L’envoi des Douze(A)
9 Jésus réunit les Douze et leur donna le pouvoir et l’autorité de chasser tous les démons et de guérir les maladies. 2 Ensuite il les envoya proclamer le royaume de Dieu et opérer des guérisons. 3 Il leur donna les instructions suivantes : Ne prenez rien pour le voyage : ni bâton, ni sac, ni provisions, ni argent. N’emportez pas de tunique de rechange. 4 Si vous entrez dans une maison, restez-y jusqu’à ce que vous quittiez la localité. 5 Si personne ne veut vous recevoir, quittez la ville en secouant la poussière de vos pieds[a] : cela constituera un témoignage contre eux.
6 Ainsi les disciples partirent. Ils allaient de village en village. Partout, ils annonçaient la Bonne Nouvelle de l’Evangile et guérissaient les malades.
Hérode est intrigué(B)
7 Hérode, le gouverneur de la province, apprit tout ce qui se passait. Il était embarrassé. En effet, certains disaient : C’est Jean-Baptiste qui est ressuscité ! 8 D’autres disaient : C’est Elie qui a reparu. D’autres encore : C’est un des prophètes d’autrefois qui est revenu à la vie.
9 Mais Hérode se disait : Jean ? Je l’ai moi-même fait décapiter. Mais alors, qui est cet homme dont j’entends dire de si grandes choses ?
Et il cherchait à le rencontrer.
Avec cinq pains et deux poissons(C)
10 Les apôtres revinrent et racontèrent à Jésus tout ce qu’ils avaient fait. Il les prit alors avec lui et se retira à l’écart, du côté de la ville de Bethsaïda[b]. 11 Mais les foules s’en aperçurent et le suivirent. Jésus leur fit bon accueil, il leur parla du royaume de Dieu et guérit ceux qui en avaient besoin.
12 Le jour commençait à baisser. Alors les Douze s’approchèrent de lui et lui dirent : Renvoie ces gens pour qu’ils aillent dans les villages et les hameaux des environs, où ils trouveront de quoi se loger et se ravitailler, car nous sommes ici dans un endroit désert.
13 Mais Jésus leur dit : Donnez-leur vous-mêmes à manger !
– Mais, répondirent-ils, nous n’avons pas plus de cinq pains et deux poissons. Ou alors faut-il que nous allions acheter de la nourriture pour tout ce monde ?
14 Car il y avait bien là cinq mille hommes.
Jésus dit à ses disciples : Faites-les asseoir par groupes d’une cinquantaine de personnes.
15 C’est ce qu’ils firent, et ils installèrent ainsi tout le monde. 16 Alors Jésus prit les cinq pains et les deux poissons, il leva les yeux vers le ciel et prononça la prière de bénédiction ; puis il les partagea et donna les morceaux à ses disciples pour qu’ils les distribuent à la foule. 17 Tout le monde mangea à satiété. On ramassa les morceaux qui restaient ; cela faisait douze paniers.
Qui est vraiment Jésus ?(D)
18 Un jour, Jésus priait à l’écart, et ses disciples étaient avec lui. Alors il les interrogea : Que disent les foules à mon sujet ? Qui suis-je d’après elles ?
19 Ils lui répondirent : Pour les uns, tu es Jean-Baptiste ; pour d’autres, Elie ; pour d’autres encore, l’un des prophètes d’autrefois qui serait ressuscité.
20 – Et vous, leur demanda-t-il, qui dites-vous que je suis ?
Pierre prit la parole et dit : Le Messie, envoyé par Dieu.
21 Jésus leur ordonna formellement de ne le dire à personne.
22 Et il ajouta : Il faut que le Fils de l’homme souffre beaucoup et soit rejeté par les responsables du peuple, les chefs des prêtres et les spécialistes de la Loi ; il doit être mis à mort et ressusciter le troisième jour.
Comment suivre Jésus(E)
23 Puis, s’adressant à tous, il dit : Si quelqu’un veut me suivre, qu’il renonce à lui-même, qu’il se charge chaque jour de sa croix, et qu’il me suive. 24 En effet, celui qui est préoccupé de sauver sa vie, la perdra ; mais celui qui perdra sa vie à cause de moi la sauvera. 25 Si un homme parvient à posséder le monde entier, à quoi cela lui sert-il s’il se perd ou se détruit lui-même ? 26 Si quelqu’un a honte de moi et de mes paroles, le Fils de l’homme, à son tour, aura honte de lui quand il viendra dans sa gloire, dans celle du Père et des saints anges. 27 Je vous l’assure, quelques-uns de ceux qui sont ici présents ne mourront pas avant d’avoir vu le règne de Dieu.
