⁵ When he realizes his liability in one of these cases, he shall confess the sin of which he is guilty.

⁴⁰ They will confess their guilt and the guilt of their ancestors because of the unfaithfulness that they committed against me, and also because they remained hostile to me.

Compensation for Wrongdoing

⁵ The Lord spoke to Moses and told him ⁶ to tell the Israelites this:

Whenever a man or a woman commits any wrong against another person and so in this way is unfaithful to the Lord, that person must be held responsible. ⁷ Such people are to confess the wrong which they have done. They are to make full restitution for their guilt, then add one fifth of its value on top of that and give it to the person they have wronged.

¹⁰ Finally the people of Israel called out to the Lord, “We have sinned against you, for we have forsaken our God and have served the Baals.”

¹⁵ But the people of Israel said to the Lord, “We have sinned. Do with us whatever seems good in your eyes, but please save us today.”
