¹⁰ You are to distinguish between the holy and the common and between the unclean and the clean,^(A)

¹² Moreover, I gave them my Sabbaths, as a sign between me and them, so that they might know that I the Lord sanctify them.^(A)

¹³ But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness; they did not observe my statutes but rejected my ordinances, by whose observance everyone shall live, and my Sabbaths they greatly profaned.

Then I thought I would pour out my wrath upon them in the wilderness, to make an end of them.^(A)

²⁰ But when they came to the nations, wherever they came, they profaned my holy name, in that it was said of them, “These are the people of the Lord, yet they had to go out of his land.”^(A)

²³ They shall teach my people the difference between the holy and the common and show them how to distinguish between the unclean and the clean.^(A)

¹¹ “Thus says the Lord of hosts: Ask the priests for a ruling:^{(A) 12} If one carries consecrated meat in the fold of one’s garment and with the fold touches bread, or stew, or wine, or oil, or any kind of food, does it become holy?” The priests answered, “No.”^{(B) 13} Then Haggai said, “If one who is unclean by contact with a dead body touches any of these, does it become unclean?” The priests answered, “Yes, it becomes unclean.”^{(C) 14} Haggai then said, “So is it with this people and with this nation before me, says the Lord, and so with every work of their hands; what they offer there is unclean.^(D)

⁸ But you have turned aside from the way; you have caused many to stumble by your instruction; you have corrupted the covenant of Levi, says the Lord of hosts,^(A)