La révélation du royaume(F)
28 Environ huit jours après cet entretien, Jésus prit avec lui Pierre, Jean et Jacques et monta sur une montagne pour aller prier.
29 Pendant qu’il priait, son visage changea d’aspect et ses vêtements devinrent d’une blancheur éblouissante. 30 Deux hommes s’entretenaient avec lui : Moïse et Elie[c] 31 qui resplendissaient de gloire. Ils parlaient de la manière dont Jésus allait achever sa mission[d] en mourant à Jérusalem.
32 Pierre et ses compagnons étaient profondément endormis, mais quand ils s’éveillèrent[e], ils virent la gloire de Jésus et les deux hommes qui étaient avec lui.
33 Au moment où ces hommes se séparaient de Jésus, Pierre lui dit : Maître, il est bon que nous soyons ici. Nous allons dresser trois tentes, une pour toi, une pour Moïse et une pour Elie.
En fait, il ne savait pas ce qu’il disait. 34 Pendant qu’il parlait encore, une nuée se forma et les enveloppa, et les disciples furent saisis de crainte lorsqu’ils entrèrent dans la nuée.
35 Une voix sortit de la nuée, qui disait : Celui-ci est mon Fils, celui que j’ai choisi. Ecoutez-le !
36 Quand cette voix eut retenti, ils ne trouvèrent plus que Jésus. Quant à eux, à cette époque, ils gardèrent le silence sur cet événement et ne racontèrent à personne ce qu’ils avaient vu.
La guérison d’un enfant habité par un démon(G)
37 Le lendemain, comme ils descendaient de la montagne, une grande foule vint à la rencontre de Jésus. 38 Du milieu de cette foule, un homme s’écria : Maître, je t’en supplie : regarde mon fils ! C’est mon enfant unique. 39 Un esprit s’empare de lui, le fait crier tout à coup, l’agite convulsivement et le fait baver ; et il ne le quitte que difficilement, en le laissant tout meurtri. 40 J’ai prié tes disciples de le chasser, mais ils n’y ont pas réussi.
41 Jésus s’exclama alors : Gens incrédules et infidèles à Dieu ! Jusqu’à quand devrai-je encore rester avec vous et vous supporter ?
Puis, s’adressant à l’homme : Amène ton fils ici !
42 Pendant que l’enfant s’approchait, le démon le jeta par terre et l’agita de convulsions. Jésus commanda avec sévérité à l’esprit mauvais de sortir, il guérit le jeune garçon et le rendit à son père. 43 Tous furent bouleversés devant la grandeur de Dieu.
L’annonce de la mort de Jésus(H)
Alors que chacun s’émerveillait encore de tout ce que Jésus faisait, il dit à ses disciples : 44 Retenez bien ce que je vais vous dire maintenant : le Fils de l’homme va être livré aux mains des hommes.
45 Mais les disciples ne comprenaient pas cette parole. Son sens leur était caché pour qu’ils ne la saisissent pas. Et ils avaient peur de demander des explications à Jésus.
L’accueil des « petits »(I)
46 Il s’éleva entre eux une discussion : il s’agissait de savoir lequel était le plus grand parmi eux. 47 Jésus, qui connaissait les pensées qu’ils avaient dans leur cœur, prit un petit enfant par la main, le plaça à côté de lui 48 et leur dit : Celui qui accueille cet enfant en mon nom m’accueille moi-même, et celui qui m’accueille, accueille aussi celui qui m’a envoyé. Car celui qui est le plus petit parmi vous, c’est celui-là qui est grand.

49 Jean prit la parole et dit : Maître, nous avons vu quelqu’un qui chassait les démons en ton nom, et nous lui avons dit de ne plus le faire, parce qu’il ne te suit pas avec nous.
50 – Ne l’en empêchez pas, lui répondit Jésus, car celui qui n’est pas contre vous est pour vous.
Jésus se dirige vers Jérusalem
L’opposition en Samarie
51 Lorsque le temps approcha où Jésus devait être enlevé de ce monde, il décida de manière résolue de se rendre à Jérusalem. 52 Il envoya devant lui des messagers. En cours de route, ils entrèrent dans un village de la Samarie pour lui préparer un logement. 53 Mais les Samaritains[f] lui refusèrent l’hospitalité, parce qu’il se rendait à Jérusalem. 54 En voyant cela, ses disciples Jacques et Jean s’écrièrent : Seigneur, veux-tu que nous commandions à la foudre de tomber du ciel sur ces gens-là, pour les réduire en cendres[g] ?
