pueblo de la región de Galilea. 27 El ángel llevaba un mensaje para una joven llamada María. Ella estaba comprometida para casarse con José, quien era descendiente del rey David.
28 El ángel entró a donde estaba María, la saludó y le dijo:
—¡Dios te ha bendecido de manera especial! El Señor está contigo.
29 María se sorprendió mucho al oír un saludo tan extraño, y se preguntaba qué significaba eso.
30 Entonces el ángel le dijo:
—No tengas miedo, María, porque Dios te ha dado un gran privilegio. 31 Vas a quedar embarazada; y tendrás un hijo, a quien le pondrás por nombre Jesús. 32 Este niño llegará a ser muy importante, y lo llamarán “Hijo del Dios altísimo”. Dios lo hará rey, como hizo con su antepasado David; 33 gobernará a la nación de Israel para siempre, y su reinado no terminará nunca.
34 María le preguntó al ángel:
—¿Cómo pasará esto, si aún no me he casado?
35 El ángel le contestó:
—El Espíritu Santo se acercará a ti; el Dios altísimo te cubrirá con su poder. Por eso el niño vivirá completamente dedicado a Dios, y será llamado “Hijo de Dios”. 36 Tu prima Isabel, aunque ya es muy vieja, también va a tener un hijo. La gente pensaba que ella nunca podría tener hijos, pero hace ya seis meses que está embarazada. 37 Eso demuestra que para Dios todo es posible.
38 María respondió:
—Yo soy la esclava del Señor. Que suceda todo tal como me lo has dicho.
Y el ángel se fue.
María visita a Isabel
39 A los pocos días, María fue de prisa a un pueblo de la región montañosa de Judea. 40 Entró en la casa de Zacarías y saludó a Isabel. 41 Cuando Isabel oyó el saludo, el niño saltó de alegría dentro de ella.
Isabel, llena del Espíritu Santo, 42 dijo en voz alta a María:
—¡Dios te ha bendecido más que a todas las mujeres! Y también ha bendecido al hijo que tendrás. 43 ¿Por qué has venido a visitarme, tú que eres la madre de mi Señor? 44 Tan pronto como oí tu saludo, el bebé saltó de alegría dentro de mí. 45 ¡Dios te ha bendecido porque confiaste en sus promesas!
María alaba a Dios
46 María respondió:
«¡Le doy gracias a Dios
con todo mi corazón,
47 y estoy alegre
porque él es mi Salvador!
48 »Dios tiene especial cuidado de mí,
que soy su humilde esclava.
»Desde ahora todos me dirán:
“¡María, Dios te ha bendecido!”
49 »El Dios todopoderoso ha hecho
grandes cosas conmigo.
¡Su nombre es santo!
50 ȃl nunca deja de amar
a todos los que lo adoran.
51 »Dios actúa con poder
y hace huir a los orgullosos.
52 »Quita a los poderosos de sus tronos,
y da poder a los pobres.
53 »Da cosas buenas
a los hambrientos,
pero despide a los ricos
con las manos vacías.
54 »Ayuda a los israelitas,
sus servidores,
y nunca deja de ser
bondadoso con ellos.
55 »Así lo prometió
a nuestros antepasados,

56 Y María se quedó tres meses con Isabel. Después, regresó a su casa.
El nacimiento de Juan el Bautista
57 Cuando nació el hijo de Isabel, 58 todos sus vecinos y familiares se alegraron mucho, pues vieron que Dios había sido muy bondadoso.
59 A los ocho días, vinieron a circuncidar al niño. Los que estaban allí querían ponerle Zacarías, que era el nombre de su padre. 60 Pero Isabel dijo:
—¡No! Va a llamarse Juan.
61 Ellos le dijeron:
—Ningún familiar tuyo se llama así.
62 Y por señas le preguntaron a Zacarías cómo quería llamar al niño. 63 Zacarías pidió una tabla y escribió: «Juan». Todos quedaron sorprendidos. 64 En ese mismo momento, Zacarías empezó a hablar de nuevo, y alabó a Dios.
