Verbod om bloed te eten

17 1,2 De Here gaf Mozes de volgende aanvullende voorschriften voor Aäron en de priesters en het gehele volk Israël: 3,4 ‘Iedere Israëliet die een os, lam of geit slacht in of buiten het kamp in plaats van het dier bij de ingang van de tabernakel te brengen, is schuldig omdat hij bloed heeft vergoten. Hij zal uit het volk worden verstoten. 5 Het is de bedoeling dat de Israëlieten hun offers niet meer in het open veld brengen, maar ze naar de priester brengen bij de ingang van de tabernakel, zodat deze het als een vredeoffer aan de Here kan offeren.

6 De priester kan dan het bloed sprenkelen op het altaar van de Here bij de ingang van de tabernakel en het vet als een aangenaam offer voor de Here verbranden. 7 De mensen zullen dan niet meer in het veld aan boze geesten offeren en deze daardoor overspelig nalopen. Dit zal een altijd geldende wet voor u zijn, van generatie op generatie. 8,9 Ik herhaal: ieder, zowel een Israëliet als een buitenlander die bij u woont, die een brandoffer of een ander soort offer ergens anders brengt dan bij de ingang van de tabernakel, waar het aan de Here wordt geofferd, zal worden verstoten.

10 En Ik zal mijn gelaat keren tegen ieder, ongeacht Israëliet of buitenlander die bij u woont, die—in welke vorm dan ook—bloed eet. Ik zal hem verstoten uit het volk. 11 Want de ziel van het vlees zit in het bloed en Ik heb u het bloed gegeven om op het altaar te sprenkelen als verzoening voor uw zielen, het is het bloed dat voor de ziel verzoening doet. 12 Dat is de bedoeling van mijn wet voor het volk Israël dat noch zij noch een vreemdeling die bij hen woont, bloed mogen eten. 13 Ieder die op jacht gaat (zowel Israëliet als buitenlander die bij u woont) en een dier of een vogel doodt die mag worden gegeten, moet het bloed laten weglopen en het bedekken met aarde. 14 Want in het bloed is de ziel. Daarom heb Ik het volk Israël gezegd nooit bloed te eten, want de ziel van elke vogel en elk dier is in zijn bloed. Daarom moet ieder die bloed eet, worden verstoten. 15 En als iemand, Israëliet of buitenlander, eet van het lichaam van een dier dat is gestorven of door een wild dier is verscheurd, moet hij zijn kleren wassen en zich baden en hij zal onrein zijn tot de avond, daarna is hij weer rein. 16 Maar als hij zijn kleren niet wast en zich niet baadt, zal hij zelf de gevolgen van zijn zonde dragen.’

Eating Blood Forbidden

17 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Speak to Aaron and his sons(A) and to all the Israelites and say to them: ‘This is what the Lord has commanded: 3 Any Israelite who sacrifices an ox,[a] a lamb(B) or a goat(C) in the camp or outside of it 4 instead of bringing it to the entrance to the tent of meeting(D) to present it as an offering to the Lord in front of the tabernacle of the Lord(E)—that person shall be considered guilty of bloodshed; they have shed blood and must be cut off from their people.(F) 5 This is so the Israelites will bring to the Lord the sacrifices they are now making in the open fields. They must bring them to the priest, that is, to the Lord, at the entrance to the tent of meeting and sacrifice them as fellowship offerings.(G) 6 The priest is to splash the blood against the altar(H) of the Lord(I) at the entrance to the tent of meeting and burn the fat as an aroma pleasing to the Lord.(J) 7 They must no longer offer any of their sacrifices to the goat idols[b](K) to whom they prostitute themselves.(L) This is to be a lasting ordinance(M) for them and for the generations to come.’(N)

8 “Say to them: ‘Any Israelite or any foreigner residing among them who offers a burnt offering or sacrifice 9 and does not bring it to the entrance to the tent(O) of meeting(P) to sacrifice it to the Lord(Q) must be cut off from the people of Israel.

10 “‘I will set my face against any Israelite or any foreigner residing among them who eats blood,(R) and I will cut them off from the people. 11 For the life of a creature is in the blood,(S) and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life.[c](T) 12 Therefore I say to the Israelites, “None of you may eat blood, nor may any foreigner residing among you eat blood.”

13 “‘Any Israelite or any foreigner residing among you who hunts any animal or bird that may be eaten must drain out the blood and cover it with earth,(U) 14 because the life of every creature is its blood. That is why I have said to the Israelites, “You must not eat the blood of any creature, because the life of every creature is its blood; anyone who eats it must be cut off.”(V)

15 “‘Anyone, whether native-born or foreigner, who eats anything(W) found dead or torn by wild animals(X) must wash their clothes and bathe with water,(Y) and they will be ceremonially unclean till evening;(Z) then they will be clean. 16 But if they do not wash their clothes and bathe themselves, they will be held responsible.(AA)’”

The Place of Sacrifice

17 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to Aaron and his sons and to all the people of Israel and say to them, This is the thing that the Lord has commanded. 3 If any one of the house of Israel (A)kills an ox or a lamb or a goat in the camp, or kills it outside the camp, 4 and (B)does not bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting to offer it as a gift to the Lord in front of the tabernacle of the Lord, bloodguilt shall be imputed to that man. He has shed blood, and that man (C)shall be cut off from among his people. 5 This is to the end that the people of Israel may bring their sacrifices that they sacrifice (D)in the open field, that they may bring them to the Lord, to the priest at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and sacrifice them (E)as sacrifices of peace offerings to the Lord. 6 And the priest shall (F)throw the blood on the altar of the Lord at the entrance of the tent of meeting and burn the fat (G)for a pleasing aroma to the Lord. 7 So they shall no more sacrifice their sacrifices to goat demons, after whom they (H)whore. This shall be a statute forever for them throughout their generations.

8 “And you shall say to them, Any one of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who sojourn among them, who (I)offers a burnt offering or sacrifice 9 and (J)does not bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting to offer it to the Lord, (K)that man shall be cut off from his people.

Laws Against Eating Blood

10 “If any one of the house of Israel or of the strangers who sojourn among them (L)eats any blood, I will (M)set my face against that person who eats blood and will cut him off from among his people. 11 (N)For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar (O)to make atonement for your souls, (P)for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life. 12 Therefore I have said to the people of Israel, No person among you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger who sojourns among you eat blood.

13 “Any one also of the people of Israel, or of the strangers who sojourn among them, who takes in hunting any beast or bird that may be eaten shall (Q)pour out its blood and (R)cover it with earth. 14 For the life of every creature[a] is its (S)blood: its blood is its life.[b] Therefore I have said to the people of Israel, You shall not eat the blood of any creature, for the life of every creature is its blood. Whoever eats it shall be cut off. 15 (T)And every person who eats what dies of itself or what is torn by beasts, (U)whether he is a native or a sojourner, (V)shall wash his clothes and (W)bathe himself in water and be unclean until the evening; then he shall be clean. 16 But if he does not wash them or bathe his flesh, (X)he shall bear his iniquity.”
