7 După ce a terminat Isus de spus toate aceste cuvinte în auzul poporului, a intrat în Capernaum. 2 Un sclav al unui centurion[a], pe care acesta îl aprecia, era bolnav, aproape de moarte. 3 Când centurionul a auzit despre Isus, i-a trimis la El pe nişte bătrâni[b] ai iudeilor, ca să-I ceară să vină şi să-i vindece sclavul. 4 Ei au venit la Isus şi L-au rugat stăruitor, spunând: „Este vrednic să-i îndeplineşti această cerere, 5 căci iubeşte neamul nostru şi el ne-a construit sinagoga!“ 6 Isus a plecat împreună cu ei, dar n-ajunsese prea departe de casă când centurionul i-a trimis pe prietenii lui ca să-I spună: „Doamne, nu Te mai deranja, căci eu nu sunt vrednic să intri sub acoperişul Meu! 7 De aceea nici nu m-am considerat vrednic să vin eu însumi la Tine! Ci spune un cuvânt pentru ca sclavul meu să poată fi vindecat! 8 Căci şi eu, la rândul meu, sunt un om pus sub autoritate şi am şi eu soldaţi în subordinea mea. Când spun unuia: «Du-te!», el se duce, iar când spun altuia: «Vino!», el vine. De asemenea, când spun sclavului meu: «Fă cutare lucru!», el îl face.“
9 Isus s-a mirat de centurion când a auzit aceste lucruri şi S-a întors spre mulţimea care-L urma, zicând: „Vă spun că nici chiar în Israel n-am găsit o credinţă aşa de mare!“ 10 Când cei trimişi s-au întors acasă, l-au găsit pe sclav însănătoşit.
Învierea fiului văduvei din Nain
11 Curând după aceea, Isus S-a dus într-o cetate, numită Nain, iar ucenicii Lui şi o mare mulţime de oameni au mers cu El. 12 Când S-a apropiat de poarta cetăţii, tocmai era dus la mormânt un mort, singurul fiu al mamei lui, care era văduvă. O mulţime destul de mare de oameni din cetate erau împreună cu ea. 13 Când Domnul a văzut-o, I s-a făcut milă de ea şi i-a zis: „Nu plânge!“
14 Apoi S-a dus şi a atins sicriul[c], iar cei care-l duceau s-au oprit. Isus a zis: „Tinere, ţie îţi vorbesc: ridică-te!“ 15 Mortul s-a ridicat şi a început să vorbească, iar Isus l-a dat mamei sale.
16 Pe toţi i-a cuprins frica şi Îl slăveau pe Dumnezeu, zicând: „Un mare profet s-a ridicat între noi!“ şi „Dumnezeu a venit în ajutorul poporului Său!“ 17 Vestea aceasta despre El s-a răspândit în toată Iudeea[d] şi în toate împrejurimile.
Isus şi Ioan Botezătorul
18 Ucenicii lui Ioan l-au anunţat pe acesta despre toate aceste lucruri. Ioan i-a chemat pe doi dintre ucenicii săi 19 şi i-a trimis la Domnul ca să-L întrebe: „Tu eşti Cel Care urma să vină sau trebuie să aşteptăm pe altul?“
20 Ei au venit deci la Isus şi I-au zis:
– Ioan Botezătorul ne-a trimis la Tine să Te întrebăm: „Tu eşti Cel Care urma să vină sau trebuie să aşteptăm pe altul?“
21 Chiar în clipa aceea Isus i-a vindecat pe mulţi de boli, de chinuri şi de duhuri rele şi multor orbi le-a dăruit vederea.
22 Isus le-a răspuns:
– Duceţi-vă şi spuneţi-i lui Ioan ceea ce aţi văzut şi aţi auzit: orbii văd, şchiopii umblă, leproşii[e] sunt curăţiţi[f], surzii aud, morţii sunt înviaţi, iar săracilor li se vesteşte Evanghelia.[g] 23 Fericit este cel care nu se poticneşte în Mine!
