²"Geef de Israëlieten de volgende regels over de brand-offers.

Als iemand Mij een brand-offer wil brengen, dan moet hij een dier van zijn vee geven: een rund, een schaap of een geit.

³Als hij een rund wil offeren, moet hij een gezonde jonge stier uitzoeken. Hij moet hem bij de ingang van de tent van ontmoeting offeren. Hij moet het dier vrijwillig en van harte offeren. ⁴Hij moet zijn hand op de kop van het dier leggen.^[a] Zo zal Ik de man vergeving kunnen geven voor wat hij verkeerd gedaan heeft.

Leviticus 1:4 Zo legde de man als het ware zijn eigen schuld op het dier. Het dier ging de straf dragen voor de schuld van de man.

²Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man of you bring an offering unto the Lord, ye shall bring your offering of the cattle, even of the herd, and of the flock.

³If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the Lord.

⁴And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him.