55 Mais Jésus, se tournant vers eux, les reprit sévèrement : [Vous ne savez pas quel esprit vous inspire de telles pensées ! 56 Le Fils de l’homme n’est pas venu pour faire mourir les hommes, mais pour les sauver[h].]
Ils se rendirent alors à un autre village.
L’engagement total du disciple(J)
57 Pendant qu’ils étaient en chemin, un homme vint dire à Jésus : Je te suivrai partout où tu iras.
58 Jésus lui répondit : Les renards ont des tanières et les oiseaux du ciel ont des nids ; mais le Fils de l’homme n’a pas d’endroit où reposer sa tête.
59 Jésus dit à un autre : Suis-moi !
Mais cet homme lui dit : Seigneur[i], permets que j’aille d’abord enterrer mon père.
60 Jésus lui répondit : Laisse à ceux qui sont morts le soin d’enterrer leurs morts. Quant à toi, va proclamer le royaume de Dieu !
61 Un autre encore lui dit : Je te suivrai, Seigneur, mais permets-moi d’abord de faire mes adieux à ma famille.
62 Jésus lui répondit : Celui qui regarde derrière lui au moment où il se met à labourer avec sa charrue n’est pas prêt pour le royaume de Dieu.

La missione dei dodici apostoli
9 (A)Gesù, convocati i dodici[a], diede loro potere e autorità su tutti i demòni e di guarire le malattie. 2 Li mandò ad annunciare il regno di Dio e a guarire {i malati}. 3 E disse loro: «Non prendete nulla per il viaggio: né bastone, né sacca, né pane, né denaro, e non abbiate tunica di ricambio[b]. 4 In qualunque casa entrerete, rimanete lì e da lì ripartite. 5 Quanto a quelli che non vi riceveranno, uscendo da quella città, scuotete [persino] la polvere dai vostri piedi, in testimonianza contro di loro». 6 Ed essi, partiti, andavano di villaggio in villaggio, evangelizzando e operando guarigioni dappertutto.
Perplessità di Erode
7 (B)Erode il tetrarca udì parlare di tutti quei fatti[c]; ne era perplesso, perché alcuni dicevano: «Giovanni è risuscitato dai morti», 8 altri dicevano: «È apparso Elia» e altri: «È risuscitato uno degli antichi profeti». 9 Ma Erode disse: «Giovanni l’ho fatto decapitare; chi è dunque costui del quale sento dire queste cose?» E cercava di vederlo.
Moltiplicazione dei pani per cinquemila uomini
10 (C)Gli apostoli ritornarono e raccontarono a Gesù tutte le cose che avevano fatte; ed egli li prese con sé e si ritirò in disparte verso [un luogo deserto di] una città chiamata Betsàida. 11 Ma le folle, avendolo saputo, lo seguirono; ed egli li accolse e parlava loro del regno di Dio, e guariva quelli che avevano bisogno di guarigione.
12 Or il giorno cominciava a declinare; e i dodici, avvicinatisi, gli dissero: «Lascia andare la folla, perché se ne vada per i villaggi e per le campagne vicine per trovarvi cibo e alloggio, perché qui siamo in un luogo deserto». 13 Ma egli disse loro: «Date loro voi da mangiare». Ed essi obiettarono: «Noi non abbiamo altro che cinque pani e due pesci; a meno che non andiamo noi a comprar dei viveri per tutta questa gente». 14 Perché c’erano circa cinquemila uomini. Ed egli disse ai suoi discepoli: «Fateli sedere a gruppi di una cinquantina». 15 E così li fecero accomodare tutti. 16 Poi Gesù prese i cinque pani e i due pesci, alzò lo sguardo al cielo e li benedisse, li spezzò e li diede ai suoi discepoli perché li distribuissero alla gente. 17 Tutti mangiarono e furono saziati, e dei pezzi avanzati si portarono via dodici ceste.
Pietro riconosce in Gesù il Cristo
18 (D)Mentre egli stava pregando in disparte, i discepoli erano con lui; ed egli domandò loro: «Chi dice la gente che io sia?» 19 E quelli risposero: «Alcuni dicono Giovanni il battista; altri, Elia, e altri, uno dei profeti antichi che è risuscitato». 20 Ed egli disse loro: «E voi, chi dite che io sia?» Pietro rispose: «Il Cristo di Dio». 21 Ed egli ordinò loro di non dirlo a nessuno, e aggiunse: 22 «Bisogna che il Figlio dell’uomo soffra molte cose e sia respinto dagli anziani, dai capi dei sacerdoti e dagli scribi, sia ucciso e risusciti il terzo giorno».