24 După ce au plecat mesagerii lui Ioan, Isus a început să le vorbească mulţimilor despre Ioan: „Ce aţi ieşit să vedeţi în pustie? O trestie clătinată de vânt? 25 Atunci ce aţi ieşit să vedeţi? Un om îmbrăcat în haine fine? Iată că cei ce poartă haine deosebite şi trăiesc în lux sunt în palate! 26 Atunci ce aţi ieşit să vedeţi? Un profet? Vă spun că da, şi chiar mai mult decât un profet! 27 Acesta este cel despre care a fost scris:
«Iată, îl trimit înaintea feţei Tale pe solul Meu,
care va pregăti calea înaintea Ta!»[h]
28 Vă spun că, între cei născuţi din femei, nu este nici unul mai mare decât Ioan. Totuşi, cel mai mic în Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu este mai mare decât el.“[i]
29 Tot poporul care L-a auzit, chiar şi colectorii de taxe, au recunoscut dreptatea lui Dumnezeu, fiindcă fuseseră botezaţi cu botezul lui Ioan. 30 Însă fariseii şi experţii Legii au respins planul lui Dumnezeu pentru ei înşişi, nelăsându-se botezaţi de el.
31 „Aşadar, cu cine îi voi asemăna pe oamenii acestei generaţii şi cu cine seamănă ei? 32 Ei sunt ca nişte copii care stau în piaţă şi strigă unii la alţii:
«V-am cântat din fluier, dar n-aţi dansat;
v-am cântat de jale, dar n-aţi bocit!»
33 Căci a venit Ioan Botezătorul, nici mâncând pâine, nici bând vin, iar voi ziceţi: «Are demon!» 34 A venit Fiul Omului mâncând şi bând, iar voi ziceţi: «Iată un om mâncăcios şi băutor de vin, un prieten al colectorilor de taxe şi al păcătoşilor[j]!» 35 Totuşi, înţelepciunea este îndreptăţită prin toţi copiii ei.“
Femeia păcătoasă şi pilda cu cei doi datornici
36 Unul dintre farisei L-a rugat pe Isus să mănânce cu el. Isus a intrat în casa fariseului şi S-a aşezat să mănânce. 37 Şi iată că o femeie păcătoasă din cetate, aflând că El era la masă în casa fariseului, a adus un vas de alabastru plin cu parfum. 38 Stând în spate, la picioarele lui Isus, şi plângând, ea a început să-I stropească picioarele cu lacrimile ei şi să le şteargă cu părul ei; şi-I săruta picioarele şi I le ungea cu parfum.
39 Când a văzut acest lucru, fariseul care-L chemase la masă şi-a zis: „Dacă Acesta ar fi profet, ar şti cine şi ce fel de femeie este cea care-L atinge, ar şti că este o păcătoasă!“ 40 Isus i-a zis:
– Simon, am ceva să-ţi spun!
– Spune, Învăţătorule! a răspuns el.
41 – Un anume cămătar avea doi datornici. Unul îi datora cinci sute de denari[k], iar celălalt, cincizeci. 42 Fiindcă n-aveau cu ce să plătească, i-a iertat pe amândoi. Prin urmare, care dintre ei îl va iubi mai mult?
43 Simon I-a răspuns:
– Presupun că acela căruia i-a iertat mai mult!
Isus i-a zis:
– Ai judecat drept.
44 Apoi, întorcându-Se către femeie, i-a zis lui Simon:
– Vezi femeia aceasta? Eu am intrat în casa ta şi tu nu Mi-ai dat apă pentru spălat picioarele, dar ea Mi-a stropit picioarele cu lacrimile ei şi Mi le-a şters cu părul ei. 45 Tu nu Mi-ai dat sărutare, dar ea, de când am intrat, nu încetează să-Mi sărute picioarele. 46 Tu nu Mi-ai uns capul cu untdelemn, dar ea Mi-a uns picioarele cu parfum. 47 De aceea îţi spun că păcatele ei cele multe sunt iertate, căci a iubit mult. Dar cel căruia i se iartă puţin, iubeşte puţin.
48 Apoi i-a zis femeii: „Păcatele îţi sunt iertate!“
49 Cei ce mâncau la masă împreună cu El au început să-şi zică între ei: „Cine este Acesta Care iartă şi păcatele?!“ 50 Dar El i-a zis femeii: „Credinţa ta te-a mântuit. Du-te în pace!“

Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Slave
7 (A)When He had completed all His [a]teaching in the hearing of the people, (B)He went to Capernaum.
2 Now a centurion’s slave, who was highly regarded by him, was sick and about to die. 3 When he heard about Jesus, (C)he sent some [b]Jewish elders to Him, asking Him to come and save the life of his slave. 4 When they came to Jesus, they strongly urged Him, saying, “He is worthy for You to grant this to him; 5 for he loves our nation, and it was he who built us our synagogue.” 6 Now Jesus started on His way with them; but already, when He was not yet far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to Him, “[c]Lord, do not trouble Yourself further, for I am not worthy for You to enter under my roof; 7 for that reason I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You; but just [d]say the word, and my servant [e]shall be healed. 8 For I also am a man placed under authority, with soldiers under myself; and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.” 9 Now when Jesus heard this, He was amazed at him, and turned and said to the crowd that was following Him, “I say to you, (D)not even in Israel have I found such great faith.” 10 And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.
