Cleansing From Defiling Molds

33 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 34 “When you enter the land of Canaan,(A) which I am giving you as your possession,(B) and I put a spreading mold in a house in that land, 35 the owner of the house must go and tell the priest, ‘I have seen something that looks like a defiling mold in my house.’ 36 The priest is to order the house to be emptied before he goes in to examine the mold, so that nothing in the house will be pronounced unclean. After this the priest is to go in and inspect the house. 37 He is to examine the mold on the walls, and if it has greenish or reddish(C) depressions that appear to be deeper than the surface of the wall, 38 the priest shall go out the doorway of the house and close it up for seven days.(D) 39 On the seventh day(E) the priest shall return to inspect the house. If the mold has spread on the walls, 40 he is to order that the contaminated stones be torn out and thrown into an unclean place outside the town.(F) 41 He must have all the inside walls of the house scraped and the material that is scraped off dumped into an unclean place outside the town. 42 Then they are to take other stones to replace these and take new clay and plaster the house.

43 “If the defiling mold reappears in the house after the stones have been torn out and the house scraped and plastered, 44 the priest is to go and examine it and, if the mold has spread in the house, it is a persistent defiling mold; the house is unclean.(G) 45 It must be torn down—its stones, timbers and all the plaster—and taken out of the town to an unclean place.

46 “Anyone who goes into the house while it is closed up will be unclean till evening.(H) 47 Anyone who sleeps or eats in the house must wash their clothes.(I)

48 “But if the priest comes to examine it and the mold has not spread after the house has been plastered, he shall pronounce the house clean,(J) because the defiling mold is gone. 49 To purify the house he is to take two birds and some cedar wood, scarlet yarn and hyssop.(K) 50 He shall kill one of the birds over fresh water in a clay pot.(L) 51 Then he is to take the cedar wood, the hyssop,(M) the scarlet yarn and the live bird, dip them into the blood of the dead bird and the fresh water, and sprinkle the house seven times.(N) 52 He shall purify the house with the bird’s blood, the fresh water, the live bird, the cedar wood, the hyssop and the scarlet yarn. 53 Then he is to release the live bird in the open fields(O) outside the town. In this way he will make atonement for the house, and it will be clean.(P)

54 These are the regulations for any defiling skin disease,(Q) for a sore, 55 for defiling molds(R) in fabric or in a house, 56 and for a swelling, a rash or a shiny spot,(S) 57 to determine when something is clean or unclean.

These are the regulations for defiling skin diseases and defiling molds.(T)

Instructions for Cleansing Houses

33 Then[a] Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 34 “When you come into the land of Canaan, which I am about to give to you as your possession, and I put mildew[b] in a house in the land of your possession, 35 then[c] the one who owns the house[d] shall come and tell the priest, saying, ‘It appears to me that an infection is in the house.’ 36 And the priest shall issue a command, and they shall clear out the house before the priest comes to examine the infection, so that[e] all that is in the house might not become unclean; and afterward[f] the priest shall go to examine the house. 37 And he shall examine the infection, and if[g] the infection on the house’s wall has yellowish-green or reddish spots and its appearance is deeper than the surface of[h] the wall, 38 then[i] the priest shall go out from the house to the house’s entrance, and he shall confine[j] the house for seven days. 39 And the priest shall return on the seventh day, and he shall examine the infection,[k] and if[l] the infection has spread on the house’s wall, 40 the priest shall issue a command and they shall remove the stones on which is the infection, and they shall throw them outside the city[m] on an unclean place. 41 Then[n] they[o] shall scrape off the plaster[p] from all around the house, and they shall pour out the plaster,[q] which they scraped off, outside the city[r] on an unclean place. 42 And they shall take other stones, and they shall put[s] them in place of those stones, and they[t] shall take other plaster,[u] and they[v] shall replaster[w] the house.

43 “But[x] if the infection should return and it breaks out in the house after they[y] have removed the stones and after scraping off the plaster[z] of the house and after it has been replastered,[aa] 44 then[ab] the priest shall come, and he shall examine the infection,[ac] and if[ad] the infection has spread in the house, it is a destructive mildew[ae] in the house—it is unclean. 45 So[af] he shall break down the house, its stones and its wood and all of the house’s plaster,[ag] and he shall bring it all[ah] outside the city[ai] to an unclean place. 46 And the person who enters into the house during all the days that he[aj] confined[ak] it shall become unclean until the evening. 47 And the person who sleeps in the house must wash his garments, and the person who eats in the house shall wash his garments.

48 “And if the priest comes again and examines the house[al] and if[am] the infection has not spread in the house after being replastered,[an] then[ao] the priest shall pronounce the house clean, because the infection is healed. 49 And he shall take two birds and cedar wood[ap] and a crimson thread[aq] and hyssop to cleanse the house; 50 and he shall slaughter the first bird over fresh water on a clay vessel. 51 Then[ar] he shall take the cedar wood[as] and the hyssop and the crimson thread[at] and the living bird, and he shall dip them in the slaughtered bird’s blood and in the fresh water, and he shall spatter them[au] on the house seven times. 52 Thus[av] he shall purify the house with the bird’s blood and with the fresh water and with the living bird and with the cedar wood[aw] and with the hyssop and with the crimson thread.[ax] 53 And he shall send the living bird outside the city[ay] into the open field;[az] and so he shall make atonement for the house, and it shall be clean.

54 “This is the instruction for any infectious skin disease and for the diseased area of skin, 55 and for a mildew[ba] of the garment and for the house, 56 and for the swelling and for the epidermal eruption and for the spot, 57 to teach when something is unclean and when something is clean.[bb] This is the regulation of the infectious skin disease.”
