² “Tell Aaron and his sons to treat with respect the sacred offerings^(A) the Israelites consecrate to me, so they will not profane my holy name.^(B) I am the Lord.^(C)

¹⁹ You have profaned^(A) me among my people for a few handfuls of barley and scraps of bread.^(B) By lying to my people, who listen to lies, you have killed those who should not have died and have spared those who should not live.^(C)

²⁶ Her priests do violence to my law^(A) and profane my holy things; they do not distinguish between the holy and the common;^(B) they teach that there is no difference between the unclean and the clean;^(C) and they shut their eyes to the keeping of my Sabbaths, so that I am profaned^(D) among them.^(E)

²⁰ And wherever they went among the nations they profaned^(A) my holy name, for it was said of them, ‘These are the Lord’s people, and yet they had to leave his land.’^{(B) 21} I had concern for my holy name, which the people of Israel profaned among the nations where they had gone.^(C)

²² “Therefore say to the Israelites, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: It is not for your sake, people of Israel, that I am going to do these things, but for the sake of my holy name,^(D) which you have profaned^(E) among the nations where you have gone.^{(F) 23} I will show the holiness of my great name,^(G) which has been profaned^(H) among the nations, the name you have profaned among them. Then the nations will know that I am the Lord,^(I) declares the Sovereign Lord, when I am proved holy^(J) through you before their eyes.^(K)

Breaking Covenant Through Divorce

¹⁰ Do we not all have one Father^[a]?^(A) Did not one God create us?^(B) Why do we profane the covenant^(C) of our ancestors by being unfaithful^(D) to one another?

¹¹ Judah has been unfaithful. A detestable^(E) thing has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem: Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the Lord loves^(F) by marrying^(G) women who worship a foreign god.^(H)
