Support for the Priests and Levites

Then the Lord spoke to Aaron, “Look, I have put you in charge of the contributions(A) brought to me. As for all the holy offerings(B) of the Israelites, I have given them to you and your sons as a portion and a permanent statute.(C) A portion of the holiest offerings kept from the fire will be yours; every one of their offerings that they give me, whether the grain offering, sin offering, or guilt offering will be most holy for you and your sons. 10 You are to eat it as a most holy offering.[a] Every male may eat it; it is to be holy to you.

11 “The contribution of their gifts also belongs to you. I have given all the Israelites’ presentation offerings(D) to you and to your sons and daughters as a permanent statute.(E) Every ceremonially clean person in your house may eat it. 12 I am giving you all the best of the fresh oil, new wine, and grain,(F) which the Israelites give to the Lord as their firstfruits.(G) 13 The firstfruits of all that is in their land, which they bring to the Lord, belong to you. Every clean person in your house may eat them.

14 “Everything in Israel that is permanently dedicated to the Lord(H) belongs to you. 15 The firstborn of every living thing, human or animal, presented to the Lord belongs to you. But you must certainly redeem a human firstborn,(I) and redeem the firstborn of an unclean animal. 16 You will pay the redemption price for a month-old male according to your assessment: five shekels[b] of silver by the standard sanctuary shekel, which is twenty gerahs.(J)

17 “However, you must not redeem the firstborn of an ox, a sheep, or a goat; they are holy. You are to splatter their blood on the altar and burn their fat as a food offering for a pleasing aroma to the Lord. 18 But their meat belongs to you. It belongs to you like the breast of the presentation offering and the right thigh.

19 “I give to you and to your sons and daughters all the holy contributions that the Israelites present to the Lord as a permanent statute. It is a permanent covenant of salt(K) before the Lord for you as well as your offspring.”

20 The Lord told Aaron, “You will not have an inheritance in their land; there will be no portion among them for you. I am your portion and your inheritance among the Israelites.(L)

21 “Look, I have given the Levites every tenth(M) in Israel as an inheritance in return for the work they do, the work of the tent of meeting. 22 The Israelites must never again come near the tent of meeting, or they will incur guilt and die. 23 The Levites will do the work of the tent of meeting, and they will bear the consequences of their iniquity. The Levites will not receive an inheritance among the Israelites;(N) this is a permanent statute throughout your generations. 24 For I have given them the tenth that the Israelites present to the Lord as a contribution for their inheritance. That is why I told them that they would not receive an inheritance among the Israelites.”

Offerings for Priests and Levites

Then the Lord said to Aaron, “I myself have put you in charge of the offerings presented to me; all the holy offerings the Israelites give me I give to you and your sons as your portion,(A) your perpetual share.(B) You are to have the part of the most holy offerings(C) that is kept from the fire. From all the gifts they bring me as most holy offerings, whether grain(D) or sin[a](E) or guilt offerings,(F) that part belongs to you and your sons. 10 Eat it as something most holy; every male shall eat it.(G) You must regard it as holy.(H)

11 “This also is yours: whatever is set aside from the gifts of all the wave offerings(I) of the Israelites. I give this to you and your sons and daughters as your perpetual share.(J) Everyone in your household who is ceremonially clean(K) may eat it.

12 “I give you all the finest olive oil and all the finest new wine and grain(L) they give the Lord(M) as the firstfruits of their harvest.(N) 13 All the land’s firstfruits that they bring to the Lord will be yours.(O) Everyone in your household who is ceremonially clean may eat it.(P)

14 “Everything in Israel that is devoted[b] to the Lord(Q) is yours. 15 The first offspring of every womb, both human and animal, that is offered to the Lord is yours.(R) But you must redeem(S) every firstborn(T) son and every firstborn male of unclean animals.(U) 16 When they are a month old,(V) you must redeem them at the redemption price set at five shekels[c](W) of silver, according to the sanctuary shekel,(X) which weighs twenty gerahs.(Y)

17 “But you must not redeem the firstborn of a cow, a sheep or a goat; they are holy.(Z) Splash their blood(AA) against the altar and burn their fat(AB) as a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.(AC) 18 Their meat is to be yours, just as the breast of the wave offering(AD) and the right thigh are yours.(AE) 19 Whatever is set aside from the holy(AF) offerings the Israelites present to the Lord I give to you and your sons and daughters as your perpetual share. It is an everlasting covenant of salt(AG) before the Lord for both you and your offspring.”

20 The Lord said to Aaron, “You will have no inheritance in their land, nor will you have any share among them;(AH) I am your share and your inheritance(AI) among the Israelites.

21 “I give to the Levites all the tithes(AJ) in Israel as their inheritance(AK) in return for the work they do while serving at the tent of meeting.(AL) 22 From now on the Israelites must not go near the tent of meeting, or they will bear the consequences of their sin and will die.(AM) 23 It is the Levites who are to do the work at the tent of meeting and bear the responsibility for any offenses they commit against it. This is a lasting ordinance(AN) for the generations to come.(AO) They will receive no inheritance(AP) among the Israelites.(AQ) 24 Instead, I give to the Levites as their inheritance the tithes that the Israelites present as an offering to the Lord.(AR) That is why I said concerning them: ‘They will have no inheritance among the Israelites.’”

Instead, turn to the place the Lord your God chooses(A) from all your tribes to put his name for his dwelling and go there. You are to bring there your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your tenths and personal contributions,[a] your vow offerings and freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks. You will eat there in the presence of the Lord your God and rejoice with your household in everything you do,[b] because the Lord your God has blessed you.

