Ceux qui accompagnaient Jésus
8 Quelque temps après, Jésus se rendit dans les villes et les villages pour y proclamer et annoncer la Bonne Nouvelle du royaume de Dieu. 2 Il était accompagné des Douze et de quelques femmes qu’il avait délivrées d’esprits mauvais et guéries de diverses maladies : Marie, appelée Marie de Magdala[a], dont il avait chassé sept démons, 3 Jeanne, la femme de Chuza, administrateur d’Hérode, Suzanne et plusieurs autres. Elles assistaient Jésus et ses disciples de leurs biens.
La parabole du semeur(A)
4 Une grande foule, ayant afflué de chaque ville, s’était rassemblée autour de lui. Alors Jésus leur raconta cette parabole : 5 Un semeur sortit pour faire ses semailles. Pendant qu’il répandait sa semence, des grains tombèrent au bord du chemin, furent piétinés par les passants, et les oiseaux du ciel les mangèrent. 6 D’autres tombèrent sur de la pierre. A peine eurent-ils germé que les petits plants séchèrent parce que le sol n’était pas assez humide. 7 D’autres grains tombèrent au milieu des ronces ; celles-ci poussèrent en même temps que les bons plants et les étouffèrent. 8 Mais d’autres tombèrent dans la bonne terre ; ils germèrent et donnèrent du fruit : chaque grain en produisit cent autres.
Et Jésus ajouta : Celui qui a des oreilles pour entendre, qu’il entende !
9 Les disciples lui demandèrent ce que signifiait cette parabole.
10 Il leur dit : Vous avez reçu le privilège de connaître les secrets du royaume de Dieu, mais pour les autres, ces choses sont dites en paraboles. Ainsi, bien qu’ils regardent, ils ne voient pas ; bien qu’ils entendent, ils ne comprennent pas[b].
11 Voici donc le sens de cette parabole : La semence, c’est la Parole de Dieu. 12 « Au bord du chemin » : ce sont les personnes qui écoutent la Parole, mais le diable vient l’arracher de leur cœur pour les empêcher de croire et d’être sauvées.
13 « Sur de la pierre » : ce sont ceux qui entendent la Parole et l’acceptent avec joie ; mais, comme ils ne la laissent pas prendre racine en eux, leur foi est passagère. Lorsque survient l’épreuve, ils abandonnent tout.
14 « La semence tombée au milieu des ronces » représente ceux qui ont écouté la Parole, mais en qui elle est étouffée par les soucis, les richesses et les plaisirs de la vie, de sorte qu’elle ne donne pas de fruit.
15 Enfin, « la semence tombée dans la bonne terre », ce sont ceux qui, ayant écouté la Parole, la retiennent dans un cœur honnête et bien disposé. Ils persévèrent et ainsi portent du fruit.
La parabole de la lampe(B)
16 Personne n’allume une lampe pour la cacher sous un récipient, ou la mettre sous un lit ; on la place, au contraire, sur un pied de lampe pour que ceux qui entrent dans la pièce voient la lumière. 17 Tout ce qui est caché maintenant finira par être mis en lumière, et tout ce qui demeure secret sera finalement connu et paraîtra au grand jour.
18 Faites donc attention à la manière dont vous écoutez, car à celui qui a, on donnera encore davantage ; mais à celui qui n’a pas, on ôtera même ce qu’il croit avoir.
La vraie famille de Jésus(C)
19 La mère et les frères de Jésus vinrent le trouver ; mais ils ne purent pas l’approcher à cause de la foule. 20 On lui fit dire : Ta mère et tes frères sont là-dehors et ils voudraient te voir.
21 Mais Jésus leur répondit : Ma mère et mes frères, ce sont ceux qui écoutent la Parole de Dieu et qui font ce qu’elle demande.
Plus fort que la tempête(D)
22 Un jour, Jésus monta dans un bateau avec ses disciples et leur dit : Passons de l’autre côté du lac !
Ils gagnèrent le large. 23 Pendant la traversée, Jésus s’assoupit. Soudain, un vent violent se leva sur le lac. L’eau envahit le bateau. La situation devenait périlleuse. 24 Les disciples s’approchèrent de Jésus et le réveillèrent en criant : Maître, Maître, nous sommes perdus !