65 Todos los vecinos se quedaron impresionados, y en toda la región montañosa de Judea no se hablaba de otra cosa. 66 Los que oían hablar del asunto se preguntaban: «¿Qué será de este niño cuando crezca?» Porque todos sabían que Dios estaba con él.
Zacarías alaba a Dios
67 Zacarías, lleno del Espíritu Santo, dio este mensaje:
68 «¡Alabemos al Dios de Israel,
porque ha venido a salvarnos!
69 »Nos ha dado un Salvador muy poderoso,
descendiente del rey David, su servidor.
70 »Esto lo había prometido
hace mucho tiempo,
por medio de sus
santos profetas:
71 que él iba a salvarnos
de nuestros enemigos
y de todos aquellos
que nos odian.
72 »Él dijo que sería bondadoso con su pueblo,
y que cumpliría su santa promesa.
73 »Él prometió a nuestro
antepasado Abraham,
74 que iba a salvarnos
de nuestros enemigos.
»Así podríamos servirle
sin ningún temor,
75 y vivir sólo para él,
practicando la justicia
todos los días de nuestra vida.
76 »Y tú, hijo mío, serás llamado:
“Profeta del Dios altísimo”.
»Tú irás delante del Mesías,
preparando a la gente para su llegada.
77 »Le dirás a su pueblo
que ya tiene salvación,
pues Dios perdona sus pecados.
78 »Dios nos ama tanto,
que desde el cielo
nos envió un Salvador,
como si fuera el sol
de un nuevo día.
79 »Él salvará a los que viven
en peligro de muerte.
»Será como una luz
que alumbra en la oscuridad,
y guiará nuestros pasos
por el camino de la paz.»
80 A medida que el niño Juan crecía, también aumentaba su poder espiritual. Y vivió en el desierto hasta el día en que Dios le ordenó llevar su mensaje al pueblo de Israel.

1 Yamang marami ang nagpilit mag-ayos ng isang kasaysayan noong mga bagay na naganap sa gitna natin,
2 Alinsunod sa ipinatalos sa atin nilang buhat sa (A)pasimula ay (B)mga saksing nangakakakita at mga (C)ministro ng salita,
3 Ay minagaling ko naman, pagkasiyasat na lubos ng pangyayari ng lahat ng mga bagay mula nang una, na isulat sa iyong sunodsunod, (D)kagalanggalang na (E)Teofilo;
4 Upang mapagkilala mo ang katunayan (F)tungkol sa mga bagay na itinuro sa iyo.
5 Nagkaroon (G)nang mga araw ni Herodes, hari sa Judea, ng isang saserdoteng ang ngala'y Zacarias, (H)sa pulutong ni Abias: at ang naging asawa niya ay isa sa mga anak na babae ni Aaron, at ang kaniyang ngala'y Elisabet.
6 At sila'y kapuwa (I)matuwid sa harap ng Dios, na nagsisilakad na walang kapintasan sa lahat ng mga utos at mga palatuntunan ng Panginoon.
7 At wala silang anak, sapagka't baog si Elisabet, at sila'y kapuwa may pataw ng maraming taon.
8 Nangyari nga, na samantalang ginaganap niya ang pagkasaserdote sa harapan ng Dios (J)ayon sa kapanahunan ng kaniyang pulutong,
9 Alinsunod sa kaugalian ng tungkuling pagkasaserdote, ay naging palad niya ang pumasok sa templo ng Panginoon at (K)magsunog ng kamangyan.
10 At ang buong karamihan (L)ng mga tao ay nagsisipanalangin (M)sa labas sa oras ng kamangyan.
11 At napakita sa kaniya ang isang anghel ng Panginoon, na nakatayo sa dakong kanan (N)ng dambana ng kamangyan.
12 At nagulumihanan si Zacarias, pagkakita niya sa kaniya, (O)at dinatnan siya ng takot.
13 Datapuwa't sinabi sa kaniya ng anghel, Huwag kang matakot, Zacarias: sapagka't dininig ang daing mo, at ang asawa mong si Elisabet ay manganganak sa iyo ng isang anak na lalake, at (P)tatawagin mong Juan ang kaniyang pangalan.
