Contamination of Clothing

47 When an outbreak of mold[a] occurs on any piece of clothing, on woolen or linen cloth, 48 on the warp or the woof[b] of linen or wool, on leather or anything made of leather, 49 and if the contamination[c] on the cloth or the leather, or in the warp or the woof, or on any article made of leather is bright yellow-green or bright red, it is an outbreak of mold. It shall be shown to the priest. 50 The priest shall examine the contaminated area and shall quarantine the contaminated article for seven days. 51 On the seventh day he shall examine the contaminated article. If the contamination has spread on the cloth, or in the warp or the woof, or on the leather, or on any article that is made of leather, the contamination is a persistent[d] mold. It is unclean. 52 He must burn the clothing and the warp or the woof, whether it is made of wool or of linen, or whether it is any article made of leather that has the contamination on it. Because it has a persistent mold, it must be burned in fire. 53 But if the priest examines it and discovers that the contamination has not spread on the clothing, or in the warp or the woof, or on any leather article, 54 the priest shall command that the material with the contamination on it is to be washed, and he shall quarantine it for seven days a second time. 55 Then after the contaminated material has been laundered, and the priest examines it, even if he discovers that the contamination has not changed its appearance and the contamination has not spread, it is unclean. You must burn it in fire, whether the rot is on its front or its back. 56 But if the priest examines it and discovers that the contamination has faded after it has been washed, he shall tear it out of the clothing or the leather or the warp or the woof. 57 If it reappears in the clothing or the warp or the woof or any leather article, it is a new outbreak. You must burn the material with the contamination on it with fire. 58 If, however, the contamination vanishes from the clothing, or the warp or the woof, or any leather article that you wash, it shall be washed a second time; then, it will be clean.

59 These are the laws about a contamination of mold in woolen or linen clothing, in the warp or the woof, or on any leather article, in order to determine whether it is clean or unclean.

  1. Leviticus 13:47 Or mildew. This is the same word translated leprosy or skin disease when it applies to the body.
  2. Leviticus 13:48 Warp and woof are the two directions of the threads in cloth. It is, however, not clear what the two Hebrew terms mean.
  3. Leviticus 13:49 People do not usually speak of things having an infection or a sickness, so here the translation uses contamination.
  4. Leviticus 13:51 Or malignant

Regulations About Contaminated Fabrics

47 “And when the garment has[a] an infectious skin disease[b] on it, on a wool garment[c] or on a linen garment,[d] 48 or on woven material or on a linen fabric, or[e] on wool or on leather or on any work of leather, 49 and if the infection is yellowish green or reddish on the garment or on the leather or on the woven material or on the fabric or on any leather object,[f] it is an infectious skin disease[g] and it shall be shown to the priest. 50 And the priest shall examine the infection, and he shall confine the infected article for seven days. 51 And he shall examine the infection on the seventh day; if the infection has spread on the garment or on the woven material or on the fabric or on the leather, for any work for which the leather is used, the infection is a destructive skin disease[h]—it is unclean. 52 And he shall burn the garment or the woven material or the fabric, whether wool or linen,[i] or any leather object that has[j] the infection, because it is an infectious skin disease,[k] which is destructive—it must be burned in the fire.

53 “But[l] if the priest examines it[m] and if[n] the infection has not spread on the garment or on the woven material or on the fabric or on any leather object, 54 then[o] the priest shall command, and someone[p] shall wash that on which the infection is, and he shall confine it a second time for seven days. 55 And the priest shall examine it[q] after the infection has been washed off, and if[r] the infection has not changed its outward appearance and the infection has not spread, it is unclean; he must burn it in the fire; it is a fungus on its back or on its front. 56 But[s] if the priest examines it[t] and if[u] the infection is faded after it has been washed off, then[v] he shall tear it from the garment or from the leather or from the woven material or from the fabric. 57 And if it appears again on the garment or on the woven material or on the fabric or on any leather object, it is spreading; you[w] must burn in the fire that which has the infection in it. 58 And the garment or the woven material or the fabric or any leather object that he might wash and the infection is removed from them then[x] shall be washed a second time, and it shall be clean.”

59 This is the regulation of the infectious skin disease[y] in[z] the wool garment or the linen or the woven material or the fabric or any leather object to declare it clean or to declare it unclean.