Il se réveilla et parla sévèrement au vent et aux flots tumultueux : ils s’apaisèrent, et le calme se fit. 25 Alors il dit à ses disciples : Où est donc votre foi ?
Quant à eux, ils étaient saisis de crainte et d’étonnement, et ils se disaient les uns aux autres : Qui est donc cet homme ? Voyez : il commande même aux vents et aux vagues, et il s’en fait obéir !
Plus fort que les démons(E)
26 Ils abordèrent dans la région de Gérasa[c], située en face de la Galilée[d]. 27 Au moment où Jésus mettait pied à terre, un homme de la ville, qui avait plusieurs démons en lui, vint à sa rencontre. Depuis longtemps déjà, il ne portait plus de vêtements et demeurait, non dans une maison, mais au milieu des tombeaux. 28 Quand il vit Jésus, il se jeta à ses pieds en criant de toutes ses forces : Que me veux-tu, Jésus, Fils du Dieu très-haut ? Je t’en supplie : ne me tourmente pas !
29 Il parlait ainsi parce que Jésus commandait à l’esprit mauvais de sortir de cet homme. En effet, bien des fois, l’esprit s’était emparé de lui ; on l’avait alors lié avec des chaînes et on lui avait mis les fers aux pieds pour le contenir ; mais il cassait tous ses liens, et le démon l’entraînait dans des lieux déserts. 30 Jésus lui demanda : Quel est ton nom ?
– Légion[e], répondit-il.
Car une multitude de démons étaient entrés en lui. 31 Ces démons supplièrent Jésus de ne pas leur ordonner d’aller dans l’abîme. 32 Or, près de là, un important troupeau de porcs était en train de paître sur la montagne. Les démons supplièrent Jésus de leur permettre d’entrer dans ces porcs. Il le leur permit. 33 Les démons sortirent donc de l’homme et entrèrent dans les porcs. Aussitôt, le troupeau s’élança du haut de la pente et se précipita dans le lac, où il se noya.
34 Quand les gardiens du troupeau virent ce qui était arrivé, ils s’enfuirent et allèrent raconter la chose dans la ville et dans les fermes. 35 Les gens vinrent se rendre compte de ce qui s’était passé. Ils arrivèrent auprès de Jésus et trouvèrent, assis à ses pieds, l’homme dont les démons étaient sortis. Il était habillé et tout à fait sain d’esprit. Alors la crainte s’empara d’eux. 36 Ceux qui avaient assisté à la scène leur rapportèrent comment cet homme, qui était sous l’emprise des démons, avait été délivré.
37 Là-dessus, toute la population du territoire des Géraséniens, saisie d’une grande crainte, demanda à Jésus de partir de chez eux. Il remonta donc dans le bateau et repartit. 38 L’homme qui avait été libéré des esprits mauvais lui demanda s’il pouvait l’accompagner, mais Jésus le renvoya en lui disant :
39 Rentre chez toi, et raconte tout ce que Dieu a fait pour toi !
Alors cet homme partit proclamer dans la ville entière tout ce que Jésus avait fait pour lui.
Plus fort que la maladie et la mort(F)
40 A son retour en Galilée, Jésus fut accueilli par la foule, car tous l’attendaient. 41 A ce moment survint un homme appelé Jaïrus. C’était le responsable de la synagogue. Il se jeta aux pieds de Jésus et le supplia de venir chez lui : 42 sa fille unique, âgée d’environ douze ans, était en train de mourir. Jésus partit donc pour se rendre chez lui. Cependant, la foule se pressait autour de lui.
43 Il y avait là une femme atteinte d’hémorragies depuis douze ans et qui avait dépensé tout son bien chez les médecins[f] sans que personne ait pu la guérir. 44 Elle s’approcha de Jésus par-derrière et toucha la frange[g] de son vêtement. Aussitôt, son hémorragie cessa.
45 – Qui m’a touché ? demanda Jésus.