14 At magkakaroon ka ng ligaya at galak; at (Q)marami ang maliligaya sa pagkapanganak sa kaniya.
15 Sapagka't siya'y magiging dakila sa paningin ng Panginoon, at siya'y (R)hindi iinom ng alak ni matapang na inumin; at siya'y mapupuspos ng Espiritu Santo, mula pa sa tiyan ng kaniyang ina.
16 At marami sa mga anak ni Israel, ay papagbabaliking-loob niya sa Panginoon na kanilang Dios.
17 (S)At siya'y lalakad sa unahan ng kaniyang mukha na may espiritu at kapangyarihan ni Elias, (T)upang papagbaliking-loob ang mga puso ng mga ama sa mga anak, at ang mga suwail ay magsilakad sa karunungan ng mga matuwid, (U)upang ipaglaan ang Panginoon ng isang bayang nahahanda.
18 At sinabi ni Zacarias sa anghel, (V)Sa ano malalaman ko ito? sapagka't ako'y matanda na, at ang aking asawa ay may pataw ng maraming taon.
19 At pagsagot ng anghel ay sinabi sa kaniya, (W)Ako'y si Gabriel, na nananayo sa harapan ng Dios; at ako'y sinugo upang makipagusap sa iyo, at magdala sa iyo nitong mabubuting balita.
20 At narito, mapipipi ka at hindi ka makapangungusap, hanggang sa araw na mangyari ang mga bagay na ito, sapagka't hindi ka sumampalataya sa aking mga salita, na magaganap sa kanilang kapanahunan.
21 At hinihintay ng bayan si Zacarias, at nanganggigilalas sila sa kaniyang pagluluwat sa loob ng templo.
22 At nang lumabas siya, ay hindi siya makapagsalita sa kanila: at hininagap nila na siya'y nakakita ng isang pangitain sa templo: at siya'y nagpatuloy ng (X)pakikipagusap sa kanila, sa pamamagitan ng mga hudyat, at nanatiling pipi.
23 At nangyari, na nang maganap na ang mga araw ng kaniyang paglilingkod, siya'y umuwi sa kaniyang bahay.
24 At pagkatapos ng mga araw na ito ay naglihi ang kaniyang asawang si Elisabet; at siya'y lumigpit ng limang buwan, na nagsasabi,
25 Ganito ang ginawa ng Panginoon sa akin sa mga araw nang ako'y tingnan niya, (Y)upang alisin ang aking pagkaduwahagi sa gitna ng mga tao.
26 Nang ikaanim na buwan nga'y sinugo ng Dios ang anghel (Z)Gabriel sa isang bayan ng Galilea, ngala'y Nazaret,
27 Sa isang dalagang (AA)magaasawa sa isang lalake, na ang kaniyang ngala'y Jose, (AB)sa angkan ni David; at Maria ang pangalan ng dalaga.
28 At pumasok siya sa kinaroroonan niya, at sinabi, Magalak ka, ikaw na totoong pinakamamahal, (AC)ang Panginoon ay sumasa iyo.
29 Datapuwa't siya'y totoong (AD)nagulumihanan sa sabing ito, at iniisip sa kaniyang sarili kung anong bati kaya ito.
30 At sinabi sa kaniya ng anghel, Huwag kang matakot, Maria: sapagka't nakasumpong ka ng biyaya sa Dios.
31 At narito, maglilihi ka (AE)sa iyong tiyan, at manganganak ka ng isang lalake, at tatawagin mo ang kaniyang pangalang JESUS.
32 Siya'y magiging dakila, at tatawaging Anak ng (AF)Kataastaasan: at (AG)sa kaniya'y ibibigay ng Panginoong Dios ang luklukan ni David na kaniyang ama:
33 At siya'y maghahari sa angkan (AH)ni Jacob magpakailan man; at hindi magkakawakas ang kaniyang kaharian.
34 At sinabi ni Maria sa anghel, Paanong mangyayari ito, sa ako'y hindi nakakakilala ng lalake?
35 At sumagot ang anghel, at sinabi sa kaniya, Bababa sa iyo (AI)ang Espiritu Santo, at lililiman ka ng kapangyarihan ng (AJ)Kataastaasan: kaya naman ang banal na bagay na ipanganganak ay tatawaging (AK)Anak ng Dios.