Il prezzo del discepolato
23 (E)Diceva poi a tutti: «Se uno vuol venire dietro a me, rinunci a se stesso, prenda ogni giorno[d] la sua croce e mi segua. 24 Perché chi vorrà salvare la sua vita la perderà, ma chi avrà perduto la propria vita per causa mia la salverà. 25 Infatti, che serve all’uomo guadagnare tutto il mondo, se poi perde o rovina se stesso? 26 Perché se uno ha vergogna di me e delle mie parole, il Figlio dell’uomo avrà vergogna di lui, quando verrà nella gloria sua e del Padre e dei santi angeli. 27 Ora io vi dico in verità che alcuni di quelli che sono qui presenti non gusteranno la morte, finché non abbiano visto il regno di Dio».
La trasfigurazione
28 (F)Circa otto giorni dopo questi discorsi, Gesù prese con sé Pietro, Giovanni e Giacomo, e salì sul monte a pregare. 29 Mentre pregava, l’aspetto del suo volto fu mutato e la sua veste divenne di un candore sfolgorante. 30 Ed ecco, due uomini conversavano con lui: erano Mosè ed Elia, 31 i quali, apparsi in gloria, parlavano della sua dipartita che stava per compiersi in Gerusalemme. 32 Pietro e quelli che erano con lui erano oppressi dal sonno; e, quando si furono svegliati[e], videro la sua gloria e i due uomini che erano con lui. 33 Come questi si separavano da lui, Pietro disse a Gesù: «Maestro, è bene che stiamo qui; facciamo tre tende: una per te, una per Mosè e una per Elia». Egli non sapeva quello che diceva. 34 Mentre parlava così, venne una nuvola che li avvolse; e i discepoli temettero quando essi[f] entrarono nella nuvola. 35 E una voce venne dalla nuvola, dicendo: «Questo è mio Figlio, colui che io ho scelto; ascoltatelo[g]». 36 Mentre la voce parlava, Gesù si trovò solo. Ed essi tacquero e in quei giorni non riferirono nulla a nessuno di quello che avevano visto.
Guarigione di un indemoniato
37 (G)Il giorno seguente, quando essi scesero dal monte, una gran folla andò incontro a Gesù. 38 Un uomo dalla folla gridò: «Maestro, ti prego, volgi lo sguardo a mio figlio: è l’unico che io abbia. 39 Ecco, uno spirito si impadronisce di lui e subito egli grida; e lo spirito lo contorce, facendolo schiumare, e a fatica si allontana da lui, dopo averlo straziato. 40 Ho pregato i tuoi discepoli di scacciarlo, ma non hanno potuto». 41 Gesù rispose: «O generazione incredula e perversa, fino a quando sarò con voi e vi sopporterò? Porta qui tuo figlio». 42 Mentre il ragazzo si avvicinava, il demonio lo gettò per terra e cominciò a contorcerlo con le convulsioni; ma Gesù sgridò lo spirito immondo, guarì il ragazzo e lo rese a suo padre. 43 E tutti rimasero sbalorditi della grandezza di Dio. Mentre tutti si meravigliavano di tutte le cose che [Gesù] faceva, egli disse ai suoi discepoli:
44 (H)«Voi, tenete bene in mente[h] queste parole: il Figlio dell’uomo sta per essere consegnato nelle mani degli uomini». 45 Ma essi non capivano queste parole che erano per loro velate, così da risultare incomprensibili, e temevano di interrogarlo su quanto aveva detto.
L’umiltà, segreto della vera grandezza; condanna dello spirito settario
46 (I)Poi cominciarono a discutere su chi di loro fosse il più grande. 47 Ma Gesù, conosciuto il pensiero del loro cuore, prese un bambino, se lo pose accanto e disse loro: 48 «Chi riceve questo bambino nel nome mio, riceve me; e chi riceve me, riceve Colui che mi ha mandato. Perché chi è il più piccolo tra tutti voi, quello è grande[i]».
49 Allora Giovanni disse: «Maestro, noi abbiamo visto un tale che scacciava demòni[j] nel tuo nome, e glielo abbiamo vietato perché non ti segue con noi». 50 Ma Gesù gli disse: «Non glielo vietate, perché chi non è contro di voi è per voi[k]».