Comme tous s’en défendaient, Pierre lui dit : Voyons, Maître, la foule t’entoure et te presse de tous côtés.
46 Mais il répondit : Quelqu’un m’a touché ; j’ai senti qu’une force sortait de moi.
47 En voyant que son geste n’était pas passé inaperçu, la femme s’avança toute tremblante, se jeta aux pieds de Jésus et expliqua devant tout le monde pour quelle raison elle l’avait touché, et comment elle avait été instantanément guérie. 48 Jésus lui dit : Ma fille, parce que tu as eu foi en moi, tu es guérie[h], va en paix.
49 Il parlait encore quand quelqu’un arriva de chez le responsable de la synagogue et lui dit : Ta fille vient de mourir, n’importune plus le Maître !
50 En entendant cela, Jésus dit à Jaïrus : Ne crains pas, crois seulement : ta fille guérira[i].
51 Une fois arrivé à la maison, il ne permit à personne d’entrer avec lui, sauf à Pierre, Jean et Jacques, ainsi qu’au père et à la mère de l’enfant. 52 Ce n’était partout que pleurs et lamentations. Jésus dit : Ne pleurez pas ; elle n’est pas morte, elle est seulement endormie.
53 Les gens se moquaient de lui, car ils savaient qu’elle était morte. 54 Alors Jésus prit la main de la fillette et dit d’une voix forte : Mon enfant, lève-toi !
55 Elle revint à la vie et se mit aussitôt debout ; alors Jésus ordonna de lui donner à manger. 56 Les parents de la jeune fille étaient stupéfaits. Mais Jésus leur recommanda de ne dire à personne ce qui s’était passé.

Kumpulan orang bersama Yesus
8 Keesokan harinya, Yesus pergi melewati kota-kota dan desa-desa. Yesus menyampaikan berita dari Allah, yaitu Kabar Baik tentang Kerajaan Allah. Kedua belas rasul-Nya juga pergi bersama Dia. 2 Ada juga beberapa perempuan yang bersama Dia. Yesus sudah menyembuhkan perempuan-perempuan ini dari penyakit dan roh-roh jahat. Salah satu di antaranya adalah Maria, yang disebut Magdalena. Maria telah dibebaskan dari tujuh roh jahat. 3 Ada juga Yohana istri Khuza (pemimpin rumah tangga Herodes), Susana dan banyak perempuan lainnya. Perempuan-perempuan ini memakai uang mereka sendiri untuk mendukung pelayanan Yesus dan para rasul-Nya.
Perumpamaan tentang petani yang menaburkan benih
(Mat 13:1-17; Mrk 4:1-12)
4 Rombongan besar orang datang bersama-sama untuk menemui Yesus dari berbagai kota. Yesus menceritakan kepada mereka perumpamaan ini:
5 “Seorang petani pergi menabur benih. Ketika ia menabur, sebagian benih jatuh di pinggir jalan. Orang menginjak benih itu dan burung-burung makan semuanya. 6 Benih lainnya jatuh di tanah berbatu. Benih itu mulai tumbuh tetapi mati karena tidak ada air. 7 Sebagian benih lainnya jatuh di antara semak berduri. Benih ini tumbuh, tetapi semak duri tumbuh bersamanya dan menghimpitnya. 8 Sisa benih lainnya jatuh di tanah yang subur. Benih ini tumbuh dan menghasilkan butir-butir gandum seratus kali lipat banyaknya.”
Yesus selesai bercerita. Kemudian Ia berseru, “Siapa yang punya telinga, dengarlah baik-baik!”
9 Pengikut Yesus bertanya kepada-Nya, “Apa maksud cerita itu?”
10 Yesus menjawab, “Allah telah berikan kalian kesempatan untuk mengetahui rahasia kebenaran tentang Kerajaan Allah. Tetapi Aku menggunakan perumpamaan untuk berbicara kepada orang lain. Aku lakukan ini supaya,
‘Meskipun mereka memperhatikan,
tetapi mereka tidak melihat.