36 At narito, si Elisabet na iyong (AL)kamaganak, ay naglihi rin naman ng isang anak na lalake sa kaniyang katandaan; at ito ang ikaanim na buwan niya, na dati'y tinatawag na baog.

1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled[a] among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first(B) were eyewitnesses(C) and servants of the word.(D) 3 With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account(E) for you, most excellent(F) Theophilus,(G) 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.(H)
The Birth of John the Baptist Foretold
5 In the time of Herod king of Judea(I) there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah;(J) his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly.(K) 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.
8 Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,(L) 9 he was chosen by lot,(M) according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.(N) 10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.(O)
11 Then an angel(P) of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.(Q) 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.(R) 13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid,(S) Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.(T) 14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth,(U) 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink,(V) and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit(W) even before he is born.(X) 16 He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 And he will go on before the Lord,(Y) in the spirit and power of Elijah,(Z) to turn the hearts of the parents to their children(AA) and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”(AB)
18 Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this?(AC) I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”(AD)
19 The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel.(AE) I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. 20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak(AF) until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.”
21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. 22 When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs(AG) to them but remained unable to speak.
23 When his time of service was completed, he returned home. 24 After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. 25 “The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace(AH) among the people.”
The Birth of Jesus Foretold
26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel(AI) to Nazareth,(AJ) a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph,(AK) a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid,(AL) Mary; you have found favor with God.(AM) 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.(AN) 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.(AO) The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,(AP) 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom(AQ) will never end.”(AR)
34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you,(AS) and the power of the Most High(AT) will overshadow you. So the holy one(AU) to be born will be called[b] the Son of God.(AV) 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child(AW) in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.”(AX)
38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.
Mary Visits Elizabeth
39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea,(AY) 40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.(AZ) 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women,(BA) and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord(BB) should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”
Mary’s Song(BC)
46 And Mary said:
“My soul glorifies the Lord(BD)
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,(BE)
48 for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.(BF)
From now on all generations will call me blessed,(BG)
49 for the Mighty One has done great things(BH) for me—
holy is his name.(BI)
50 His mercy extends to those who fear him,
from generation to generation.(BJ)
51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;(BK)
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.(BL)
52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.(BM)
53 He has filled the hungry with good things(BN)
but has sent the rich away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
remembering to be merciful(BO)
55 to Abraham and his descendants(BP) forever,
just as he promised our ancestors.”
56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.
The Birth of John the Baptist
57 When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.
59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise(BQ) the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, 60 but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.”(BR)
61 They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has that name.”
62 Then they made signs(BS) to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.”(BT) 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak,(BU) praising God. 65 All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea(BV) people were talking about all these things. 66 Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, “What then is this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.(BW)
Zechariah’s Song
67 His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit(BX) and prophesied:(BY)
68 “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,(BZ)
because he has come to his people and redeemed them.(CA)
69 He has raised up a horn[c](CB) of salvation for us
in the house of his servant David(CC)
70 (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago),(CD)
71 salvation from our enemies
and from the hand of all who hate us—
72 to show mercy to our ancestors(CE)
and to remember his holy covenant,(CF)
73 the oath he swore to our father Abraham:(CG)
74 to rescue us from the hand of our enemies,
and to enable us to serve him(CH) without fear(CI)
75 in holiness and righteousness(CJ) before him all our days.
76 And you, my child, will be called a prophet(CK) of the Most High;(CL)
for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,(CM)
77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation
through the forgiveness of their sins,(CN)
78 because of the tender mercy of our God,
by which the rising sun(CO) will come to us from heaven

80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit[d];(CR) and he lived in the wilderness until he appeared publicly to Israel.