11 Soon afterward Jesus went to a city called Nain; and His disciples were going along with Him, [f]accompanied by a large crowd. 12 Now as He approached the gate of the city, [g]a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a sizeable crowd from the city was with her. 13 When (E)the Lord saw her, He felt compassion for her and said to her, “Do not go on weeping.” 14 And He came up and touched the coffin; and the bearers came to a halt. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise!” 15 And the dead man sat up and began to speak. And Jesus gave him back to his mother. 16 (F)Fear gripped them all, and they began (G)glorifying God, saying, “A great (H)prophet has appeared among us!” and, “God has [h]visited His people!” 17 (I)And this report about Him spread throughout Judea and in all the surrounding region.
The Messengers from John
18 (J)The disciples of John also reported to him about all these things. 19 And after summoning [i]two of his disciples, John sent them to (K)the Lord, saying, “Are You the Coming One, or are we to [j]look for another?” 20 When the men came to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, [k]to ask, ‘Are You the Coming One, or are we to [l]look for another?’” 21 At that very [m]time He (L)cured many people of diseases and (M)afflictions and evil spirits; and He gave sight to many who were blind. 22 And He answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: people who were (N)blind receive sight, people who limped walk, people with leprosy are cleansed and people who were deaf hear, dead people are raised up, and (O)people who are poor have the gospel preached to them. 23 And blessed is [n]anyone who does not take offense at Me.”
24 When the messengers of John had left, He began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the [o]wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 25 [p]But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who are splendidly clothed and live in luxury are found in royal palaces! 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet. 27 This is the one about whom it is written:
28 I say to you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is [r]least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” 29 When all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they acknowledged (Q)God’s justice, (R)having been baptized with (S)the baptism of John. 30 But the Pharisees and the [s](T)lawyers rejected God’s purpose for themselves, not having been baptized by [t]John.
31 “To what then shall I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children who sit in the marketplace and call to one another, and say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a song of mourning, and you did not weep.’ 33 For John the Baptist has come neither (U)eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon!’ 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a [u]heavy drinker, a friend of tax collectors and [v]sinners!’ 35 And yet wisdom (V)is vindicated by all her children.”
The Anointing in Galilee
36 Now one of the Pharisees was requesting Him to eat with him, and He entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 (W)And there was a woman in the city who was a [w]sinner; and when she learned that He was reclining at the table in the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster vial of perfume, 38 and standing behind Him at His feet, weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears, and she wiped them with the hair of her head, and began kissing His feet and anointing them with the perfume. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he said to himself, “If this Man were (X)a prophet He would know who and what sort of person this woman is who is touching Him, that she is a [x]sinner!”
Parable of Two Debtors
40 And Jesus responded and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he [y]replied, “Say it, Teacher.” 41 “A moneylender had two debtors: the one owed five hundred [z](Y)denarii, and the other, fifty. 42 When they (Z)were unable to repay, he canceled the debts of both. So which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered and said, “I assume the one for whom he canceled the greater debt.” And He said to him, “You have judged correctly.” 44 And turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you (AA)gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You [aa](AB)gave Me no kiss; but she has not stopped kissing My feet since the time I came in. 46 (AC)You did not [ab]anoint My head with oil, but she anointed My feet with perfume. 47 For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but the one who is forgiven little, loves little.” 48 And He said to her, “(AD)Your sins have been forgiven.” 49 And then those who were reclining at the table with Him began saying [ac]to themselves, “(AE)Who is this Man who even forgives sins?” 50 And He said to the woman, “(AF)Your faith has saved you; (AG)go in peace.”

7 Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum.
2 And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die.
3 And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.
4 And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this:
5 For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.
6 Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:
7 Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.
8 For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.
9 When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
10 And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.
11 And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people.
12 Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.
13 And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.
14 And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.
15 And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.
16 And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.
17 And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.
18 And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things.
19 And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
20 When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
21 And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.
22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.
23 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
24 And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
25 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts.
26 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.
27 This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
28 For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.
30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.
31 And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?
32 They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.
33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.
34 The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!
35 But wisdom is justified of all her children.
36 And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat.
37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,
38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
39 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.
40 And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.
41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.
42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?
43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.
44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.
45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.
46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.
47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.
48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.
49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?
50 And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