Meskipun mereka dengar,
tetapi mereka tidak mengerti.’”(A)
Yesus menjelaskan perumpamaan tentang benih
(Mat 13:18-23; Mrk 4:13-20)
11 “Inilah maksud cerita itu: benih itu adalah ajaran Allah. 12 Ada orang yang seperti benih yang jatuh di pinggir jalan. Mereka mendengar ajaran Allah, tetapi kemudian Iblis datang dan membuat mereka berhenti merenungkannya. Ini membuat mereka terhalang untuk percaya dan diselamatkan. 13 Orang lain adalah seperti benih yang jatuh di tanah berbatu. Mereka mendengar ajaran Allah dan menerimanya dengan senang hati. Tetapi mereka tidak mendalaminya sungguh-sungguh. Mereka percaya sebentar saja. Tetapi ketika kesulitan datang, mereka segera berpaling dari Allah.
14 Bagaimana dengan benih-benih yang jatuh di antara semak berduri? Itu seperti orang yang mendengar ajaran Allah, tetapi mereka membiarkan kecemasan, kekayaan dan kesenangan hidup memperlambat pertumbuhannya. Jadi, tidak memberikan hasil baik dalam hidup mereka. 15 Dan bagaimana dengan benih-benih yang jatuh di tanah yang subur? Mereka adalah seperti orang yang mendengar ajaran Allah dengan hati yang baik dan jujur. Mereka mematuhi ajaran itu dan menghasilkan buah yang baik dengan sabar.”
Perhatikanlah cahaya itu
(Mrk 4:21-25)
16 “Tidak ada orang menyalakan lampu, lalu menutupinya dengan ember air atau menyembunyikannya di bawah tempat tidur. Sebaliknya, mereka meletakkan lampu itu di tempat lampu yang tinggi supaya orang yang datang bisa mendapat cahaya yang cukup untuk melihat. 17 Semua yang tersembunyi akan terbongkar, dan semua orang bisa melihatnya. 18 Jadi, perhatikanlah baik-baik apa yang kamu dengar. Mereka yang mengerti akan mendapat lebih banyak lagi. Tetapi mereka yang tidak mengerti akan kehilangan meskipun apa yang pikir adalah miliknya.”
Pengikut Yesus adalah keluarga-Nya yang sejati
(Mat 12:46-50; Mrk 3:31-35)
19 Ibu dan saudara-saudara Yesus datang mengunjungi-Nya. Tetapi mereka tidak bisa mendekati-Nya, sebab banyak sekali orang di situ. 20 Seorang memberi tahu Yesus, “Ibu dan saudara-saudara-Mu ada di luar. Mereka ingin bertemu dengan-Mu.”
21 Yesus menjawab kepadanya, “Ibu dan saudara-saudara-Ku adalah mereka yang mendengar ajaran Allah dan melakukannya.”
Yesus menghentikan badai
(Mat 8:23-27; Mrk 4:35-41)
22 Suatu hari Yesus naik perahu dengan pengikut-Nya. Ia bilang kepada mereka, “Mari kita seberangi danau ini.” Lalu mereka mulai menyeberangi. 23 Sementara mereka berlayar, Yesus tertidur. Badai besar melanda danau itu dan perahu itu mulai dipenuhi air. Mereka berada dalam bahaya. 24 Mereka mendekati Yesus dan membangunkan-Nya. Kata mereka, “Guru! Guru! Kita akan tenggelam!”
Yesus bangun. Ia memberi perintah kepada angin ribut dan ombak. Angin berhenti dan danau menjadi tenang. 25 Ia berkata kepada pengikut-Nya, “Di manakah imanmu?”
Mereka sangat takut dan takjub. Mereka saling berkata, “Orang macam apakah ini? Ia perintahkan angin dan air, dan mereka mematuhi-Nya.”
Yesus membebaskan orang dari roh jahat
(Mat 8:28-34; Mrk 5:1-20)
26 Yesus dan pengikut-Nya berlayar menyeberangi danau. Mereka berlayar ke daerah di mana orang Gerasa[a] tinggal, di seberang Galilea. 27 Pada waktu Yesus keluar dari perahu, seorang laki-laki dari kota itu menemui Dia. Orang itu kerasukan roh jahat. Sudah lama sekali ia tidak mengenakan pakaian. Ia tidak tinggal di rumah tetapi di gua-gua di mana orang mati dikuburkan.