Gesù in Samaria
51 (J)Poi, mentre si avvicinava il tempo in cui sarebbe stato tolto dal mondo, Gesù si mise risolutamente in cammino per andare a Gerusalemme. 52 Mandò davanti a sé dei messaggeri, i quali, partiti, entrarono in un villaggio dei Samaritani per preparargli un alloggio. 53 Ma quelli non lo ricevettero perché era diretto verso Gerusalemme[l]. 54 Veduto ciò, i [suoi] discepoli Giacomo e Giovanni dissero: «Signore, vuoi che diciamo che un fuoco scenda dal cielo e li consumi [come fece anche Elia]?[m]» 55 Ma egli si voltò verso di loro e li sgridò. [E disse: «Voi non sapete di quale spirito siete animati. 56 Poiché il Figlio dell’uomo non è venuto per perdere le anime degli uomini, ma per salvarle».] E se ne andarono in un altro villaggio.
Come seguire Gesù
57 (K)Mentre camminavano[n] per la via, qualcuno gli disse: «Io ti seguirò[o] dovunque andrai». 58 E Gesù gli rispose: «Le volpi hanno delle tane e gli uccelli del cielo dei nidi, ma il Figlio dell’uomo non ha dove posare il capo». 59 A un altro disse: «Seguimi». Ed egli rispose: «{Signore,} permettimi di andare prima a seppellire mio padre». 60 Ma egli[p] gli disse: «Lascia che i morti seppelliscano i loro morti; ma tu va’ ad annunciare il regno di Dio». 61 Un altro ancora gli disse: «Ti seguirò, Signore, ma lasciami prima salutare quelli di casa mia». 62 Ma Gesù {gli disse}: «Nessuno che abbia messo la mano all’aratro e poi volga lo sguardo indietro è adatto per il regno di Dio».

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(A)(B)
9 When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons(C) and to cure diseases,(D) 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God(E) and to heal the sick. 3 He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt.(F) 4 Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. 5 If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”(G) 6 So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.
7 Now Herod(H) the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed because some were saying that John(I) had been raised from the dead,(J) 8 others that Elijah had appeared,(K) and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life.(L) 9 But Herod said, “I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things about?” And he tried to see him.(M)
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(N)(O)
10 When the apostles(P) returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida,(Q) 11 but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God,(R) and healed those who needed healing.
12 Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.”
13 He replied, “You give them something to eat.”
They answered, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all this crowd.” 14 (About five thousand men were there.)
But he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 The disciples did so, and everyone sat down. 16 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them.(S) Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. 17 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah(T)(U)
18 Once when Jesus was praying(V) in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?”
19 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;(W) others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.”(X)
20 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”(Y)
Jesus Predicts His Death
21 Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone.(Z) 22 And he said, “The Son of Man(AA) must suffer many things(AB) and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(AC) and he must be killed(AD) and on the third day(AE) be raised to life.”(AF)
23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.(AG) 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.(AH) 25 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? 26 Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them(AI) when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.(AJ)
27 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”
The Transfiguration(AK)
28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James(AL) with him and went up onto a mountain to pray.(AM) 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. 31 They spoke about his departure,[a](AN) which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy,(AO) but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master,(AP) it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)
34 While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen;(AQ) listen to him.”(AR) 36 When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen.(AS)
Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy(AT)
37 The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 38 A man in the crowd called out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him. 40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not.”
41 “You unbelieving and perverse generation,”(AU) Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.”
42 Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all amazed at the greatness of God.
Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time
While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, 44 “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.”(AV) 45 But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it,(AW) and they were afraid to ask him about it.
46 An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest.(AX) 47 Jesus, knowing their thoughts,(AY) took a little child and had him stand beside him. 48 Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.(AZ) For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.”(BA)
49 “Master,”(BB) said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”
50 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”(BC)
Samaritan Opposition
51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven,(BD) Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.(BE) 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan(BF) village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John(BG) saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them[b]?”(BH) 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 Then he and his disciples went to another village.
The Cost of Following Jesus(BI)
57 As they were walking along the road,(BJ) a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”
58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man(BK) has no place to lay his head.”
59 He said to another man, “Follow me.”(BL)
But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”(BM)
61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.”(BN)
62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

4 And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.

14 For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.

22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.
23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.
25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.
27 But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.
28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.
29 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.
30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:
31 Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.
32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.
33 And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.
34 While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.
35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
36 And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.
37 And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him.
38 And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child.
39 And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him.
40 And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.
41 And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.
42 And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.
43 And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,
44 Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.
45 But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.
46 Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.
47 And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,
48 And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.
49 And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.
50 And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.
51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,
52 And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.
53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.
54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?
55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
57 And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