“You are not to do as we are doing here today; everyone is doing whatever seems right in his own sight.(B) Indeed, you have not yet come into the resting place(C) and the inheritance(D) the Lord your God is giving you. 10 When you cross the Jordan and live in the land the Lord your God is giving you to inherit,(E) and he gives you rest from all the enemies around you and you live in security, 11 then the Lord your God will choose the place to have his name dwell.(F) Bring there everything I command you: your burnt offerings, sacrifices, offerings of the tenth, personal contributions,[c] and all your choice offerings you vow to the Lord. 12 You will rejoice(G) before the Lord your God—you, your sons and daughters, your male and female slaves, and the Levite who is within your city gates, since he has no portion or inheritance among you.(H) 13 Be careful not to offer your burnt offerings in all the sacred places you see. 14 You must offer your burnt offerings only in the place the Lord chooses in one of your tribes, and there you must do everything I command you.

Slaughtering Animals to Eat

15 “But whenever you want, you may slaughter and eat meat within any of your city gates,(I) according to the blessing the Lord your God has given you. Those who are clean or unclean may eat it, as they would a gazelle or deer, 16 but you must not eat the blood; pour it on the ground like water.(J) 17 Within your city gates you may not eat the tenth of your grain, new wine, or fresh oil; the firstborn of your herd or flock; any of your vow offerings that you pledge; your freewill offerings; or your personal contributions.[d] 18 You are to eat them in the presence of the Lord your God at the place the Lord your God chooses—you, your son and daughter, your male and female slave, and the Levite who is within your city gates. But you are to seek the place the Lord your God will choose from among all your tribes to put his Name(A) there for his dwelling.(B) To that place you must go; there bring your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your tithes(C) and special gifts, what you have vowed(D) to give and your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks.(E) There, in the presence(F) of the Lord your God, you and your families shall eat and shall rejoice(G) in everything you have put your hand to, because the Lord your God has blessed you.

You are not to do as we do here today, everyone doing as they see fit,(H) since you have not yet reached the resting place(I) and the inheritance(J) the Lord your God is giving you. 10 But you will cross the Jordan and settle in the land the Lord your God is giving(K) you as an inheritance, and he will give you rest(L) from all your enemies around you so that you will live in safety. 11 Then to the place the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his Name(M)—there you are to bring everything I command you: your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your tithes and special gifts, and all the choice possessions you have vowed to the Lord.(N) 12 And there rejoice(O) before the Lord your God—you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites(P) from your towns who have no allotment or inheritance(Q) of their own. 13 Be careful not to sacrifice your burnt offerings anywhere you please.(R) 14 Offer them only at the place the Lord will choose(S) in one of your tribes, and there observe everything I command you.

15 Nevertheless, you may slaughter your animals in any of your towns and eat as much of the meat as you want, as if it were gazelle or deer,(T) according to the blessing the Lord your God gives you. Both the ceremonially unclean and the clean may eat it. 16 But you must not eat the blood;(U) pour(V) it out on the ground like water.(W) 17 You must not eat in your own towns the tithe(X) of your grain and new wine and olive oil,(Y) or the firstborn of your herds and flocks, or whatever you have vowed to give,(Z) or your freewill offerings or special gifts.(AA) 18 Instead, you are to eat(AB) them in the presence of the Lord your God at the place the Lord your God will choose(AC)—you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites from your towns—and you are to rejoice(AD) before the Lord your God in everything you put your hand to. 19 Be careful not to neglect the Levites(AE) as long as you live in your land.(AF)

A Tenth for the Lord

22 “Each year you are to set aside a tenth of all the produce grown in your fields. 23 You are to eat a tenth of your grain, new wine, and fresh oil, and the firstborn of your herd and flock, in the presence of the Lord your God at the place where he chooses to have his name dwell,(A) so that you will always learn to fear(B) the Lord your God. 24 But if the distance is too great for you to carry it, since the place where the Lord your God chooses to put his name is too far away from you and since the Lord your God has blessed you, 25 then exchange it for silver, take the silver in your hand, and go to the place the Lord your God chooses. 26 You may spend the silver on anything you want: cattle, sheep, goats, wine, beer, or anything you desire. You are to feast there in the presence of the Lord your God and rejoice with your family. 27 Do not neglect the Levite within your city gates, since he has no portion or inheritance among you.(C)

28 “At the end of every three years, bring a tenth of all your produce for that year and store it within your city gates. 29 Then the Levite, who has no portion or inheritance among you, the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow within your city gates may come, eat, and be satisfied.(D) And the Lord your God will bless you in all the work of your hands that you do.(E)

Tithes

22 Be sure to set aside a tenth(A) of all that your fields produce each year. 23 Eat(B) the tithe of your grain, new wine(C) and olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the Lord your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name,(D) so that you may learn(E) to revere(F) the Lord your God always. 24 But if that place is too distant and you have been blessed by the Lord your God and cannot carry your tithe (because the place where the Lord will choose to put his Name is so far away), 25 then exchange(G) your tithe for silver, and take the silver with you and go to the place the Lord your God will choose. 26 Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented drink,(H) or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the Lord your God and rejoice.(I) 27 And do not neglect the Levites(J) living in your towns, for they have no allotment or inheritance of their own.(K)

28 At the end of every three years, bring all the tithes(L) of that year’s produce and store it in your towns,(M) 29 so that the Levites (who have no allotment(N) or inheritance(O) of their own) and the foreigners,(P) the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied,(Q) and so that the Lord your God may bless(R) you in all the work of your hands.