28-29 Roh jahat sering merasuki orang itu, dan ia telah dipenjarakan dengan tangan dan kakinya dirantai. Tetapi ia selalu memutuskan rantai tersebut. Roh jahat itu memaksanya pergi ke tempat-tempat yang terpencil. Yesus memerintahkan roh jahat itu keluar dari orang itu. Ketika orang itu melihat Yesus, ia sujud di hadapan-Nya, berteriak dengan kerasnya, “Engkau mau apa dengan aku, Yesus, Anak Allah yang Mahatinggi? Aku mohon, janganlah hukum aku!”
30 Yesus bertanya kepadanya, “Siapa namamu?” Orang itu menjawab, “Legion.”[b] (Ia mengaku namanya adalah “Legion” karena banyak roh jahat yang masuk ke dalamnya.) 31 Roh-roh jahat itu memohon kepada Yesus agar tidak mengirim mereka ke dalam jurang maut. 32 Di atas bukit itu ada kawanan babi yang sedang makan. Roh-roh jahat itu memohon Yesus untuk mengijinkan mereka masuk ke dalam kawanan babi itu. Maka Yesus mengijinkan mereka melakukan itu. 33 Lalu roh-roh jahat itu keluar dari orang itu dan masuk ke dalam babi-babi. Kawanan babi tersebut berlari dari atas bukit masuk ke dalam danau, dan semuanya mati tenggelam.
34 Orang-orang yang menjaga kawanan babi itu kabur dan menceritakan kejadian itu di desa-desa dan kota-kota. 35 Banyak orang pergi untuk melihat apa yang telah terjadi. Ketika mereka menemui Yesus, mereka melihat laki-laki itu sedang duduk di dekat kaki Yesus. Ia telah berpakaian dan sudah waras lagi; karena roh-roh jahat itu telah pergi. Hal ini membuat mereka menjadi takut. 36 Orang-orang yang lihat kejadian ini, lalu menceritakan kepada mereka bagaimana Yesus telah membuat orang itu baik lagi. 37 Semua orang yang tinggal di daerah sekitar Gerasa memohon Yesus untuk pergi dari situ karena mereka sangat takut.
Lalu Yesus naik ke perahu dan kembali ke Galilea. 38 Orang yang telah Ia sembukkan memohon untuk pergi bersama-Nya. Tetapi Yesus menyuruh dia pergi, kata-Nya, 39 “Pulanglah dan ceritakan kepada semua orang apa yang telah dilakukan Allah kepadamu.”
Maka orang itu pergi ke seluruh kota menceritakan apa yang sudah dilakukan Yesus kepadanya.
Yesus menghidupkan seorang anak gadis dan menyembuhkan seorang perempuan
(Mat 9:18-26; Mrk 5:21-43)
40 Ketika Yesus kembali ke Galilea, orang-orang menyambut Dia. Mereka sedang menunggu-Nya. 41-42 Seorang laki-laki bernama Yairus datang kepada-Nya. Ia adalah kepala rumah ibadah. Ia hanya mempunyai seorang anak perempuan. Anak itu berumur dua belas tahun, dan sudah hampir mati. Jadi, Yairus sujud menyembah di kaki Yesus dan memohon kepada-Nya supaya datang ke rumahnya.
Ketika Yesus sedang dalam perjalanan ke rumah Yairus, banyak orang mengerumuni Dia. 43 Ada seorang perempuan yang sudah menderita pendarahan selama dua belas tahun. Ia sudah menghabiskan semua uangnya untuk membayar dokter-dokter,[c] tetapi tidak ada dokter yang bisa menyembuhkannya. 44 Perempuan itu mendekati Yesus dari belakang dan menyentuh ujung jubah-Nya. Saat itu juga, pendarahannya berhenti. 45 Lalu Yesus berkata, “Siapa yang menyentuh Aku?”
Mereka semua katakan mereka tidak menyentuh-Nya. Lalu Petrus berkata, “Guru, banyak sekali orang mengelilingi-Mu dan mendorong-Mu.”
46 Tetapi Yesus berkata, “Seseorang telah menyentuh-Ku. Aku merasa ada kuasa yang keluar dari-Ku.” 47 Ketika perempuan itu menyadari bahwa ia tidak dapat menyembunyikan diri, ia maju ke depan dengan gemetar. Ia bersujud di depan Yesus. Selagi semua orang mendengar, ia menjelaskan mengapa ia menyentuh Yesus. Kemudian ia berkata bahwa ia langsung sembuh ketika ia menyentuh Yesus. 48 Yesus berkata kepadanya, “Anak-Ku, kamu sembuh karena kamu percaya. Pergilah dalam damai.”
49 Ketika Yesus masih berbicara, seorang dari rumah kepala ibadah datang dan berkata, “Anakmu sudah meninggal! Jangan repotkan Guru lagi.”
50 Ketika Yesus mendengar perkataan orang itu, Ia berkata kepada Yairus, “Jangan takut! Percaya saja dan anakmu akan selamat.”
51 Yesus sampai di rumah Yairus. Ia hanya perbolehkan Petrus, Yohanes dan Yakobus, serta ayah dan ibu anak itu masuk dengan Dia. 52 Semua orang sedang menangis dan berdukacita karena anak perempuan itu sudah mati. Tetapi Yesus berkata, “Jangan menangis. Ia tidak mati. Ia lagi tidur.”
53 Orang-orang menertawakan-Nya, karena mereka tahu anak itu sudah mati. 54 Tetapi Yesus memegang tangan anak itu dan memanggilnya, “Nak, berdirilah!” 55 Roh anak itu kembali kepadanya, dan seketika itu juga ia berdiri. Yesus bilang, “Kasih dia sesuatu untuk dimakan.” 56 Orang tuanya sangat takjub. Yesus melarang mereka untuk memberitahukan kepada siapa saja tentang kejadian itu.

The Parable of the Sower(A)
8 After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God.(B) The Twelve were with him, 2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene)(C) from whom seven demons had come out; 3 Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s(D) household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.
4 While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable: 5 “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds ate it up. 6 Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.”
When he said this, he called out, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”(E)
9 His disciples asked him what this parable meant. 10 He said, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you,(F) but to others I speak in parables, so that,
11 “This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.(H) 12 Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. 13 Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away.(I) 14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches(J) and pleasures, and they do not mature. 15 But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.
A Lamp on a Stand
16 “No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.(K) 17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.(L) 18 Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them.”(M)
Jesus’ Mother and Brothers(N)
19 Now Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. 20 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers(O) are standing outside, wanting to see you.”
21 He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.”(P)
Jesus Calms the Storm(Q)(R)
22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.
24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master,(S) we’re going to drown!”
He got up and rebuked(T) the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.(U) 25 “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples.
In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”
Jesus Restores a Demon-Possessed Man(V)(W)
26 They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes,[b] which is across the lake from Galilee. 27 When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me,(X) Jesus, Son of the Most High God?(Y) I beg you, don’t torture me!” 29 For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.
30 Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”
“Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. 31 And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.(Z)
32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. 33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake(AA) and was drowned.
34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, 35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet,(AB) dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed(AC) man had been cured. 37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them,(AD) because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left.
38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.
Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(AE)
40 Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. 41 Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader,(AF) came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house 42 because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying.
As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. 43 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding(AG) for twelve years,[c] but no one could heal her. 44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak,(AH) and immediately her bleeding stopped.
45 “Who touched me?” Jesus asked.
When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master,(AI) the people are crowding and pressing against you.”
46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me;(AJ) I know that power has gone out from me.”(AK)
47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. 48 Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you.(AL) Go in peace.”(AM)
49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader.(AN) “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.”
50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”
51 When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James,(AO) and the child’s father and mother. 52 Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning(AP) for her. “Stop wailing,” Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.”(AQ)
53 They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But he took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!”(AR) 55 Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. 56 Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.(AS)
